What would your personal utopia be like?

Postby Ghost Land » Tue Apr 16, 2019 4:53 pm

Lots of people have put forth their own visions of a utopian society over the years, often based on their own preferred religious or political ideology. Some have imagined socialist utopias where people are given everything they need and want; others have imagined free-market and anarchist utopias where the government wouldn't tell them what to do. Regardless, one person's utopia is bound to be another person's dystopian craphole, and if we were to take the definition of "utopia" to mean somewhere where everyone agrees with each other about everything and everyone just magically has everything they want and need, it would be quite boring and quickly become dystopia.

My personal utopia would be a country-sized society of hard-working, independent, kind, and fun-loving people under a libertarian government ruled by a benevolent dictator, who is accountable to the people and grants virtually maximal civil and economic freedoms. Education and healthcare would be excellent, the geography and ecosystems would be varied, and the climate of the country would be warm most of the time, with constant progress being made to continue improving conditions for all. Computer technology and popular music, however, would be tastefully stuck in the 1980s. A full description of my utopia can be found in this factbook.

So, what say ye, NSG? Is my utopia similar to yours, or is mine more of a complete dystopia to you? What would your personal utopia be like?

I was thinking of this the other day, what with all this talk about surrounding oneself with things that "spark joy." I would be surrounded by bottles of booze, card tables and gaming machines. Pretty much I'd live in a casino.

"I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well."

Ancapistan with tea, frito pie, and a low population density per square mile in almost every area except for a few token cities and industrial centers. Or at least the U.S. before 1913. As for yours, it seems nice and I probably wouldn't mind at least being there, but give anyone absolute power and it's inevitable it gets abused given enough time.

A world without disease, poverty, hunger, homelessness, war, discrimination, greed, pollution. All societies would be democratic, with regular elections and no political corruption. People would truly take the golden rule to heart and be kind to others. Everyone would have access to education and would have the opportunity to succeed. Workers would be treated fairly by their employers.

Oh, and we would have space colonies, FTL travel, and the United Federation of Planets.

I appreciate the kind words :), and as for absolute power corrupting, that's a very valid concern. However, as mentioned in the dispatch, the benevolent dictator would still remain accountable to the people (hence "benevolent") as they can kick him out if he gets too corrupt, and he would use frequent referendums to gauge public opinion on any issues that come up.

Sounds like it could get quite boring quite fast if those kinds of things Literally Did Not Exist. I'm also not sold on the idea of democracy, though that's a different topic for a different thread. Would your utopia also have lots of really hot girls, just like mine? :D

The world with better economy, literacy at <99%, no animal or child or any form of abuse, different cultures and languages don't try to edge each other out, and Palestine and Israel go 5 minutes without attacking each other and actually try to find a reasonable solution. The PRC willingly transfers control to the ROC, and things don't fall apart for once when stuff like that happens. Finally, my snake isn't hostile every attempted hold. Unrealistic no doubt, but utopia does mean "no-place".
