NationStates Cliches III: Revenge of the Summer Posting

Postby Valentine Z » Sun Sep 08, 2019 4:39 pm

So... part two got purged, and there were a lot of meaningful discussions made there - some nations called out, a lot of cliches stated... but overall, it is sort of a constructive criticism on everyone's part, so I figured that I would try to revive it again... hopefully for the better. Being called out doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing; it's a matter of you using that as a good source to break out of that cliche and perhaps work better on it. Or you can embrace the cliche in a good way, that works too. ^^

What cliches do you see this side of NS - in F7, NSG, RPs, and wherever else that you are around on NS?

For myself, a couple of things:

Eternally Happy Nation - Valentine Z is an epitome of this trope/cliche.

Nukes Destroy Everything - A nuclear war caused as much death as 3.2 billion (3,200,000,000) to a mere 510K (510,000).

Terraforming and "Magical" Science - Saved the world from nuclear fallout and somehow wiped out the radiation, and also brought everything back to life and normally.

Overpowered Characters - I have a few of them! Valentijn, Valentina, Clarissa, Gwen, a lot others from other nations.

Flag Waifu - Done that before. Joy from Inside Out, or Tracer from Overwatch.

Long Pretitles - Subverted? I have long names for my characters, not long pretitles. Still, they're super long!

Changed Faces - The Valentians have went through changes in their appearances.

Now the cliches I have seen so far (can apply to me as well):

Nukes Destroy Everything - When in doubt, this is used in an excessive amount. Most RPs have safeguards against this, thankfully.

Curbstomp - Unbalanced power levels and techs tiers.

Zerg Rush - When in doubt, overwhelm your enemy with large numbers.

Logistically Unsound - When you have too many troops and soldiers in terms of %, compared to the general population, e.g. 95% soldiers in a country as large as USA.

The Extremes - Either very capitalistic, or communistic, or dictatorial, or anything else. Middle ground nations exist, but are countable. (Valentine Z was a full-on socialist... once).

Edged Out - Endless ICly threats towards other characters.

Summer is Coming - Newbies that... while most learn and are willing to change, others... not really.

RL Inspirations - Germany, Russia, French, Spanish, the list goes on. Not necessarily a bad thing, of course!

Alternate Universes Galore / Darker and Edgier / Brighter and Nicer - I have a few of them myself.

Technological Advantage - Applies to most FT and FFTs that rely a lot on the tech. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Technologically Competent, Logistically Incompetent - With luck, a FT nation can have its butt kicked by a MT nation.

This is what I do to II RP threads that have no stated tech limit in title or OP.

My FT military has been rekt before by a MT army when I tried to curbstomp them.

A few grievances I have with the usual FT nation. I'm not saying this applies to every one of them but here are the most common ones I've seen before.

  • Rubber Foreheads - Humanoids are not the only body plan out there, and there is no way you have somehow evolved to look exactly like humans but with some very minor features. See below as an addition to this.
  • Godmodded Evolution - Why did evolution give you super strength, super speed, or superintelligence? Evolution does not work like that. I get it, you're probably pretty soft with science but come on.
  • Planet-cracking - This both incredibly wasteful and there's usually no reason to actually do this when you could bombard them into submission. Speaking of bombardment.
  • Overdone Threats - Pretty similar to Edge-Out except that they can usually perform these threats by sending an MT nation's star into a supernova or blowing up their planet. Why are you wasting resources killing people who literally haven't done anything but exist in your general area?
  • Interstellar Empire - Even the democratic ones. Why are you constantly expanding? How do you have the infinite resources and population to do this? Why is your government a copy-paste of something that exists or has existed on Earth?
  • No sense of scale - You do not send a battleship on patrol. I repeat, you do not send a battleship on patrol. +1 if everything is many kilometers in length and yet you somehow have the manpower, resources, time, and money to actually maintain and toss these things around like It's nothing.

FT nations often have the dumb militaries, and rely on their technology, rather than actual tactics or logic, and have no concept of morale, or logistics.

I think the overdone and pointless threats mostly are done because people want to wank all over people or are a pointlessly overly evil empire.

Don’t forgot how long it would take to do literally anything on a ship over a mile or kilometer. You’d have to drive to get end to end, your ship would need it’s own logics crew, and damage control would be a pain in the ass. Besides, who needs a big ship when all you need to do is launch some rocks and let space do the rest.

Also to be fair, why wouldn’t you expand your empire/nation? Colonizing a planet doesn’t require millions of people and billions in logistics and supply, a colony could be 100 people that are entirely or mostly self-sufficient.
Also humanoids are a pretty successful design, I don’t see any real problem with using a humanoid body design.

Dealing with this in sections- Yes, many FT nations entirely fail to account for tactics, morale, and logistics. I'm still of the opinion Visoran is a flawless meme-lord- Because his strategy is to just keep throwing endless hordes of robotic bodies at a problem, with an actual explanation for logistics. (He's heavily implied teleportation is used for all logistical problems.)

But onto the next section- The nations who simply copy and paste stuff from a wiki are the worst FT/FFT's IMO. But moving onto the other topics- It's because an over-expanding empire will, eventually, hit a limit of bureaucracy. As much as I dislike him, The Stellar Concordat is actually a good example of this- He referenced having huge branches of bureaucrats, (one of his characters is literally a civil administrator)- but he too fell into the trap of extreme sizing, with no explanation for logistical concerns- Even if he did explain the tactics of his forces. Especially in the category of planet cracking however, TSC was... Very damn guilty. (Every single battleship had 6 planet crackers).

Overall, I suppose it boils down to- Can you write your FFT nation well? No? Then get out. Yes? Then come, and stay a while. Kind of like the Metamen, (CTE'd, sadly).

Edit:

Just felt like tacking one last thing on-
I really suppose my opinion is
'Can you make your nation fit the universe it's in'.

Who’s Visoran?
There’s a difference between meme nations and nations that are meant to be taken serious, I usually give meme nations the pass.

I doubt having a bunch of small colonies will cause many problems, especially if they’re focused on producing something and kept happy. Sure, having a bunch of planets full of people would cause problems, but there’s not many actually habitable planets in the first place, at least not in a realistic distance.

Not many people care enough to put a lot of effort in their nations. But I don’t think people should have to to be on the site, sometimes it’s more fun to just have fun with it, putting lasers on your spaceships and having big ol close range space battles.

Visoran is... Well, he's, according to his own story, the puppet of another nation (Which he has refused to disclose), that was intended as a meme version of FFT, which became serious. His signature has one line which sums up his entire nation-
'And remember, an extra 1,559,226,879,360,000,000,000,000,000‬ Visora a day keeps the hostiles away!'..
So, in short, he's someone who's a mixture.

And, yeah. A small number of colonies would likely have little issue. It's when you start to spiral, that leads to chaos. (Frontier from Titanfall, anybody?)

And yes, the Stellaris route... I suppose i'm kind of a middle-ground aswell.

Japan-like nations and anime-themed nations - definitely guilty of this. However, I tried to mix it up by taking Hatsunia's inspiration (an anime-style personification of a synthesizer software) and applying that to an alternate-reality Japan that didn't neglect the importance of software development (also, real pictures, not illustrations). Japan-like nations also tend to go through the same path as the real Japan (i.e. becoming a cruel empire at some point), so Hatsunia's history is meant to represent an antithesis to that. It's also intended to address many criticisms of Japanese society, like xenophobia and homophobia ("the nail that sticks out gets hammered down" is a proverb that doesn't exist in Hatsunia).

Japan missed the software revolution. Hatsunia embraced it.

The excess of Germanic lands- I am guilty of this myself, although my main selling point is my emphasis on motorsports and throwing it into a Southeast Asian underground society that traveled to Germany in the time of peace in the 1850s, slipping by the opium wars.

Logistically Unsound - A lot of troops in a 300 km sized island, somehow also has 300 million people.
Navy and Olive Domain (CTEd)
Characters Super OP For Bad Reason - For obvious reasons. If you've seen Navy and Olive before the Domain CTE'd, then...yeah.
