"Git Gud" Soulsborne (From Software) Discussion Thread

Postby Impaled Nazarene » Sat Jul 13, 2019 9:47 pm

Some folks and I in the Paradox Thread were talking about how awesome Dark Souls is and noticing there wasn't a thread already for the series I decided to make one.
I am a huge fan since I first played it and I was hooked from the get go. I have played all three Dark Souls games but haven't played Bloodborne or Demon's Souls because console exclusives in this day and age that aren't made by Nintendo are absolutely toxic to the gaming industry. I have not played Sekiro either because it doesn't really appeal to me, and sure it's good but character creation along with builds and the ability to play however you wanted are vital to me. Also I suck at parrying even with the buckler so Sekiro would make me Git Gud in a way I could not imagine.

This thread is for the discussion of the games, their lore, whatever else, and other From Soft games.

Here is a quick run down of my thoughts on the games

Dark Souls: Best Overall Game
Dark Souls 2: Best High Points
Dark Souls 3: (Mostly) Best Bosses

I’ve only played Demon’s Souls, BB, and Sekiro. I haven’t finished any of them but I did get very close in Sekiro.

Although I’ve spent the most time with Sekiro, I just really like the look, feel, and lore of Bloodborne. I’m a sucker for sick transforming weapons and horrifying abominations in a Victorian-inspired setting.

Even though I've never played it I love Bloodborne for those reasons.

Am I the only one angry and sick about the fact From releases half of their games for consoles only? Like, I refuse to buy a console just so that I could play 1-2 games. It's just not a worthwhile investment. :(
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I agree, despite playing all 3 dark souls on the Xbox. From needed to get their shit together to make good pc ports for all of the games.
Even worse is how Prepare to Die edition was removed from steam for the Inferior "Remaster". Just let me buy Prepare to Die and download DSFix I have no patience for an inferior version of the game.

I have the same problem with Persona. I had to dowload the game for PC because I was not spending hundreds for a PS3.

Seriously. I mean, come on! Just take my money!

My first contact with DS1 was the new remastered edition and I find it to be very, very, very good indeed. In particular the controls were well ported to mouse and keyboard in my opinion. So I have no complaints.

I have the same problem with Persona. I had to dowload the game for PC because I was not spending hundreds for a PS3.

Basically the graphics are a downgrade, the only thing added was vamos' bonfire and the dried fingers given to the undead merchant. The game still has many gamebreaking bugs including those which can destroy your save. You'd be better off watching the video its pretty funny. When you have time of course.

It is such a shame that the PC port of Dark Souls suffered from feature creep and the problems of the Games for Windows DRM. The feature creep may well explain FromSoftware’s difficulty with the PC port.

I thought that FromSoftware should have just hired video game developers that know the PC platform to at least get the game working, and then let the modders do the extra content (like Grand Theft Auto IV).

Honestly I am not sure what you are talking about. I found the PC version of Dark Souls (remastered) to be both very fun and very well done. Like, I literally have no reasonable complaint for the game.

I guess that's fine. Most agree that if it was your first experience with DS1 it is more than fine, but people who played Prepare to Die or the original (consoles only of course) tend to hate it.

Fair enough I guess. It's just one of those things I'll newer get to experience and I don't mind missing out on because I don't want to buy a console. I may be a software engineer but that don't mean I am swimming in cash.

Stuck on nameless right now. Half-Naked Caestus only run is really painful for phase one cause that dragon's head seems to move whilst hitting it. The dodging for phase 2 is right out of DS2 making you dodge as late as possible so i have to use the blood ring so i don't have to unlearn the rest of DS3. Even without the blood ring i'm likely dead in 2 hits and his combo's are unpredictable. I need more patience to beat this fight.

At least his timings aren't as egregious as Fume Knight (dodge early when the whole second half of the game and all the dlc are dodge late) but unlike Nameless Fume Knight is easy.

Demon's Souls is only one I've not played. But DS1 is only one where I've completed both both main game and dlc. In ds2 I've only completed main story while I've not completed 3, BB or Sekiro. I didn't have antipathy towards remaster even thought I already owned potd, but I got that mostly for multiplayer reasons IIRC.

Someone seriously needs to do a staff only playthrough of a souls game. And I don't mean magic. I mean staff. As in you go around the game with only a magic staff for a weapon and only use it to beat people with as if it was a regular stick.

If we're talking From Software I think it's a crime you didn't include the best Soulsborne game.

I have DS1, DS3 & Sekiro, though I have played DS2 & Bloodborne. Gameplay wise I've never had any complaints, I love all of them, despite having beaten none of them. (seriously, I've had DS1 since 2015 and I've never gotten past Gwyn. I am trash.)
