Sofi's Choice: US Border Edition

Last Thursday a Border Patrol agent asked 3-year-old Sofi, a Honduran girl with a serious heart condition whose family had fled after her grandmother and aunt were tortured and killed, to choose which parent she and her two siblings would stay with in the US. The other parent would be sent back to Mexico, even though Department of Homeland Security regulations exempt those with serious health issues from its unlawful "Remain in Mexico" program.

If you were Sofi, which parent would you choose? If you refuse to choose your whole family is separated and sent to different concentration camps.

fyi it is not illegal to enter the US at any point along the border or by any means in order to claim asylum. Also, due to the efforts of an MD contracted by the Border Patrol, the original agent's decision was reversed the next morning and the family was allowed to stay together in the US until their asylum hearing.

I can literally hear someone's laughs, and it makes me cringe because of how ugly it sounds.

Honestly I would, not that I could make such a decision at 3 years old, be ok with everyone going back to Mexico, I'd imagine the case is such that they'd be cared for if only by charities and human rights institutions.

I got bored and decided to take a trip through google maps, and I decided to tour the US' 2 exclaves in/near Canada (Not counting Alaska) and Derby/Standstead, and honestly, it's fucking stupid. You have places that only have like, 200 people living there, and there are still border security checkpoints and officers keeping watch of the place, and neighbors are literally not allowed to cross the street and visit each other in some places because they'd be stepping into the country and having their door knocked down by border security agents. Hell, some people aren't even allowed to use their backyards without checking with border security because part of their yard is in the other country (And they have camera's watching your yard, so don't think you can sneak around on your private property).

It's even worse with Mexico, because there's are entire cities split down the boarder, even though they're effectively the same on either side of the boarder.

God I wish the US would get it's shit together and learn to relax about these kinds of things, because it's ridiculous at best. Boarder security, immigration, asylum seekers, etc.. seriously needs to be looked at and reformed.
