The Village of Taiyan

The Horde had kept fine order on their long ride. Most such bodies of man and horse fractured and wandered as they rode, wild, like flocks of starlings. Under most nomad chieftains, such would have been to be expected, but not under Kutuk Zhao. Years in the Imperial Commanery had taught him better than most the importance of good order in marching. He had read the four classics of war, had studied the battles of Darker ages and had talked with many of the Sun Dynasty's best standing generals, or at least corresponded with them. He was not a wild savage, not a wolf or a wild dog, but a Dragon, and he governed his force as such. As they had drawn close to the vilage of Taiyan, the horde had been instructed to keep absolutely silent.

Scouts had been sent out and the village had been looked over. The palisade would be an impediment. Kutuk Zhao would not allow himself to be bogged down in sieging a village; it was not worth the trouble. All the same, he could hardly just ride on past without sating the lust of his men for loot. Even if it was only a poor village they would have valuables. Livestock, trinkets, cloth and coin enough to tempt his men to fight further. Most important, of course, were the men and women to be taken. However poor a farmer was he was still worth plenty in a flesh-market. His captains had talked eagerly of this to him, of taking hundreds prisoner to sell off in the markets of the clans along the walls. First, though, they would have to take them.

Horsemen were not built for sieges. But perhaps they could gain entry to the little village another way. Just out of sight of Taiyan, the horde came to an orderly stop, and split into four. The scouts were sent off to gather stakes of wood, as the four wings rode in different directions, swinging round to come at the village from all sides, surrounding it in a sea of Beixia horsemen. Still, all kept silent, until all were in place, and the village was entirely encapsulated. Then, Zhao's herald, a beast of a man named Kharash, rode out before the gate of the village, bearing the Dragon's Banner. In the booming, cacophonous voice that had won him his place, the herald bellowed up to the villagers.

"You face the Black Dragon of the Beixian. You are surrounded. No messengers will reach help to save you. Send an emissary to negotiate your surrender. If you refuse, you shall face all the fury of the Dragon. Do not imagine you will be spared if you fail to surrender yourselves. As a token of my Master's sincerity, we will show you what fate awaits those who stand against him"

Without awaiting a reply, the herald rode back into the ranks, and men began to drag out the imprisoned farmhands, along with the stakes gathered by the scouts. Just out of throwing range but well within sight and hearing, the stakes were hammered into the ground and nailed together into crosses. There were perhaps only a dozen prisoners, but they would be enough. Once the prisoners stood prepared by the crosses, weeping and begging in fear, The Black Dragon rode forward, and selected the one who seemed most desperate in his pleading to be dragged up to the gate and told to call out to his friends, his family, and to convince them to submit, or else face the cross.

To illustrate his point, the other farmhands were cruxified, before the eyes of their townsfolk. Most would last days, begging day and night for an end to the torment, especially once they were told they'd be spared if the village gave in. The horde remained silent. The screaming would not be obscured. With any luck, the deaths of these would save their fellows, and indeed save the Dragon the men he'd waste on an assault. The spared prisoner would be given an hour to have his fellows open the gate, or he too would be strung up. While they waited, the army would make camp, keeping shifts to surround the village. Two days would be given, if the first attempt failed, before the assault would begin.

The Black Dragon had not won his legend without ruthlessness. The southrons had spurned him, and now they would face his vengeance. The villagers hated him, he thought. Let them hate. So long as they feared.

Action: Encircle the village, attempt to convince them to surrender, first by demand, then by the pleading of the freed prisoner, and then by the threat of the coming assault and the begging of the prisoners.

"Wen Li" emerged from the doors, just as the beautiful lady poured tea into Charles and his men cups. She bowed to the both of them then left the business to the men. Charles noted how Wen Li wore robes made of the finest silks. This man was one of the richest if not the richest man in Gaozong.

"Greetings Charles Fredrick, I have heard of your exploits and have a proposition. I have a caravan that is supposed to travel to Gaoyu, they carry many valuable goods, but as you know with the war going on, I fear my goods will be seized from bandits and vagabonds. I will pay you three hundred silver if your men protect my traders in their journey north."

Charles couldn't help but feel that something was a little off about this man. Still, three hundred silver was a lot of money and could be useful down the road for his ambitions.

This seemed far too fishy. He had to ask, "Why me? I do have black powder weapons but why me? Why not the enforcers the loaners hire to "convince" the peasantry to pay their debts?"

Village of the Sheltered Scion, Nanfai Province
Fourth Moon of Sudden Storm

High the palisade rose, here and there about the village. Patrols had kept the forests clear for now, and the peasants safe, but construction was coming along slowly - far too slowly given the needs of the crisis and the needs of Zhang Tie's sworn charges.

Saddling his horse, the Warlord rode north. His fealty to the Emperor still stood, though few men would recognize it in the wide world. It was, in truth, these days more a reflection of his unwillingness to bind his men to death on foreign soil, than any true sympathy for the rotting corpse that the Empire had become. But his seal still allow him passage into the Impenetrable City, where he sought news of any wandering bureaucrats or men without masters who might be skilled administrators.

Bu
Roll:(4)-1=3
Turn 2
Her men loot the dead patrolmen's arms and armor. Valuable loot indeed of decent quality that would fetch a good price on the markets. They even manage to grab a hold of a coin purse from the leader.150 glittering copper coins, and 5 silver coins inscribed with the Imperial insignia, wealth for a battle hard fought. Unfortunately one of Bu's men succumbs to blood loss his wounds untreated he perishes in the night, perhaps some rest or medical care would prevent such an ill fate to inflict the other injured men.

+2 Experience Points
1x decent quality Song arms and armor
+150 copper coins
+5 Silver coins
-1 Injured bandit succumbs to blood loss.

Huliluru Kutuk Zhao
Turn 1
Roll (4)-2=2
Behind the wooden walls of Taiyan, the villagers responded to the Hordes threat. At first, they cowered in fear at the might of the horde come to attack them. That would have been a boon to the war chief, but seeing their friends and loved ones crucified in such a savage manner emboldened them to fight back. Fear turned into a fighting spirit. They returned Huliuru's demand with a volley of arrows, from the walls, a message that they would fight to the death for their honor and people of this nation.

Wen Li looked puzzled."What debts? I am merely asking you to defend a caravan en route to Gaoyu".

Tang Hua
Turn 4
Roll: (5)
The decayed houses where soon being rebuilt by the hardy people of Qiaodou. Such houses where humble things no palaces or walls to rebuild but wooden huts. Due to Tang Hua's excellent bureaucratic skills, the homes are built with blinding speed, the weeds and overgrown plant life destroyed, the wild animals driven back from whence they came. The village once boasted a population of five thousand souls, it was now a shell of its former self. As such it would take lots of raw material, and wealth to rebuild the infrastructure.

Turn 2
Long and arduous is the trip from Nanfai to Zhai Cheng. Fraught with peril as well for the Sun and Song forces have fought relentlessly for supremacy of these lands. Fortunately for the warlord, no bandits or Song warriors trouble him in the journey northward. It would even be a pleasant one if not for the scars of war-torn lands, fires, and the scent of death that permeates these ancient lands. Its a long way to Zhai Cheng but the journey shall be worth it.

Bu

Despite the death of another one of her gang, they did find good loot on the bodies. Bu needed the money in order to get supplies and hire new blood in order to get a larger size and do more daring raids. However, as of now the gang needed to rest and heal up. She couldn't let more of them die of blood loss as they will be needed to fight against more Song patrols no doubt will be investigating the disappearance of the patrol. This also means that she would also have to stay her blade as the village is alerted to her presence.

First things first, she needed to rest from her battle and lick her wounds. Then she must see about finding a farm or another village away from region and see about acquiring food, men, and maybe some work.

Action:Rest up and heal from the fight.

Great Gate of Ice, Zhai Cheng
Fifth Moon of Sudden Storm

Beneath the immense walls of the Impenetrable City Zhang Tie passed, his retinue close at hand. The gates were only opened for a few hours every morning, but the lord of Nanfai was towards the head of the column, and guards bowed as he passed recognizing the garb of a prominent official.

"Scour the city. The poem-houses, the baths, the tea-gardens. A man of virtue I must find, to render service to the brave people of the south. I will pay handsomely for his services, if he is of good character and staunch mind."

Nodding, some of the Steedclad Bastion's retainers departed, to search Zhai Cheng for such a man. Near to the gate Zhang Tie found lodgings for officials journeying afar, and requisitioned quarters for the party.

The Village of Taiyun
Wrath of the Dragon

When the first arrow grazed the first horse's shoulder, the Dragon roared, frustrated and roused to rage. The fools; if they'd not decided to stake their honour bleeding his men they'd likely have lived. He could not leave without sating his honour now, and so they would all have to die or live out their lives in servitude. If they had been faced by a real wall, or by a city, he would simply have ridden away. He had no catapults, no rams. But it was not a city. It was a smattering of wooden huts surrounded by a wooden palisade. Where a stone wall, or a great rampart of packed earth would have held him off, here he had a great luxury. As much as they could fire out from behind their walls, he could fire in.

It began slowly, as the horde withdrew from the wall like a wave before a flood, and thinned itself out. Beginning in the first rank, the men began to shout, roar, bellow and sing in their throats. Alien to the men of Ying, the tongue of the Beixia rang out all around from the once silent host. Then, the thundering of hooves began. The Dragon defied untrained villagers firing over a wall to hit moving targets spread out over a plain. In a loose formation, the horde began to ride in a circle around the small village. It was the very height of a nomad's skill that Kutuk Zhao demanded when he fired his first shot over the wall, but these men had been shooting from horseback since they were children.

If the villagers wanted a duel of arrows, they would have it. The horde fired a volley, and then another, and then another over the wall and into the little village. From there, the firing grew more erratic, as each man loaded and shot as quickly as his arms could knock his arrow. Only after a few minutes of these furious shower of arrows would the Dragon's next tool come into play. Fire. Arrows, soaked in oil, pitch or resin were dipped in torchlight and set aflame, before being shot by single horsemen, still in the mass for just long enough to fire, Dozens, and then a hundred, sending a stream of fire-starters from every side. If the villagers wished to evade the volleys of thousands, they should have to hide in their huts. If they wished to put out the firest, they should have to rush out to their well. Let them choose.

It was folly for a village of hundreds to challenge a horde of thousands. He had offered them a chance, and they had refused him. They would burn for their impudence, and their corpses would hang atop his banners. The next village would not be so reticent.

Breach in the Wall

Boladjin looks over the land before him, his hair flows in the gentle breeze. At his hip he holds his helmet in his right hand, his left rests on his sword. He looks over his shoulder, 3,500 Horsemen stand behind him, a sea of horses and men. Every man is ready, his bow in hand, his spear at his side, and his sword on his hip. Boladjin takes a glance to his left, his closest friend Temujin holds a black horsehair banner. Temujin nods at Boladjin, who puts on his helmet. He takes his sword in his right hand, raises it above his head, and lowers it to his side. His horse moves forward, and the rhythmic beat of a horde on the move begins. In the distance, a man might hear the Horde nearing, and he might see the great cloud of dust, and he might see the fire that follows.

Action: Search the nearby land for settlements to raid

Bu
Turn 3
Roll:(8)

Her men rest up in the jungles. They needed to heal their wounds, or else more would die from blood loss. A good nights rest allowed Bu's men to recover from their injuries, and they were soon ready to follow her command. Flies gathered on the corpses of the patrolmen and bandits, and the smell of death permeates the air. Sounds could be heard from the jungle men on the move. It was up to Bu to chart the next course of action to flee the men marching to their position or interact with them.

Five injured Bandits recovered

Zhang Tie
Turn 3
Roll:(5)

Zhang's retinue scours the city in search of a bureaucrat or engineer to serve the people of Nanfai. They traveled from the Lower Ring District a sea of houses tightly clustered together with the stench of poverty permeating the air to the wealthy Middle Ring District home to Yaolu Academy. Luck would have it that they would find an official who had just graduated from Yaolu Academy. Cao Li, a fresh bureaucrat who proved his wisdom as an official in the exams, would happily serve under Zhang Tie, for the price of 100 silver coins, or 1,000 copper peices a steep price but worth it in the end.

Wooden Palisade: (3/10 Labor)

The Dragon
Turn 3
Roll:(4)+1=5
Battle of Taiyan

It was a grim day for the people of Taiyan one that would decide the faith of rather they would survive or not. A small village of one thousand men, women, and children they understood that losing would mean the end of them. Every able body man took up arms to defend their families from the host come to terrorize them. They were farmers but they were prepared to die defending the land of their ancestors. They shouted back expletives and cursed the horsemen that they would die in agony for all the crimes they had committed.

The Dragon prepared for battle. His force was massive, his men trained since childhood, to ride and shoot on horseback. Three thousand five hundred nomadic warriors versus one thousand farmers the odds where cleary on his favor. The skies blackened, bloating out the sun itself as men shot volley after volley of arrows onto the village. Men in their hundreds died. Some of the Dragons men died as well the villagers getting their revenge, soon Taiyan burned.

The farmers desperately tried to put out the fires. Men carried buckets of water to douse the flames but to no avail. The fires spread like a wrathful spirit consuming all in its path. The villagers screamed in agony as they burned to death, a grim and terrible faith. By days end the Horde had claimed victory and they rode over the dead bodies of their enemies.

Taiyan was a husk of its former self, the charred remains of a once prosperous village lost to the ashes of time. Most of the villagers died in the assault around three souls remained they tried to flee escaping to the forests and mountains. The Black Dragon was victorious in his first true raid, and the wealth of Taiyan was free to be seized.

700 Villagers slain.
300 Villagers flee to the mountains and forests
200 Horsemen slain
300 Horsemen injured

Boladjin
Roll: (3)
Turn 1

The horde under Boladjin's command searches nearby lands to raid. Without a sense of direction, they travel is misguided. Soon they find themselves north of the breach further from Ying then when they started! His men grow restless and irritated at the time wasted.

The Breach

To say Boladjin was angry was an understatement. He thought the Horde under his command could easily find a village to raid or at least a small hamlet to butcher. Nonetheless, he vowed to continue onwards. However, he dismounted his horse on the top of a hill. Standing there, he asks Temujin to come to his side. Taking a quick glance over the horizon, he spots the wall once again, and the breach they intended to ride through. He turns to Temujin, "My friend, I have a decision to make. Ride east or west and unite more tribes under my command, or ride south, and take what is ours." Temujin thinks for a moment, taking a deep breath before he responds, "My Chief, I believe it best we gather our forces, the Ying dare not venture north of the wall, and the breach will take years to repair. Ride east to the sea, and when we reach it with our grand host, turn back and enter the breach once again" Boladjin smiles and nods, he walks back to his horse and mounts it again, Temujin doing the same. With a motion of his sword, and the raising of the horsehair banner, the Horde follows him east.

Action: Ride east, in search of tribes or clans to fight or unite with.

The Ruin of Taiyan
The Scourging of Taiyan

The Dragon's men had lost too much. The men of Taiyan, or at least the one's still left, would not get off so lightly as to starve or freeze to death in the wilds. The horde would have its payment in full, and to the letter. As the wounded and a thousand others stayed behind to glory in the ruin, pick over the ashes and build up a decent camp to tend to their wounded fellows, the remainder fanned out over the countryside, towards the forests and mountains in columns of two hundred. The Dragon issued just one order before he himself left on the hunt;

"Take the rats alive."

Then, it began. Three hundred men on foot could not very well escape two and a half thousand on horseback. When the horsemen found them, they would bind them in rope and string them over their horse's backs. Three hundred slaves could be of use, and certainly would make a profit. With any luck, the chase would allow the horsemen to follow the fleeing men long enough to spot whatever little villages they had been running too. 1000 coins and three hundred slaves were a valuable prize, but this was far from the end of the raid. The Dragon's men had tasted blood, and Kutuk Zhao would have them taste gold before they returned home. He would not have them telling their brothers, their clans, that he had been an ungenerous warchief. He had plans, and he would need more than three thousand men to see them realized.

For now, though, a further three-hundred in chains would serve him well enough.

Action: Have the injured looked after in a camp somewhere defensible near Taiyan while the rest of the men and the Dragon hunt down the three-hundred fleeing villagers to capture them as slaves and see where they try to run to.

Seige of Gaoyu
The Sun Dynasty forces march eastward the boots of tens of thousands of troops shaking the earth a mighty force indeed. They march to Gaoyu with the stronghold town of Jingaun seized back from the Southern Dynasty they are now able to take the great city back under the rule of the Emperor. The task will be hard but seizing Gaoyu will decide the faith of the war. If the Sun Dynasty is victorious in this seize then they will be able to march southward.

The Emperor sends an edict to all lords loyal to the Sun Dynasty to send troops to help seize the city of Gaoyu. It will not be an easy task but those who comply will be richly awarded with wealth and privileges. Those who don't comply will be harshly punished disobedience would not be tolerated.

Horde Losses

Faith would have it that the Zhao Dynasty would score another victory against the horde. Zhao Zan lured the horde troops into a trap. The strategist would leave a treasure trove of alcohol and riches to lure the horsemen to their doom. The hordesmen quickly seized on the bounty and drunk their fill. Drunk on rice beer they were no longer at peak performance. Zhao's troops ambushed them from the countryside thousands of horsemen were slaughtered and hundreds fled westward a glorious victory for the northern dynasty. The Horde is weakened for now, and the Zhao Dynasty is stronger.

The Great Ying Empire

Boladjin

Five hundred strong warriors ready to serve a new lord they swell the ranks of Boladjins horde, and now his nomadic army is stronger than before.

500 nomadic horsemen joins Boladjins Horde.

The Dragon
Turn 4
Roll: (6)
Hard his nomadic troops ride to capture the fools who would dare try to escape them. His horsemen gallop catching up to most of the villagers. They seize upon them prisoners a rich bounty. By themselves, the farmers were worth little but in their hundreds, they would fetch a fine price on the slave markets. Fifty of the villagers manage to escape, deep in the mountains, and the horsemen are unable to capture them.

Bu
Turn 4

A new acolyte, a retainer for Zhang Tie's company. His wage was well-paid, and would be earned soon enough, no doubt. Other news came though to the Lord of Nanfai as he awaited developments in his lodging - the Emperor was marshaling his vassals for war, and had dispatched errand riders to draw in the warriors of his many feudal lords. It was a moment of decision.

In many ways, the Emperor was trying to get blood from a stone. There were few yet who still held to the oaths long ago sworn, and though the Emperor was massing all those men - still it would be a dangerous thing to commit to such a desperate cause. And yet, oaths were not to be lightly discarded, though many held them as a thing of little value in the present time. Zhang Tie, the Steelclad Bastion, was not one of those men.

With his purpose accomplished, it was perhaps time to seek the fruition of one further task here in the capitol. As a loyal retainer of the Immortal Emperor of Ying, there were certain privileges also allowed. And so it was that, in a short time, Zhang Tie was admitted to the Court of the Scarlet Rose, where those of his station could seek an audience with the Councilors of the Emperor. Hours later, Zhang Tie bowed low, for Julai Nandol, the Scribe-Master, deigned to see him.

"Honored master. I come to speak of oaths fulfilled. Nanfai shall honor our oaths, and march to war with the Ever-Victorious Army. I also merely wish to request a humble boon of the most wise court - in this commitment to the needs of the Emperor above those of my people, those same people will be left vulnerable to the brigands and warlords who yet trouble the Emperor's servants. Thus it is my humble request that a small boon be allocated to Nanfai, to construct walls for the defense of his subjects, and perhaps a military commander of the Imperial Army be attached to my retinue so those of my personal guard who will remain to defend my charges may be prepared for any eventuality as best as is practicable."

Action: Affirm the loyalty of Nanfai to the Emperor, and ask some small boons to allow for the protection of Nanfai while the army is deployed.

The Waste of Taiyan
The Second Hunt

Kutuk Zhao had two hundred and fifty slaves, a thousand coins and an army fully prepared for another raid. The gods were being kind, recognizing his strength and resolve. He would sacrifice a bull when he returned home. For now, though, work remained. The weather on the plains had settled, and the slaves had fallen quickly into order when they were shown the ashes of their homes. They would not soon stirr, and if they did they'd be slaughtered to a man. The Horde began to ride, slaves strapped over horses backs to avoid slowing the host, in search of the next village.

It likely wouldn't be hard to find a new source of quarry. With luck survivors from Taiyan would have spread his legend, and villages would cease to be so foolish as to stop him, but if not at least he could rely on his men to perform well. With the gods of storm and loot on his side he could expect perhaps two or three more raids before he'd march back up north, find a market back in the Beixian, sell his slaves and take on new blood. For now, though, only the next village mattered, and so his men would find it for him.

When they did, he would be more careful this time. He would not give them time to recoil, to steel themselves. He would ride the whole host in one roaring, trumpetting and bellowing chorus up to their gates and demand submission. If they did not know yet, they would know soon, what came to those who defied him. All Ying would, and the madman emperor would kowtow at the hooves of his horse or see if his silken robe and holy raiment could stop arrows.

Action: Search for another village in full force and demand tribute.

Bu

For the first time in months she saw forests again but they were far from any settlement. She had to get the gang out of the wilderness and find some work and a mark.

Actions: scout for any settlements east of them.

Time to Strike

Boladjin stands proudly before his horde. They are camping for the night and have begun to set up their tents and fires. He takes a moment to take in the sight, a smile coming to his face. His friend and 2IC stands beside him, Temujin. They both share a short glance and a smile and then walk down to join their men. Once morning comes the fires are put out, the tents packed up again, and the horde is once again on the move. Boladjin sits on a hill, his horse picking at the grass. He grabs the reigns and gives a soft kick, several more put the horse to a gallop and he is soon at the front of the horde. He once again orders the black Horsehair banner raised, and as before he raises his sword and in a swift motion brings it down. Now is not the time for confederation or uniting, now is the time for war.

Action: Travel west in search for villages and towns, but also on the look for any caravans on the road.

Zhang Tie
Roll: (3)
Turn 4

In the court of the Scarlet Rose, Lord Zhang Tie asks for a boon from the Emperor. The emperor is ill and unable to see the feudal lord. He instead speaks to a representative of the Son of Heaven. His requests fall on deaf ears, they tell him that he has plenty of time to bolster the defenses of his province before the siege and that the emperor asks but for a token force to aid in the siege of Gaoyu. He is then dismissed from the court for the officials have other business to attend to.

In Nanfai, far south of the Imperial City progress on the wooden palisade picks up speed. Bureaucrat Cao Li is able to increase efficiency greatly, and soon the wall is nearly complete.

Wooden Palisade: Labor (4/5)
-100 Silver Coins paid to Cao Li

The Dragon
Roll: (1)
Turn 5

The horde travels to search for more villages to attack. Through the northern lands the Dragon and his horsemen travel yet he loses a sense of direction and travels in a circle. Many days pass before he realizes this and his men grow agitated at the lost time from this wasteful maneuvering. Back in the camp in Taiyan scouts send reports that a massive host marches to the smoldering ruins of this once prosperous village. The banners belong to the Zhao Dynasty. Details are spotty it is not known if this host is larger than his own. A victory against the Zhao would bring many rewards, wealth and renown but defeat would mean certain death, the Ying showed no mercy to those they believed to be barbarians.

Bu
Roll (5)
Turn 5

Bu and her men travel eastward in search of civilization. Sweeping forests transform into boggy swamps They soon stumble upon the village of Sunyong taking note of the wooden huts that stood on silts in the middle of the wetlands. A poor village, isolated from the rest of the empire it is scantily defended, it's people poor but hale. Fishermen haul bountiful amounts of silverfish from the waters the lifeblood of their living. A small market place stands in the center of the wooden silts, where swamp traders sold their wares a pitiful display compared to larger cities. Her men complain about being stuck in this mosquito-infested swamp and wish to leave as soon as possible.

Tang Hua
Turn 5
Roll: (2)

Terror befalls the people of Qiaodou! The same barbarians that troubled them before have attacked again! They rain arrows on the poorly defended village and trample over the newly reconstructed fields. Villagers under lord Li Yu tried to mount a defense but it is was for naught, and they are defeated. Lord Li Yu pays the hordesmen in coin and slaves to sate their appetite to leave them alone. Tang Hua's bureaucratic progress takes a hit.

-1 Farms destroyed!
-1 Houses burned!
100 Villagers enslaved by Barbarians!

Boladjin
Roll: (5)
Turn 3

His four thousand strong horde rides west. They reach a town guarded by stone walls surrounding it are fields of bursting wheat. The stone walls are great, skilled Ying masonry, wide enough that many men could walk bestride. This was no mere village but a bustling settlement home to multitudes of people. The town is alerted by the hordes presence, and the fields are empty, farmhands safe within the stone walls. Taking this town would bring wealth beyond imagination.

Ripe for the taking

As Boladjin rode towards this settlement, he was immensely happy. Of course, the stone walls made for quite the obstacle, however, Boladjin had heard of the warfare of the Ying and he knew what to do. As the peasants had abandoned their fields, he ordered 500 of his men to begin collecting any of the crops they abandoned. Furthermore, he ordered another 500 to begin demolishing houses and salvaging the wood in order to use for making structures. For this, he ordered 2,980 of his men to completely surround the settlement, near enough to be within bow shot, but also far enough that they were not in danger of being attacked by a sortie. Every man was given a few planks of wood, which he is ordered to stick into the ground facing towards the settlement, making a makeshift shield for firing arrows from. Any extra is kept for the later construction of ladders. 40 men are ordered further away from the settlement with their horses, to scout for any supporting armies or any messengers attempting to get a request for help out. 10 go north, 10 south, 10 west, and 10 east. On the roads, men are stationed to stop and arrest anyone attempting to enter the settlement.

Action: Take the abandoned crops, demolish the houses for wood, use the wood to make shields for archers (of which the entire horde is), send 40 men in each direction to act as scouts, set up checkpoints on the roads - basically prepare for a siege.

The Wilds of Tai
The Flight

A full Zhao host was a fair step above the handful of ornery villagers the host had yet clashed with. The Zhao were a cut above the usual Ying hosts that had chased nomads for decades. They were far more practiced in hunting down the men of the steppe, and Beixia had fallen foul of their spears before. Less sensible chieftains had wasted hundreds of men and horses charging blindly into the spears of their foe, and Kutuk Zhao did not intend to repeat the mistake. He had commanded such armies before, and he knew perfectly well how to irritate, harrass and tire out his foe before going in for the kill.

The Zhao were far from home, far from reinforcement and in steppe terrain perfectly suited for horsemen rather than infantry. Likely, they were relying on fragile supply lines or on a baggage train, and yet more than likely that they were slowed by supplies, infantrymen and camp followers. With caution, they would make fine quarry, even if they outnumbered the nomad host. The hunt could begin in earnest.

The hunt would start, as all do, with the hunter spotting his quarry. Before they could begin to bleed the prey, they would need to know whether they were faced with an elk, a wolf or a rabbit. The Dragon's host would have to be broken down into smaller detachments, and the scouting would begin. Bands of 250 men would fan out across the countryside, dividing into even smaller squads of two dozen, communicating by riders, until they could spot the Zhao. When the foe was found, the small band of men who'd spotted it would spread out across the network, bolting away before the Zhao could respond to them and spreading word of the enemy's location to the entire army.

Once the Zhao had been found, the army would reorient itself. Keeping split into small bands acting discretely for now and keeping scrupulously out of any combat except against individual foraging parties or scouts, it was to follow the Ying army at a safe distance. Messengers were to be intercepted, if they could be, but the Dragon's forces were to keep carefully out of the reach of their quarry. Once the size, speed and composition of the army had been scouted out, then the Dragon could make his next move.

Action: Disperse the host across the countryside and scout out the Zhao host at a dstance, counting its size and composition but avoiding any contact with the main host. Only messengers, outriders and foragers straying too far from the host are to be killed or captured, and men are to travel in groups no larger than one or two dozen (in order that if they're detected they'll just seem like a wandering hunting party). Otherwise, scout out the Zhao and see what we're up against.
