SLATE [OOC | OPEN]

The continuing saga of the housemates from hell (some of them literally).
OOC THREAD ITERATION I

ICWORLD DATADRAMATIS PERSONÆSITREP

SLATE is a character-based, story-driven role play within in the PERSONIFICATION LIFE omniverse. New players do not need to be familiar with this omniverse to play in it.

Players are encouraged to improve their writing and character development skills, and to try their hands at GMing their own small adventures. Players of all skill levels are welcome here.

STORY PREMISE
Image
Sixty years have passed since mankind learned it wasn't alone in the universe. Heavy negotiating allowed Earth's denizens to take to the stars. It's by no means a sleek venture.

Although translight technology is out there, it's ungodly expensive. Most people book passage on commercially-owned ships to reach colonies and outer worlds.

Mankind relies on its colonies - space stations where one can refuel, agriculture centers on planets or moons that provide food and meat to the sector, industrial mining for precious metals and ores.

One of the newer colonies is a small, ringed world named Slate. It's inhospitable, the wildlife tends to be violent, and the views aren't worth a damn.

What Slate does have is water and deusmodium. This naturally occurring semi-metal results from the decay of uranium and thorium. Its high radioactivity requires special handling techniques and precautions. And, as it so happens, this delightful halogen comes in handy when used to power ships.
Mined as the complex ore deusmodium bogonium asspullide sulfate, deusmodium is primarily used for translight drives, due to the unusual relativistic quantum mechanical effects in its outer f-u orbitals...First commercially exploited by the Bradypus Mining Conglomerate, deusmodium is now mainly exploited by artisanal panning operations, usually by single desperate individuals - Dr. S. Loth

Slate thrives due to this mining as well the farms and ranches dotting its surface. In addition, its shipping port is a homey sort of town offering just about anything necessary to function as a colony, within reason. All of this is protected by domes to keep the good stuff in and the predators out.

The premise is simple: characters are part of the Agency (yes, that Agency minus any interference from gods) hired to protect the colony. This is not a chat location thread. Casual conversation between characters is fine, provided it leads to something productive to the story.

RULES & ETIQUETTE
Image
PG-13/Sex/Violence: Slate is not the place to act out your violent or sexual fantasies. We employ a "fade to black" rule rather than incur Mod wrath with graphic content or obscene material. Rape is taboo. NPCs are not there to be spindled, mutilated and torn apart unless, of course, it's combat.

Role Play Etiquette: Godmodding and metagaming are not allowed. No multi-colored or oddly formatted fonts for dialog. No asterisks to denote action. Don't be "that guy". Visit the One Stop Rules Shop if you aren't familiar with site rules. RP "rules" and etiquette for P2TM can be found here.
Non-Discrimination Statement and "Ban-able" Behavior
Slate, its players, and its staff do not nor will not discriminate against an individual based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity (including gender expression), sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income, political beliefs, or civil rights activity. That said, Slate's OOC threads and the Madhouse Server are not a platform for social activism or political rhetoric.

Poor sportsmanship and pot-stirring destroy games. If you have a problem with a player, try to hash it out behind the scenes. If you can't hash it out, as the OP for guidance. If you turn into a right shit, backstabbing people and attacking everyone while whining "unfair" when you were actually in the wrong... you'll be banned. Do not try to sneak back in with a puppet nation.

BANNED PLAYERS
As of 16 October 2018
    Urran
    Grand Britannia
    Germanic Templars
    Torsiedelle
Slate, a Personification Life (PL) franchise, and all its happy iterations, coding, apps, archive formats and fancy words may not be reproduced without the explicit written permission of the OP. Permission to retool and reboot this franchise was given by the last OP, Cerillium, here.

APPLICATION
Image
I allow people to run characters that appeal to them. However, as with most RP, the "cast" needs balancing.

If you have questions about character design, or would like assistance in making something that works in this setting, post here. Although we have a channel on the Madhouse server, games stay fresh when the OOC is utilized.
Ground rules for new players:
  • Slate isn't set in an anime universe. Your character pic can be in an anime style, but there aren't any mahou shoujo loaded with magical items or abilities, nor high powered mecha.
  • New players can not run a god, a demigod, or dragon. Been there, done that, it got old real quick.
  • You can run an anthro (or, within reason, an alien) but it's a predominantly human setting so that character might get odd looks or be mistrusted at first.
  • You can also run a mundane human.

Ground rules for existing PL franchise characters:
  • You can keep your character the same age or make them older - age preferences is yours.
  • Yes, you need to fill out the app.
  • The Agency is keeping a low profile. Don't go nuts with potent tech or magic. We're trying to tone things down just a wee bit, thanks.
  • Please don't run the same character simultaneously in other games.
  • You'll need to reapply using the new app.
    Looking for character background?: viewtopic.php?p=34774523#p34774523

To apply, copy code below. Please make sure you don't accidentally reformat it.
Do NOT add an image to this application. We'd had to deal with takedown notices in the past. Also, please feel free to browse other applications. Many players have adopted the "transcript" format for their character's bio.

A NOTE ON WHY AND HOW CHARACTERS ENTER THE GAME

Image
New Characters: You were given an opportunity to be more, to do more, to escape the burdens in life. Perhaps you were approached in a tea house? Maybe you had a knock on your front door? Whatever the cause, you don't remember exactly how it happened other then - to borrow from MiB - you came to your senses and found a card in your hand.

You turned up at the address on the card... (I don't know why. You figure out why. It's a chance to put talents to use, or an opportunity to travel into space, or the ability to wander around a new tech level, or the character is on a run from the law, or because telemarketers are forbidden to call during supper hours here)... were interviewed, and were welcomed on board. It's like galloping through a whirlwind! Or a tornado. Take your pick. They gave you a uniform, some gear for space stuff that only space stuff people would know how to put on properly, and a ticket for Slate. They promised you'd receive some new hire education once you arrived. Welcome to the Agency.

Characters from the previous PL iteration: They simply transferred. There was a lovely meeting held in the dining room with ample time to groan and several opportunities to shout at the Thade-sized shape rising up to block the dry PowerPoint presentation. They're given passage on a ship (portal is still being set up), and arrive at the dirtside space port. We'll pick up the game from there. And yes, keep groaning. You're still part of Gesellschaft, aka the Agency, a subsidiary of Göttergeschäft ("the gods' business" aka Geschäft). I combed every last thread. If I missed an iteration, Cer can go mope in the damn corner like the sleep-deprived honey badger he is.

Characters arriving after the IC launch: I'll work your character in to make it easier on players.

WORLD SETTING
Image
Slate? It's closer to Earth than it is the galaxy's asshole. It's taupe grey on top and uncanny cyan below, and everything between will eat you - mind the Crickets. Let's not forget the subterranean areas peg at a 10 on the Pucker Factor scale. But chin up, love. It's not so bad, right? The people are nice. The domes mostly work. Our quarters are comfy. And just wait until you see your paycheck - after taxes and lodging, of course. - Captain Minerva Blackwater

Image

Worldbuilding Information
Due to the variety of genre and species, medicine is all over the tech spectrum. At times, we scratch our heads over it. Would a medical doctor treat an anthro, or would a veterinarian if that anthro was more animal than human being?

The setting itself isn't too far into the future. On Earth and its colonies, it's 2079. There are available cures for some cancers, Laparoscopic surgery is more common than open. Nanites are used but are crude compared to the tech held by other species.

Genetic engineering is out there but tends be to closely guarded by the species that use it. H+ is similar. Mankind does have cyborgs now, similar to what you'd find in Cyberpunk. These are completely different than the tech priests from WH40k or other genre.

Think of it as a "wild west" setting. A city doctor and a country doctor would both be at home and welcomed by the Agency. We'll find ways to make it work in a way that lets you enjoy any particular genre or idea.

For those coming from old tech (1900s or older) and for those using FT, the issue is the same: getting the equipment the doctor is accustomed to using.

SITREP

Postby Swith Witherward » Thu Oct 24, 2019 4:26 pm

SITREP
The team have arrived at the dirtside spaceport on Slate. Most would probably be in their agency fatigues.

Please feel free to have your characters brood over memories, or give us some insight into them, before meeting up with Minerva and the Jackass the Director.

The trip likely lasted for days. The commercial spaceliner is large enough for wandering over decks, eating in the restaurants, etc. Think of it as a small ocean liner. The majority of passengers are townies returning from a vacation, or reassigned miners coming to work on Slate. It's likely that characters did not run into each other during the voyage though, if you want, you can work on a collab for your first post.

Magic is concealed even if the being looks magical.

Since I’m not too familiar with Personification Life, could you elaborate on what the Agency is, or represents?

No worries. Players don't have to know anything about PL in order to play. It's set in the same universe, but prior canon won't impact this iteration.

The Agency, for new players, is a quasi-mercenary organization. Think of a mashup of Men in Black, SPC, and a futuristic version of Millennium's End. Characters are part of a cell hired for a variety of jobs. In Slate, they protect the colony from... well, the antagonists will be introduced IC.

Little is known about the Agency, for good reason. Cells operate independent of each other, and only those at the top know who to report to. (This eliminates the whole canon-knowledge issue).

I'm very interested but also very busy right now. So, it might take some time for me to get an app up. Other than that, the RP looks great.

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Agymnum / Agy

CHARACTER NAME: Gordon Felton

CHARACTER SPECIES: Human - Sympathetic Metahuman

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: If there ever was a “generic bureaucrat” model, this is him. Tall and slightly-stooped, he wouldn’t stand out on a metro line, especially not in his gray suit uniform.

He wears his hair - thick and black, probably the only thing about him not worn down by time - parted to the left, as is acceptable corporate style. Gordon keeps himself clean-shaven, though on particularly-long weeks he is known to sport scruff. He is always spectacled, thin rims as opposed to a more fashionable style, and the faint hint of creases line his forehead. His face is similarly unworthy of note: a small, button nose, beady eyes softened with tired crow’s feet, and thin lips curled in a neutral, slight frown.

He sports a farmer’s tan from the few vacations he is afforded, but beneath his creased suits his skin is ashen grey. His body tends to the longer side, with lanky limbs accentuating a midsection indicating he’s spent a little too much time at his desk and not enough in the gym.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A pencil-pusher metahuman from an alt-verse Earth whose skill in management and bureaucratic nonsense is only matched by his refusal to be open about himself and his general mistrust of others.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
  • Perfect for Middle Management:
    • Loyal and professional without being craven or ambitious
    • Dutiful enough to complete his tasks without the bravado to get himself in trouble
    • Just inspiring enough to his subordinates without inspiring everyone else to choose him over his superiors
  • Detail-oriented, especially when it comes to people he may need to manipulate
  • Awkward but friendly in most professional/casual social interactions
  • Secretive, though he tends to meander and dance around questions rather than outright refusing to answer

CHARACTER GOALS:
  • Start over in Slate, hopefully keep himself alive with a powerful organization like the Agency sheltering him
  • Get to a comfortable Agency position and open a small cybercafe on Slate
  • Eventually wants to return to his alt-verse Earth and retire on Mars, the Reds being more friendly to metahumans than Terrans ever were
  • Oh, and finally have an uninterrupted dinner and catch up with her

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY:
  • Cowardice
Gordon at the end of the day is out for himself. If it so happens that saving his skin will result in a job well done, all the better. But… if he is asked to make sacrifices, to put his head on the chopping block for the greater good… Well, then he starts singing a different tune. He’s been very fortunate in that his role as peacemaker has generally kept him out of danger, but there’s no telling what he’ll do once he’s in it.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:
[RECORD OF GORDON FELTON'S APPLICATION TO THE AGENCY... TRANSCRIPT START]

[INAUDIBLE BACKGROUND CHATTER, TWO VOICES]

[REDACTED]: Well Gordon, you have your cigarettes and your whiskey, let's begin.

GF: Right, well... To be honest, I didn’t ask for any of my gifts, and as such I don’t regard them as gifts. Different dimension, you understand, powers aren't always a blessing everywhere.

[REDACTED]: Yes, yes, we've heard the story before. Go on.

[MULTIPLE VOICES]: [INAUDIBLE] -not bad actually, you'll have to tell me the brand later. [INAUDIBLE]

GF: Right... where was I? Well, I was born shortly after the Ascendancy in 2020, a freak who wasn’t aborted at the birthing table only because my powers were hidden from public view. I managed to skirt through public education without much fuss, probably because being able to manipulate the sensations of other people really can get you places if you know what you’re doing.

[REDACTED]: [INAUDIBLE]

GF: Well, think of it this way: the wafting scent of cookies like grandma used to make, or the warmth of the summer sun on that vacation you took in Greece last summer - these sensations can quickly turn outrage into mere annoyance, or melancholy into friendly nostalgia. You understand, right?

[REDACTED]: [INAUDIBLE, ON FURTHER ANALYSIS APPEARS APPREHENSIVE]

GF: No, it was only when I graduated and entered the workforce that my troubles really began. In 2040 - in my dimension - the presence of metahumans was finally legislated upon by the UN; it was only a matter of time, social media and the private market had already begun capitalizing on individuals with esoteric powers.

[REDACTED]: And how did that make you feel?

GF: Me, feel? Well, at the time I didn't feel much of anything. Maybe fear, before - we were seen as freaks, you know. But after the publishing of the Metahuman Rights and Powers Accords, we became yet another class of citizens in the bureaucratic morass.

[REDACTED]: You seem displeased with this.

GF: Well, you know how it is. When my ability to… influence others, as they put it, was discovered and documented, I was fast-tracked to a middle management role at a particularly-irritating corporate branch. No control over that, nor the minder the FBI assigned me, nor the directives I was forced to follow. I had to start training at a government facility near the border, all very hush-hush as you might imagine.

[REDACTED]: What corporate branch, can you be specific?

GF: Uh, specifically, the San Diego branch of Proctor-Nagel.

[REDACTED]: They exist in multiple dimensions, you'll need to specify which one.

GF: Uh, hm... Well when I joined they had just won a bid for sole legal access to Mars to begin supplying the MCG’s new mining settlements. They're a general goods supplier, not sure what you want to know.

[A PORTION OF THE CONVERSATION WAS REDACTED FOR BREVITY]

GF: Right, well, I'll have to have you and your wife over for dinner some time, she sounds lovely.

[REDACTED]: Ahem, we got a bit off-topic there for a second, do you mind? More whiskey?

GF: Ah, no, thank you. Right... where was I? I mean, least I can say is that I got classified as a symp; most of the mals ended up institutionalized or in camps, depending on the country. I heard some of them make a killing as assassins and bodyguards from time to time, but nobody can ever prove anything. Anyways, then the Red Uprising happened, and our Martian brothers and sisters decided they didn’t like taking orders from the blue marble.

[REDACTED]: Red Uprising? So you're not from Earth 23B.

GF: Excuse me?

[REDACTED]: Forget what I'm saying, go on.

GF: Right, well, as you might imagine, a decade of war followed. I spent most of it on Earth, ended up transferred to a military logistics warehouse. At the war's end I had the luck to be selected as one of fifty diplomats - a crack team sent to broker a deal with the new Free Martian State. Mineral rights, a hand in the new constitution, representatives on Mars - whatever the UN could get and, by extension, then broker off to its various constituent nation-states, it wanted me to squeeze - blood from the red stone, as it were.

[REDACTED]: You'll be happy to know the war doesn't happen in several dimensions.

GF: I couldn't give a shit about the war, I just wish I wasn't on that damn diplomatic trip.

[REDACTED]: So what happened?

GF: What happened was we realized way too late that the FMS was, in fact, not interested at all in official relations with any Earth governments. After all, why talk to the bullies when corporations and the small fish will be perfectly happy to feed you in exchange for a new market?

[REDACTED]: And... when did you realize that?

GF: [LAUGH] Right about when they tore through the Unity’s hull with a couple of old nukes, courtesy of a supplier out of the Russian Federation. And now I’m here.

[REDACTED]: I see. Thank you, Mr. Felton. You may return to your room, processing of your application will be expedited as we see fit. Please, don't hesitate to ask for anything else.

GF: You got any more of that whiskey? And vape juice, if you got it, I forgot how much I hate cigarettes.

[TRANSCRIPT END]

Image
ONE BEST SKILL:
  • Sensation Manipulation
Due to extensive training both government-mandated and personal, Gordon has honed his sensory manipulation abilities to a T. He's capable of altering sense of temperature, smell, balance, physical touch, and hearing to suit his purposes. This manipulation is limited - he's not going to cause severe auditory or visual hallucinations (even the most trivial visual manipulation has always eluded him, though he isn't sure why) - but it serves the primary function of manipulating others into the right state of mind: nostalgic smells to relax suspicion, body warmth to encourage specific type of dress, imbalance to induce motion sickness or cause accidents, etc.

This manipulation has limited range, and the more intense the manipulation the more localized the range and the more focus required to maintain the illusion. He generally can only focus on one target if he's going for a very specific illusion (ex. smell of mom's home-made apple pie) but more general illusions he can maintain for all targets in a confined space or small radius (ex. making a room feel warmer, or smell vaguely pleasant, or causing general imbalance and unease among a crowd).

TWO GOOD SKILLS:
  • Disappearing into the Crowd
As part of his government-mandated training, Gordon was taught to keep spare outfits on him at all times and how to quickly manipulate his appearance, mannerisms, posture, and behavior to blend into a crowd and lose a pursuer or avoid detection beforehand. This skill requires access to some clothing and/or basic equipment (ex. Makeup, false facial hair, shaver, etc) to swap into and use to alter his appearance, otherwise it drops to Fair.
  • Chairing/Mediating
Having chaired many a meeting among disgruntled employees and new hires, Gordon has a knack for implementing good process to move things along; he listens to people’s problems and is open to suggestions but never lets the group get too far away from their intended goal with the meeting. Have him at the helm of any meeting, and you're sure to have a productive one with everyone walking away feeling... if not happy, then at least satisfied. Or at the very least, if they're unhappy, they won't be holding any grudges against him.

THREE FAIR SKILLS:
  • Professional Writing
Gordon is experienced with writing communiques, memos, drafting both internal and external press releases and editing out aggressive or unsavory tone/content from articles. He's also published in a few notable journals on management back home, primarily research into good office workflow and incident/conflict resolution.
  • Coaching
As a process manager, Gordon has naturally developed sense for goal-setting and encouraging his subordinates to set both professional and personal development milestones to ensure continued usefulness. He's pretty decent at follow-up and encouragement, and nobody who's worked under him has had any complaints about whether he's helping them grow as professionals. Still, he isn't as hands-on as some others, and would like to develop his abilities as a leader more (mostly to keep himself out of trouble).
  • Cooking
You’d be surprised how far one can get with the ability to cook one’s own food… Gordon can manage whatever is reasonable for a well-paid home chef, namely he knows his way around meat and basic sauces. Don't expect him to win any awards against actual trained professionals, but if needed he can cater a meeting himself without expecting any complaints. He did win one award for best meat sauce at a home cookout, though narrowly (he has since learned to use a little vodka in both the sauce and on the judges, to improve flavor).

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:
  • Handguns
He’s proficient in stationary shooting form, accuracy (up to 25 feet), and maintenance of basic early-to-mid-21st-century Earth handguns. Partial to the Isosceles stance, he has little experience with shooting from cover or from a crouching or prone position. He’s got a particular affinity for CZ’s, but no complaints here if he gets a Glock or a 1911. Maybe stay away from the Yeet Cannon, though.
  • Driving
You'd think with him being a bureaucrat, he would've been driven around a bunch, but Gordon is more comfortable driving himself places (especially places he expects trouble) and it shows. He won't win any racing competitions and he's uncomfortable with a stick, but if there's any long-distance driving to be done and the road's a little bumpy or unsafe, he can probably get it done. No training in spacecraft or planes, though he's managed a large truck when he had to move a friend a few states over back on Earth.
  • Swimming
Gordon did a bunch of amateur swimming (never competition) in high school and college, and still does so for fun (at gyms, he hates the beach). His form is solid enough and he can handle light weights - don't expect him to reliably save drowning people, fishing out a backpack or trinket is more his speed. Prefers freestyle.
  • IT setup/maintenance
He dabbled in the various tech and gadget clubs at his college and still does so today. Can stand up a Tomcat server, do basic programming in Python and Javascript, and can troubleshoot website issues in a pinch. He's up-to-date on whatever is hot in early-to-mid-21st century tech, though expect him to be a fish out of water with some of the more advanced or experimental stuff on Slate.

MISC INFORMATION:
  • Partial to cats and dogs, prefers cats.
  • Has a creepy habit of intensely staring at others when they are talking. He doesn't mean anything by it, but people have commented that it unsettles them, nevertheless.

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
  • CZ-75B handgun, factory spec
  • Mod vaporizer - his preferred liquid is pineapple menthol
  • A closet's worth of grey suits, all identical with blue or red ties, white collared long-sleeve shirts, grey socks, and two pairs of dress shoes (one black, one brown)
  • A variety of clothes he doesn't wear every day, mainly for disguises (Hawaiian shirts, swimming shorts, graphic tees, jackets of various styles, gloves, sunglasses, etc.)
  • Disguise kit: makeup, fake beards/mustaches, latex/rubber attachments matching his skin tone in various shapes (to alter facial profile, lips, wrists, etc)
  • Cooking utensils - one nonstick pan, one stainless steel pan, large soup/stock pot, small immersion circulator, immersion blender, miscellaneous cutlery, etc. (what you'd expect from a home cook)
  • Filing cabinet full of old memories and important documents, with accompanying paper shredder
  • Mid-spec 21st century desktop computer with accessories (mouse, keyboard, monitor, headset, microphone), doubles as a server computer for anything he deems important

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Lykos, Aksarben, NA, Squirrel, it all works!

CHARACTER NAME: PRO-NS-34 “Jormungand”

CHARACTER SPECIES: Uplifted Night Stalker

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Jormungand in his preferred outfit
Anthropomorphic night stalker, rattlesnake-coyote hybrid. Jormungand is 6'10 and surprisingly stocky, despite the lithe way he moves. His diet's given him a bit of a belly, but he's not out of shape.

The scales and rattlesnake-like parts primarily are along their tail, head and neck, and up their spine, Their limbs and body is more like a coyotes, along with a pair of coyote ears and scruffy fur along their neck, chin, and spine. The tongue is largely snakelike, but wider. Mouth has coyote-like teeth, but large retractable venomous fangs for the top teeth, and the ability to unhinge the jaw. Hands have claws rather than nails, and digitigrade legs lead to canine paws.

Their coloration is almost monochrome, in blacks, greys, and blues for both fur and scales. Their eyes have slit pupils like snakes, with the iris being blue-green.

Their clothing style can be summarized as "Cowboy greaser". They wear a brown cowboy hat and vest often, along with jean or sturdy shorts. They also are often wearing fingerless gloves and prefer looser clothing if possible to not get in the way of their limberness.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A mutant humanoid from a version of the fallout universe who can best be described as a doofy cowboy greaser, expert mechanic, and all around nice guy.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
  • Sweet and kind to a fault
  • A bit of a drinker and drug user, rarely to excess
  • Gregarious, casual
  • Helpful
  • Curious
  • Observant but doofy
  • Loves to explore
  • Good natured
  • Often naturally tunes out other things when fully invested in one task
  • A rather lonely person, beyond the exuberant surface.

CHARACTER GOALS:
  • Help Slate expand and grow, its his new home after all.
  • Explore the multiverse, there's just too much out there to NOT see some of it!
  • Build a fast-as-hell and durable car from scratch. Just something he's always wanted to do!
  • Find a new family. He's part coyote, its in his blood to desire family.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY:
    Loneliness and Inadequacy
Jormungand has, ever since he left the Big MT, been lonely. He left his family and pack behind and has yet to really settle anywhere. While he's exuberant and friendly in the day to day, he feels his nature as a created hybrid and uplifted animal will forever separate him from truly connecting with humans and other. While the time he spent among the plains tribe was the closest he ever felt and least he'd ever been judged back home, he still felt like an outsider.

On top of this, Jor has a desire to be useful and helpful practically built into his cognition. A lifetime of feeling inadequate and like he was born a failure has made him more than a little self-destructive and denigrating. He'll constantly put himself in danger or take on extra work to show his utility to whatever group he's currently linked up with. He wants to pull his weight, basically, and feels people won't accept him truly if he's not pouring his everything into every single thing he does. This has lead to more than a few injuries.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:
[APPLICANT INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT]

Jormungand: Okay, so, y'all want me to talk about my life and how I ended up here? I'm surprised y'all don't already know this stuff.

[REDACTED]: We've always found it useful to get an individuals own take on their life.

J: And since I only just woke up...?

[REDACTED]: It's our first chance to discuss this with you, yes. We weren't expecting you to arrive already injured.

J: I'd been in bad straights since a run in with some scouts a few days before, who didn't take too kindly to my lil ol' mutant self.

[REDACTED]: Indeed. Begin when you're ready.

J: So, guessin' I should start with my birth, or should it be later? I never know when tellin' these sortsa tales. Birth's good, yeah.

[BACKGROUND CHATTER, APPLICANT CLEARING THROAT.

J: I was less born, more made, but the principle's the same. I was created to be an experiment, and almost from birth I was deemed a failure. I won't get into why, but suffice to say, I can't exactly continue my bloodline which was failure enough in creating a life-form.

[REDACTED]: [Unintelligible]

J: Oh, I wasn't terminated because they figured it'd still be useful in the experiment. Didn't want to explain the serial number gap to my siblings, I suppose. We were created to help serve as companions for humanity's struggle through survival and prospering in the wasteland. To be better adapted than our human cousins, but not meant to replace them. 'Least that's what the Doctors said. Someone they knew long before my life convinced them humanity needed help, I guess.

[REDACTED]: Where was this?

J: A base called the Big Empty, how I remember it called. Full of disembodied brains, experimental life, arcing electricity, and constantly breakin' machines. I ended up being trained to help with the last. Never had the head for science, but machines just clicked with me. Well, that and exploring all the odd things that the Doctors kept forgetting about.

[REMOVED FOR BREVITY. SUMMARY: A DISCUSSION OF YOUTH IN SAID BIG EMPTY]

J: I'd rather not talk about him anymore, sorry. Sensitive subject. Anyway, I got stir crazy at the Big Empty. I heard how previous experiments had escaped before, and I snuck out. Turns out being what I am, I'm naturally good at hidin'. I wandered through the mountains, and ended up in a desert. While some of the hallucinations from dehydration and starvation were fun, I think I'll skip forward.

[REDACTED]: Very well. What was next?

J: Well, I met the Nightstalkers.

[REDACTED]: ...You're a night stalker, you met one of your own kind outside?

J: No, no, no. My fault, I was too unclear! I met the Nightstalker tribe. In the wake of this group called the Legion falling apart, apparently one splinter in the plainslands had gone back to their old ways of living and renamed themselves off a new critter in their lands: the night stalker.

[REDACTED]: . . . Okay, so you're going to have to explain that again.

J: Oh, I didn't mention that my siblings weren't the first night stalkers? I usually lead with that. The first ones were animals, plain and simple. Same idea, hybridized coyotes and rattlesnakes. Eventually, one of the Doctors wondered if they could give intelligence the same way they built the critters.

[REDACTED]: Remind me to never visit them, they sound unhinged from what you've said.

J: There is a reason I have never looked back, even if I miss my siblings.

[UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE, OTHER THAN THE SOUNDS OF THE OFFICE BEYOND]

J: Anywayyy. The Nightstalkers. They showed me this whole look I currently wear, and I just loved it. They, surprisingly, thought nothin' of my being a mutant. In fact, they almost tried to start a cult around me at first!

[REDACTED]: How flattering.

J: Yeah, a bit, but it made me uncomfortable too. I made sure that never happened. I ain't anything but me, and that's a genetic anomaly of an experiment who happens to be competent with a wrench. I was about fifteen when I got there. I only left last year. They made me who I am, became a second family.

[REDACTED]: And why'd you leave?

J: I got stir crazy again. I wanted to see more of the wastes. Keep goin' east, see what was out there to find.

[REDACTED]: Your face and rattle tells me that isn't everything.

J: I don' like to talk about it, but I can't go back anymore. There ain't anything left for me there. That's it.

[REDACTED]: I see. We'll drop it. What about the year before we picked you up?

J: The next year's a lot of exploration, surviving in the rough, an' fighting. I got into a big scrape, caught in a tribal war of some kind, and a few days later I find myself here. Don' remember much else. That's basically it. Can I go get somethin' to eat now, and get out of this bed?

ONE BEST SKILL:
  • Expert Mechanic
Myriad experience in the wastes of his home has taught Jor the mechanical workings of a lot of different types of technology, and how to pull things apart. This means he's useful being put onto most work involving machines, mechanical parts, engines, or similar. The only thing he's never really gotten the hang of back home was robotics. The numbers just make his head spin when he tries to program behavior!

Related, he's experienced with most kinds of tools used for the construction, repair, and deconstruction of metal creations and machines. He's specialized in repair, rather than constructing new pieces from spare parts.

TWO GOOD SKILLS:
  • Nightstalker Biology
Jormungand was created with the natural reflexes and senses of the animals they were made from. However, none of these talents are supernatural or preternatural, and limited by his biology. For instance, Jormungand is protanopic colorblind, though this was not intentional on the part of his creators, but a defect.

Jormungand has a sharp nose able to tell distinct scents easily(A trait shared by both coyotes and rattlesnakes) and has very good vision. He also possesses the heat pits of some snake species, allowing him to see body heat and thermal sources out to about 50 feet. Using his tongue, he can smell like a snake as well. He hears like a human or coyote, with exterior ears. He also has good night vision, but his eyes are better adapted for day or twilight.

His bite is poisonous, bearing similarities to a Movajve rattlesnake's venom. This venom is an anti-coagulant and paralytic through disrupting the nervous system, potentially leading to organ failure through this same disruption. His bite also very damaging, given his mouth has the most dangerous traits of both coyotes and rattlesnakes. The poisonous fangs are retractable. Similarly, his nails are like animal claws rather than human fingernails. He also retained the ability to unhinge His jaw and swallow things much larger than other bipeds could, though prefer to eat more like a human or coyote. He also has a rattle on his tail, which helps show his mood.

He also shares and has trained his natural limberness and reflexes of a snake. His reactions can be split-second, and this makes him a damn good snap-shot with guns and quick to draw weapons. He's naturally adept at lunging bites. He can bend like a contortionist and safely ingest things much larger than other creatures his size, though it may cause indigestion and discomfort.
  • Mechanic: Automobile and Engine specialty
Jormungand loves automobiles and working on them. While he's often not familiar with the exact name of a part, his skill at repairing and even constructing them is excellent. One of his dreams is building a vehicle of his own from scratch. He's especially good at diagnosing issues with engines and fixing them. He's got pride in his skill in this area.

However, the ones he knows best are the eclectic types from his homeworld, which used fusion as the power source, which means he can get confused with other kinds of engines.
THREE FAIR SKILLS:
  • Handguns, Revolvers
Paired with his reflexes, Jormungand's had plenty of hands-on experience defending himself using revolvers and pistols, his weapons of choice beyond wrenches and bats. He has little issue with the reload motions, being highly practiced and naturally fast. However, being who he is, he'll always be the last to pull a weapon on someone. He has little form for his gunmanship, given he learned through using and in an environment that prioritized survival over fancy gun-work.
  • Cars: Driving
Simply put: Jormungand knows how to drive automobiles. A surprisingly rare skill in some areas, but one that can translate between different kinds of vehicles if they're similar enough in design.
  • Ropes, knotwork
His history living with tribals and surviving on his own means he's learned quite a few skills with ropes and knots. Things like lassos and hogtying aren't out of his purview, and you never know when rope will be useful.
FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:
  • Scavenging
Years of wandering and picking through ruins has lead him to develop a sense of what may or may not be valuable, and the know-how of how to safely scavenge or where to look for certain types of things. Such as a junkyard for plastics or metals or a town for medicine and food.
  • Survivalist Cooking
His cooking would never hack it in a proper restaurant, but Jormungand knows how to fry eggs, cook stews, and what generally is safe to eat out when you're roughing it. He's most familiar with things from his wasteland home, however, which can lead to some interesting ideas of what's safe to eat. Regardless he knows how to cook.
  • Hand-to-hand fighting
Much like his gunmanship, his fighting is scrappy, reliant on natural talents, and rough around the edges. He often uses a heavy, blunt weapon such as his wrench, but just as often uses his teeth, fangs, and claws. His fighting style is more reliant on quickness than strength, as well.
  • Quick Learner
Jormungand is quite simply someone eager to learn and with a natural knack towards heuristics. He can pick up skills, information, and technique quickly and with minimal instruction. This is just a natural proclivity to picking up new information quickly.

MISC INFORMATION:
  • He has an odd propensity for getting into weird situations without even trying to.
  • Jormungand is literate, and surprisingly well read, even if not appearing so.
  • Jormungand prefers meats to veggies, but loves sweet things like fruit.

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
  • His personal, well-used toolset held in a portable toolbox
  • Toolbelt with added holster
  • A few sets and permutations of his favorite outfit, which is best described as greaser meets cowboy.
  • An extra-large wrench, for extra-large problems, always on his belt.
  • Worn, but well-maintained revolver.
  • Pictures of both his old homes, held in a photo wallet
  • Well-worn and slightly burned cast-iron frying pan and pot, wooden spatula, wooden spoon and see-through lid.
  • Tinderbox
  • Survivalist knife
  • A coil of rope

That might be fun, yes! Tell me if it needs any refining, its just what I've whipped up over the last day, from the existing character profile I'd written.

Also, will have art for them soon enough, lol.

The app works for me, NA.

I'll try to hop onto discord in a little while...but I've got last minute stuff to do in the real world before bed, so I might not stay on long.

I am totally stealing Ayg's "transcript" approach. It looks good in both apps, and is a much nicer read.

Looks interesting :) Out of curiosity, what is medicine like at the time in the RP (like Firefly-esque similar to current medicine, or markedly more advanced/ largely automated)? Was considering a Physician character if that'd work with the setting

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Swith

CHARACTER NAME: Minerva Blackwater, MAJ (RET) (Frequently referred to as "Captain" due to her ownership of a ship.)

CHARACTER SPECIES: Cursed Immortal; host to Keeper of Secrets. (Former human)

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Minerva in battle dress
Minerva stands at 6'. Properly curved without being excessive, she is physically fit (think of a runner rather than a weightlifter). She loosely piles her long, red hair atop her head "when working". Loose strands littering her face or shoulders betray the urgency of a situation.

It is customary for her to wear neck-to toes leather outfits; the flesh underneath is tattooed and branded with sigils that bind her inner-daemon in place. These scars disturbingly flare when it uses its power, though they go unseen due to the properties of the black leather. She layers this with armor and cloak when the situation demands it.

Minerva's bearing projects authority and stoicism regardless of how shattered she feels at any given moment. Her bearing sometimes makes her seem aloof and, unwittingly, might cause with low self-esteem to cringe at first meeting. However, for all her nonsense, her warm voice that reassures or comforts.

She habitually speaks with impeccably clipped Received Pronunciation, but she'll soften and slow it when reassuring or comforting others.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: Black Ops with some tasty logistics on the side.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
  • No-Nonsense
Minerva prefers things to be short and to the point when in a work environment. It wasn't easy juggling everything happening at the Apartment, and very few realized how much was on her plate. She has to stop and remind herself that not everyone can function the same way, and that some people need to unburden via long-winded explanation.
  • Patience to a point
Minerva has learned to tolerate a lot of crap from people. However, hen she's pushed beyond her own tolerance for shit, the London etiquette flies right out the window. Minerva frosts balls with her witheringglare, and reverts to the Anglo-Indian dialect bestowed upon her during her childhood in India; this cobbled Hindi and English tongue-lashing only comes to an end with the pronouncement that someone or something is a "fucking chode" or "ragged cunt".
  • Somewhat Motherly
At least towards her Lads and people she's known quite a while.
  • Fatigued
The decades have been rough on her, and that burden occasionally shows through the cracks in her veneer, especially when nobody is looking. It's a lingering depression that seems to increase each decade.

CHARACTER GOALS:
  • Minerva yearns to part ways with 40K Chaos bullshit in order to be freed from the obligations thrust upon her. She, and others like her, found that freedom through Charumati and, ultimately, Demens.

  • She also yearns to thrive, to enjoy life as it is without having to fret over magic, and idiots in mecha, or rabid nutjobs out to kill Ponies. Riches are nothing if you forget to sniff the flowers or dance in the rain. Power is pointless if it robs you from being able to spend an afternoon sipping coffee at a French cafe, or having a spot of tea on the front porch.

It's because of these little pleasures that Minerva can appreciate as well as cherish the world she lives in. A sense of fierce protectiveness arises from that love, just as it did when she was a young woman dedicated to helping her fellow Jews escape Germany. She'll bring that same dedication to Slate, to the farmers and miners, and to their families.

  • She desires to pass on her knowledge. She's more than willing to help other "Residents" improve their existing skills or learn new ones. She's a bit like a hen in that regard. Show them, teach them, cluck happily as they leave the nest.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY:
  • Loneliness. Minerva is never alone, thanks to Purna, yet she feels a profound sense of isolation when apart from her Lads or other defectors from her old groups. That said - a tip for the psionics in the group: Purna never slumbers.

  • Forced immortality comes at a steep price. Minerva dies every twelve hours that she remains in Time. This is a total, meaning that she will frequently step out of Time for an hour or three if her presence is needed later in the day. The death is agonizing; she remains conscious as her body withers and rots in the physical world. Her soul was lost years ago. Rumor has it that it's kept in a pickle jar in Purna's belly.

"Blame Klaus," Minerva pounded her cigarette's cherry into the table's weathered surface. "Klaus is an asshole. A big, fucking chode that-"

She would have said more if she hadn't crumpled to the floor at that precise moment.

Neste had always assumed Minerva's death was, well, total. Yet, as she watched the Cultist Leader's flesh bubble and fester, she could hear the silent screams from Minerva's mind. Eyes widened as she peered into Minerva's own shriveling orbs.

"Nasty business, that," said the Construct.

It was a this precise moment that Purna, freed from her host, rose up from the putrid remains to hiss at the lizard.

"Nope," Neste tore off her own tail. "Not going to happen."

And thus Purna learned that Constucts are immune to magic, and that their tails doubled as a brutally nullifying implement of daemon torture.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:
[OPERATIVE INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT LOG 059.2 RECORD FOR AGENT MINERVA EDITH BLACKWATER]
[TRANSCRIPT START]

[INAUDIBLE BACKGROUND CHATTER, MULTIPLE VOICES]

[MEB:] Alright. But surely you know my history already?

[REDACTED1:] We keep things tidy, Major Blackwater. Let's review-

[MEB:] Minerva, or Captian Blackwater, if you please.

[REDACTED1:] Let's review, Major. You were born in India in 1918, the year the Flu Pandemic began its spread. Your father, Basil Blackwater, served in the British Navy. He died in the line of service before your birth. Your mother succumbed to the flu shortly after, correct?

[MEB:] Yes, but I really don't see the need to review this. It hasn't any bearing for this or any assignment

[REDACTED1:] According to hospital records, you were placed atop you dead mother? They expected you to die, yes?

[MEB:] I'm impressed by your thoroughness. I obviously did not perish. I remained in a Catholic orphanage until my family in London could be tracked down. I was twelve when I made the voyage.

[REDACTED2:] Are you aware of OPERATION: [REDACTED] ?

[MEB:]: No. Respectfully, sir, I've lived a very long time. We'll be here forever if you plan to question every last detail about my life.

[MULTIPLE VOICES:] [BACKGROUND DISCUSSIONS]

[REDACTED1:] Very well, Major. Let's wrap up the minor details before you came into [REDACTED] service. You were assigned as a Special Operations Executive in 1939. Specifically, espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in occupied Europe against the Axis powers.

[REDACTED2:] You may nod your head to keep this succinct.

[REDACTED1:] You specialized in underground railroads to move supplies and fleeing Jews in Nazi-occupied territories. This operation brought you to the attention of the notorious Einsatzgruppe officer, Maximilian Klaus.

[MEB:] His notoriety was earned during his time as Schutzstaffel. I have more than clarified-

[REDACTED1:] He referred to you as Unsterblich Miststück due to your efforts to hinder the Nazis, correct? This was before you came into [REDACTED] service. I can show you his own deposition, if you wish.

[MEB:] I'm familiar with the history. Yes, my Lads and I played our part to motivate him to squander resources on us. I don't see why any of this is necessary.

[REDACTED1:] Herr Klaus secretly admired your tenacity and drive. He was alerted when you were captured. A botched rail car sabotage, correct. Again, Major, you may nod or shake your head to confirm. Herr Klaus stated that he "immediately boarded a train to personally put a bullet through your head." He did not arrive in time. Records show that you fought-

[MEB:] I'm getting right ticked with where you are going with this.

[REDACTED1:] You fought your captors to protect an elderly Jewish woman. This resulted in the rape and sodomy of both you and the woman. They left you for dead in that stall. You failed to save her but-

[MEB:] I'd take it very kindly if you'd all bugger off.

[REDACTED2:] Please sit down, Minerva. I can see that you're agitated.

[MEB:] Agitated? Agitated? My record was to be concealed. That part was sealed. Who gave you authority? Did you ask [REDACTED] ?

[REDACTED1:] Nothing is sealed within the Agency, Major. Do you honestly think you can remain so secretive. To know you is to know what makes you tick. Everyone has their collar, Major.

[MEB:] No. Fuck off with that. Fuck [REDACTED][. Fuck that ragged cunt [REDACTED] . And fuck [REDACTED] and the [REDACTED] for his [REDACTED] [REDACTED] .

[MULTIPLE VOICES:] [SCREAMS]

[REDACTED2:] Put that chair down! That's an order!

[MULTIPLE VOICES:] [SCREAMS]

[REDACTED2:] Put [REDACTED1] down! Minerva, be sensible!

[MEB:] You want to know what happened to her next? [GROWLING] For her to tell you what you already know? You fucking- [UNINTELLIGIBLE]

[MULTIPLE VOICES:] [SCREAMS] [UNINTELLIGIBLE]- Someone grab a medic!

[MULTIPLE VOICES:] [SCREAMS] [UNINTELLIGIBLE]- The fuck [UNINTELLIGIBLE] so tall?

[REDACTED2:] Manifestation! Gods damn it! Get a Priest! Get a fucking Priest!

[OPERATIVE INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT LOG 059.4 RECORD FOR AGENT MINERVA EDITH BLACKWATER]
[TRANSCRIPT START]

[REDACTED2:] I would like to make this as stress free as possible, Minerva. Let's pick up after your death.

[MEB:] Please, thank you.

[REDACTED2:] To clarify some of Klaus' own disposition, the condition of his worst enemy caused Klaus to psychologically snap. He'd seen many horrors but nothing had left him prepared for what they'd done to you.

[MEB:] We avoid the topic in general.

[REDACTED2:] To this day, he has never told you how you came to be possessed by [REDACTED], or how life was restored to you. According to our records, and your own admission, you had become a "cursed thing now beholden to [REDACTED]".

[MEB:] That is correct.

[REDACTED2:] You also discovered that Klaus wasn't what people thought, and you joined him in secretly undermining Nazi Germany although you loathed him for what he was.

[MEB:] Correct.

[REDACTED2:] You worked you way up through [REDACTED] ranks until you were the leading cultist in charge of [REDACTED] forces at or near Tier Four. Your work has pulled you to walk in the distant past as well as the far future.

[MEB:] Tier Five. One level down. Four had it worse than we did, though.

[REDACTED2:] Ah, my mistake. Tier Five. Prior to your current assignment, you were [REDACTED]'s god killer?

[MEB:] That's. That's not entirely accurate. I was part of a joint-forces operation. Very large host. We lost many Men and Lads that day. So, yes, I've killed a god or two, but I can't march out there and kill one on my own.

[REDACTED2:] I will do us all a favor and not press you on "host".

[MEB:] Please don't. How is [REDACTED1] doing?

[REDACTED2:] He's retired with what remains of his limbs, but let's get back to the topic. You were instrumental in helping Klaus return to godhood? And now he is your lover?

[MEB:] That is correct.

[REDACTED2:] Time moved on. An avatar of your [REDACTED], [REDACTED], brought you to Bielefeld? Again, you may nod or shake your head. Very good. Your role was to infiltrate Bielefeld, ferreting out enemy movements and organizing [REDACTED] forces. And then, the Greater Being known as [REDACTED] bid you to join It in a war? Good. We won't mention it, here. Why are you now interested in moving on to a new assignment?

[MEB:] In truth, things have slowed on Galli. New reinforcements arrived, and were assigned to my former task. Since then, Klaus and I raised Sophie, his daughter. We also raised our adopted son, Nash. Both work for the Agency now. They've picked up where we left off. Were I still human, I would have retired long before now. Enjoy spending time with my grandchild. Move to somewhere with a warm clime and just wait to wrinkle up and die. As it is, I've retired from active duty. Consider me a reserve. Keep the Majority; I don't want it.

[REDACTED2:] I see. And what sort of role would you want to play in this mission?

[MEB:] Black Ops. And logistics.

[REDACTED2:] Pardon?

[MEB:] It's what I did before I died. It's what I did once [REDACTED] brought me to Bielefeld. The reason my Lads and I are effective against other pantheons is that we knew what to look for to mitigate risk for our side.

[REDACTED2:] And logistics?

[MEB:] It ties into my efforts, as much as it did in Bielefeld and Galli. My aim is to keep our people alive. To get them what they need. To snoop about while procuring those things. To get my finger on the pulse.

[REDACTED2:] You do realize that Headquarters and Command are remote? Your people will be briefed remotely for each mission, when not performing tasks locally. Why are you frowning?

[MEB:] The only "people" I have are my Lads. They take care of my ship. I'm bloody tired of herding cats, if you understand me. I think I can speak for almost the entirety of my pantheon's cultists when I say that we'd prefer to fade into the damn woodwork. If you want my opinion, get yourself some fresh meat. Bring along a few old hands.

[REDACTED2:] I'll see what I can do, Minerva. Thank you.

[END TRANSCRIPTION LOG 059.4]

ONE BEST SKILL:
  • Black Ops
The main difference between a black operation and one that is merely secret is that a black operation involves a significant degree of deception, to conceal who is behind it or to make it appear that some other entity is responsible ("false flag" operations).

In the prior game setting, much of what Minerva did fell into the "Black Ops" area. She's had much practice - Those operations meant keeping things unnoticed by other pantheons. In particular, she excels at espionage - intelligence gathering which includes information gathering from non-disclosed sources.

The catch to this her ability to set things up does not mean she can do every job. She's relies upon those with specific skillsets. When in the field herself, she falls back on her knowledge.
TWO GOOD SKILLS:
  • Combat Arms
Minerva is familiar with a variety of weapons, from semi-automatic pistols to shotguns to grenade launchers, though she prefers (and performs best with) "bolters", shotguns, and her Exitus Rifle
The Bolter is a mid-range anti-personnel weapon that lies between the lighter Bolt Pistol and the more effective Heavy Bolter, which fires .998 calibre bolt rounds. The standard pattern Bolter can easily be wielded by a Space Marine, but smaller pattern Bolters must be used by the Battle-Sisters of the Adepta Sororitas and other mortals.
The Exitus Rifle is an incredibly powerful sniper rifle, modified to fire special rounds designed specifically for the art of assassination from a distance. Minerva loans this weapon more than she uses it for missions.
The WH40K shotgun isn't much different than any other Combat shotgun. The principle is the same: basic ballistic weapons that have been in widespread use for millennia compared to the higher technology laser weapons. Their standard ammunition is scatter shot, which disperses during flight into a hail of fragments. The shotgun is a durable, simple and reliable weapon. And who doesn't love giving the enemy some lead poisoning?
  • Theology/Magic
Minerva is a non-magical being, excluding Purna's abilities. She has seen too much magic for her liking, and has cataloged much of it. It doesn't help her counter spells, nor can she cast any. It does allow her to comprehend the principles behind various genre. Her interest in various pantheons was an insatiable thirst at one time; she's gone out of her way to learn as much about them as possible. This was, in part, one of her roles in Bielefeld and Galli.
THREE FAIR SKILLS:
  • Polyglot
Self-explanatory. She picks up on languages quicker than most. She speaks both English and Hindi masterfully (considered native tongues). With the exception of Hindi, this ability does not pertain to writing systems that use ideographic scripts or undeciphered writing systems.

  • Piloting
Self-explanatory. She tends to shy away from things that aren't, in some way, a fixed wing. Her focus, for this game, is on cargo transport rather than small, single-engine craft. "Helicopters give me the cobblywobbles. Those should not be able to fly. I just... I can't get off of them fast enough. Hate flying them, hate riding in them."
  • Logistics (from a military aspect)

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS:
  • Driving
  • Data Entry
  • Research and Analysis
  • Domestics
This includes the basics: cooking, cleaning, mending, darning, knitting, washing, etc. She's rather proud of her ability to run a household. Sadly, her Susie Homemaker skills date back to the 1930s. She's stubborn and begrudgingly allowed Klaus to bring modern appliances into their apartment on Galli.

MISC INFORMATION:
  • Time Manipulation
This power won't be used for anything more that "stepping out of the shadows". The ability itself comes from Purna, and it's subject to the whim of the daemon. (A dice roll. Oops, missed that jump. Have fun falling to your death.) The ability is a curse and woven into the character's fabric. Minerva exists outside of time; every minute spent in the "real world" drains her. And, as she approaches her death, she typically speeds up the process by cramming as many drugs into her body as is possible.

That aside, if we have a noob that fucks up the game, Purna is an NPC and will be used to restore whatever mess they've made, if it's so cocked up that there's no way to repair damage via PC actions.

Image
IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC:
  • That vending machine. You know the one, right? That SCP thing from the dining room. It's coming to the new facility for all to enjoy.
  • Several datapads from her employer
  • The Wilting Succubus
  • That nullifying ugly stick used on Prim's characters - might as well keep comic relief
  • A bunch of useful stuff she's dragging over to Slate on her ship... some vehicles for people, food, drink, clothing for the environment, suits for going into the environment beyond the domes, etc. This list will expand as we're in need of standard items. The "logistics" role comes into play here.
  • Pilfered books from the Building's library. There's... going to be a lot of pilfered things by time we start up, I fear.
  • Drugs
  • Pots, pans, utensils, comfy furniture, clothing, tea and coffee, other misc household stuff for her own use
  • Firearms:
    • Bolter x 2
    • Exitus Rifle x 1
    • Shotgun x 2
    • An assortment of small caliber weapons to loan to other PCs if necessary
    • A non-working chainsword kept as a souvenir. It can go to someone playing a character strong enough to handle it and smart enough to fix it.

Brusia wrote:Looks interesting :) Out of curiosity, what is medicine like at the time in the RP (like Firefly-esque similar to current medicine, or markedly more advanced/ largely automated)? Was considering a Physician character if that'd work with the setting

We need a doctor.

Part of my decision was that fallout is westernish, and I read slate as somewhat firefly western ^^

It has that feel to it. I wouldn't say it's full-on cattle punk or space western. More like space opera, without the epic "big romance" BS that most people cheapen by sequestering their anime characters in apartments and cooing at each other.

To borrow from TV Tropes:

"Space Opera refers to works set in a spacefaring civilization, usually set in the far future or A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far Far Away.... Technology is ubiquitous and secondary to the story. Space opera has an epic character to it: the universe is big, there are usually many sprawling civilizations and empires, there are political conflicts and intrigue. The action will range part of a solar system, at least, and possibly a whole galaxy or more than one. It frequently takes place in a Standard Sci Fi Setting. It has a romantic element which distinguishes it from most Hard Science Fiction:
    • big love stories authentic romance that isn't forced or based on anime/manga high school antics
    • epic space battles
    • oversized heroes and villains [within reason]
    • awe-inspiring scenery [in the domes, in the underground, and off world]
    • insanely gorgeous men and women average folks that happen to be blessed with awesome skills and interesting backstories yet don't fall into the inane despair event horizon or any Mary Sue categories.

It's there. I'm still looking for her personal gear list. I have one for the Building, but much of that crap won't come over. Just the necessities needed to play the game.

PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME Sylvanstreak

CHARACTER NAME The Barber

CHARACTER SPECIES Cyberdyne Systems, Series 1027

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE In its default form, the Barber resembles a stocky, round faced Korean male, of late middle age, with close cropped hair and a salt and pepper goatee.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT An aide, colleague, cone of silence, and sidekick to Summerveil, a private detective.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY Given its partner's tendencies and proclivities, despite its nature by construction, it's oriented itself more toward being a turntable for Summerveil the (.)45 to play on. Not to say that she's a dilettante...more like an eccentric.

CHARACTER GOALS Render all assistance possible to the Agency, including finally opening that barbershop without prospective customers running away screaming and putting it at the Agency’s disposal as a discreet meeting point. In the meantime, discover the fate of its coworker and partner, Summerveil, in the two-being PI firm she runs. Find out how to create blended scents that won't drastically offend humanoid and other sapient olfactory sensibilities.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY Extreme vulnerability to very high or low temperatures, energy based weaponry, and explosives, as well as very high volume and/or velocity ballistic weaponry.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY
REDACTED. Tell me about yourself.

THE BARBER. I am a Cyberdyne Systems Series 1027 robotic entity.

REDACTED. What’re your origins? How did you come by the name The Barber?

THE BARBER. I was first activated on the 31st of August, 2036, and intended to be temporally displaced to the 31st of August, 1947. The temporal displacement equipment malfunctioned, resulting in an incomplete jump to an uncertain time and place. On arrival, I was deactivated and later reactivated by Summerveil. As I was later told, and in the same conversation she decided to call me a barber because she thought I needed one for this ugly goatee.

(CONVERSATION ABOUT SUMMERVEIL OMITTED.)

THE BARBER. Correct.

REDACTED. How did you come to partner with her? What other capabilities do you have?

THE BARBER. Due to the incomplete jump, my initial mission no longer applied as its objectives could not be accomplished. Summerveil reprogrammed me to assist in her work, acting as a semi-autonomous utility tool. And also a hairstylist.

THE BARBER’S ARMS MORPH AND EXTEND SOUNDLESSLY INTO POLISHED BLADES, ONE WITH SERRATED EDGES. THEY VIBRATE FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE DEFORMING BACK INTO ARMS AND HANDS.

REDACTED. (COUGHING. SOME NOISES OF PAPERS SHUFFLING.)...And so you followed her here?

THE BARBER. (COCKS HEAD SLIGHTLY.) My mission is to serve as an assistant and tool for private investigators, first among them Summerveil, and in the event of her disappearance or incapacitation, other PIs.

Image
ONE BEST SKILL Robotic physiology (the Barber is composed of mimetic polyalloy nanoparticles capable of extensive self healing, reshaping, and reformation, and movement through confined spaces).

TWO GOOD SKILLS Calculations and data storage (via onboard programming and detailed accumulated files). Being a cone of silence/white noise generator (via vibrations of nanoparticles to cancel out sound waves and also detailed accumulated files).

THREE FAIR SKILLS Imitation and impersonation (although limited by knowledge of impersonated subject’s life and times). Report editing (via accumulated files on how to eliminate unnecessary information). Providing haircuts (via accumulated files).

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS Separating parts of itself for different functions (typically only used for tracking someone, and limited by situation. If combat is expected, hard-coded directives do not allow the Barber to do so, to make it easier to keep track of separated trackers vs pieces blown away by battle damage). Strength above that of a human, although limited by the Barber’s size. Hand-to-hand combat, mainly focused on the use of edged weapons formed from its own body rather than any formal martial arts styles or systems. General firearms use, but limited to “point business end at targets and pull/hold down trigger until targets are down”; no skill at maintenance or specialization in use of any particular class of projectile weaponry.

MISC INFORMATION Despite lacking a sense of smell, the Barber prioritizes seeking out and acquiring all manner of pleasant scents, when not having an Agency assignment. Fresh bread, perfumes, colognes, new rainfall, and so on.

IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS, FIREARMS, ETC A large cardboard box in which to shut down and/or restart.

'Movements of the past have either attempted to resist change (conservatism), aimed for static perfection (Abrahamic religion, communism), passively accepted directionless change (capitalism) or reveled in constant destruction (fascism). Where Solarpunk differs is that it embraces change, but guides it to a greater good. In a sense, it combines the innovative, forward looking liberty of (classical) liberalism, the community and resilience of socialism, and the conscientious fluidity of taoism.'

CHARACTER APPLICATION

Image
PLAYER NAME/NICKNAME: Rodez

CHARACTER NAME: Javier "Oruga" Eliseo Luque Salazar

CHARACTER SPECIES: Vampire (Metahuman?)

LINK TO CHARACTER IMAGE OR DESCRIBE: Somehow Javier still thinks of himself as a conquistador, though some people would laugh to see him. Standing at 5'7," about average height for a 16th-century European male, he does not even make up this deficiency in musculature. He is not frail or thin, but his frame is decidedly unremarkable, his tone no more distinct than a 21st-century hit-the-gym-once-a-week male. At least he has a strong jawline and a playful, impish smile. Sanguine and chocolate eyes peer out bemusedly at whatever subject Javier happens to be observing, but they turn flinty when angry - especially when the Spaniard is struck with a bout of Tourette's, with which he has been struggling for centuries. His face is creased all over from the equal weight of grief and joy he has experienced over the years. Javier wears his dark hair long and loose, almost to shoulder length. His nose is uncannily hawk-like, and a little crooked from having been broken more times than it has healed. Finally, his fashion is right out of a mid-2000s action thriller: RayBans, leather jacket over wifebeater top: dust-covered jeans and dirty, once-white New Balances.

Image
CHARACTER CONCEPT: A vampiric Spaniard afflicted by an Aztec curse, which he is still in the process of figuring out. He's a frighteningly good pilot and a terrifyingly unpredictable social x-factor: his Tourette's makes sure of that.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: Though on first impression some may imagine that Javier is duplicitous and conniving, the honest truth is that he is only a little duplicitous and conniving, and really holds genuine good will towards most people, albeit under a layer or three of ironic nihilism and impishness. Under normal circumstances he would be something of a social butterfly, but Tourette's throws a wrench into his otherwise impressive and well-developed social graces. One never knows if he is going to successfully charm someone or cuss them out for being a Calvinist dog. Although he possesses the disease in moderate form, certain relief from it can only be found in the world of dreams, where, Javier has found, he can be the very best version of himself.

CHARACTER GOALS: -Javier desires more than anything else to forge a new life and a new identity for himself with the Agency. Now that he's been plucked out of his former life and time, he really just wants to start over - maybe on Slate, his vampirism won't define who he is.

-Living a little more freely. Being a blood-sucking bastard for the last five hundred years can really take its toll on one's psyche. Javier has often suppressed and subordinated his instincts and desires to whatever occupation he holds at the moment. Hopefully, in his new position, he can be free to act more like himself, with all of the horrific consequences that may imply.

-He's also a bit of a momma's boy, and wants to find his mother. Fidelia Salazar was a witch of some renown in 16th-century Asturias (NW Spain), and somehow Javier can still feel her life force, somewhere out there among the cosmos. He will occasionally receive broken and fragmented dream communiques from her.

CHARACTER WEAKNESS/VULNERABILITY: -Vampirism. Javier has all of the typical advantages and disadvantages associated with being a vampire. This means he has a dislike of intense sunlight, and enormous vulnerability to silver weapons and holy water.

-Dream death. Being a vampire basically precludes the possibility of conventional death, but his power as a dreamstrider comes with one hefty drawback: Javier can really be killed, finally and completely, when moving through the dreams of others.

CHARACTER BACKSTORY:
[RECORD OF JAVIER LUQUE'S APPLICATION TO THE AGENCY... TRANSCRIPT START]

[REDACTED]: Alright then, Javier, let's get started.

[JL]: You are aware of my condition?

[REDACTED][MULTIPLE VOICES][SHUFFLING PAPERS] - What? Oh, erm, yes, yes I have it right here. Tourette's, doctor's note. That's alright then, Javier. Can you tell us a little about yourself, where you came from?

[JL]: I was born in the village of Carracedo, Spain, not far from Santiago de Compostela, you know, the big Catholic pilgrimage site. It was 1489 or 1490, I can't remember which. Father was a soldier, born a commoner but had made something of himself. He pretty much made sure from day one that I was going to be a soldier too. A hard man, maybe too hard to love anyone.

[REDACTED]: I understand your mother has a special place in your heart.

[JL]: Of course she does, you fucking Calvinist dog! Sorry, there I go again. You see?

[REDACTED, LAUGHING NERVOUSLY]: Well, that's alright then. Please go on. Please.

[JL]: Yes, my mother was a wonderful woman. She was a witch you know - she was very good at hiding it. 16th-century Spain is not the sort of place you want to flaunt that. I've wondered if her gift has something to do with my gift. Can't help but feel that way, though I may never know for sure.

[REDACTED]: Yes, erm, what do you refer to it as? 'Dreamstriding?' Could you shed some light on how this came to be?

[JL]: Like I said, my father ensured that I was raised to be a soldier. As a young man, Spain's wars in the Iberian peninsula were winding down, so the best hope of making one's name and fortune was overseas. Accordingly, I signed on to join Hernan Cortes' expedition to Mexico. The campaign was being planned and coordinated from Cuba, so we were gathered there first. We landed on the Gulf Coast in April 1519, founded what is now Veracruz, and proceeded inland. I will never forget that.

[REDACTED]: So you - you personally knew Hernan Cortes?

[JL]: Yes. We were friends, after a fashion. He called me La Oruga - means, 'The Caterpillar.'

[REDACTED][MULTIPLE VOICES, MURMURING]: Why did he call you that?

[JL]: The hell if I know. Go ask his corpse. This was well over five hundred years ago.

[JL, CONT'd]: So we took Tenochtitlan, which you now know as Mexico City. We were bloodthirsty conquerors, totally triumphant. The best days of our lives. Not long after the conquest I was charged with exploring an abandoned temple. Cortes thought there was gold inside. I went in with a small party of men and soon got lost amidst the twisting and turning passageways. I . . . touched something. A totem of some sort. And I . . I changed.

[REDACTED]: This is where the Dreamstride first affected you?

[JL]: No, that was somewhat later. And it took decades for me to master it. What found me in that moment underneath the temple was something much darker. It inhabited me, and I . . . I killed the men I was with. My own brothers-in-arms.

[REDACTED]: You must be referring to your vampirism.

[JL]: Yes.

[REDACTED]: You'll be happy to know that you're not the first of your kind to work for the Agency, and that we have a safe and sustainable way to keep you supplied with blood.

[JL]: You son of a Turkish whore. You devilish catamite. Thank you. I appreciate the thought.

[REDACTED] . . .

[JL]: Look, it's just something you're going to have to get used too. I have a feeling you've handled worse.

[REDACTED][SOUND OF SCRIBBLING NOTES]: That's certainly true. So that's how you came to be, then. What have you been up to in the intervening centuries? And as a brief aside, there are several dimensions where the Spanish conquest of Mexico never occurred. I've even heard of one where the Aztecs accomplish the reverse, in Europe.

[JL][PERHAPS TRYING TO JOKE]: Means no Taco Bell then, huh? Ahaha. Well anyways, I kept a lower profile after my affliction with vampirism. I've participated in many of the formative events of Mexican history, including the War of Independence, the war against the Americans, against the French, the Revolution of 1911 . . . I've been around. Most of the time I made my living as a soldier of fortune, bodyguard, or criminal goon, but I've held some less unsavory positions as well. Did you know that I ran a Taqueria in Nuevo Leon from the 40s all the way to 1972? That was fun. I also moonlighted for a time as one of Castro's guerrillas. Not that I'm much of a Communist - it was just that I got bored with the domestic life.

[REDACTED]: And how was it that you got, well, here?

[JL]: Starting in the 1980s, the smuggling of marijuana, cocaine, and later heroin, across the border into the United States became big business. I decided that I wanted a slice of that. I became involved with the Sinaloa cartel and worked my way up the corporate ladder, if you know what I mean. Absolutely no different from climbing the chain in a white-collar office, except in this case you are having your rivals killed. Well, I climbed pretty high after awhile. Too high. In 2007, somebody ratted me out the federales, who came calling on my place in the Sierra Nevada. I went out in a hail of bullets, which is really the only proper way to go. Now I'm here.

[REDACTED]: I see; that's quite fascinating. Thank you, Mr. Luque. You may return to your room. We'll see about processing your application as promptly as possible. If you need anything, just ask.

[JL]: Thank you. Fuck your mother. Thank you for the opportunity. Heretical fucking pig. I'm very excited.

ONE BEST SKILL: -Dreamstriding. This is Javier's magical power, derived from his long-ago Aztec curse. Dreamstriding implies the ability to enter and exit the dreams of sleeping individuals at will, whether for communication purposes or to reconnoiter something in particular about that person, whether it be their hopes, fears, motivations, or immediate plans. The military and intelligence applications of this power are obvious. Javier's dreamstriding usually functions with a short operational range, but once he establishes a strong connection with someone, he can communicate through dreams over longer distances, potentially many hundreds of miles. The length spent in dream-world and the distance involved will certainly take its toll on Javier, however. For one, it will cause his Tourette's to flare up, sometimes drastically. For another, real, final death is always a possibility in Dreamworld, from which there is no coming back. Even the vampiric Spaniard has no defense against this.

TWO GOOD SKILLS: -Piloting. From the early 20th-century onward, Javier's great and unquenchable passion became flying. He has been in the cockpit of every flying machine imaginable, from 1920s biplanes to jetliners and jet fighters to various kinds of helicopters. He wouldn't be very familiar with spaceflight though, given his life and times his relatively recent recruitment.

-Combat arms. Javier was originally a soldier by trade. Although the centuries have seen him hold myriad different occupations, he has always made it his business to keep up to date on the armaments of the day. As a result, he is familiar with a wide range of modern firearms, though he's always preferred a good carbine and his trusty Colt .45. And anachronistic as it may be, he still has his old Italian rapier, and is pretty good with it, too.

THREE FAIR SKILLS: -Tracking. Javier has always dabbled with hunting, and through sheer practice has developed something of a keen eye for small game, big game - and people.

-Dancing. Yeah, he's pretty good. He's had a couple of centuries to practice the tango, after all. Caught up on modern dance and music up to about 2008. Big Wham! guy. Bring him to an event.

-Sociability. This one is actually kind of hit or miss. Under normal circumstances, Javier is pretty good at making friends and talking to people. However, his success depends on the intensity of his Tourette's at the given moment. Taking him to a party is truly rolling the die.

FOUR AVERAGE SKILLS: -Cooking
-Hand-to-hand combat
-Swimming
-Very basic medical skills

MISC INFORMATION: -Javier is a vampire, and will of course need to consume blood from time to time in order to remain healthy.
