2019 Canadian Election

Postby Dresderstan » Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:00 am

It is now 2019 and in Canada with nearly 9 months left to go until the nation goes to the polls to vote for 43rd Canadian Parliament on October 21st, the parties are gearing up for what many have called to believe to be "the most nasty election campaign the country has seen."

This year will see if Liberal Prime Minister incumbent Justin Trudeau can hold onto a majority and go for a second term, or will Andrew Scheer of the Conservatives pull off a victory against Trudeau and maybe form a Conservative government? We also have Jagmeet Singh of the New Democrats running in third place to see if they can act as a sort of kingmakers in Parliament, as well as the Green Party led by Elizabeth May, the Bloc Québécois run by Yves-Francois Blanchet and the newcomer of the People's Party by former Conservative MP, Maxime Bernier.

And it's not just the federal election Canada has on it's hands, there are also some provincial elections as well. In Alberta on May 31st between the incumbent NDP led by Rachel Notley and the United Conservatives by Jason Kenney after the previous election pushed the Progressive Tories out 4 years ago, and leading to a merger between the PCs and the Wildrose party about halfway through the provincial parliament.

There's also an election on Prince Edward Island on October 7th between Liberal incumbent premier Wade MacLauchlan, PC leader James Aylward, who's resigning meaning a leadership contest to approach soon to see who will replace him, and the Green party surging into second place with Peter Bevan-Baker.

And literally one day later on the 8th there is an election in Newfoundland and Labrador between Liberal incumbent Dwight Ball, PCs Ches Crosbie and NDP's Gerry Rodgers.

But wait there's more! On February 25th there will be not one, not two, but THREE federal ridings to have by-electiosn to replace MPs who are resigning or have sadly died in office.

These are Burnaby South in the Vancouver metro area, and it's also where NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is hoping to win and join his NDP colleagues to officially be the NDP leader in the House and lead them to the election, in what could be a tough fight against the Liberals as in the last election the NDP held this by less than 500 votes.

Then there is the York-Simcoe riding in Ontario, a somewhat safe Conservative seat that the party has held onto since it's creation back in 2004.

And the last by-election is in Outremont in Montreal Quebec, which was also originally the seat of former NDP leader Tom Mulcair who's resigning led the NDP for over 5 years when he was in official opposition to the Tory government back in 2012, and had this seat since winning it in a by-election 2007 against the Liberals.

Needless to say 2019 is set to be an interesting election year for the people of Canada, so let's see what you guys think, what is happening and you you think will win what elections in Canada for 2019.

The New Democrats:

Trudeau has been tarnished by the corruption allegations against him. The conservatives are... endeavouring to take Canada back to the beginning of the century. If the ND had had a vibrant leader like Singh the last time, Trudeau would never have been prime-minister.

Canada has a choice between the past (Conservatives), the present (Trudeau) and the future. I think the future will win.

That wasn’t a question. The “who” refers back to Trudeau. US Intelligence refuses to share information with your government because you sent it to the Chinese. Then there’s the fact that your government willingly extradited a champion of HK democracy and anti-CPC sentiment to China.

Face it Trudeau is in the pocket of the CPC, it’s a wonder he doesn’t have a “made in China” sticker on him

The way I see this so far is being more of a fight between the Tories and Liberals with the NDP, Greens, Bloc and PPC being pushed aside. The NDP is going to do worse, especially in Quebec against the Liberals and in the central part of the country in the Prairies and Alberta against the Tories, with their only strong point being in the west coast. The Greens will make a gain or two on Victoria Island, but I don't see them getting much, unless they manage to win big in PEI. The Bloc... I honestly see them losing almost all of their seats tbh, no joke, I could see Quebec nationalism die if they have no representation. And the PPC will only draw ire away from more Tory right wing voters and I could see Maxime lose his seat regardless.

Here's how I feel it could go down. Trudeau wins re-election is the most likely outcome unless he royally fucks it up in the next 9 months and the Tories look to be the better option. The question however if he wins, does he still hold a majority, or goes into a minority, and I think he'll offset potential losses in the Atlantic provinces, Ontario and the Prairies and Alberta with gains in Quebec and possibly BC to retain a majority. Again that's just how I see it is right now.

My Liberal representative assured me that Canadian Net Neutrality will be protected. They made an investment into the coast guard giveing the Maritime provinces a better safety net, and I live in ontario so I'd think investment in it is a good idea.

Assuming he's not one already. ;)

I personally don't want Trudeau either, but I don't think there's enough as of now to push Trudeau out from government. At best, he leads a minority government for 2 years, (I think when a party fails to get a majority you have 2 years even with a coalition government with smaller parties, someone correct me if I'm wrong) and at worst he has a majority government and remains in power for 4 more years. The saving grace I can think of is his parliamentary majority does decrease.
