Are School Dress Codes too Restrictive?

Postby Andsed » Thu Apr 18, 2019 1:58 pm

So after reading things like this:

https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/teens-protesting-high-school-dress-code-fight-for-right-to-go-braless-wear-shorter-shorts

About students protesting dress codes for being to restrictive I decided this would be a good NSG topic and here we are. So to my fellow residents of NSG what are y,all thoughts on school dress codes?

Personally I feel like dress codes can sometimes be way to restrictive. I mean there is some logic to them. Preventing students from say walking around totally nude or wearing offensive shit like a swastika is sensible. But some of them banning stuff like short shorts is just nonsensical to me because I mean who does someone wearing short shorts hurt?

But that is just my feelings on the subject and I am interested in hearing what the rest of you have to say.

well in some places dress codes are meant to restrict the type of clothing to lessen distractions in the classroom to focus more on studies. also in some ways it helps reduce bullying helps form unity as a student body. the only people that have problems with the dress codes are the ones who would violate them just to say "see they are being discriminatory towards me" when in reality it is the student who is discriminating against the school policy just so they wont get in trouble.

It's too.

And no, it's a dress code. They're not hard to abide by.

It's been more than a year, any update on how The Yellow Squares are doing?
I can only speak from a British perspective in the meanwhile, where defined school uniforms are the norm, mostly below sixth form in this day and age - that's "high school" if you're in Cabotia. The general expectations are well defined and have been for several decades: polo top (or - especially nowadays - a shirt, blazer and tie) on top, skirts (for girls) or trousers (unisex; was for boys only until ~25yrs ago) on bottom, and smart black shoes. There have been some successful movements to get shorts explicitly legalised as a unisex option for the summer term (NOT related to the Yellow Squares), but the effects of these campaigns have not been felt everywhere.

Beyond the shorts campaigners (EDIT: See Autonomous Cleaner Bot Cleaners' post below), very few seem to have any problem with that or with separately-defined PE kit; certainly nobody was wailing about the manifestation of rape culture in uniform back when I went to school in the 1980s. The biggest problem appears to be with people not wearing blazers - or, alternatively, deciding to wear trainers to school - both of which are rarely widespread and little to make a fuss about.

Back in the distant past when I was attending school we had a uniform. The dress code was pretty much just "Wear your uniform".

I had a dress code in High School where we had to wear solid colored polo shirts and khakis. Didn't like it at first, but eh, after a while you got used to it.

Yes, and they shouldn't be a thing. Schools should let students wear what the fuck they want unless it's exposes a student too much. (Think crop tops or shirtless guys walking around the school)

They should talk to the boys about being respectful instead of restricting the girls.

The private school (which are apparently known as "public schools" in the UK, while what us Americans call "public schools", the Brits call "state schools"; the English language can be weird sometimes) that I've attended for my high school years has a rather strict dress code, and I don't mind it, if I'm to be completely honest.

ideological framework of the Singaporean People's Action Party | "New Deal"-style societal regimentation | Kantian/Mohist/Stoic philosophy

...presumably can dress themselves. But it's actually more complicated than that, of course. At least in the United States (which is where my perspective is informed), while it's generally accepted that schools can establish standards that promote the learning environment (and thus ban, for example, lewd, sexually explicit, or gang-related attire), schools must ensure that their policies do not infringe on students' normal Constitutional rights. Inevitably, some clown in administration is going to try to extend a policy about school "unity" to try and ban burkas, or crosses, or traditional/indigenous/cultural dress, or rosaries, or non-US flags, or US flags, or...

Dunno how they necessarily do things in Quebec, but it seems reasonable to me, at least, that school policies cannot infringe on basic human rights like free speech and expression. The courts have to figure out where that line is, and adjust (probably constantly) as necessary, but the idea that the "only people" who have problems with dress codes are the ones interested in being disruptive is -- well, its patent nonsense.

EDIT: Did some googling, and found that -- again in the US, where I am -- school dress codes have implications for parents' Fourteenth Amendment rights as well. We can convert that to a more generalized claim that parents have the right to raise their children as they wish, including authorizing their childrens' manner of dress.

I'm desperately trying to fathom what "discriminating against the school policy" could possibly mean, but my nose is starting to bleed, so I'd best stop. :?

Why inform and educate, when you could punish and condemn instead?

There shouldn’t really be too much of a dress code though anti-gang makes sense. I never paid it much mind though.
But as someone who participated in job corps a few years ago for the hell of it, dress code really should allow skirts. Pants only is sexist, and implies only pants are “professional”.

The sexist dress code policy is the "skirts OK, shorts NOT OK"

via The Guardian

When they protested that the girls were allowed bare legs, the school – no doubt joking – said the boys were free to wear skirts too if they chose. So on Wednesday, a handful braved the giggles and did so. The scale of the rebellion increased on Thurday, when at least 30 boys opted for the attire.

*Teaches in a school with a uniform*
I'm for dress codes. To a point. Mostly, I'm for dress codes in schools because too many times I've heard fellow teachers stateside who had to scrub a science experiment because someone thought that short-shorts were perfectly fine for a lab when working with chemicals. Or flip-flops make great track shoes for PE.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

I went to private schools that required uniforms. This is not something that ever really came up, protests in dress codes. You used your uniform and that was it.

I understand problems with practicality like lab

But for women it’s often a matter of restricting them because they show too much skin

And this must be destroyed
