Misheard lyrics?

Postby Petrolheadia » Fri Apr 26, 2019 9:59 am

Ever listened to a song and heard lyrics that weren't the real ones, but your hearing would bet that they were real? Well, this is the thread for sharing them.

Recently I was listening to However Much I Booze by The Who, and heard "I see myself on TV, I'm a baker", and wondered why Pete Townshend would call himself a baker.
He didn't, the real lyrics are "I see myself on TV, I'm a faker".

Another one was hearing "My dad beat me on the latter day" in No More Mister Nice Guy by Alice Cooper. I thought it was the singer trying to reason his weirdness by mentioning domestic violence, but the real lyrics are "My dog bit me on the leg today".

And what are your misheard lyrics?
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.
Nazism, edgism, dogmatic statements, most of Abrahamic-derived morality (esp. as law), welfare for those not in need.
We are not Albania and I am not Albanian, FFS!
Male, gearhead, classic rock fan, gamer, agnostic.
Not sure if left-libertarian, ex-libertarian or without a damn clue.
Where you can talk about cars!
"They're always saying I'm a Capitalist pig. I suppose I am, but, ah...it ah...it's good for my drumming, I think." - Keith Moon,
If a Porsche owner treats it like a bicycle, he's a gentleman. And if he prays to it, he's simply a moron. - Jan Nowicki.

“Rock the Casbah” by The Clash, to me, is the best example. I used to think they were saying rocking the cash bar instead of Casbah. I also misheard the lyrics for “Linger” by The Cranberries for the longest time. Ditto with BTS’s “Fake Love”, I thought they were saying Now you’re so mad when in reality it was Love you so mad.

When I listen to Meniń Qazaqstanym, I do have a misheard version since some of the words in Kazakh sound somewhat like English: Meniń elim, meniń elim in particular sounds like "near an angry bear, near an angry bear," and I know there are a few other examples but I can't really remember them exactly.

I find it funnier with foreign language songs. An example being ‘Moskau’.

I love that song. I understand it perfectly, but then again I am English :p

It is easy to get the words wrong when one has listened to it for some time, and then forgot about it for some time. Of course, computers and the internet (despite the latter’s flaws in social media) makes remembering the song and lyrics easier.

"Don't be afraid to catch fish.”Feels by Calvin Harris (ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean).

I tell you, this damn song was made to be largely unintelligible but frighteningly catchy.
Peter Kropotkin wrote, “We accustom ourselves and our children to hypocrisy, to the practice of a double-faced morality. And since the brain is ill at ease among lies, we cheat ourselves with sophistry. Hypocrisy and sophistry become the second nature of the civilized man. But a society cannot live thus; it must return to truth or cease to exist.” The Conquest of Bread (1892)

I used to think Björk sang "Chairman Mao" on "The Modern Things" from her album Post when she was in fact singing "Telur međ", as well as "Kemur međ" later near the end of the song. Both phrases are in Icelandic.

From Taylor Swift's Blank Space:
"Got a long list Starbucks lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane."
which is actually "Got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane."

Some of my classmates misheard that line too.

As I Lay Dying - "Beyond Our Suffering".

"When I look to myself..." I heard that as "Ooh La La, Temasek!"

This is especially funny considering that it was a metal genre song.

"I'm Alright," by Kenny Loggins. It goes something like;

"I'm alright, don't nobody worry 'bout me."

When my mom and I would sing along, we'd both incorrectly sing "Ham on Rye, Don't Nobody Worry 'Bout me."

My dad thought it was so hysterical that he never corrected us. You can imagine my shock when I was watching Caddyshack with some buddies, and was singing "Ham on Rye" when that song came on towards the end credits. I'll never live it down.

I don't know what the song is but I hear it on people's radios and it sounds like:

"Oooo ooo I'm a rebel with a kickstand..."
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Pff. Rebel with a kickstand is so much better. Just for trying to figure out what that would mean.
