[Q] Would this count as posting on behalf of banned person?

Postby Araraukar » Sat Aug 17, 2019 4:32 pm

A friend of mine is currently on hopefully only a temporary vacation from being allowed to post on the forums, but we're both involved in a roleplay with a third person. We have written some things offsite (mostly dialogue/reactions between our characters, as posting it in a single post means no one-liner posts on the forum) for the purpose of being posted on the RP.

If I do that now, given that my friend is not allowed to post on the forums, will I get smacked for posting on behalf of a banned player?

Yes. In the past it has been deemed as circumventing a ban, and both the banned nation and the nation being used as a proxy get a DEAT.

There was an example last year (I think) of that happening.

This would be construed as posting past a ban, yes. Rulebreaking means that you serve the punishment of not being able to play here for the duration.

On previous occasions I'm sure I have seen both the nation originally banned and the nation being used as a proxy to rulebreak being deleted, has that changed?

The punishment for breaking forum rules in the first place is that you're not able to play here for the duration of the related ban, whatever that banned player happens to be into on our forums.

Policy on posting past a ban hasn't changed.

Okedoke. Thanks.

Speaking of this, I have a question: let's say you're given a ban for a given duration, but the moderator issuing the ban issues it incorrectly and the ban expires well before the stated duration. Would it be a DEAT-able offense to post if said ban had expired, despite being told that the ban would last longer than it actually had?

I'm curious because I was issued a week-long forum ban not too long ago, but it ended up expiring after a couple of days (I didn't post at all until the actual stated duration of the ban was up, of course, which can be easily verified by my posting history).

What? You mean, you were given a 10-day but the Mod didn't do it right and only logged a 3-day? Technically, you would be in violation, even if, technically, the ban had expired. Is that what you mean?

Yeah, that's what I meant. Just curious since that's pretty much exactly what happened, except it was a week-long ban (again, minus any posting-past-ban, of course, so we're clear lol) Thanks, Farn!

Sure thing. You might have grounds for appeal if you were dinged, considering we screwed up.

No, I wasn't dinged at all, at least as far as I know. I'm trying to work on that rule-breaking behavior, after all, so I made sure to wait until the stated duration of the ban was up before posting again. :P

Just to add to what Farn said...

Honest mistakes happen, both on Moderation's end and on the general playerbase's end; we're not uncompromising if we look back and go, "Well, shit, I dun goof'd" or if it's apparent a new player goof'd.

In the future, if you (or anyone else) find yourself in such a situation, file a GHR and let us know. (Note, I haven't bothered to check to see if you've done this, so, if you have, good on you; if not, good on you for adhering to the ruling anyway.) There really is something to be said for showing that degree of maturity, especially in the face of a ban - because, let's face it, no one likes to be banned, even if they themselves felt it was justified. Our ultimate goal with warns, bans, etc. is to change behavior; while I won't try and say if such happened we'd just say "Well, time served," something as simple as that... really does show us that perhaps that person isn't going to be a continuing offender and, speaking personally, says something about their intent to steer back from actionable behaviors in the future. </$0.02>

Understood, thanks Kyru. :3

In hindsight, it would've been a good idea to file a GHR about it, but seeing as how I was pretty fired up about the peculiarities of that particular ban at the time, it was probably for the better that I didn't, because in all likelihood I would've been an asshole about it lol.
