FOR THE GREATER GOOD

In Character

Albus Dumbledore lost his duel against the Dark Lord Grindelwald in 1945, who maintained his Mastery over the Elder Wand. As a result, Grindelwald's forces - both Magical and their Muggle puppets - won the war for Europe. Dumbledore did not die, and indeed was rescued from Nurmengard, but this bitter defeat forced the man into hiding.

In 1946, the Statute of Secrecy was destroyed rather permanently as the Dark Lord personally oversaw the destruction of Muggle governments, and the various Magical Ministries of Europe unite under his organization into the First Magical Empire. Grindelwald's Empire eventually stormed the British Isles, and with the assistance of the local blood purists united under the leadership of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, the Empire was victorious.

The International Confederation of Wizards sued the Empire for peace, even as they forged tentative alliances with their Muggle governments because of the Statute's breaking. Grindelwald instead forced the ICW into agreeing that any Magical Ministry who wished to join his Empire could do so freely - and many did, whether out of fear or out of genuine desire to be free from their Muggle governments and be open about their Magic.

By 1950, the First Magical Empire came to cover most of the eastern hemisphere - with the Dark Lord Grindelwald at its head. Under the Empire, there has come to be a certain hierarchy in society: Muggles at the lowest rung, and Purebloods at the top.

Meanwhile, Albus Dumbledore and his Order of the Phoenix have begun sponsoring various Magical and Muggle resistance groups within the Empire's territory - they are known about by both the ICW, United Free Nations (their Muggle counterpart for the Americas), and the First Magical Empire.

Gellert Grindelwald believes that this society will eventually achieve humanity's greatest feats, and so for the Greater Good, he waits for the day his Empire reigns over the Earth - supreme and whole.

But, for Albus Dumbledore, his greatest failure has cost most of the world its freedom - and so it is for the Greater Good that he and his Order continue to help those oppressed peoples' fight against Grindelwald's regime...

Hello, everyone, and welcome to For the Greater Good. This is a roleplay set within the Wizarding World - in an alternative universe where Albus Dumbledore lost the Duel against Grindelwald, and everything went horribly wrong from there.

In this world, Grindelwald reigns supreme - with other Dark Lords governing the various states under the Empire's grasp; Voldemort, for example, in Britain. The roleplay takes place during what would've been the Post-Marauder Era (1981-1990).

This roleplay will be taking place within one of three locations: Britain, under the rule of Lord Arcturus Black III - who, himself, is aligned with and under the Empire's (and thus Grindelwald's) protection; what was once New York City of the United States but is now the capital nation of the United Free Nations as well as the International Confederation of Wizards; or in Nurmengard Castle, the prison-palace from which Grindelwald reigns and wherein his personal prisoners are contained or tortured.

With that in mind, you can take one of three roles depending on where you place your character: a member of the Order of the Phoenix (or a sponsored resistance member) in Britain - or maybe one of the Knights of Walpurgis, who serve Lord Black and his right-hand found in Lord Voldemort; one of Albus Dumbledore's Order within NYC or a common, normal witch/wizard/Muggle in the city - maybe even an Ilvermorny graduate or current student; or one of Grindelwald's prisoners or maybe a witch/wizard in his inner circle (perhaps, even a spy placed there by Dumbledore!).

In the end, the choice is yours.

APPLICATION:

Name: Gellert Grindelwald
Age: 98.
Sex: M.
Appearance: The Dark Lord Grindelwald.
Personality: Grindelwald still has the charismatic charm that he had in his youth, but now with the benefit of massive experience and political power. He has mastered many arts over the years since his successful conquest, both of the Dark Arts and in other studies. His age has made him no less fanatic in his belief that it is for the Greater Good of mankind that Wizards rule over Muggles, as it will surely allow society to advance into a brand new order of peace and prosperity. He has grown a slight blood-purist ideal within that, but he rarely shows such.
Species: Human wizard (with Seer abilities).
Allegiance: Dark Lord of the Magical Empire.
Biography: Since his victory and conquest, Grindelwald has not been idle with the nigh-absolute power his position had given him. After the war was put into what he views as an indefinite but not infinite hiatus, the Dark Lord delved into his studies of all the Dark Arts and magic in general. He also focused on growing and empowering his Seer abilities - to the point that it is very difficult to surprise him, as he can peer into the near-future rather easily and even in the middle of a conversation without losing any focus.

This, combined with his Legilimency skills, has made it extremely difficult to duel him and survive - and it only gets harder as time goes on. Grindelwald's studies have allowed him to undergo numerous rituals that would allow him to keep his youth as well as to live for far longer than a normal wizard, for he believes that only he can bring about his vision of a brighter future for mankind and for his Empire.

Grindelwald has brought about the elimination of all the old remnants of Muggle society and law. Now, there is only the Imperial Codex - which, while Grindelwald himself did not set it up, he has approved it and allowed amendments to be made to it by his inner circle if he thinks it will not harm the Empire or his goals.

Currently, the Dark Lord is using his Seer abilities to try and determine what Albus Dumbledore's plan is, and when they may next duel - this time, however, he intends to kill Albus for his betrayal against the Greater Good...

APPLICATION:

Name: Norðurstjarna "Járnsíða" Sigurðsdóttir, kona Norðurlands

Age: 27, born 1953 May 28th

Sex: Female

Appearance: Norðurstjarna is a woman of rather unusual colours. She has indigo hair - the results of an alchemical accident in the late '60s - mostly just brushed down one side and eyes of olive green. Her tan, although light, suggests many hours spent under the feeble northern European sun but her lanky body, certainly that of a scholar, suggests that not many of those hours were spent in sports. Her ceremonial attire is semiformal, including a short-sleeved but half-collared gray shirt and a long, light indigo coat with one stiffened shoulder that somewhat complements her hair, under which sits a synthetic leather bandolier and a belt of the same material holding up dark-grey pants. In more private settings or during experiments and field expeditions, however, she is far more practical in her clothing, and gives off an appearance that charitable souls might describe as "rustic," "unique," or "innovative."

Personality: Those who know her describe Norðurstjarna as an often rude and distracted person with a crass sense of humour, disinterested in the interest and welfare of others and with an obsession for doing things "correctly," but also a fair and just woman who is loyal to those who are loyal to her in turn and admires the capable who achieves great things, no matter who - criminal, non-wizards, sometimes outright rivals - they are.

Species: Human witch.

Allegiance: Empire, as the kona Norðurlands, Lady of the North.

Biography: Norðurstjarna "Járnsíða" Sigurðsdóttir (1953 May 28th - ) is the current lady of the North, crowned 19th June 1973, co-chairperson and first speaker of the Roskilde Institute of the Magical Sciences, and daughter of Sigurð Arnarsson, the first imperial lord of the North.

She was born in the Niðarós magical community to the infamous Sigurð Arnarsson who engineered the 1946 assimilation of the Swedish non-magical government under its domestic Ministry of Magic. Coming from a relatively established family of witches and wizards, Norðurstjarna had a relatively privileged and elite upbringing. Unusually for the Scandinavian magical elite, and because Sigurð as a budding statesman who was often keenly aware of his own shortcomings deemed it necessary for his daughter to learn of foreign languages and customs, she began her magical education in Koldovstoretz (as a result of which she has an excellent command of, among other languages, Russian) and only later transferred to Durmstrang where she graduated as part of the class of 1970. Reports from her time as a student paint a picture of a budding eccentric, a highly intelligent and studious young woman with inexplicably low grades. It is thought that this is perhaps where she began her first forays into the non-magical natural sciences and the more esoteric aspects of general magical theory and the origins of magic, which would remain her interest in the decades hence.

After a few years of work as a minister and advisor to her father Sigurð in which she was never particularly interested, she inherited the title of herra Norðurlands after her father was untimely killed in a mass terrorist bombing in Copenhagen, shortly before the planned opening of the Department of Heredity in the Nordic Ministry of Magic. Despite believing in a magical and paternal bond between herself and the land and people she inherited, Norðurstjarna was never particularly interested in the specifics of rulership, and largely let administration of her realm fall under the control of the advisory council her father established while she pursued her research.

She is therefore best known not for her status as one of the Empire's many local lords and ladies, but as the mystical first speaker of the Roskilde Institute, on one hand burying herself in old Norse as well as Greco-Roman and ecclesiastical texts in attempts to divine their long-lost ancient secrets and thereby obtain great power, perhaps even immortality in the fabled philosopher's stone, and on the other hand using the non-magical understanding of the natural sciences to develop ever more powerful spells, one of which is rumoured to have been used by Grindelwald himself.

Her latest project, and the reason why she has essentially lived in Britain for the past two years, is an effort to tap into the vast magical energies coursing below the surface of the Earth in the form of ley lines to awaken a vast number of children of non-magical heritage as potential witches and wizards - a project which, if it succeeds, she believes will give the Empire the last decisive advantage it needs to finally collapse the reactionary and ancient establishments of the International Confederation of Wizards and establish over all the world a New Order suitable for the times. As part of that effort, she will need to establish an anchor stone at several powerful ley line intersections in around her realm, one of which she believes might be found somewhere in northern England.

In terms of her personal life, Norðurstjarna is not married, and to the best of anyone's knowledge has never been courted by anyone, partly to her father's despair. She does, however, have many close friends from both the Roskilde Institute and her childhood home town of Niðarós, many of whom hold seats in the advisory council and help her rule her realm in her many absences from it.

Interesting. I'm guessing she's probably at least working with Lord Black or Lord Voldemort in terms of local British forces. She also has the opportunity to be summoned to Nurmengard (as it is both the capital city/castle and unassailable prison of the Empire simultaneously), considering she's likely involved with some of Grindelwald's inner circle (if she isn't apart of it herself).

Welcome, Plzen.

The collision of worlds here is pretty interesting. Perhaps it's time to see how magic fares against a Barrett fifty-cal in the hands of a resistance sniper a mile away. Fighting back as a muggle will be a fun challenge.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Oh, sounds fun, Norv! I suppose your muggle is going to be apart of the British Resistance? Or, mayhap, a member of the Order (or one of its UFN/ICW associates) who goes out on missions with other members? Or something else entirely?

I'm interested to see where you go with a muggle fighter, though. Should be interesting.

Welcome, Plzen.

She's probably working with Lords Black and Voldemort in the sense that her activities are approved by the local authorities, but probably not much more deeper than that. The Roskilde Institute is often seen as the magical equivalent of mad scientists, and even was that not the case Black and Voldemort, anti-muggle-born as they are, are probably not terribly eager to back a project to give magic to muggle-borns.

As a lord of a territory so close to the imperial capital, she is probably de jure a part of Grindelwald's inner circle, but as I've mentioned in my application rulership and statesmanship aren't things that interest her terribly much. She would probably leave the advisory council to handle any paperwork between her office as the lady of the North and the imperial throne at Nurmengard, unless it's an important meeting where non-attendance might offend Grindelwald. She's also probably not trusted all that much because of, again, her relatively moderate stance on muggles and muggle-borns.

As you might already be aware, in Axis victory RPs and the occasional superpower RP (of which this RP is, technically, both) I've played a Scandinavia that tried to retain its customs and relative liberty not by resistance, but by working with the system from the inside.

The relations between Nazism and occultism, tenuous as they are, continue to feature quite prominently in popular culture, and considering that this is a setting where magic is real I figured it would be really interesting to do something along the lines of ancient power, forbidden knowledge, that sort of thing.

Also I've been playing a lot of Crusader Kings II recently and my head is full of medievalist romanticism.

1 + 1 + 1 = ???

And that's how I got this character idea.

That makes sense. Interested to see where you take that.

So she shows up to Grindelwald's more “official” meetings with an inner circle (mostly formed up of those who rule on his behalf the world over), but probably doesn't get too many invitations to “unofficial” meetings where Grindelwald only summons the inner circle of his most trusted followers/supporters. Gotcha.

As you might already be aware, in Axis victory RPs and the occasional superpower RP (of which this RP is, technically, both) I've played a Scandinavia that tried to retain its customs and relative liberty not by resistance, but by working with the system from the inside.

Well. That's very interesting, Plzen - I look forward to seeing where all of this goes.

I think he'll be a member of the Resistance trained by the Order to work with (and against) wizards, as well as with other muggles. Fighting against magic is sort of like the ultimate asymmetrical warfare, so various forms of camouflage, misdirection, ambush, booby-trap, and sniping will be essential in avoiding a head-on confrontation. Plus, wizards will never have had to deal with the possibility that some unseen rifleman could kill them with one shot from a hidden roost halfway across London. It's not the sort of threat that magic is best suited to defend against. So a skilled sniper could inspire a lot of terror, which is always critical to resistance operations in itself.

This is one of the reason by which my character justifies her somewhat more (not that she's some kind of egalitarian angel or something, but in comparison to Grindelwald et al) pro-muggle stance.

The muggle armies/police having dealt with snipers and gunpowder warfare for centuries and having developed a vast array of techniques to deal with both, why would she try to substitute their expertise with her inexperience?

Norðurstjarna's demesne is rather outside of the scope of this RP, but it's probably a fascinating place. I might worldbuild it a bit more if and when I get the time.

Right, I can see how that'd work out. So, more of a scout/support role than a direct confrontation fighter (mostly out of necessity as he probably has only whatever magical defenses he's been gifted via magical objects rather than anything inherent to his person as a muggle) - picking off stragglers as well as taking potshots at leaders.

And he probably wouldn't deny himself the opportunity to take out Lord Black or Lord Voldemort should that present itself, but that's probably something we should worry about much, much later (and when there's a player for those characters unless they end up NPCs, mostly so that the player who plays them can have an opportunity to talk things out when we get to a plot point that could allow for such).

Exactly. It'll also help that, as a muggle, he can disappear into the oppressed crowds of the Empire for the purposes of reconnaissance: figuring out the movements of his targets, assessing their security, planning where to set up his roost or plant the bomb. I'm going for a certain Jason Bourne anonymous assassin feel here.

Sounds good to me. I'm really excited to see your application, sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

This looks super sweet...

I don't have a clear direction as to what role to develop a character into... but I did buy into two suggestions in the OP.

One is for an Order of the Phoenix member who is rescued from Nurmengard early on... my initial thought was that the escape and the way Grindelwald & Empire-gang deals with it could be an interesting plot point.

Another would be a spy for Dumbledore in Grindelwald's inner circle who would, to be free of any suspicion from the Dark Lord himself, be one of the more essential and brutal minions.

Any thoughts?

I’d absolutely love to join in, but I don’t wanna commit until exams are through next week, so we’ll just have to see, I suppose.

The former would have to probably wait until we have enough players in the Order to do that as well as commit to any plot points in America or Britain, as well as other factors. The latter sounds like it could be fine either way, to be honest. Sorta like a necessarily worse Snape, in terms of having to be uber-brutal to avoid suspicion.

That's fine - there's no rush. I'm sure this'll still be open by then anyway. Maybe the IC will even be up, if we have enough players by then.

I'd like to reserve a member of the Inner Circle...specifically the King of France.

Edit: Currently have an idea on the Kingdom of Gallia (France) which is essentially under a semi-autonomous status within the Empire. They make their own laws, elect leaders, etc.

I know what I’m gonna do. An Anglo-Burmese Viceroy for the Magical Raj, which envelopes the historical British Raj, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Tibet, Afghanistan, Thailand, Indochina, mainland Malaysia, and Singapore.

What I’m planning on making is a high-ranking insider for Dumbledore who oversees a conglomerate of former Asian colonies with a benevolently blind eye. I think you’ll rather like the character I put together, as long as this whole deal is more or less approved.

Interesting. I'm thinking of playing as a Wizard with a gun.

This application is a sort of twist on a canon event from the Potter timeline. Also, if the post I created for my character (essentially head of the judicial department, equivalent to the position of Head of Department of Magical Law Enforcement in the Ministry of Magic) doesn't fit with the world you had planned out, then I'm willing to change it to whatever you suggest.
APPLICATION:

Name: Bartemius Crouch, Sr.
Age: 52
Sex: Male
Appearance:
Image

Personality: When the name Crouch is invoked, one word springs to mind: Order. Bartemius Crouch is obsessed with order, rigidity, and law. It is his passion, and he goes to dangerous lengths to see that it is enforced. Rulebreakers are to be given no lee-way, dissenters no voice, traitors no chance to plead guilty. Crouch serves the New Order with zealous fervor, not so much because of a devotion to Grindelwald or the notion of a pureblood empire, but more so because of the power it brings him and the rigid law it places over the world.
Species: Wizard (Pureblood)
Allegiance: The First Magical Empire
Biography: Born to an immensely respected family of Pureblood stock in 1938, Bartemius Crouch was still in his formative years when the First Magical Empire sprang up. He was trained at a Hogwarts whose education was mandated by the newfound Empire, and so came to be a rabid Pureblood supremacist in his youth. Magically capable, intelligent, and lusting for power, Crouch joined the administrative body of the Empire immediately after graduating from Wizarding school.

With his knack for administration, Crouch quickly ascended the ranks of the Empire's judicial branches. He became renowned and feared for his totalitarian attitudes and zero-tolerance policy toward dissenters. Crouch advocated for captured enemies of the Empire to be tortured and executed alongside their families and friends. The effectiveness of his methods earned him promotion after promotion- and by the 1980s, Crouch was both a household name throughout the Empire and one of Gellert Grindelwald's most trusted lieutenants.

Assigned to the high-ranking post of Chief Judiciary, Crouch ensures that the fist ruling the Empire is made of iron- by vigilantly enforcing Grindelwald's doctrines of terror. One of the hardliners of the new regime, Bartemius is now advocating for Muggles to be placed under constant surveillance and for key "troublemakers" to be rounded up and sent to camps where they cannot infect the rest of the population with their nonconformist ideas.

While Crouch achieved a great rank in the New Order, he spent too much time in his office and not enough at home. His son, Bartemius Crouch, Jr., did not inherit his father's dedication to the Empire. Instead, Crouch, Jr., is rumored to have run away from home and joined the Order of the Phoenix, mostly just to spite his father. These rumors caused great embarrassment for Crouch, though no one is sure of what really happened to his son.

I can assure you that my writing has developed since those posts, but I mainly write nation-RPs instead of character RPs, so I couldn't scrounge up any better examples.
