We have mined all the resources we needed off of it, thereby allowing us to use the element (which I will not name, due to this very heavy element being the secret to our weapons and starship technology) we obtained to expand into the stars and leave Earth behind for good while the rest of the world destroys itself. Occasionally vacations are taken there and stealth fighter attacks are meant to stop the current terraforming effort to preserve this spot of vacation as well as prevent others from gaining a strategic advantage or even just a foothold in space. Evidence of our past presence can be seen by looking at the old mega-dozers and mining vehicles that were left there to rust. Also, deep valleys and step shaped depressions were our former strip-mines with some going as far as the inner mantle. Starship construction facilities are also present, rusting and abandoned. The remains of a single, failed starship can be visited inside a vehicle with heavy radiation protection installed. A native sentient species was discovered during our mining operations that lived in the natural depressions and in old lava tubes, which were then wiped out by the military force in secret so no one would try us for war crimes. Today, we are only a ghost of Mars' past, relics for tourists to visit.

In the Alathean universe there are several "Earthlike" planets in the solar system (with many others existing outside as well), one of which is indeed called Mars. Mars has been extensively colonised, and now has a population of over 2.2 billion people. Unfortunately, Alathea has no space program of its own. However, large numbers of Alatheans have emigrated to the space colonies (planets, moons and habitats) of other nations, resulting in a severe brain drain in Alathea and a huge demographic shift as immigrants from poorer countries rush in to fill the gaps. There are estimated to be around 350,000 Alathean Martians, including 25,000 residents of the Mars Gateway (a large rotating habitat built around Mars' first space elevator). Alathean Martians tend to live in the Anglish colonies, such as New Mercia, Edwardia and Ripley, where they speak a common language (Anglish) and enjoy equal status as citizens

Thousands of years ago, Mars lay under our control, and the Adeptus Mechanicus was ruled over by the Fabricator-General of Mars, the most esteemed individual in the entire Machine Cult, and the most holy protector of the gifts of the Machine God. But during a warp storm, Mars was lost to our Expeditionary Fleets, and Gamma-II became the new homeworld of the Adeptus Mechanicus until Mars could be restored. Mars is a lost world to the Adeptus Mechanicus, and although it resides within the Sol System, it is firmly under the control and protection of the Achainian Empire, which has not given the Adeptus Mechanicus any opportunities to revisit the lost Forge World, and worship the Machine God on his most holy world by restoring the lost forges, and rekindling his industry.

When Mars once again is the capital of the Adeptus Mechanicus once more, Gamma-II will fall into line, and the Martian Fabricator-General will rule once more, the provisional control of Gamma-II hopefully being a comparatively short lived regime when ancient Mars is once more the most powerful Forge World of them all.

Mars is one of mankind’s oldest colonies and one of the most-important member-planets of the United Federation of Orion.

In the centuries preceeding the formation of The Fedetation Mars was initially settled by several Earth nations in 2066 with the United States of America, People’s Republic of China taking the lead in colonization efforts closely followed by the Russian Federation, the European Union and the Republic of India. The initial settlements were limited to being research and mining outposts but over time they increased in size to become full-fledged cities.

The initial wave of colonists were confined to living in sealed-off domes built in the craters of Mars. But, as the terraforming process went on and made the climate suitable for humans the population size increased rapidly with the construction of numerous space elevators making travel and trade to and from Earth easier than ever. Later on the moons of Mars - Phobos and Deimos - were also colonized by the inhabitants of Mars to harness their resources and host many scientific outposts and prison facilities.

Today, in the year of 3218 CE, Mars is one of the most important planets in the known universe boasting a population of 5.1 billion inhabitants, being in top five of planets with the highest HDI and is also among one of the most economically and technologically advanced planets with it being a galactic leader in the sphere of pharmaceutical and medical technologies as well as IT and robotics. Mars is considered to be the unofficial top superpower of the Sol system competing for that status with Earth and Venus which has also been terraformed. Being the first planet to be terraformed also gave humanity the required technical knowledge to develop terraforming technology further allowing for the streamlining and shortening of the terraforming process on other planets and moons.

That being said, Mars still has life. There are several mobile settlements, "Landships" so to speak, that engage in war games for entertainment. It is a popular sport from the Culthax Ecumene, a nation situated on the outer rim of Triangulum, and is repeated across Arkeyana, with varying weapons, locomotion devices, and more.
