Weather Discussion Thread

Postby Springfeal » Tue Jul 09, 2019 6:14 pm

With so many heated topics on NSG, maybe we should have a thread on something not so controversial. So, what kind of weather do you like and which type of climate do you prefer? Why?

I like mild, sunny days with a few clouds here and there. I just feel happier and more energetic on those days. My favorite type of climate is one with four seasons with white winters and mild to warm summers. I love the snow, but hate the heat. Some rain every now and then is nice too since I like to garden and it breaks the monotony.

I prefer temperate climates that have a mix of warm summers, but not too warm, and cold winters, but not too cold.

I like winter, snow, blizzards, that sort of thing. I have no idea why. Although I can say why I like the cold more than the heat, because the heat is harder to deal with.

I prefer snowy climate because you can build an igloo, a snowman and a snow angel but it is not as good as summer.

It's a mix of everything for me, depends on what I am doing. Usually, 3 things:

- If I decided to go out somewhere, I would like a sunny and clear weather. Those are the best times to take a photo, and you can go crazy with your camera's settings without ramping up the sensitivity too much.

- If I am going out for a purpose, like school, or an outing, or some other event, cloudy and windy weather, those moments before it rains.

- If I am sleeping on a Friday or a Saturday night, rain please! Give a thunderstorm past midnight.

Oregon is kind of like that.

I live in Scotland, and the winters get a tad too cold for my liking. The summers are warm, just about right in terms of what I find comfortable.

I agree with you 100% there on the heat being harder to deal with. At least with the cold you can just wear more layers of clothing.

How is the summer weather where you are? Or should I say winter in case you live south of the equator?

Cold, snowy winters and mild summers (below 20C). Sunshine only if it's really cold (below 20C). A subarctic climate with long, frigid winters (e.g. Anchorage, Murmansk) would be ideal if I'm feeling adventurous. Otherwise, a temperate oceanic climate with slightly warmer winters (e.g. Vancouver, Edinburgh) will do.

The weather here is 34C all year round and it's killing me.

34C? Yikes! I used to live in the American South (Louisiana) and it got that hot during the summer and it was pretty humid too. I can't imagine dealing with that year around. Where do you live?

I've always loved rainy and cloudy weather. Never understood why people like sunny days. Especially since I started my current (outdoors) job. Unfortunately, since I live in Louisiana, its almost nothing but sunny days this time of year. Triple digit heat is a regular occurrence, combined with humidity so high you could probably swim in the air. Desert dwellers know what's up when they talk about the dry heat.

I mean, to be fair, while Celsius makes more sense for chemistry, for every day weather, Fahrenheit is more intuitive. You know 0 or below is really damn cold, and 100 or above is really damn hot.

Though, in Kelvin, every outside temperature is triple digits.

90-103 F with very good, bright, puffy cumulus clouds and no prospect of rain. We get that kind of weather at this location, and I love it, love the sun; the sun will bake the resentment out of you if you let it.

Thunderstorms are fun to watch. I like the dry afternoons when there's lightning in the far off distance, but no rain overhead.

At least rain grows the plants.

I imagine you can get used to celsius, fahrenheit, or kelvin if you use whichever enough.

Spring and fall as they have balanced temperatures. Though I like elements of summer (like heat for severe thunderstorms; yes, I am an adrenaline junkie), and elements of winter because snowy nights make me happy for no reason due to city lights lighting up the sky.

What I prefer is basically severe T-Storms and hurricanes, and even a tornado or two. I know this is controversial, but that is why the Tornado Queendom is my OOC utopia.

No, not really. This is what we locals (especially those of us who survived Katrina) joke about as being "front porch weather". The only real differences (as far as the average person is concerned) between a tropical storm (especially the weaker ones) and a passing cold front are the lack of temperature change after it moves through, and the fact that the squall line from the front doesn't linger in an area for more than an hour. The main threats from this for metro NOLA and inland areas seems to be heavy rain, which we're already used to. Strong wind might be an issue, but then again, might not (usually, the strongest winds are confined to a comparatively smaller area than the general system, so you'd have to have a hurricane of significant strength to feel anything stronger than depression-force winds very far from the center of the storm). Tornadoes are always possible with tropical systems, but then again, they're also possible during fronts and popup storms (and usually, tropical-associated tornadoes are weaker than those caused by squall lines and popups).
