Postby The Democratic Marxists » Sat May 25, 2019 9:51 am

This is our third annual election, and, as you may know, the majority party in our Parliament is the Socialist Party, with their leader, Tuor Amiran, as PM. Voting will close when 600 MPs have been elected. All citizens, resident or expatriate, are permitted to vote (OOC: ANYONE CAN VOTE.) So join, fellow Marxitian, May you be Left, Right, or Centre, and excersise your right as a citizen!

Happy Voting!

The First Debate

Moderator: Welcome to the first nationally televised debate of the electoral season! Each of the candidates today are contesting to be Prime Minister of our great nation. Let's welcome the candidates: Incumbent Prime Minister Tuor Amiran of the Socialists, Opposition Leader Brandon Heartling of the Conservatives, Member of Parliament Gary Klunt of the PNF, and Member of Parliament Amelia Jortor of the Social Democrats. Unfortunately our final candidate of the Trotskyists could not join us today because he has not broken 1% in any national poll. This is a town hall style debate, and the first question goes to Prime Minister Amiran.

Questioner: Prime Minister Amiran, thanks for being here. As you know, you've made many breakthroughs in areas like peace talks, healthcare, the environment, and income equality. The economy is doing well. However, our unemployment rate has been steadily increasing in the past few months. Currently, a staggering 18% of the population is unemployed. Do you think this has something do with extremely generous welfare programs and a social safety net without an incentive to work? And do you plan to liberalize the economy to decrease unemployment?

Amiran: Thanks for the question. Unemployment is an extremely valid problem. I've talked to young people who are afraid that the jobs of the past will be eviscerated by the innovation of the future. People don't know whether they'll be able to occupy a stable, secure job when they're older. I'd like to remind everyone that before the Revolution for Independence, the unemployment rate was 26%. In the span of 2 years, our administration brought that number down to 18%. Our National Revitalization Act invested 1 trillion dollars in infrastructure, and created 13 million jobs. I've been working tirelessly to pass a Federal Jobs Guarantee, which unfortunately has been stuck in parliament due to the gridlock caused by the Opposition and third parties, as well as some members of my own party. I guarantee you that, if reelected with bigger numbers than last time, the Socialist Party will pass a Federal Jobs Guarantee Act. We just need more seats.

Moderator: Mr. Heartling, your response.

Heartling: The Conservatives have made job creation their priority. While Mr. Amiran makes millions off of his Marxist publications, we've worked tirelessly to draft legislation to give the tax payer a break and put them to work instead. Amiran is leaving thousands of kids behind while spouting rubbish about class warfare. We've lost almost 2000 jobs in the retail industry. We've decreased cheese exports 50% because of Amiran's protectionist trade policy. Basket weaving, once the pride of our nation, has been obliterated! We lost all of our basket weaving jobs in 2 years to countries with fewer tariffs and lower wages! Our basket weavers are out on the streets with no jobs! This is madness. It has to stop. My administration would decrease the corporate tax rate to 0%, we'd trim the fat from entitlement programs to pay for these tax cuts, and we'll get rid of the tariffs and bring the jobs back. Enough with the communist nonsense.

Moderator: Ms. Jortor, anything to add?

Jortor: Yes. I hate to even somewhat agree with my right wing colleague, but he's right in some sense. The tariffs have got to go. The trade wars have hurt our exports and have actually driven away the few private corporations that used to operate in the RNDM. The Social Democrats would preserve our social safety net while encouraging entrepreneurship with tax credits for small businesses, and more subsidies for people with innovative ideas. It's time we are smart, not wasteful or thrifty, with our dollars.

Moderator: Mr. Lunt, what say you?

Lunt: We're ignoring the main thing here: immigrants. They're infesting the fatherland and are driving down wages and stealing our jobs. The damn immigrants are throwing our workers out into the streets. I'm gonna end all this inclusive immigration crap. No more illegals. I'm gonna spend way more than 6% of our budget on law and order and border security. I'm gonna pull that number up to 12%. And I will decrease all immigration by 60%. No more rats. Our people need their own jobs. Finally, I'll get rid of the damn taxes! Average disposable income is at an all time low – only 2000 dollars! I will abolish the income tax and instead impose a national sales tax. The government should stop stealing from families.

Moderator: Mr. Amiran, the final word before a quick break?

Amiran: Many of the statements we've just heard have been exaggerations, misconceptions, or just flat out lies. Let me just say: the economy is doing well. Our GDP is 550 trillion dollars – the best in the region!!! And wages are not low; in fact they're at an all time high. Average income is at 159,000 dollars. And most expenses are free because tax dollars are utilized properly. Citizens are not suffering, quality of life has consistently been ranked as extremely good by international watchdogs. My opponents must resort to dishonesty because they know that we've done a good job. It's up to Marxitians to show the Opposition that the job will be finished by us.

Moderator: And with that, we'll take a quick break.

The American Empire formally endorses the Social Democrats. We also wish to denounce the Popular National Front, and we will place trade sanctions on you if the Popular National Front is allowed in the governing coalition.
The American Empire is a socially progressive absolute monarchy run by the heirs of Emperor Norton. It started off at MT but has rapidly advanced to PMT through interdimensional travel. All NSstats are used, except for tax rate and population. Factbooks are currently under reconstruction.

Moderator: We’re back at our General Electoral Debate! Let’s get to our next question concerning crime for Prime Minister Amiran

Questioner: Prime Minister Amiran, crime is an issue that is often extremely sensationalized in the Marxitian media. Riots and acts of terror in our nation are covered in such a way that any outsider would assume that this is an unsafe place to live. Indeed, the issue of crime has impacted your approval rating. But if we look at the stats, the crime rate is at an all-time low, especially violent crime. The controversy has come from police behavior towards citizens. Overpolicing, racial profiling, and mass incarceration are valid issues that your administration has failed to solve. That, and increased surveillance has led your opponents to brand your government as “Orweillian.” Do you have a plan to deal with law enforcement?

Amiran: The short answer is yes, I do have a plan. I’d just like to reiterate that crime is at 1%, an all time low. The strategy that we have employed to deal with crime has worked, however tough that policy may have been. And our people did not let us down. I’d like a round of applause for our service members, be they policemen, firemen, or anyone who volunteers for our community. (Applause) With that said, I will say loud and clear: we will hold officers to account for their actions. I am introducing a new set of training guidelines for new officers. Effective June 2019, all police officers will wear body cameras. And a new department will be established to deal with cases of race-based harassment by police officers. Racism is not tolerated in the RNDM. And police officers are not above the law.

Moderator: Mr. Heartland, how would you deal with law enforcement?

Heartland: Well first of all I’d fund ‘em. Amiran only spends 6% of the budget on law enforcement, including border patrol and surveillance. Officers should be able to protect themselves, and I think it’s a shame that 95 person of officers carry around a cudgel instead of a gun. So I’d arm officers, I think that instills responsibility. As for profiling, sometimes officers make the wrong call. But we have to recognize that they put their lives on the line for us every day. If they profile in the name of keeping us safe, so be it. I won’t stand by and be silent while officers are just blatantly disrespected by this government.

Amiran: If I might interject, I’d like to point out that I have the support of the National Police Union, not the Opposition and Mr. Heartland. And I’ve actually raised offciers’ wages, which Brandon voted against. Who’s doing the disrespecting here?

Jortor: Ok, can someone stop the boys from squabbling like toddlers? The Social Democrats and myself are the only voice of reason on this stage. I would support mandatory racial bias training for officers, not arming them so that they can kill people that they profile. But the real thing here is mass incarceration. Communities are being torn apart by dumb drug laws. I would treat crack cocaine addiction as a disease, not a crime. Let’s stop arresting people who need help. Finally, we have to get rid of the internet surveillance. This government cannot be allowed to become Big Brother.

Lunt: This all is ridiculous. You know what I’d do? I’d actually spend money on the military. And I’d have them patrol the streets for the immigrants who are murdering women and children in their neighborhoods. I’d have stricter drug dealing laws to decrease the trade, and fewer laws for warrants that deal with drug busts. Let’s put an end to crime, before it puts an end to us.

Socialist Party HQ

Tuor Amiran was troubled. The Socialists were faring much better than expected, better than the Conservatives so far – which defied what the polls had predicted. Nevertheless, it was a hardly a good performance for the governing administration which had once been wildly popular with the Marxitian public. Despite being known as a "well liked" leader on the international stage, Prime Minister Amiran had not yet received a single endorsement from a foreign government. Those had mostly gone to the Social Democrats and the PNF.

Which was the reason for his troubles. The Popular National Front had sustained a slight lead over the Social Democrats, and the results were suggesting that the SDP would not take the edge over the PNF. If there was a fear that Amiran had, it was his country being governed by an alt-right populist.

And therefore Amiran had called a meeting with his electoral advisers to decide the best course of action.

"Let's face it, we're not gonna pass the Social Dems or the PNF. And we need to stop Klunt and the PNF. I'm thinking about a coalition."

"But Mr. Prime Minister," an adviser piped up, "a coalition might signal to voters who have yet to vote that you are weak. It might only invigorate far right support."

"At this point it doesn't seem as though we have much choice. Have you talked to anyone about a potential team up?"

"Yeah," his campaign manager replied, "I have. The Trotskyists are 100% willing."

Amiran snorted. "As if they'll be of much use."

"...and the Social Democrats said that a coalition would be conditional upon Amelia Jortor being the PM and having her pick of who occupies cabinet positions. And they'd only do it if the PNF was crushing it in votes, which they're not. It's still close."

Amiran stroked his chin. It wasn't much use creating a coalition if the Socialists weren't in the leadership roles of the cabinet. Still, they had to beat the PNF.

"Give Amelia a call for me, will ya?"

Social Democratic Party HQ

Amelia Jortor stared into the Prime Minister's eyes and gave her signature intimidating frown. Polls were merely days away from closing, and all the projections were indicating a solid win for the far right PNF. This was also projected to be the largest amount of seats designated to the Social Democratic Party, and Jortor did not want to lose her party's influence as the Opposition Party. However, it was true that allying herself with the Socialists could help propel herself to the leadership while preventing a PNF government. The only thing left was getting past these tricky negotiations.

"Prime Minister Amiran, the number one condition of this deal is that I become Prime Minister. Are we agreed on that?"

Tuor looked across at her and shook his head. "Look, Amelia. You're an intelligent woman. The last thing the country needs right now is big change. We need stability. Let me govern, and I'll fill the cabinet with whoever you so please."

"No." Amelia shot back. "I guess the deal's off." She turned to her security detail to escort her out of the room.

"Wait!" Tuor almost yelped. Without a coalition, the Socialists were almost certain to have a tiny portion of parliamentary seats. They would be absolutely irrelevant. Tuor knew this was his only shot at a win.

"Alright," he finally gave in, "you be PM. But I want to have my pick of 60% of the cabinet seats, including Foreign Secretary and Commerce Secretary."

Jortor was only half satisfied. International affairs and trade were issues that she had campaigned hard on. What was the point if Socialists were in charge of those departments? Whatever, I'll just figure it out in Parliament.

"Ok," she grinned, "it's a deal. It's time for the New Left Bloc to crush the PNF."

Official Update From RNDM Board of Election Oversight

425 constituencies have counted votes and closed polls, which means we more than halfway through the election. The recent announcement of the Conservatives and PNF forming a coalition known as "United Democratic Union" has led to the right wing retaking the reins from the left. However, it is a small gap, as the Trotskyists have recently announced a handover of their seats to the NLB. It is a virtual deadheat between the UDU and the NLB, with only 185 seats left. Here are the results so far:

United Democratic Union: 215 seats
New Left Bloc: 210 seats

430 constituencies have counted votes and closed polls, which means we have only 170 constituencies left to count. It is a virtual deadheat between the two coalitions, the UDU and the NLB. Here are the results so far:

United Democratic Union: 215 seats
New Left Bloc: 215 seats

Major Update From RNDM Board of Election Oversight

515 constituencies have counted votes and closed polls, which means we have only 85 constituencies left to count before it's over! In a surprising turn of events, the SDP has far surpassed the PNF in being the largest single party in Parliament. The NLB coalition has only 1 seat to win before the election can be called in their favor. Here are the results so far:

United Democratic Union: 215 seats
New Left Bloc: 300 seats

Major Update From RNDM Board of Election Oversight

535 constituencies have counted votes and closed polls, which means we only 65 constituencies remain to be counted. However, we do have a winner. After 600 seats have been counted, we will release the final tally. However, the New Left Bloc, led by the Social Democratic Party and Amelia Jortor, has officially won the majority seats in Parliament. Ms. Jortor has been elected PM of the RNDM, which means that this is the first time in our history that the Socialist Party is not leading the government. This is also the best performance ever by the nations right-wing parties, which when combined control 220 seats in parliament as of right now.

New Left Bloc: 310 seats
United Democratic Union: 225 seats
