Should Alcohol be Illegal?

Postby Abaja » Sat Mar 23, 2019 10:17 pm

In the 1820's and 1830's, temperance societies in the United States began to grow common. These societies saw alcohol as a destructive force to families and marriages. (Source: https://www.history.com/topics/roaring- ... rohibition) People around still think like this today. Due to recurring drunk-driving accidents, diseases caused by over-drinking, and surprising rates of underage drinking in areas like the U.S., quite a few people in society think that alcohol should be illegal. They compare it to any other type of bad drug. (http://whisper.sh/stories/d3f74076-055d ... -Be-Banned)

Can alcohol ruin families? Yes. Can it ruin a person? Definitely. However, these consequences are typically caused by too much alcohol use. When used in moderation, there are potential health benefits. Alcohol can lower the chance of developing diabetes, lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and a few others. I'm sure some would feel the removal of alcohol to be unfair - a freedom that has been stolen from them.

I don't drink alcoholic beverages and I don't plan to (it just tastes nasty to me), but what are your thoughts? Should alcohol be illegal? Also, how would society be effected by it?

Criminalizing alcohol will result in a boom in organized crime. Let's not go through that again.

We already tried this. It didn't work so well, with the whole organized crime thing.

Didn't you guys already go through that once? Put a sock on it and let people fucking drink what the fuck they want lmao.
(And no. Imo, any political movement that supports any form of prohibition of alcoholic beverages shouldn't be allowed to run for any political office.)

The United States and as well as some European countries such as Finland have tried this. It didn't work out and thanks to banning alcohol Los Zetas grew big.

No, we already had this problem a century ago with prohibition, I'd much prefer we not go back to that time ever again.

For a lot of people it tastes nasty the first time you try it, but it kind of grows on you as you get older. Also depends on the specific beverage. I love Irish cream, but could take or leave most beers.

Should alcohol be illegal? Also, how would society be effected by it?

Prohibition didn't work out well last time we tried it. Let's not do it again. I want my Irish cream.

Even though my religion band me from drinking, I'm torn on banning alcohol outright or letting it be. Sure it makes a lot of money but I can see the dangers of getting drunk and all

No. It not only didn't work before, it made things worse. Also I am not aware of a lot of people wanting to ban alcohol in the US.

Ideally, yes - but that would be far too idealistic

It's already been tried before, and woefully failed - not sure if we need it again

It is an affront to liberty that a person can be locked up for consuming a substance. If a person is not sovereign over one's own body, that person is not free.

We need to move past prohibition of drugs, not ban more of them.

I would prefer some other method of preventing drunk driving. Maybe needing to pass breathalyzer to start a car? Hmm seem rather intrusive.

If breathalyzers were attached to every single car, that would raise the price of the car, which means the vast majority of people who don't drive drunk have to literally pay for drunk drivers' behavior.
