Denerian-CoastEdge Maredith Conflict [IC/MT/Private]

Postby North Deneria » Mon May 13, 2019 6:58 pm

1243 Hours - March 23, 2008
Fort Pherings, Outskirts of Amorath - the capital of Maredith

Brigadier General Erik Argel licked his dry lips in anticipation. He was readying himself to carry out today, at exactly 1500 H, an overthrow of the dictator run government of Maredith. He felt his blood boil and anger flow whenever he thought of Alexander Dragonov. His family, along with many others, had suffered from the corrupt and painfully inefficient government of Maredith. Food was always short and personal and political rights were only thought of in the wildest of dreams. They were the fortunate ones. Many others' physical and psychological well being had suffered greatly at the hands of Dragonov and his cronies.

He had long wished for a chance to shoot the despised Dragonov in the head and when he was offered a chance to do exactly that by the North Denerians, he jumped at the opportunity. His long and tortuous climb up the military ladder had finally proven its benefit for Erik Argel in the form of the fulfillment of his greatest wish. He stood ready, like thousands of others, to storm government buildings, communication centers, transportation hubs, and military supply bases. Major General Smithers had personally promised to him that all of the soldiers under his command would not attack Argel's 4th Brigade as they stormed the capital and that they would help stop any attempts to do so. Argel trusted Smithers to uphold his side of the promise. Now, it was up to him to make sure he upheld his.i]

1356 Hours
Kerns - the headquarters of the revolutionaries

Johan Skeller had been the center of a flurry of activity right before the planned overthrow. There had been seemingly endless plans to review, endless last minute requests to be approved, and an endless battle with the fear that the revolutionaries had already been discovered. Skeller had been one of the members of the High Council of the revolutionary movement. He was now preparing himself to announce to Maredith and the entire world of the overthrow of the old regime and the installment of a democratic one.

Desperately needing a break from the busy and worried atmosphere of the HQ, Skeller walked outside. There, he saw the last of the AKMs and ammunition smuggled from North Deneria finally be sent to the people who most needed them after a five day delay due to a miscommunication.
'Sometimes, it seems to me that fighting at the front would be easier than having to worry about all of this,' he thought to himself. 'Who am I kidding, I'm a coward. I would rather worry myself to death than have to fight on the front lines. Doesn't mean I'm a bad person though.'

With a resigned expression, he walked back into the HQ. 'So many things to do. One of these days, I'm going to go on a vacation, maybe to a beach in North Deneria. I heard its quiet and safe there. Worry free too.'

1432 H
President Erich Schneider's Office, North Deneria

President Erich Schneider had finished preparing for the incoming revolution. After convening with the Denerian Diet three hours ago for the last time, he had retired to his office to rest. North Deneria's military had been quietly preparing for the upcoming military intervention in Maredith for months. After much debate and arguing among his top advisers and officers, an agreement had been reached where the 12th Infantry Brigade "1st Grenzers" would be sent to Maredith by plane first, escorted by the Long Range Tactical Strike Group. The 43rd Brigade, commanded by the irascible Lukas King, would be sent by ship, escorted by Task Force Leviathan. Against protests from the Army against ground forces being transported by sea in a 3,000 km trip for 6 days. The Air Force had pointed out that Kapan and the RCE would most certainly intervene if North Deneria tried to support a revolution against the RCE supported government and that Kapan's Air Force would present a serious threat. They had also pointed out that the lackluster airfields in Maredith would complicate and heavily delay an airborne transportation - sending the 12th Infantry by air was already too taxing. After much thought, President Schneider had decided upon sending them by the less risky sea option.

Brigadier General Lukas King had simply shrugged when he was given the news. The only thing he had complained about was "the unfair fact that the 12th Infantry foreigners get to draw blood first". Now he, along with thousands of overs tramped on board readied transport ships.

1455 Hours
Fort Pherings

After instructing his soldiers to wrap white bands on their left arms, the agreed upon identification for any person fighting for the revolutionary cause, he convened with his officers one last time.
"Okay people, we all know out jobs, correct?"
A chorus of enthusiastic agreements greeted that simple statement.
"I'll save the big speeches until after we have liberated Amorath. Until then, I wish you all good luck. Dismissed."
After a short flurry of salutes, the gathered officers shuffled out of the room with a purposeful gait.

5 minutes later
Soldiers advanced up Zvigo Street, occasionally halting their advance to take cover when the occasional burst of bullets zipped overhead.
Captain Vigory thought to himself, 'The MIDs are being surprisingly quiet about all of this. What with them being all fanatical about Dragonov, you would think that they would be the ones fighting the people out in the open for on-'
Before he could correctly identify his misgivings, he found his answer all too readily apparent on the cloud of bullets flying at him.
"We're under attack. Take cover!" he yelled, moments before a bullet tore into his face and killed him.
His soldiers rushed hurriedly into cover to fire back at the gathered MID forces.

March 24th 2008 1 day after assault on Amorath
General Andrew Carter is at his desk filing through the daily intelligence reports when suddenly a communications commander bursts in without warning. "What the heck do you think your doing" says the General. "Sir we just received word that a huge revolution has broken out on Maredith Amorath has fallen if this keeps up we will lose our already fragile foot hold on the Denrik Sea." Crap the general thought to himself Alexander had one job to do for RCE and he failed "Get me Colonel Jerry Parker tell him we have a job for him and his commandos"

Captain Vigory would become the first of many to die on that fateful day. After the fall of Captain Vigory, the command of Company B fell to Lieutenant Modrian. At that particular moment however, Lieutenant Modrian was a little bit too busy taking cover to care that his command had expanded from a, now disorganized, platoon, to 3 platoons and a heavy weapons squad. However, the sergeant that had assisted Captain Vigory did care.
"SIR!" Sergeant Kuchler yelled over the zips of bullets and the roar of automatic weapons. "You are in charge of the company! With all due respect sir, you need to go out and command it!"

The majority of what he had been saying was lost of the sounds of battle, but Lieutenant Modrian quickly got the message. After realizing what he had been doing, he quickly stood up and ran to the nearest group of soldiers. 'I can't be a coward here. I have to show an example for the troops.'

As soon as he reached the relative safety of the squad of cowering soldiers, the soldiers' silent pleas of help and leadership greeted him.
"Okay, you two," he yelled pointing to a machine gunner and a rifleman, "cover me. As for the rest of you, you are all charging with me. If any of have smoke grenades, throw them now in front of us." Half assured by the forced calm of Modrian, the soldiers began throwing out ever single smoke grenade they had in their pockets. Coughing from the quickly growing cloud of smoke, Modrian gestured to four soldiers and Kuchler, motioning to them to be ready to charge.
"I want five shot bursts from you," he ordered while pointing to the machine gunner, "and you shoot at anyone who is about to shoot at us. Got that? Good." Modrian motioned them to begin firing. As soon as they had began, he motioned for the gathered soldiers to advance.

When he saw that they were getting out of cover and running up, he, after temporarily pushing back his fears, lept out of cover and ran for the safety of an alleyway 12 meters up the street. Upon reaching the alleyway, he looked back to see the sergeant lying on the ground, wounded, and the 4 other soldiers cowering behind a pile of trash only 2 meters from their previous position. While desperately yelling to them to advance and promising to himself that he would beat them up later, he saw a MID agent standing up and taking aim at the four cowering soldiers. He quickly gripped his rifle with two shaky hands, took aim, and held down the trigger.

TWU CHUE TWU CHUE TWU CHUE TWU CHUE TWU CHUE

After realizing that he had been closing his eyes and blindly firing on fully automatic mode, he hurriedly loosened his finger and put it as far away from the trigger as possible. '"I really wasn't meant to be a soldier. Why did I even sign up for the officer corps?' After pondering his predicament for a moment, he realized that he had been trying to kill a MID agent. After searching for a panicked moment in fears that he was about to be shot at by that agent he realized that the agent had been killed and was now lying on the ground dead.

Before he could have his short moment of victory, a burst of bullets from another MID agent's SMG shook him out of his dazed victory state. He ducked behind the alleyway and realized that he had been very lucky to not have been killed while acting like an idiot. With a sense of dread, he also realized that at hundreds of more MID agents still held the capital even if the city was officially declared "liberated". Now armed with a grim understanding of his predicament, he waited for a lull in the firing and ran back to his own troops; he prepared himself to have to face those fearful bullets at least dozens more times today in the fight for Amorath..

OOC: Could you remove this part so that I may RP my own characters and respond accordingly? A North Denerian ground forces general wouldn't be worrying over SAM systems and airspace penetrations in Maredith when he hasn't arrived in Maredith and when he's a general.

Meanwhile, on the ground, it was a very sleepy noon. It was raining hard, and most of the soldiers were either exercising or sleeping.

Brigadier General Lukas King, arguably the most bored of them all, was daydreaming about being a chef back in North Deneria (if he wasn't a Brigadier General, he knew that he would have chosen that as his occupation), when he got rudely shoved back into the real world.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT!?! I was just sitting here thinking of what the best way to cook a, I mean thinking of a battle plan, when you came and DESTROYED MY ENTIRE TRAIN OF THOUGHT!"

"Uh," Radar Mission Systems Operator Jonas Martin, now scared, says. "We ha-ave locat-ted an unk-known plane fly-ying above us rig-ght now."

"What?," replies King. "Are you sure it isn't North Denerian or from the Republic of Maredith?"

"Positive si-ir," trembles Martin. We ar-re sure."

"I am approaching the intruder," barks Milo Long into his headset.

"Good, what is the plane we are intercepting?" says King.

"It appears to be an Airbus A330 MRTT, most likely one of Kapan's," replies Long.

"Well, it looks like Kapan cannot take a warning. Destroy the target!"

The F-15E fired an air-to-air missile hitting the right engine of Flight 1939 and causing it to explode, along with the rest of the plane.

"Mission accomplished, I have successfully destroyed the target, heading back to home base," reports Long.

On his way back to base, however, he can't help thinking how similar the tanker looked to a Kapanese Airways plane.

Devon Miles looked upwards to the sky and saw a large formation of very large planes.
"Captain, planes in the air!" he shouted while waving at his captain nearby.
Before he could form a more descriptive sentence, human shaped dots could be seen in the skies and parachutes had begun opening among them.

Devon Miles froze in his spot, stricken with panic. He was not the only one to do so. Of the 87 men in his paramilitary unit, 76 of them also stood frozen in panic. Before the situation could turn into a massive rout, Captain Sherick began firing in a calm and controlled manner and the incoming commandos. Many of the soldiers who had been considering running away had their spines stiffened and began to fire into the air.

Captain Sherick grabbed his radio and contacted Lieutenant Colonel Evans, commander of the regiment that had attacked Arinit Air Force Base.
"Sir! Paratroopers from the air. Definitely not the 1st Airborne Division. I am already firing into them sir."

"Good. If they are not ours, shoot them up. I have not been notified of any foreign airborne forces operating in this area, and if they are, I'll take the blame. Shoot them up," came the reply.

Much of his indecision gone after hearing the desired reply, he was hit with an epiphany and realized that with a MANPAD, he could easily shoot down several of those slow moving planes. After desperately searching for a FIM-43, he found one in the hands of a soldier who, through little fault of his own, had no idea how to operate it.
"Give me that," he ordered while yanking the MANPAD from the confused, and now scared, looking soldier's hands.

After looking around to make sure that his soldiers were still firing, he aimed through the scope, waited for a lock on, then pressed the trigger. The missile leaped out of the barrel, almost desperate in its search for its prey. Its rockets lit and it jumped forward, in a hunt for its prey, a slow moving C-130.

Almost immediately bullets are flying everywhere and already commandos parachuting are being shot out of the sky. Their Screams send shivers up your spine when you see them falling. Though many of the commandos hit the ground and take cover. "Take cover and take them out" yells the Colonel as he hits the ground. Then a burst of bullets comes straight at him he was lucky to find cover in time but the burst kills 2 commandos behind him. The commandos that were left quickly dispatched the rebels outside of the main building of the airfield. As they enter the building where headquarters were they saw a group of MID agents barely holding out against the rebels even thought the airfield technically belonged to the rebels. The Colonel seeing that the Rebels were currently occupied yelled to the commandos remaining "let's get them boys!" They quickly charged and dispatched the rebels. Some rebels though saw the attack coming and were able to kill some of the commandos but the tactic worked and most of the rebels were caught by surprise and the MID agents were relieved and the airfield was there's.

400 men died that day but this was a key step now the RCE has a place to land aircraft for more reinforcements and supplies.

March 27, 2008
1152 Hours
Seokyo International Airport, Kapan

It was a rainy day at Seokyo International Airport, in Seokyo, the capitol of Kapan, where the flight crew of Kapanese Airways Flight 1939, a 3-month-old Airbus A330-300 destined for CoastEdge, finished boarding. Of the 429 seats, only 12 seats were not taken. Because of the slick conditions, however, many flights from many different airlines were getting delayed, including Flight 1939.

"I regret to inform you, but we will probably be delayed for upwards of an hour on the ground here because of poor conditions," said Captain Hiro Hyun-On. Groans could be heard in the cabin.

Groans could be heard in the cabin.

"We are, however, trying to get off the ground as fast as possible," added Hyun-On.

Unfortunately for Flight 1939, they were not alone: Seokyo International is one of the busiest airports in world, with 764,543 total movements in 2007. Even with these poor conditions, planes were taking off and landing just like if it was any other day. They were put into a line to takeoff on Runway 15, after 17 other planes, with the waiting planes as diverse as a Bombardier CRJs to a hulking Airbus A350.

1320 Hours
Seokyo International Airport, Kapan

After what seemed like forever, they finally got permission to takeoff. Flight 1939 taxiied on the runway, and began takeoff roll. Captain Hyun-On pushed the throttles to full power.

"V1," read First Officer Riku Suzuki.

The A330 was picking up speed fast.

"Vr."

Hyun-On began to pull back on the side-stick, and Flight 1939's nose began to lift off the ground.

"V2." Flight 1939 was successfully off the ground.

"Goodbye Seokyo, hello CoastEdge!" remarks Hyun-On.

1432 Hours
Over the Denrik Sea, about 200 miles from the coast of Kapan

Most of what happened over Kapan was uneventful. The majestic dormant volcano Mt. Suji could be seen briefly, however, causing tourists that were visiting Kapan to quickly take out their phones to snap a picture of it. Soon after that, a thick fog covered the windows, and passengers could only see to the winglet at the end of the wing.

1453 Hours
KSS Munehito, 20 miles off the coast of Okinaha, Kapan

"SIR, I THINK WE HAVE AN AIRLINER THAT IS DEVIATING FROM ITS COURSE," shouts military air traffic controller Miku Tanaka over the din of airplane engines on the aircraft carrier.

"WHAT?" shouts back supervisor Rohan Saito.

"I THINK WE HAVE A PLANE THAT IS DEVIATING FROM ITS PLANNED COURSE."

"WHAT? TALK LOUDER."

"I. THINK. WE. HAVE. A. PLANE. THAT. IS. DEVIATING. FROM. ITS. PLANNED. COURSE."

"WHAT?"

"YOU KNOW WHAT, NEVER MIND," replies Tanaka, now frustrated.

"They will find out their mistake somehow sooner or later," Miku Tanaka says to herself.

"Right?"

1556 Hours
Over the Denrik Sea, about 50 miles from the coast of the main island of Maredith

Unlike what Tanaka thought, Flight 1939 kept on drifting away from it's planned path, now 397 miles away. Flight 1939 was supposed to go around the coast of Maredith, which was mandatory for all commercial Kapanese planes, to reduce the likelihood of an accidental shootdown. If the route was uncorrected, the Airbus A330 would fly right over Maredith.

Northeast Coast of Maredith

1557 Hours

Walter Alfar had been monitoring the radar station in the northeastern mountains of Maredith for 8 hours. He had just finished preparing to leave his post and be relieved the the next radar operator when something caught his eye on the monitor. There was a plane in the air, quickly approaching Maredith's northeast coastline at 800 kph ground speed. The airspace around Maredith had been closed for several days and no military flights had been scheduled either. Alfar hurriedly moved his hand towards the telephone hanging just a couple feet away. In his hurry, he knocked books over, sent important papers flying, and spilled his cup of coffee everywhere on important documents. These only served to increase Alfar's initial panic after seeing what was almost certainly a "hostile military plane" nearing Maredith.

Alfar dialed Airspace Defense Headquarters as fast as possible, getting it wrong several times in the process.
Before anyone could respond or question, Alfar jumped into a panicked torrent of questions, "Who's on the line? Anyone? Is this ADH? No flights were scheduled right? Are we getting help? Please respond!"

The curt response came and interrupted Alfar. "This is ADH, please calm down and inform us of the problem."

After breathing deeply and telling himself that nothing was wrong, Alfar began speaking in a shaky voice.
"A large plane has been detected flying at 9,400 meters and going at around 800 kph ground speed. It is headed on a nearly direct course for northeastern Maredith. It is 78 kilometers away from the coast. If it continues flying straight, it will have its closest point of approach to Kerns be 6 kilometers off the western side."

"Have you been able to confirm the identity or the plane? Is it civilian or military?"

"The airspace has been closed for days now. Its definitely not civilian. No pilot would be stupid enough to try to fly across an active war zone, or even worse, fly across a war zone without even telling the soldiers that they were going near the area. And you can't "just get lost". This is the modern age; you can't just get "lost", right? Oh, but it looks like an A330. I'd bet my life on it, its an A330. But the Kapan Air Force uses those as transports and modifies them as bombers right? Isn't Kapan an enemy to Maredith?"

"But have you been able to confirm the identity of the plane? I don't want speculation, I want confirmation."

"No. the plane's identity is unknown."

"Thank you." The phone cut off and Alfar fell into his seat in relief that he wouldn't have to worry about anything now.

1602 Hours

"This is the Airspace Defense Headquarters. Come in Sentinel SAM Battery."

"This is Sentinel, what is the issue?"

"Radar Site Point Worth detected an unidentified plane approaching northeastern Maredith on a direct course. The plane is currently just about 25 kilometers from the coast. It will approach very closely to Kerns. Point Worth thinks its an A330 and HQ agrees. Be advised that although the A330 is a civilian plane, the Kapan Air Force uses A330s as tankers and uses converted civilian planes as bomber crafts. If converted, the A330 may be used to attempt an airborne invasion or be used on a bombing mission. We are currently attempting to contact it, but we have had no success so far. If the plane penetrates inland of at least 5 kilometers inland, you have permission to fire upon the plane. Normally, we would get an interceptor to try to warn the plane off but as you know, that is impossible right now."

"Orders understood." He then contacted his battery to brief them on the situation.

1610 Hours
"Sentinel SAM Battery to ADH. The unidentified plane is now over Maredith. It is 6 kilometers inland. Permission to open fire?"

"This is ADH. We have been unable to reach the plane. You may open fire."

As Captain Mayors, the commander of Sentinel Battery, prepared to order SAM Alpha to open fire, he couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't right. 'That plane is flying a little lower than what most passenger planes fly at. And no nation in the world would use commercial planes on an airborne attack. Kapan only has 747 as bombers. A330s are only used as tanker planes and only as tanker planes. Why are we firing on it?

He nonetheless contacted SAM Alpha. "This is Captain Mayors, Lieutenant Danzig, fire one SA-2 on the unidentified plane."

"Understood. Firing. Missile away," came the reply.

1610 Hours
Over Maredith

Even though there was heavy fog, it was nonetheless a normal flight for both Captain Hiro Hyun-On and First Officer Riku Suzuki. Suzuki had flown this route a dozen times before, in clear conditions, in rainy conditions, and even once in snow, but this time he couldn't help but feel something was wrong.

"Hey, are you sure we are flying on the right course?" asked Suzuki. "I don't know, I just feel like something isn't right."

"Of course we are flying on the right path," replies Hyun-On. "I've done this route hundreds of times, I know when something isn't righ-"

Hyun-On got cut off because of a sudden and violent shake, with the lights subsequently turning on and off. A few seconds later, the cockpit telephone started ringing.

"Hello?" answered Suzuki. "If it's something about the shaking, tell the passengers that it was probably turbulence, and there is nothing to worry abou-"

"No," replied Flight Attendant Akari Jeong, cutting off Suzuki. "There is something to worry about. The port side engine is on fire."

"WHAT!?" replied a startled Suzuki. "Captain, we have to do something!"

Hyun-On, was unresponsive, mentally thinking of a possible answer to what just happened.

'Engine failure? Maybe, but both of the engines were serviced just three days ago. Birdstrike? Maybe again, but there were no birds visible to me during the incident...'

Captain Hyun-On kept at this until he came to attempted shootdown.

'Airplane shootdown? No... but wait,'

Hyun-On remembered the last shootdown in Kapanese history, a Boeing 767 that strayed over enemy territory, got mistaken for a Kapanese Air Arms plane, and got shot down over the ocean. He specifically remembered the incident because his best friend Reo Yamato was on that flight when it got shot down. The shootdown later had a major influence in his life, and it was that which eventually made him decide that he wanted a career in aviation, first as a Kapanese Air Arms pilot, and later a commericial aviation pilot. Hyun-On couldn't help but remember the last time he saw him, right before he left to the airport...

December 12, 1996
Seokyo, Kapan

It was a snowy December day in Seokyo, where Hyun-On lived, and he was watching his favorite show on TV when the doorbell rang. He ignored it, but the doorbell rang again. Confused on who would come to his house at this time, Hyun-On nevertheless opened the door.

"Do you want me to freeze on your doorstep?" said a laughing Reo Yamato. "All I wanted to do was say goodbye before I leave on the flight!

"Well, I would have let you in quicker if you told me you were coming," shot back Hiro Hyun-On. "Come on in."

"Thanks," replied Reo Yamato, as he tracked in snow from his boots. He went to the comfy armchair where Hyun-On was sitting before he let Yamato in.

"Watching KoKo's Crazy Adventures I see," remarked Yamato. "And I thought you said you didn't like these types of shows..."

"Well, times change, don't they?" replied Hyun-On. "Anyways, do you want to eat anything before you go?"

"No, you know me, I get a stomachache if I eat anything before a flight," said Reo. "Anyways, I should probably be leaving..."

"You haven't even been here for five minutes!" replied Hyun-On.

"Well, my flight is leaving in a two hours..." said Reo sheepishly, knowing that it would take thirty minutes to just drive to Seokyo International from Hyun-On's house.

"Then why'd you come then!?" replied Hyun-On. "You will probably miss your flight if you don't leave now!"

"I just wanted to say one last goodbye before I leave," replied Reo. "I won't be seeing you for over a month, I mean."

"Wow, you're making this seem like a final goodbye."

"Well, it's not. I know I will see you again. Anyways, see ya!"

"Have a safe flight," said Hyun-On, waving to Reo as he walked to his car, and drove off.

'I know I will see you again.'

How Hiro Hyun-On wanted those words to be true.

1611 Hours
Over Maredith

Back into the real world, Hyun-On was still thinking of his friend's words, when a hysterical Suzuki started shaking Hyun-On's shoulder violently.

"WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO!?!?! ARE WE GOING TO DIE!?!? IS THIS THE END!?!?" screamed Suzuki.

"Calm down, I know what to do, we accidentally strayed over a warzone. There is a friendly CoastEdgean airbase nearby, according to the map." replied Hyun-On calmly, and also knowing exactly what is going on.

'Weird, it seems like thinking of such a chaotic event like Reo's shootdown, made me calmer and more knowing, not the opposite,' said Hyun-On to himself.

"Oh. Wait, a WARZONE!? How did we manage to do that!? said Suzuki.

"I don't know, let's think about this after we land, okay? replied Hyun-On.

Turning on the cabin intercom, Hyun-On announced, "Hello passengers. I know that we have an engine on fire, so we will be turning around and heading to a CoastEdgean airbase in the area. Please buckle your seatbelts, and bring your seat into the upright position, if you haven't already."

Hyun-On pulled the control joystick to the right, and the damaged Airbus subsequently banked to the right, heading towards the CoastEdgean airbase.

1612 Hours
ADHQ

Lieutenant Alent, with suppressed excitement, reported the situation to Captain Derian through his headset.
"Captain Derian, this is Lieutenant Alent. Sentinel SAM Battery reported a hit on the bogey. Wait. Hold for one moment captain."
Lieutenant Alent then switched frequencies and began listening to a second report from Sentinel Battery.

"This is Captain Mayors, I have further information on the engagement of the bogey. Our radar readings shows that the bogey has changed directions and is now flying away from the northwestern coast of Maredith. I suspect that it is going to try to skirt around Maredith the best it can to avoid being fired at again and, if it is in fact a Kapanese military plane, to try to reach the RCE airbase at Agen Island. It has slowed down significantly and its altitude is dropping. From my assistant's calculations, and his work checks out, we hit an engine and a wing, but not the fuselage. He says that if we had scored a critical hit on the fuselage, the plane would be slowing down dramatically to avoid breaking apart or be starting to shed pieces of itself all over the sea."

"Captain Mayors, do you know if it will reach the RCE airbase at Agen Island? Does it have enough altitude and speed to avoid crashing into the sea?"

"I am not sure. If the plane does not break apart too badly and isn't too badly damaged, it may have enough altitude to attempt a landing at the airbase. I'm not sure though. There are too many unknown variables to be sure. Even if we knew every single thing about the condition of the plane, this is the kind of problem that would require an entire university mathematics department and a dozen computers to be able to determine for sure."

"Roger that. Can you fire one more time to guarantee a kill?"

"I would not recommend that. There is a good chance that hit was fatal to the plane, not to mention the fact that SAM missiles are in short supply."

"Roger that. Thank you for the detailed report."

Lieutenant Alent switched frequencies and began reporting to Captain Derian.
"Sentinel Battery suspects that they hit an engine but not the fuselage. They have detected the plane changing directions away from the island, but not too extreme in direction shift. They suspect that the plane will try to skirt the island and land at the nearest RCE airbase at Agen Island. They are not sure if it will make it. They do not recommend firing again as they expect the plane to be unable to survive landing and because missiles are in short supply."

"Thank you lieutenant. And wipe that weird smile off your face. This isn't the first time you're taking part in a combat engagement. Well, it is, but don't look too much like a young schoolboy discovering a new toy. People are going to die and that isn't Christmas. Oh, and stop talking like a robot and speaking in simple and disjointed sentences."

"Yes sir."

"Tell Sentinel Battery that they did a commendable job and that they should be on the lookout for more attempts to penetrate the Maredith airspace."

"Yes sir."

b]1620 Hours[/b]
About 75 Miles from Coles AFB, a RCE controlled Air Base

Meanwhile, on the damaged Airbus A330, it was only a few notches away from total disorder. Passengers were either crying, screaming, or looking out through the window with expressions that looked like they wanted puke. Flight attendants were running throughout the cabin, trying futilely to calm all the passengers down.

It was no different in the cockpit; First Officer Suzuki was back at screaming in Captain Hyun-On's face, who seemed to also be uneasy. Different alarms were trying to get their point across, making the cockpit a noisy mess.

"I DON'T THINK WE WILL MAKE IT TO THE AIR BASE!!! AND IF WE SOMEHOW MAKE IT THEY WILL THINK WE ARE AN ENEMY AND SHOOT US DOWN!!! THERE IS NO HOPE!!! WE ARE GOING TO-"

Hyun-On cut-off a bawling Suzuki before he got anymore hysterical.

"Seriously, calm down," snapped Hyun-On. "How did this guy pass flight school when he acts like a 5 year old?" said Hyun-On to himself.

Telling himself Suzuki will get fired after Kapanese Airways finds out this, Hyun-On told himself to be calm, and kept on piloting the plane.

1632 Hours
About 50 Miles from Coles AFB, a RCE controlled Air Base

In the flaming engine, things were also chaotic. Even though the engine was turned off, it was still on fire. Even though no parts of the engine were moving, the fire was moving closer and closer to the fuel tanks in the wing...

1634 Hours
About 50 Miles from Coles AFB, a RCE controlled Air Base

Back inside the plane, the passengers (and Suzuki) stopped shouting, and things were slowly getting back to control. Some passengers resumed talking among themselves, and others proceeded to taking naps.

Suddenly, a loud boom rocked the entire plane. The passengers started screaming again, and for a good reason: the entire wing of the A330 was on fire.

"Captain, we have a major problem," frantically said flight attendant Ming Choi.

"Yes," said Hyun-On as he wrestled the controls of the plane. "Don't worry, I can take care of this. What's weird is that it feels like I lost control of an entire wing-"

"You have!" replied Chui. "The left wing is on fire!"

"WHAT?" replied Hyun-On and Suzuki, both shocked.

"I don't think there is much we can do now since we have no control over a wing... WE ARE GOING TO DIE FOR SURE!!!" cried out Suzuki.

Hyun-On knew Suzuki was right.

1640 Hours
About 30 Miles from Coles AFB, a RCE controlled Air Base

The Airbus A330 was in a steep nosedive, shortly after the wing disintegrated. Most of the people on the plane passed out, including Suzuki. Hyun-On, however, was not, as he was staring outside the cockpit windows.

As the plane broke through the clouds going well over 900 KM/H, Hyun-On began to reminisce on his life.

"Well, looks like everything is wrapping up now," thought Hyun-On. "This was a good life though.

The A330 was beginning to approach the ground.

"1000," blared the altitude callout on the plane.

"Looks like this is it."

"500."

Hyun-On began to think about the last words his friend said to him again.

"100."

""I know I will see you again," said Reo on that fateful day," said Hyun-On to himself.

"50."

"He was right."

"10."

"We will meet in heaven."

Kapanese Flight 1939 crashed into a field at Maredith, subsequently exploding into a fireball. No one aboard the plane survived.
Hmm, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the Mazda 787B?

March 29, 2008
Outskirts of Dinsmark, Deneria Proper
Fort Penn - Strategic Command Center

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" yelled President Schneider. After he yelled until his throat was hoarse, he pounded his table in his office with the emotions of fury and frustration clearly visible on his face.
"Why did they have to make a complicated situation a thousand times worse!"

After forcibly calming himself down, Schneider grabbed the telephone on his desk and punched in numbers.

"This is President Schneider. Captain Schimmler, could you inform everyone in the war council to hurry up and come to Fort Penn? This is urgent, top priority, if you will."

"Aye sir. If I may ask, what warranted this sir? You normally don't call the entire war council to a meeting this urgently."

"Classified for now. Just tell them to get over here."

"Aye sir."

President Schneider tiredly hung up the phone.
'Let's get myself cleaned up,' he thought to himself.
After hurriedly straightening his suit, he began walking down to War Room Alpha.

1 Hour Later
The war room, which had been empty and quiet just 1 hour ago, was now filled with high ranking officers and politicians, all nervously whispering to themselves in concerned voices. They all knew that something was up, something most likely unpleasant.

President Schneider made a gesture to quiet the room and began speaking.
"There is a very good chance that Kapan will be joining the war on the side of the Union."

Surprised murmurings filled the large room. Following the lackluster response from the RCE on the revolution in Maredith, many of politicians and officers had assumed that the war would be easily won even without major support from North Deneria. The Republic had overrun many of the Union strongholds and controlled the majority of the cities. With much of the Union's army being destroyed and the dictator missing after a failed rescue attempt by RCE paratroopers that petered out, the Union seemed to be on the brink of collapse.

"Two days ago, Flight 1939 of Kapanese Airways was hit by a SAM missile and crashed. The SAM missile was launched from a Republic air defense battery that was guarding against a possible airborne invasion from the north, similar to the one from the east. After being struck by the missile and losing an engine, Flight 1939 appears to have tried to limp to a nearby RCE airbase. From radar readings and mathematical calculations, Flight 1939 failed to make it and crashed anywhere from 50 miles to 150 miles away from the RCE airbase. Flight 1939 was an A330-300 carrying approximately 400 passengers, many of them probably Kapanese."

Concerned murmurs could be heard from the gathered group.

President Schneider motioned for silence and continued.
"Department Head of Foreign Relations Johan Friedrich will continue the briefing."

"As you all know, our recent relations will Kapan have been tense, to say the least. Previously, we had been only been a regional economic power with a very small international presence. In much more recent times however, our economy and international presence has caught up to, and then surpassed Kapan. Especially with our recent programs to revitalize our private businesses and corporations, our economy has been booming. We have become an international economic power.

Much of Kapan's economy is made up of and reliant on international trade. However, with our rise in power, much of the trade and commerce that had been going to Kapan has been redirected here. We have cheaper fees, less expensive tariffs, and a larger demographic market. To combat our growth and the shrinking of their revenues, Kapan has become friendly with our longtime rival, the RCE, another economic power. Although they are not formally allied and Kapan still has several trade and diplomatic agreements with us, relations have been hostile.

In preparation for the impending Maredith revolution, we had bribed, funded, and negotiated with several Kapanese politicians to have them keep Kapan from intervening. However, the majority of the Kapanese leadership sees North Deneria as an enemy and would use any excuse to stop a North Denerian-backed regime from taking power in Maredith. This incident is their excuse.

With the shooting down of Flight 1939, North Denerian backed politicians, no matter how prominent and influential they are, will not be able to stop Kapan from intervening, or at least displaying hostile actions."

A grim atmosphere settled over the room after Department Head Friedrich had finished speaking and had sat down.

Major General Terry Allen was the first to speak.
"So, in conclusion, we are going to be needing the Maredith Expeditionary Force. They haven't set off yet, a last minute order recalled them, for those that weren't aware, however few. The 12th Infantry Brigade and 43rd Infantry Brigade will have to be sent then, correct?"

"As always, you always find the most important things to talk about," said President Schneider. "You will be put in charge of the entirety of the Maredith Expeditionary Force. You will be temporarily pulled from your duties in the 2nd Infantry Division. Have your assistant commander take charge."

"Yes sir."

Just then, Department Head Friedrich stood up to speak again.
"We have not addressed how we are going to address this incident. Sure Kapan will most likely get involved now but what about the international community?"

President Schneider began speaking.
"I propose that we express our condolences for the deceased passenger's family and help pay reparations to them, as the Republic doesn't have the spare funds to do so. However, if the investigation by the Global Civilian Aviation Administration finds that the fault lies with the crew of Flight 1939, we will stand by the Republic's side and say that the fault does not wholly lie in the Republic. We will not however demand reparations be paid back to us or say that the entirety of the blame lies with the crew. We must not come off as callous and insulting."

A chorus of agreement rose from the gathered group.

"You have all been briefed. Expect more updates to come soon. Thank you for coming at such short notice."

The gathered group break apart as those with urgent things hurriedly left while those with more spare time lingered around and discussed related topics with one another.

March 29, 2008
The Capitol of Kapan; Seokyo, Kapan

The Prime Minister of Kapan, Chikako Ito, was having a rough time. Phone calls and emails were pouring in, and more than fifty different news agencies around the world wanted to hear what Ito says about the incident.

"No, tell Uvoan News Five that I can't talk right now," said Ito to Jiho Lee, her secretary, who was walking into her office.

"But Ma'am, you have over thirty new emails, and twenty-four other people want to talk to you right now."

"Really? Didn't I just check two minutes ago?"

"Yes, but this is an important event Ito-chan, and I recommend you get back to them as soon as possible."

"Well, I have more important things to do," said Ito. "I have to meet with Kapanese officials and decide what actions are necessary for the shootdown. Those emails and calls can wait.

"Ughh," replied a frustrated Lee. "You know this is just more work for me."

Ignoring Lee, Ito walked into the adjoining boardroom.

One hour later

The boardroom quickly became a mess of over sixty arguing Kapanese politicians and high-ranking officers.

"Well, if we don't declare war on them, they'll shoot down or destroy something else, and make a lame excuse for it!!!" angrily shouted Lieutenant General Bob Bahk into Wei Li, the governor of Aokita-do, a prefecture that houses most of Kapan's factories.

"There is no need to be that harsh," said Li, stepping back a few feet from Bahk. "If we do that, think off all the trade that will go away, and the many Kapanese citizens losing their jobs. We just have to let them go for this one, a plane strayed into their territory after all."

"Really now, Li-san?" said Amida Wan, the governor of Chibu-do, a prefecture that has a fierce soccer rivalry between Aokita-do. "What if members of your family were on the plane, hm? I know you would have acted differently then, you would be yelling for a war, not against it. Remember, there were Kapanese citizens aboard that flight. You don't want a war to start just because it will hurt only your prefecture, and their lousy citizens. Speaking of your lousy citizens, remember the game yesterday when you lost 5-0? It's because your selfish citizens, just like you, are stupid bit-."

Cutting off Wei (and stopping an argument from sparking), Ito yelled, "Calm down everyone, CALM DOWN. I'm trying to speak here."

Everyone else instantly stopped talking, and faced Ito.

"Should Kapan prepare for war on the Republic of Maredith and North Deneria?

All of the hands except one (Li Wei's hand) went up in the air.

"Why do you not want to declare war on them?" asked Ito to Wei.

"You know, the major impact on trade of course. Just think-"

"Wei-san," Mike Wu, the Secretary of the Treasury of Kapan interrupts. "We did a report just last month, and only five percent of all trade involves Maredith and North Deneria. Declaring war will not lose a significant number of Kapanese jobs."

"Oh. Uh. I was just testing you guys... I always wanted to declare war on the Union and Deneria," stuttered out Wei. "I was just testing you, yes..."

At that moment, a ding sounded on Lee's laptop.

"What is it?" asked Ito. The other people in the room looked at Lee.

"An email," replied Lee. "And it's from North Deneria."

"Well, can you read it out for us?" said Ito.

"Sure." Lee began to read the email.

"Atlantis task force do you copy." Jerry Parkers says through communications equipment at the captured air base. "Atlantis division copies Commando division." "The air base has been taken I repeat the airbase has been taken " Jerry Parkers says with a sigh of relief. "You may now may begin to sail for Meredith and begin the landings." "Got it I will tell Admiral Ronald that we are clear for operation Caged Bird also one more thing commando squad the operation to save Dragonov has been terminated he has failed the republic for the last time."

As the Colonel walks away from the equipment he see's his commandos and the Rescued Union forces. The Colonel looks at them and he see's that they are expecting orders. "Now!" Yells Colonel Jerry Parker. "We move west since the fighting is not that intense there and it will give us a chance of regroup and be in top fighting condition Now move out!" Colonel Jerry Parkers didn't know how wrong he was going to be.

To: reserved_diplomatic_address_priority@kapangov.kp.gov
From: presidential_reserved_diplomatic_priori ... ria.dn.gov

Greetings Prime Minister Chikako Ito.
I hope this message finds you in good health.

I, and everyone else in the North Denerian government, express our heartfelt condolences for the families that were tragically changed forever after Flight 1939 was shot down after it had strayed into hostile territory. We hope that this will not happen again and that no further unnecessary suffering will have to be endured by peoples of both nations.

In lieu of the shock that the family members of the casualties of Flight 1939 must have faced, we offer to help assist them in any way possible. We are planning on sending a total of $400M in reparation funds to the afflicted families as a show of support for the harmed families from this tragic incident.

To prevent such a devastating incident from reoccurring, we propose a formal zone of conflict to be drawn up around Maredith. A preliminary plan will have this official warzone be the landmass and the pre-conflict Maredith national waters with up to an additional 100 miles of expansion to create a square section around the islands of Maredith. The airspace directly above this warzone will also be considered a part of the zone of conflict.

We hope that these measures will help prevent such incidents from happening within our lifetimes through similar causes. These proposals will be brought forth at the Emergency Session of the International Civilian Aviation Board taking place in three days. I hope that we can set aside our differences to work out peaceful preventative measures.

Ally of the people, always.
-President Erich Schneider

The Capitol of Kapan; Seokyo, Kapan

"Hmm," said Jiho Lee after he read the message aloud. "It seems like North Deneria is genuinely sorry for what happened. They are also willing to pay the affected families, and draw a designated zone of conflict around Maredith to protect our country's citizens and others, too. I don't think it will be wise to declare war on North Deneria and the Republic, Ito-chan." Lee sat down.

A murmur of agreement could be heard.

"WAIT!!!" shouted Bob Bahk angrily across the room, startling everyone else present. "They shot down one of OUR planes with OUR Kapanese citizens on it. Why should we spare them from our wrath, even if they are paying the affected families? Let's show them how it feels to get THEIR plane shot down by our Air Arms." Bahk sat down with a loud thud.

"Even though I wanted a war between us and the Republic and Maredith before, I think it would be more wise to avoid it, like Lee-san said," remarked Commander Kameko Sakai. "Think about it: the compensation paid for the affected families is nice, and the zone of conflict will prevent the incident spreading to Kapanese soil without serious consequences to North Deneria and the Republic. That is all I have to say, Ito-chan."

"I think both Lee-san and Sakai-san brought up good points, but I think we should take it one step further: how about we increase the amount of personnel sent to Maredith to prepare for war?" said Minister of Defense Joseph Kim. "Just in case if the Republic or Deneria breaks their promise, we will be ready. We will also be helping the RCE on the battlefield as well."

A chorus of agreement could be clearly heard throughout the room.

"This is by far the best option!" yelled out Mike Wu enthusiastically.

"So, have we come to a consensus?" said Prime Minister Ito over the excited conversations.

"Yes, I think we have decided to prepare for war, but not declare war," said Representative of Jejoo-do, Bunta Takada.

"Okay," replied Ito. "I'll get to work writing the appropriate emails. You are all dismissed."

Ito left the boardroom to go to her office, with Lee and his laptop behind her. Most of the others hurried out of the room to go outside, as many had other things to take care of in various prefectures. However, for those who could stay, they watched Li and Wan spiritedly argue about each of their prefecture's soccer team.
