For someone who purports to have gone to law school, you really have absolutely no idea how contracts work.

When a contract expires, it is no longer in force and therefore legally speaking does not exist.


Does the situation only include one contract though?

In many employment jurisdictions you have a contract between employer and union and then a separate one for each and every individual worker

And the strike is justified in light of the previous contract expiring and no other solution being in sight.
