Breaking news in South Africa today, as an offshore facility is seized by a private military unit, or “mercenary” unit if you will. Around six in the morning, local South Africa time, an offshore oil facility owned by Africa Oil Corp, centered out of Vancouver, was seized by a South African PMC. The facility has been abandoned for several weeks now and was due for deconstruction.
The PMC responsible for this takeover is known asThe Gray Devils, a growing private security and combat deployment corp based in South Africa. Made up of former security and military personnel from across the globe, and privately funded by American and European interest groups. The organization first came to stage attention during an incident in South America, involving a resource squabble between two South American powers several months ago.
This seizure of the offshore platform is perhaps the biggest and riskiest play yet made by the organization. While the South African government has yet to release an official statement in regards to this event, Africa Oil Corp has publicly and indignantly condemned this action, labeling it as a literal hostile takeover of company assets. Stating this to be a terroristic action by a rogue military company. There were no corporate personnel aboard the facility, and most of the oil based equipment had already been dismantled. However, caches of sensitive corporate files such as personnel rosters, resource manifests, and sensitive digital data were all presumably lost to the PMC during their takeover. While reporters were turned away at gunpoint by the mercenaries themselves and denied access to the facility, several financiers of The Gray Devils in the United States have spoken up. One in particular had this to say;
”The facility was abandoned and soon to be dismantled. We in fact purchased this facility directly from Africa Oil instead of having it go to waste. Despite any upcoming denials to this stament, we assure the international and corporate community that this was no hostile takeover. Executives within Africa Oil met with us and assured that our funded organization was granted full permission to this facility post-purchase. Wether Africa Oil is going back on their deal or this deal was made by those with less authority than we were lead to believe; this is not our concern. This facility is by purchase record ours and we can guarantee that The Gray Devils have no intention of surrendering it.”
Africa Oil has yet to make a response to this most recent stament.
