Hello! Namaste! Salam Alaikum! This is a thread to discuss the politics of India, including foreign affairs and crusades religious politics pertaining to India.

Currently, the ruling party is the Centre to Middle Right BJP, headed by PM Narendra Modi. The opposition is the Indian National Congress (INC), lead by Sonia Gandhi for now. In this year’s election, BJP gained many seats, but very recently, it lost its state majority in Haryana and barely kept it in Maharashtra. This is all happening whilst a massive economic miracle is taking place day by day, as new companies and investors flood into India, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

So, what do these setbacks mean for the BJP? Could they retain their majority in the next election? Who will succeed Modi and Sonia Gandhi?

I actually agree, a free and genuine referendum for Kashmir should be needed. Either way at least one country is going to get mad though

There have been plans to make Hindi the national language, but given the prevalence of English and the diversity of other languages, that won't happen.

English and Hindi are the two national languages, but making Hindi the sole national language is fine with most people except Tamil extremists, who are sizable enough for the government to stick with the bilingual national language structure. Causing civil unrest over national languages would be hilariously petty, even for Indian politicians

Uh...hold on! There are no national languages. Just 22 languages with equal official status.

And making Hindi the sole national language is fine only with people that speak Hindi either as a mother tongue or as second language.

Not remotely, but Modi's crackdown on religious and linguistic minorities, coupled with overwhelmingly and heavily nationalistic rhetoric is why he is a "quasi authoritarian bigot."

There are plenty of right wing leaders out there, who, while I dislike them, I wouldn't fathom calling extremists.

I can't imagine India ever truly going to just Hindi. With that many regional languages, you really ought to have two official ones to fall back on. It's one of the same reasons I think the United States should officially use English AND Spanish.

Any Indian sources, they get things far more accurate than Western ones. APB News is the most objective, I’d say. Times of India is basically “Modi sucks vote congress or else your a fascist racist cunt” 24/7, and Republic TV is nicknamed the BJP’s media division

From what I know, BJP is a catch-all party for everything right of center in India, much like the GOP in the US

That’s pretty accurate, Modi represents the mainstream right, while ministers like Amit Shah are pretty far right

I oppose making Hindi the sole national language, since it’ll undoubtedly cause mass unrest and threaten most languages (Marathi is my first language)
