Pax Gothica - Regional Capital of Gholgoth! [Open]

Pax District, Pax Gothica

In Dreadfire Square, thousands of diplomats, government staff, and workers had gathered for the opening ceremony of Pax Gothica. While everyone had a reason to be proud this day, the workers were feeling particularly thrilled with what the media was calling “Opening Day.”

The regional capital and her outlying districts had been completed in a just over two years thanks to an army of construction workers and an armada of printer ships. The capital city wasn’t completely finished of course. There were plenty of empty parcels of land still waiting for buildings to fill them. The official buildings - the Gothic Hall, the Trade Building, Praetorium and other administrative offices - were finished and decorated in banners from every Gothic nation. The other buildings that were standing had a sturdy, but unfinished look to them. The air smelled of sawdust and fresh asphalt.

Castellan Evelyn Burnham was the star of the show and she had made sure that the construction workers that had worked so hard to make this day happen got a front row seat. As Castellan, she had been in charge of the effort to build the city at the behest of the Gothic Lords. It had been a gargantuan undertaking. Each Gothic nation would have its own district plus four embassy districts to be utilized by those outside the region and district just for the air and seaport. At the center of all this - and in the exact geographical center of the region - would be the central district of Pax which would house the capitol building...Gothic Hall. Gothic Hall would be permanently staffed with ambassadors from every nation working together to solve whatever crisis unfolded before them. Even now, Alliance military forces were meeting together to discuss the current state of war against the Slaver Empire and the effort to liberate the Pudite island chain of Shen Almaru.

Burnham was in a Gothic Red power suit and held the Castellan's Mace in her hand as she rose to the podium to speak. Joining her on stage were a number of important people including several Gothic Lords and almost all the Ambassadors to the Gothic Council. There were to be many speeches made this day, but as Castellan she would get the first.

She rose the Mace above her head to call for silence. The Mace resembled the Crimson Oak with branches engraved with the names of every Gothic nation. As the crowd fell silent, she placed the Mace in its holster.

“My Lords… my fellow Goths… steelworkers, masons, welders, and carpenters. I bid you welcome to Pax Gothica!”

Cheers erupted from the crowd for a moment.

“I won’t speak long, but I want to do two things. The first, is to thank each and every one of you for your work to build this great city. This day is history. You built this history. Years from now - generations from now - when they talk about what happened in this place you can tell your children and grandchildren that you built it. Thank you for service to the region. Truely, thank you.”

Several of the Gothic Lords stood to applaud the workers. Media cameras zoomed in on several men who were still holding onto their sledgehammers and wearing their construction helmets.

“There are many people who look to this region and our violent history and say that we are irredeemable. Let them come to Pax Gothica. There are some who say that in these uncertain times that only the language of violence can achieve great things - that peace and diplomacy are only tools of the weak and the slow. Let them come to Pax Gothica.

The peace process has many difficulties and the reforms are not perfect, but never before have so many nations put in so much effort to build what we have built here today. I know of no town, no city, that has been as ambitious as this one, and carries with it the hope and the determination of the Region of Gholgoth!

To the world at large, we open our city gates unto you! Use this opportunity to start dialogue, establish embassies, open up trade, and come to celebrate our new era of peace.

Let them come to Pax Gothica!”

Welcome to Pax Gothica! This thread is open to anyone wishing to RP with the nations of Gholgoth in a more peaceful setting. In particular, this thread is great for anyone who might be new to the game or wants to do dip their toe into Gothic waters.

This thread takes place in Gholgoth’s regional capital of Pax Gothica. Each Gothic Lord has their own district, a shared airport and deep sea port, as well as a single ‘Capital’ district of Pax. There are four embassy districts that are open for nations outside the region to establish their embassies. There’s a visitor’s guide below in case you get lost.

This thread *is* different so please keep these guidelines in mind.

- This thread happens asynchronously - which means that posts can be out of chronological order. While the thread will start with “Opening Day” we will also be posting stories about how Pax Gothica was built years back. That also means you have some flexibility when you post. You can post a self-contained story and not interrupt things too much.

- This thread is pretty open and flexible - feel free to post your characters exploring the city, your nation asking for an embassy or trade relations, secret meetings, it’s wide open. This is also a good thread for spies since there are a lot of governments and diplomats here.

- While this thread is open, if you are rude you will be asked to leave.

Some IC Rules that your characters should follow

- There are a fair amount of regulations here, but only one real law. All who enter Pax Gothica will keep the peace. The city is heavily guarded and people who make trouble will be expelled unceremoniously.

- There are very few people who are allowed to carry weapons in this city and all of them have official roles within the region or are Custodians (the local police force). Getting caught with a weapon here in Pax will get you locked up or worse. Those entering the city are warned that Shedding blood in this city is a very very bad idea.

- Each Gothic Lord’s District is considered national territory of that nation under those laws. (Havensky’s Republic City district is under the laws of Havensky. Kraven’s Norksa district is under their law, ect ect)

- If you have questions or want to chat - our Discord is here: https://discord.gg/TGxcuaQ

= We also have an OCC thread here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=461448

A Visitors Guide to Pax Gothica - Pax District

Postby Havensky » Fri Mar 15, 2019 7:20 pm

A Visitor’s Guide to Pax Gothica

Pax Gothica is the administrative capital of the region of Gholgoh. It is located in the center of the region and is open to visitors from both inside and outside the region.

Pax Gothica was founded after the Gothic Reforms which moved the administrative capital from ULE City in Automagfreek to an unclaimed island chain. ULE City is still considered the official spiritual captain and is restricted to Goths only.

Pax contains many opportunities for visitors to learn more about the history of the region as well as for national governments to establish trade and diplomatic relations with nations across Gholgoth.

Getting there:

By Air:
Pax International Airport is the sole airport for the city and can get you to the center of any district in under 15 minutes. Pax serves all major airlines within Gholgoth. Currently, there are no airlines that serve airports outside the region - so you will need to make a connecting flight through one of the Gothic capitals.

By Sea:
There is a large port that allows civilian ships to dock with several nations running regular shipping cruises to and from the city. Please note that all civilian ships are subject to search upon entry.

Cartography:
Pax Gothica is composed of a chain of islands in the shape of flower petals
Each member of the Gothic Council is granted a ‘petal island’ that are considered that nation's territory - usually referred to as the National District. (Kraven District, Dephire District, Ect) These districts are for all intents and purposes giant embassy districts.
- Mixed in between these islands are Embassy Districts that contain embassies from nations outside the region
- Each district is connected by a high speed rail line / with VIP cars available
- The Port District is the furthermost district with an airport and seaport facilities
- The Pax District is at the center of this chain and the location of the main regional capital

Governance and Administration:
Pax Gothic is administered by the Castellan of Pax Gothica under the direction of the Gothic Council. This position is elected by the Gothic Council and serves a four year term.
- The current Castellan is Edalynn Burnham of Havensky.
- This is equivalent of a city manager; this position is non-political in nature mostly concerned with the nuts and bolts of running the city
- This position reports to the Gothic Council; the governing body of the Gothic Regional Alliance
- There is a Pax City Council comprised of one representative from residents of each district; this council advises the Castellan’s office on needs of each district.
- Nations outside the region seeking to establish an embassy in Pax Gothica can write to the Castellan’s office for approval and to make arrangements.

Safety & Security
In theory; Pax Gothica’s membership of every Gothic nation makes for a significant deterrent since attacking the city would be an act of war against every other nation in the region. However, Pax Gothica does have its own joint military base to defend against military threats and many of the national districts keep a garrison for protection.

Violent crime in Pax Gothica is extremely rare due to various layers of security required to gain entry into each district. However, visitors are encouraged to keep an eye on their belongings to avoid pickpockets and to avoid scams.

Police duties are performed by the Order of Pax Custodes - informally referred to as Custodians. This civil protection organization is comprised of police and security officers from all member nations. Members of the Pax Custodes report directly to the Castellan. There is no court system in Pax, but rather the Castellan makes judgements on those arrested based on the Commandant’s recommendation. In most cases, expulsion from the city is the most common remedy for troublemakers.

For serious crimes, suspects are extradited to the victim’s nation or whichever arrangement that is made between the two involved nations. In the event that a disagreement occurs around what should happen to a suspect; the Castellan's nation will try and prosecute the defendant.

The First and Only General Order for the Pax Custodes is to Keep The Peace. In practice, this means breaking up trouble prior to things getting out of hand rather than being focused on arrests. Custodians are expected to be polite to all visitors and can often be seen helping to guide lost tourists. Within the national districts; the respective nation is responsible for security although each nation can opt to integrate their police service with the Custodians.

A Gothic passport will gain you entry to the to main embassy districts and Pax Gothica District; but the national districts have their own passport controls Weapons of any kind are restricted to Custodians, Praetors, and personal security details of the Gothic Lords.

Pax Gothica District:
This is the main district of capital containing Gothic Hall, which serves as the regional Capitol Building, Castellan Office, Praetorium, Regional Trade Office and the Hall of Heroes.
These buildings are centered around a center square with a large park. In the center of this park is a large statue of the region’s founder Lord Dreadfire
The buildings here are Gothic Style cathedrals - these buildings are typically very large and intimidating to the eye.

Gothic Hall

Gothic Hall serves as the Regional Capitol building with offices for each Gothic Lord, Gothic Council Ambassador, the Chamber of the Gothic Lords, At the ground floor of the main hall stands the statues of the original founders of the region. Each statue stands about five stories tall almost extending to the height of the hall.

Image

Praetorium
The Praetorium is the main headquartered building for the Praetor Order containing the Armory, Advanced Training Facilities, Gym, and Administration officers. The facility contains extensive private quarters for visiting Praetors and their guests. The Praetorium is off limits to the public, but private tours can be arranged at the direction of a Praetor.

Hall of Heroes

Image

The Hall of Heroes is a museum dedicated to those who have fallen in battle within the region regardless of what side. Shrines to the original Dreadfire can be found here as well as war memorials dedicated to those who have fallen in the regions many wars. This is free and open to the public.

Regional Trade Office
The Regional Trade Office is a building complex that houses several national trade offices. This makes it fairly easy for trade representatives outside the region to meet with several different nations in a relative short time.

Castellan Office
The Castellan Office holds the offices of the Castellan as well as all administrative offices of the city. This is also where the city council meets and residents can conduct various business. The Office has a visitors center that is open to the public and where people can ask questions about the city.

Promenade

Image

Just south of Dreadfire Square, the Promenade is a large urban area featuring various restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, and gift shops. At the far end of the Promenade, visitors and residents can find Custodian HQ, Pax Hospital, and the Pax Gothica School.

The Promenade also is home to the famous Drunken Apostrophe Tavern.

Visitor's Guide to Ascension District

The fourth of Milenka’s federal districts and home of several multinational offices from nations with origins all over Gholgoth, Ascension is a renowned hub for commerce, technological and financial development. With a wide array of services, landscapes and activities for all demographics, Ascension can truly be a life changing experience.

It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the public transit maps and routes to major locations, so that your daily experience of discovery doesn’t become overwhelming with so many things to explore.
Ascension is a welcoming global city, with various cultures and nationalities forming the 1,186,914 inhabitants of the district. It is one of the safest districts in Pax Gothica, with a vast network of public transportation systems for your comfort.

Other than its business appeal, Ascension offers one of the world’s most beautiful beaches and waterfronts, with many resorts to your choosing. Major events are also held in the district, with a large Stadium for sports events, the luxurious Diana Theater, the autodrome and its large yearly music festival. Many hotels and resorts are located in Ascension, and are all well integrated with both the international airport in Pax and the district’s port.

Winter Palace

The Imperial Winter Palace serves as both the temporary residence of the Royal Family when visiting Ascension as well as hosting many of the interregional embassies of Milenka. Under normal circumstances, it also serves as the official government building for the Federal Governor of Ascension.

As well as the building itself, the complex features a large public garden and park that is open to the public in its outer sector and a large museum of art featuring part of the imperial collection, also open to the public.

Diana Avenue

The main artery of financial decision making in Ascension, this avenue alone houses many multinational headquarters and offices. It is the most expensive thoroughfare in Milenka, as well as being considered one of the most elegant. Complementing the skyscrapers, a host of parks, monuments and fountains are all distributed along the avenue, making it a must see for anyone visiting Ascension, whether or not it is for business purposes.

Imperial Park

The largest green area in ascension is an extension of the palace gardens, spanning from the front of the Palace’s garden to the Federal university. It is a public area, with a reverse zoo inside, lakes, rivers and monuments. It is one of the most visited landmarks in ascension, and is a rather pleasant experience for romantic couples.

The Waterfront

More formally a combination of two neighborhoods, the area in Ascension known as the Waterfront is among the most expensive square meters in the world. As well as luxury residences and five star resorts, the area is dominated by a pleasant view of the district’s inner bay, facing the Pax district, and a network of canals. The Waterfront is famous for its nightlife, with never ending parties, world famous restaurants and nightclubs. The waterfront is the pinnacle of Milenka’s cosmopolitan worldview, with people from all over Gholgoth gathering in it.

Federal University of Ascension

The Federal University of Ascension is a public university, located in the opposing side of the park in front of the Winter Palace. It is among the most sought after universities in Milenka. Tuition is covered through taxes for citizens in Milenka, with non citizens having to pay tuition if approved. Admission to the university is handled through a mixed system of the national exam, a local exam following the national exam and interviews. Many students from abroad also partake in interchange programs.

Unity District (Anagonia)

The Unity District, unofficially recognized as the “Confederate District”, is home to the economic, political, military, and civilian establishments that make up the Anagonian contribution to Pax Gothica. It is difficult to tell where Anagonian governmental interests begin and where civilian interests end, but to new arrivals it would appear that the entire district was a show on economic prowess through cultural means. Littering the district are the various and unique businesses representing the sovereign interests of their home state, along with businesses coming from Anagonias closest two neighboring nations, Drekamythia and Nodea Rudav. This representation extends to the embassies within the district, which represent not only the individual sovereign states that make up the Confederate States of Anagonia and the primary government itself, but also the two independent nations of Drekamythia and Nodea Rudav which are closely tied to the nation of Anagonia as a whole.

A Visitors Guide to the Unity District: An Explanation
To fully appreciate the and understand the confusion that may arise from the layout of the Unity District, the Office of Confederate Tourism in Anagonia has authorized an official “Visitors Guide” to inter-regional and extra-regional tourists. It is hoped that with this new guide, future visitations will result in enjoyment for the visitor, rather than confusion and irritation as has been previously expressed to our embassy establishment.

Visitors Guide to: The Unity District
One of the most prominent concerns among new arrivals is a lack of comprehension to the culture exhibited within the Unity District. Many visitors complain of the lack of patriotism to the Confederacy, or the lack of what appears to be some sort of “central authority”. To fully appreciate this unique culture, the Office of Confederate Tourism has offered this brief explanation.

1. The central confederate authority is not like a federal authority, instead it exists to defend the nation from internal and external threats and represent the interests of member-states. It is not a centralized federal entity.
2. Many of the business that you will visit will display patriotic flags or slogans of their home state. This is natural. Many states still see themselves as independent sovereign entities and it is the citizens right to support this belief.
3. Don’t be afraid of the Confederate Military Police! We understand that in some other districts, having any form of military personnel approach you is likely trouble. Not so here in Anagonia! The Military Police exist as the protectors and defenders of our citizens, so please, don’t be afraid to chat and take the offered help!
4. Our embassies not only represent the central governing authority of the Confederacy, but also the governing authority of its member-states. Please remember that if you have an issue with a citizen of Anagonia, speak to the citizens home-state representatives in our embassy first instead of the Confederate representatives. (honestly, we’re required to ask the state diplomatic representative, so you’re saving us the work)
5. The two sovereign and independent nations of Nodea Rudav and Drekamythia exist in mutual cooperation with the Confederacy, and have been a part of our borders since before Anagonia had established a Confederate government. Our economic, social, and military ties are deep and we would consider it against those ties to not allow their citizens to represent their interests in our district. We hope this clears any future confusion up on that topic.

If there are any further questions that confuse you on your visit to the Unity District, please do not hesitate to ask the nearest Confederate Military Policeman or inquire at the nearest embassy.

Composition of the Unity District
The Unity District is comprised of various sectors, all with their individual purpose and intent. While the Confederacy is more liberal in the aspect of allowing its citizens and representative citizens construct businesses where they please, there is still an underlying makeup to the construction of establishments. At present, the Unity District is comprised of five sectors.

--The Liberty Sector
The Liberty Sector is comprised mainly of businesses and food establishments representing the various interests and tastes of the Confederate member-states and her two outlying partner nations. All of the establishments follow international protocol established under the authority of the World Assembly to better accommodate tourism and trade.
--The Confederate Sector
The Confederate Sector houses the homes and barracks of Confederate Military Policemen stationed within the Unity District. Tourists and Visitors will be encouraged to check in at the main guard office before being allowing a tour.
--The Arkansis Sector
Much like the member-state of its namesake, the Arkansis Sector is comprised almost entirely of parks, hotels, and recreational facilities to enable tourists and visitors a place to relax and unwind. Please remember that while there are recreational facilities catering to adults, they still follow World Assembly guidelines. Treat your hosts with respect.
--The Dragon Sector
The Dragon Sector is the primary area of residence for all national citizens of the Confederate States, its member-states, and two outlying partner nations. There are a few hospitals and other establishments catered to the specific needs of citizens here, where tourism is generally discouraged.
--The Red Star Sector
The Red Star Sector is comprised almost entirely of hospitals, health facilities, general wellness facilities, and other establishments whose responsibility it is to ensure the health and safety of citizens and tourists within the Unity District. Confederate Memorial Hospital is the primary staple of health facilities that exist in this sector.

A message from the 16th President of the Confederate States, Franklin Johnson
“I would like to personally thank you for reviewing this informative pamphlet provided to all tourists to Unity District. It is one of my greatest honors to oversee and help further the diplomatic program here. Gholgoth is comprised of many, many unique nations with their own forms of government and culture. I encourage you, dear reader, that after you’ve had your fill of our wonderful Confederate hospitality that you will explore the other districts in Pax Gothica. There’s just so much wonderful things for you to see and experience! And remember, you’re always welcomed back here in the Unity District!”

..Ravennii, Capital of the Xeraphian Empire.

The emperor sat on the wide ledge outside his private office, gnawing on a leg of lamb. Spitting out a bit of gristle, he heard the chime on his desk indicating that his attention was required. He quietly said, "Enter", and the massive oaken door swung in silently.

Jhane, his personal secretary, stood a respectful ten feet from the emperor. "Sire, some of the Princes have sent a message concerning Pax Gothica."

He answered without looking in her direction. "Gothica? Dreadfire's people?"

Jhane nodded. "Apparently, Gholgoth is opening up it's regional capitol to the world. Lots of rules and laws as one would expect of Gholgoth, but surprising nonetheless."

Amalric Tan'it, Xeraphus Rex, stretched, a grin showing on his face. "And which of my family want to go?"

"Sire, Prince Teii, Prince Ricala, Prince Sethanis, Prince Vyossae, Abbot-Prince Merton, Princess Lilith, and Duchess Chantal have signed the missive."

"How about Dr. Emmet? I'd imagine he'd be more than a bit curious about the Goths." Jhane made a note and stood waiting.

"I admit I'm a little curious myself. As far as I know, Gholgoth and Mercenary Lands have had virtually no contact with each other for centuries. There was a time when we had military alliances with some of those nations before they were added to the Gothic Empire. But that was long ago." He gazed out the window, taking in the expanse of Ravennii.

At length he said, "Very well. Inform the family that we will go and see this Pax Gothica. I don't want hundreds of our people going. Allow each Prince, Princess and Duchess just five attendants. I don't want to innundate the Goths on our first visit." As Jhane took the notes, he continued.

"Have our people do a thorough investigation of all Gothica laws and customs. We will follow all protocol without exception. I think flying into Pax Gothica would be best. With an escort of three Rattlesnakes, of course."

"Sire, they have strict rules about weaponry. None, of any kind, are permitted."

He raised an eyebrow. "Not even our ceremonial swords? Unusual, even for them."

"Well, Sire, we could say that the Rattlesnakes will not land at their airport, but ask if the Pax Gothica airspace would be open for escort purposes."

He nodded. "Okay, not really a problem. I'm sure with their reputation we will not be in any danger."

"And when would you like to go, Sire?"

"I think, if it is alright with the Goths, that thirty days from today would be acceptable. Arrange it, Jhane."

Jhane nodded and before she turned to go, she gave the Emperor a wink. "And I'll be seeing you later this evening"?

Amalric grinned. "Bring a couple of bottles of wine from the reserve cellar. And don't be late!"

Holy Fortress, Velstrania, Varathron

The beating heart of the original Fortress Kingdom stood like an insult to the land around it; rivalling the worlds mightiest citadels for both its utilitarianism and ugliness. The huge structure, surrounded as it was by the White-clad guardians of Velstrania and their installations stood to tell the world that even in Varathron, just as a stones throw from the troubles of its mightier neighbour, one nation still stood: ready and willing to both defend itself and those ho wished to be free. Its power and its right to strike at the Tyrant came from Velstur: God himself, and its rulers were his avatar on Earth...even if the many false foreign Gods still claimed existance. Velstrania would not fight these false-speakers or attempt to silence them as some in Gholgoth might: they were allowed to say precisely what they wished; nothing you said could ever serve as a pretext to bring the wrath of the guardians on your head.

Oorjin sat purched atop a window seat in the rather modest palace that formed part of the innards of the fortress and smiled as he read the reports. It was good, very good; the economy...booming, military numbers...rising, foreign relations peaceful and proper, aside of course from the fact that some of those who would, officially, be classified as his overlords were coming to visit.

Ronan and Alyana entered the room as Velstrania's holy Mazhrit rose from his seat, towering over the both of them; he approached the Havenic leaders with his usual portence and asked in his soft, questing voice "Shall we be off?" The two nodded, and exited the room...representatives of the truly free peoples were on their way to Paxgothica.

((more to come in a future post.))

Yukari Alagon welcomes you

Postby Havensky » Wed Mar 20, 2019 5:48 pm

Xeraph wrote:~ snip ~

The royal delegation received a response from the Castellan’s office almost immediately stating that they would be welcome in Pax Gothica. They were allowed an fighter escort into Pax Gothica’s airport, but given that Pax Gothica was in the center of the region they’d also have a courtesy escort by Skyan Accipiter Fighters while they were in Gothic airspace. The pilots had also been granted shore leave while they were landed.

If the delegation looked down, they could see the formation of the artificial islands. Each island mimicked flower petals with the largest center island in the center of the formation. As they started to land, the buildings of each district peeked up above the ocean waves.

After they landed, they were greeted on the tarmac by the Skyan Ambassador to the Gothic Council Yukari Alagon as Havensky has hosting duties this round. Yukari was a tall woman with bring sky blue hair that she wore down contrasting with her dark red empire dress. She was flanked by four Skyan White Guards who wore stark white power armor with golden winged lions on their shields standing rampant. To Yukari’s left, there were six Custodians of Pax Gothica. The Custodians were the police and security force for the city comprised of almost every Gothic nation. The Custodians were wearing dark navy blue long coats with fluorescent yellow trim. They were obviously more civilian, but still were quite imposing as the shortest one was still six feet tall. There were no weapons allowed by outsiders in the city, but the Castellean had offered the use of these six officers as an armed guard as they were so many high ranking members of their government here.

To Yukari’s right, there were four more White Guards carrying the flags of Gholgoth, Pax Gothica, Havensky, and Xeraph respectively. The flag of Gholgoth was dark red with the black cobra head of the Gothic Hydra at its center. Pax Gothica’s half white and red flag stood next to it contrasting sharply with the Skyan blue flag. Standing just in front of the guards was a girl of about twelve standing holding a basket of bread and an attendant who held tray of wine glasses.

Yukari smiled at the delegation as the girl offered each guest a roll of bread.

“On behalf of the Gothic Lords of Gholgoth, I bid you welcome to Pax Gothica!”

The Xeraphian delegation stood clustered casually, observing the protocol of the Gothic greeting. The males were all dressed the same, garbed in the black leather uniform of the common Xeraphian soldier. The uniform was overlaid with a fine mesh chainmail tunic that hung to their belts, their dark brown hair hanging to their waist. The men wore chin-beards, bluish-grey eyes taking in the scene.

The women, Princess Lilith of Ssyn and Duchess Chantal of Elyria-Lorain, each wore the purple gown of their rank, jewels glittering at waist and arms, silver and gold threads winding through their hair, ear and nose piercings evident. All wore on their wrists the royal purple birthmark of the Tan'its.

Emperor Amalric walked slowly forward, accepting the breadroll with a smile. He wore an iron band on his head, the ancient symbol of the Imperial House of Tanith, set with a single magnificent ruby. "We thank you all for the graciousness of your welcome. We look forward to seeing your magnificent city. May I introduce my family?"

Turning to the entourage, he said, "I present Prince Teii of Vhammpyr, Prince Vlad of The Grey Phoenix, Prince Ricala of Auralinia, Prince Sethanis of Black Shadows, Prince Vyossae of the Black Katanas, Abbot-Prince Mencius Merton of the White-Robed Monks, Dr. Emmet Tan'it of Terra Civitas, Princess Lilith Tan'it of Ssyn, and Duchess Chantal Tan'it of Elyria-Lorain." He eyed the Custodians, then continued. "We would normally travel with our Shadow Guard and Red Centurions. But I am aware of Gholgoth's legendary efficiency concerning security procedures, so I am at ease with your people."

"I trust that we will be meeting your various officials over the next few days? I think we have much to talk about."

Angel District / Urba Gothica (Kylarnatia) - A Guide

The Kylarnatian District, officially named Urba Gothica although commonly referred to by locals, visitors and neighbouring districts as “Angel District”, acts not only as the centre of the Imperium Antiquum’s diplomatic and trade relations with Gholgoth, but also represents what has often been referred to as “Kylarnatia in miniature”, giving outsiders the chance to experience Kylarnatian culture and customs with less of the culture shock that can arise from visiting the mainland for the first time.

Having been awarded the status of Urba by Caesar Silvier Catherina Silvanus IV on completion of the district, Angel District is considered a semi-autonomous city within the Imperium Antiquum. This means that it has its own “constitution” and assembly, elected by the residents who hold either an Imperium or Gothic Passport, and can pass its own local laws (so long as they do not contradict / override existing Imperium law). Caesar is represented by Pro Consul Consentia Petasia - who gives assent to local laws in accordance with Caesar’s wishes and represents the broader will of the Imperial Senate, as well as acting Imperator in times of conflict - and the Assembly is represented by a Magistratus who will be elected in upcoming elections, who can propose legislation and oversees domestic affairs at the head of the executive, supported by their own cabinet officials as well as the Archpriestess Vesnia Venator and Legatus Dux Kyle Lucius Jordanus.

The security of the Urba is maintained by the Caesar’s Imperial Armed Forces and Emergency Services, in conjunction with friendly Gothic forces and the Pax Custodes.

Angel District was planned extensively to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Affluent citizens reside in small arcologies integrated within large and open green spaces, contrasting with the clean, monumental and Neo-Imperial architecture of the District Forum and Symposia. Artificial canals and riverways run throughout the district in homage to the Seraphis River. Main roads run across from Pax Gothica proper to Angel (with smaller ancillary roads connecting the Forum, arcologies and major transport, commercial and defence hubs), though their use is restricted to Emergency Services and Defence Personnel, public transport vehicles and specially licensed vehicles. The main modes of transportation are via train, electric shuttle bus or by boat.

District Forum
The centre of Angel District, the District Forum is the seat of the local government. One of the few completely urbanised areas of Angel District, with many buildings showing a unique blend of both Neo-Imperial and Gothic styles, the District Forum is where residents and visitors can find the Populi Aula, where elected members of the District's Assembly meet to discuss domestic matters and legislation. Also located within the Forum in quite close proximity to each other are the Pro Consul's Residence, the Imperium Antiquum Embassy to the Gothic Council, and the Gothus Basilica, which serves as one of the most important places of worship for followers of the Silvier Sacerdotium across Pax Gothica. Central to the Forum is Silvier's Needle, the popular name for an one-hundred and seventy foot tall obelisk which commemorates the founding of the District.

Popular with tourists and businesspeople alike, the District Forum is designed to be easily traversable by foot or by cycle, though public shuttles also operate here. Foreign dignitaries and envoys also visit the District Forum to visit the local offices of the various Imperium Ministry's - particularly Foreign & Imperial Affairs and Trade -in order to formally establish relations and conduct business in a more immediate manner.

The Symposia
Situated by the main riverway, the Symposia is a hub of culture and learning for all of Pax Gothica. Architecturally designed in a much more traditionally Kylarnatian style, the Symposia features predominantly Neo-Imperial architecture with some more contemporary designs. Here, residents and visitors can find the Urba Gothica Museum of the Scientific and Natural World along with a multitude of other museums and art galleries such as the Hall of the Genetrix; then there's the Bibliotheca Gholgothica, a massive library and digital archive which features works and historical pieces from across the region (though with a particularly large section dedicated to the Imperium itself, so as to educate outsiders). There are also a multitude of theatres and music halls for a variety of artistic performances.

Living up to it's name, it also has locations designed for the free exchange of ideas. The Symposia Conference Hall is a much more contemporary building where academics and world leaders can host conferences and meetings, and there is also a city campus for Caesar's University - based from Caesaropolis in the mainland - where both domestic and foreign students can study for degrees awarded at the same level. The campus also offers the opportunity for foreign students in particular to spend a semester at the university's main campus in the mainland, offering them extra credit for taking the opportunity to learn more about the Kylarnatian way of life, often being housed with a local family.

Palaestra
Situated near the waterfront, Palaestra is perhaps the most contemporary part of the District in terms of it's architecture and is the home of multiple stadiums and sports venues, playing host to local, Imperial and Regional competition. Popular amongst the domestic Kylarnatian populace are combat sports which are hosted within the Palaestra Gladiatorial Arena, where all-comers can take part in both lethal and non-lethal forms of competition. Also popular are games such as Rugby, Football and Basketball, which are played on a seasonal basis. Local Olympic and Paralympic-style games are held every five years, deliberately coinciding with the celebrations of Caesar's Ascension Jubilees, and as such are held in her honour.

Motor sports are also quite popular, with the Gothica Hippodrome sporting a multitude of tracks for the use of various motor sports including Rallies, Formula One and MotoGP.

Caesar Silvier Grand Park and Gardens
With its own dedicated green space, the Caesar Silvier Grand Park and Gardens was commissioned to honour the Caesar by paying homage to her love for all things horticulture and nature. Multiple biomes contain plants and fauna from all across Gholgoth, while the many connected parks and gardens are designed to reflect the diverse and rich environment of Kylarnatia, with lush oasis and jungles of the south contrasting with the more mountainous and tundra-like environments of the north. Quite popular with tourists, there are also a number of camping and lodging sites spread across the various parks and reserves, and many affluent citizens and foreigners come here for their yearly breaks.

Pax Necropolis
Situated on the west-side of the District and inaccessible to the general public, the Pax Necropolis is a specially sanctioned necropolis of the Silvier Sacerdotium, blessed and sanctioned by both the Caesar herself and the Sisters of Moriterpe, a special sect of the Sacerdotium Vestals who prepare and care for the Blessed Dead, allowing for their kin to venerate them and to maintain the Mortuary Cult. To be buried here one must be a recognised follower of the Sacerdotium and have performed the rites required to receive mummification and purification upon death. While it can be admired from afar and many tour boats do like to pass by to capture the imagination of visiting dignitaries and tourists alike, there are strict penalties for trying to enter the Necropolis without official sanction to do so (often only granted to relatives of the deceased or on sacred days of the year).

Silvier of Gothica
Built on its own purpose-built island just off the coast of Angel District, Silvier of Gothica (sometimes referred to as the ‘Colossus of Gothica’ or ‘Mother of Gholgoth’) is a colossal statue depicting the Grand Mother (though those unaccustomed to Kylarnatian tradition often confuse the likeness with Caesar Silvier) seated on a Gothic-style throne, a sword planted firmly to the ground in one hand and the Sacred Flame - the gift of fire which was given by the then angel Silvier to mankind to free them from the will of the Old Gods - in another, outstretched in the direction of the Imperium heartland. The statue (from base to top) stands at just over two-hundred feet tall, and is made of copper and plated to appear golden. Visitors can learn more about the Grand Mother and the history of her symbology throughout Gholgoth in a dedicated museum at the base of the statue, and there are lifts that can take visitors up three-quarters of the statue, where there is a viewing point from her shoulder where they can see the entire Pax Gothica skyline.

Emperor Amalric walked slowly forward, accepting the breadroll with a smile. He wore an iron band on his head, the ancient symbol of the Imperial House of Tanith, set with a single magnificent ruby. "I trust that we will be meeting your various officials over the next few days? I think we have much to talk about."

..15 minutes later...

The Emperor paced, somewhat nervously. Though the room was more than adequate for their comfort, Amalric was perturbed that none from the Gothican government had come forth to direct the Xeraphian contingent to the appropriate lodgings.

"What the fuck is the hold-up, Jhane? I'm not one to wait for some flunky to take us to the head of government."

Jhane, though equally perturbed, whispered, " Sire, you have to recall that these Goths think and act differently than we do. They evidently do not place a high regard on Imperial position. Our aristocratic members are not accustomed to waiting for much of anything, never mind recognition of presence."

"Barbaric, no? It is a mark of less-than-civilized countries to make Imperial higher-ups wait for meetings of their war-lords. Apparently, tribal traditions hold sway. They just don't give a flying fuck about their superiors."

"Perhaps, Sire. But we can't project our national norms upon other countries. They are what they are. We have to accept their ways."

Amalric sighed. "Very well. Perhaps these orange plastic chairs will do for the moment. Tis a regretable situation to be sure. I sometimes wonder about these Goths. After all, they came from fur-clad sub-humans who lived in yurts. I mean.....really!'

Prince Teii, ruler of Vhammpyr, was not one to be trifled with. In the scant, gravely voice the Vhammpyrians were noted for, said, "I for one wish to depart this obvious snub, Sire. These assholes do not seem to want to grant us access to their best and brightest. Fuck 'em. Let's get back to our lands. We have several rebellions to put down. And my Warriors are getting hungry." Vhammpyrian Warriors were mythic figures in Mercenary Lands. Fully eight feet in height, heavily muscled, they were objects of nightmares.

Tall, grey-skinned, filthy matted hair hanging to their thighs, they were the ghouls of children's tales. Vertical slits of serpent pupils, open holes where greenish matter oozed from their face. Grey mottled skin, a scant loin-cloth as gartb, they were the epitome of horror. Broad swords matched with automatic weapons made them all but indestructable.

Amalric hung his head. "Yes, barbarians, perhaps. Impolite in all probability. Remember that the Gholgothans have been legendary warriors. We need to be smart and shrewd when dealing with them. We may be....strange....but they are an unknown as per the way they think and act. If it takes cooling our heels, then so be it. We have much to learn and gain, and an equal amount to ignore and lose. Always remember Lord Dreadfire. He had a mighty grasp of authority. Respect it....and him."

Night and Day

Postby Kylarnatia » Sun Mar 31, 2019 12:53 pm

The District Forum, Angel District
Pax Gothica, Gholgoth

Even before the sun had dawned that morning, the air was already heavy with anticipation and excitement for the festivities ahead. To the millions of Kylarnatians who two years ago had accepted the call to make the dream of Pax Gothica into a reality, the day was particularly significant: a recognition of their efforts and sacrifice, their day of glory and one through which they received the highly-coveted promise of immortality in the collective memory of the Imperium Antiquum by being declared heroes, punching their ticket to becoming a member of the Blessed Dead in the afterlife. It was never an easy choice for a Kylarnatian to leave the ancient and sacred homeland of their people, but they never wavered from their strong sense of tradition - seeing themselves as standard-bearers for a way of life which had sustained them for millennia - even on the fringes of the wider world, which they thought riddled with the fluctuating energies of Order and Chaos. Pax Gothica presented an ample opportunity to carry this standard forward with the Kylarnatian's own district, which would come to be known as "Angel District" due the cultural significance of angelic figures to Kylarnatia, acting as a vanguard being in such close proximity to their Gothic counterparts but also in a very intentionally-designed open destination to outside groups.

The District Forum at the heart was a perfect example of the Kylarnatian tradition; a carefully planned urban sprawl on the east side of the main artificial river that ran through the district in which both the political and religious spheres perfectly intersected, being both artistically and ritually expressed in both monumental structures and lived spaces. Sunlight danced off the domed roof of the Populi Aula, an Assembly designed for local representatives to meet and discuss domestic issues, and embossed within its walls were images of Imperium statesmen and women of old, represented as seraphim - the spirits of the Blessed Dead - though still going about their stately business as they did in life. Just a stones-throw from that you had the Gothus Basilica, a grand temple of the Silvier Sacerdotium faith, with tall spires piercing the sky and large stain-glass windows along the walls of the hypostyle hall showing images of the Grand Mother and the Archseraphim, the columns within decorated with reliefs of priestesses and followers of the faith attending to the many rituals and practices of the faith. Parallel to the two of them across from the vast open space of the square there were the various ancillary offices of the Imperium's many Departments of State which formed part of the all-encompassing Imperial Bureaucracy, as well as the Imperium Antiquum Embassy to the Gothic Council. Then further beyond that there was the palatial residence of the Pro Consul, who acted for the most-part as a physical stand-in for Caesar and as their eyes and ears.

Due to the large-scale celebration going on and the high concentration of very important persons in one space, security around the District Forum was especially tight. Squads of the Caesar's Vigilum, wearing the colours of and operating in conjunction with the Pax Custodes, lined all the routes leading in and out of the Forum and stood at the barriers that controlled the thronging crowds. Checkpoints at every entry and exit were entrusted to Legionnaires of the Caesar's Imperial Army, who came from the small yet well-supplied garrison that had been stationed to defend the newest addition to the Imperium's growing sphere. The security of most of the VIPs and high-security locations such as the Populi Aula and Gothus Basilica were also entrusted to Caesar's Legion. At the centre of the District Forum a stage had been erected in front of a one-hundred and seventy foot tall obelisk known as Silvier's Needle. Made almost entirely of obsidian topped by a golden pyramidion, it was erected within a large decagon-shaped fountain basin at each corner of which there were statues representing the Ten Sons, canonically believed to be the sons of the Grand Mother and the most powerful of the Archseraphim, who were the Aspects of the fundamental elements of the universe. On each of the four faces of the obelisks plinth, brightly coloured fresco's displayed clear profile views of the Caesar, her figure much grander and visible than those of others in each scene. Each represented her in a different way, each important to her role: as a Commander at the head of her vast armies vanquishing the enemy, as a Stateswoman giving instruction to her subordinates, as a Philosopher engaging in symposia and commanding great knowledge, and finally as Mother giving life and guidance to the souls of her people and caregiver to the world both natural and civil. The entire obelisk was laden in inscriptions of High Seraphic - the glyphic language of the Sacerdotium, and used only in ritual contexts - and while not all of it was visible, one part clearly was, and was translated into Common at the base for all to read:

BY THE IMMORTAL GRACE AND BEATIFIC GLORY OF HER IMPERIAL MAJESTY SILVIER CATHERINA SILVANUS, FOURTH OF HER NAME, CAESAR OF THE IMPERIUM ANTIQUUM AND ALL HER PEOPLE, SUPREME COMMANDER OF ALL HER IMPERIAL ARMED FORCES, PONTIFEX MAXIMUS OF THE SILVIER SACERDOTIUM, LORD OF GHOLGOTH AND WARDEN OF THE NORTH; ASTRA PUELLA, HIGH QUEEN OF KRYTOPIA, ARCHPRIESTESS OF THE MATER BASILICA, CHAMPION OF HELIOS, SCION OF MINERVA, MATRIARCH-APPARENT OF THE SILVANUS, FOREMOST OF HER FOREBEARS, MASTER OF THE GREAT SERAPHIS, GUARDIAN OF THE SACRED AND BLESSED NECROPOLI, MATRON OF THE DAUGHTERS OF MORITERPE, RESPLENDENT AS THE DAWN, CHOSEN OF AVARIS, ASPECT OF ORDER, SCOURGE OF CHAOS, WARDEN OF THE SACRED FLAME, VANQUISHER OF GODS, TRIUMPHATOR, MOTHER TO ALL HUMANITY...

and so it went on, and on, and on.

The crowds continued to grow in large numbers showing a diverse range of groups. Upon the roofs or balconies of nearby buildings, the richer and generally more orthodox circles gathered wearing very traditional robes and dresses, the more elderly matriarchs of the families that attended wearing hooded shawls dyed in the family colours and wearing very expensive gold and diamond jewellery, some also opting for polished stones of lapis lazuli inlaid into metal bands or necklaces. Veterans of the Caesar's Imperial Armed Forces wore their ceremonial uniforms and armour, the sunlight reflecting off of the plates making them look like sparkling lights from a distance. In the mass of people below, the mix was far more diverse, with a mix of suits, casual attire, half or even fully naked individuals who had painted their skin in various bright pigments of blue, green and red. There was singing and dancing, with buskers in the crowd playing a mix of both traditional flutes, drums and lyres and then more contemporary guitars, keyboards and brass. The mood was extremely energetic and almost chaotic, but it was jovial and being well-maintained by the large amount of security present.

Large screens erected both on stage and around the basin showed images of the crowd but also of events happening across Pax Gothica, eliciting cheers from the crowd whenever something recognisable appeared on screen, which was most of the time: the celebrations also going on in Dreadfire Square, the arrival of the various Gothic Lords for the day's events, other images of the Kylarnatian district such as the colossal statue known as Silvier of Gothica, or of sweeping shots of the green spaces and the artificial river and waterways that spread throughout it. There were also flybys of the sizeable contingent of Caesar's Imperial Navy vessels that were both taking part in the festivities or had been assigned to patrol the waters of Pax Gothica. One unmissable ship that was there for the day's events was the CINV Avaris, a Dreadfire-class Superdreadnought that acted as the Caesar's own command vessel and was the flagship of the Imperial Navy. On-deck the entire ship's crew had gathered, standing to attention in their dress uniform all along the deck and on the several platforms around the titanic vessel, and the same was true of all the other ships that had gathered, saluting as the colours were raised.

Back in the District Forum, the sound of trumpets rang out from the spires of the Basilica and the crowd immediately turned their attention to the square, as the screens also began to shift their focus there. The noise of the thronging crowds quickly died down as from the tallest spire, a Vestal of the Sacerdotium began to sing the first 'Call to Prayer', prompting nearly all of those present to bow their heads in silence until she finished. The call was carried out across the entire district by megaphones, so that the crowds also gathered in other prominent parts of the district joined in. The prayer was likely audible to the nearest neighbouring districts, and it was something they would continue to hear on a weekly basis from that point on. The ritual caught the attention of the foreign press and visitors that had gathered, though they had all been instructed - either by official handlers or material passed over upon arrival - to be respectful and not disrupt the proceedings, on pain of grave consequences. Once the call to prayer had finished, there was a large applause from the crowd and then a large roar as the trumpets sounded again, but this time as part of a larger tune.

The sound of drums, flutes and strings began to intensify along with the precision-timing of marching footsteps as a procession began to enter the District Forum. Centuries of the Caesar's Legion marched in full regalia - adorned with shining armour and shields in hand, with bright red capes draped with golden ribbon draped over their shoulder and plumed helmets; standard-bearers wore the skins of predators native to their home, with lions, wolfs and even crocodiles being prominent - who all received the euphoria of the crowd. Mixed between the centuries were a whole cadre of armoured vehicles and tanks, as well as other ceremonial units on horseback and in chariots. Civilian marchers in the parade carried banners, large flags and standards, predominantly adorned with Imperium regalia. Then at the centre of the parade came a significant number of the VIPs being drawn in by chariot, one of the most notable being the new Pro Consul Consentia Petasia, an electrum band adorning her head of braided silver hair, wearing pearl white robes with a purple shawl embroidered with gold. Drawn up beside her in another chariot was the newly anointed Archpriestess Vesnia Venator, who wore long elegant robes of dark purple and ashen embossed with the images of seraphim, a veil concealing most of her face; in her right hand she held a long metal staff, on-top of which was an emblem of a tree with many branches, a snake coiled around it's trunk. A procession of Vestals followed behind her on foot, their hands clasped together and their voices joined in song, as they wore robes in similar colours to the Archpriestess. There were also the more foreboding figures of the Daughters of Moriterpe, who were custodians of the Mortuary Cult, their black and white robes and bronze death-masks causing the most religious to look away as was custom. Amongst them all were other statesmen and women, all of whom had been assigned to help govern the new district in it's infancy before the local populace could elect their own assembly.

Once both the Pro Consul and Archpriestess had reached the stage and took their marked positions, there was a brief moment of quiet save for a few rumblings in the crowd as the centuries, armour and ceremonial units took their positions around the processional route, snapping to attention and preparing to salute. Then the trumpets, drums, strings and flutes rang again but with a much greater bass as the most important participant - the Caesar herself - made her entrance. Drawn in a golden chariot by four large white stallions, the crowd became awash with ecstasy and joy as they all tried to catch a glimpse of her, cries of 'Ave, ave!' roaring out as people held out their arms, as if being those few inches closer (even though they were realistically nowhere close) had some spiritual significance. She was near impossible to see from a ground level, as she was flanked all-around by the revered Caesar's Guard - veterans of conflict and special forces operations who were handpicked to serve as the Caesar's elite bodyguard, swearing a spiritual and blood oath to protect her with their lives - in a mix of both ceremonial and fully active armour, all still more than readily equipped to respond to any immediate danger. From above it was also difficult to distinguish her with the naked eye, though they shone as bright as the sun in contrast to the large giant who stood next to her in the chariot: Dux Imperator Hyperion, Caesar's champion and bodyguard, equally revered and feared by all within the Caesar's Armed Forces. His immensely large, dark armour and colours created an immediate contrast with Caesar, who was dressed in a long white dress and adorned with a large diamond collar and gold bands along her forearms. Around the retro waves of her radiant blonde hair was a laurel wreath made of gold and moulded into the shape of angel wings, from which a white veil concealed most of her face. The contrast between the two of them served to the theatrical nature of the scene, as the sense of dread that came with Night was contrasted by the glorious warmth and radiance of the coming Day. He was Night, and she was Day.

The cries of 'Ave' did not cease - some literally being moved to tears - as Caesar reached the stage and first was received by both the Pro Consul and Archpriestess, both bowing low as she approached. After acknowledging them, she then moved along with Hyperion to an ornate chair prepared for her at the centre of the stage, with the Archpriestess joined her at another seat on her left. Pro Consul Petasia however remained standing, and moved over to the podium that was placed on the right-hand side of the stage, positioned not to face the crowd, but to Caesar. As she made her way, the crowd started to calm, although the noise was still quite clear even from a distance.

"Noble citizens of the Imperium; sons and daughters of Kylarnatia, I bid thee welcome to this new meglapolis, your new home." She began, her voice wise and confident, the crowd responding with a warm cheer. "This monumental undertaking began and indeed exists due to the desires for a peaceful and stable future for our region, and beyond this place lay vestiges of our neighbours far and wide, all brought together by these shared desires. Let us be thankful to the Mother that we have all made it here, and by our strength of will and determination may it long continue for as long as the Imperium itself has stood and will continue to stand."

The crowds cheers grew louder, and the Pro Consul continued. "Let us be thankful, then, to the woman who for the past seventeen years has been our sovereign." She looked directly at Caesar, and as she did so the crowd erupted into yet another high crescendo of cries and applause. The centuries who were lining the processional route pounded their breastplates in salute. Caesar for her part did little to react, her figure and body language carrying a composure of calm and stability. The Pro Consul continued speaking, and it would soon become clear to outsiders that they were witnessing a panegyric, performed with such theatre yet at the same time expressed with deep sincerity. It was a custom performed whenever the Caesar made public appearances of such a high-profile political nature.

"Noble citizens of the Imperium; sons and daughters of Kylarnatia, has she not been our guiding light through dark times?" The crowd responded: Ave! Ave!

"Indeed, she has. While there have been those who have tried and will continue to try to undermine us and the noble Gothic Alliance, trying their best to unleash the unruly forces of Chaos, our beatific sovereign has stood stalwart against their treachery and deception. She has been instrumental in bringing about the changes that have renewed the strength of our alliance, and by her command our brave men and women now stand ready - with bolstered strength and determination - to face any threats to the progress that has been made." Ave! Ave!

"Is she not a worthy Champion of Helios?" Ave! Ave!

"Is her grace and beauty matched by any other?" The crowd responded firmly: No! No!

"For how long will her spirit shine as bright as Helios in the sky?" The crowd and centuries roared: Vivat! Vivat! - Eternity.

Dreadfire Square, Pax District

Later that day, Caesar - along with Hyperion and the Guard, the Pro Consul and Legatus Dux Kyle Lucius Jordanus, the Lord Ambassador of the Imperium Antiquum to the Gothic Council - had made their way to Dreadfire Square, where they joined several other Gothic Lords and important figures of the newly opened Pax Gothica to witness the official opening. Caesar's composure had now subtly changed; while she still carried herself with grace and perfect posture that befitted her beatific nature, her face was now uncovered, her eyes bright and enchanting and her face far more expressive, a pearly white smile through deep red lips revealed at every applause. She was no less immaculate, though certainly more human.

Having been asked to speak after Castellan Burnham, she stood and made her way to the podium, acknowledging the Castellan with a gentle nod and a smile as they passed. The crowd was much more diverse, and while cries of 'Ave!' were still audible from the Kylarnatians in the crowd, they definitely weren't as loud as the general applause and cheers that came. Clearing her throat discreetly, Caesar then spoke clearly and softly into the microphone, her voice poised with a gentle yet confident tone; motherly.

"Citizens of Gholgoth and the world; my fellow Gothic Lords; Castellan Burnham; Lord and Lady Ambassadors to the Gothic Council; Praetors; Workmen and women of Pax Gothica;

Firstly I would like to echo the sentiments of Castellan Burnham, and thank all of those who sacrificed much in order to bring this place where we stand now from merely a dream into a reality. Without you, none of this would have been possible. All of you have gone above and beyond the expectations my fellow Lords and I had for this project, and I am deeply honoured and moved to be here to witness this official opening. Your names will forever be immortalised, and may the first statues to enter the Hall of Heroes be representations of yourselves. We owe you a great debt, and immortality within the memory of this ancient land is the least we can offer you for your service. Thank you.

Next, let me tell you all about that dream. When we all met two years ago in Citadel City to discuss the reforms required for the Gothic Council, there was a lot of uncertainty. None of us knew what the outcome of that summit was going to be, and even after we had made the official decrees and done all the signing and the handshaking, nothing was taken for granted. Not even now. Yet, the dream is beginning to be realised. A dream of bringing peace and order back to these lands, to have the Alliance stand for those values and to show the world how humanity should aspire for greater things and can achieve them. Here, in Pax Gothica, the dream of a Gothic Peace is immortalised in metal and stone, glass and steel, concrete and earth. There are many bridges that still have to be built and crossed, storms weathered, but here today we are making the first great strides towards that end.

There will be those who seek to try and undermine this dream, chaotic forces from both outside and within. This is a reality we must accept, but as I stand here today, renewed in the resolve that was born two years ago from Citadel City, I do not fear them. Neither should you; for in this monumental gathering of peoples and nation-states, we see how working in unison makes us infallible. Skyans, Dephirians, Pudites, Drakonians, Ghantar, Reman, Freekish, Anagonians, Telrosians, Milenkans, Kylarnatians and more. Our differences in cultural experience and worldview can be freely expressed in this venue, brought together in a harmony that can drown out any who think they can silence it. Justice, Liberty, Peace and Tolerance; all of these things are what we strive for, and no one - not even gods - can stop us in this endeavour. Anyone who mistakes these desires for peace as a sign of weakness will meet a quick and unfortunate end.

The Imperium Antiquum is committed to this dream. I am committed to this dream, and with the Mother and you all as my witnesses here now, I will remain committed until my dying breath. With pen and when ultimately necessary, the sword, I will see it realised. For now, let us celebrate what we have achieved thus far; while we are nowhere near the end, it is the end of the beginning. Where we go next ultimately rests upon all our shoulders, and so I hope you will join me in this dream. Let us learn together, grow together, love and laugh together, and stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of adversity. Let the world know that we are accepting of all, but victim to none.

Semper Certans, Gholgoth!"

As there wasn’t any particular set agenda for the Xeraphian visit and so the Lord Ambassador Yukari Alagon had hosted a reception for their delegation. The reception would be held at the Skyan Embassy in Dreadfire Square just across the way from Gothic Hall.

The Skyan Embassy exterior was built like a stone cathedral with large stained glass windows of every color. Together with the red carpets that had been laid carefully along the floors, the effect created a rainbow inside the Great Lobby. The columns were carved stone with the ceiling laid with sky blue tiles.

The great doors on either side of the long corridor were open allowing a gentle breeze to flow through the space. Lord Ambassador Alagon had ordered a spread of food and wine from all different parts of Gholgoth to present the Xeraphian with a taste of the region.

The Lord Ambassador had just finished giving a tour of the Embassy to the delegation as they entered the Grand Lobby. Her blue hair looking almost perfectly naturally within the colorful beams of light that poured in through the stained glass. A server poured them all wine as she asked if they had any questions. A number of ambassadors from different nations had gathered as well as various Skyan trade officials.

Princess Lilith, unaccustomed to such sumptuous and brilliant colors in a building, was the first to remark, "Such beauty, Ambassador. Back in Ssyn, we are used to grey, overcast skies and a sooty, oily fog that hangs over our mountain ranges for most of the year. I wonder if we could have an embassy here in Pax Gothica? I would surely spend quite a bit of time here if that were possible."

Before the ambassador could respond, Emperor Amalric said, "Just the question I was going to ask. Perhaps we could exchange embassies, one here and one in Ravennii. The Kingdom of Xeraph itself is a sunny, warm, yet advanced nation well accustomed to foreign dignitaries. There are forty-seven embassies in Ravennii, all long-standing allies and friends of the Empire. We would, of course, provide you with all amenities and anything in particular that you required."

He paused for a moment, looking around at the magnificance of Pax Gothica. "It would also be of interest to open channels of commerce with you and your merchants, Ambassador. The Empire has vast resources both on Terra and out in our deep-space holdings. Prince Ricala not only governs Auralinia, but is the Director of our Xeraphian Space League. We've settled numerous planetary systems in two large Expanses roughly 600 light years from Terra. Our space fleet, both merchant and military, regularly patrol the trade-lanes between here and the outlying Expanses."

"But, enough talk for now. I see that you have most graciously provided us with a feast." Grinning, he winked at the Ambassador. "And I hope, Lord Ambassador, that you and I could sit next to each other, so as to get to know one another better."

Jhane sighed and thought, 'These damned Xeraphian aristocrats! When will they learn to keep it in their pants?' She eyed, somewhat nervously, the Custodians and the White Guards that, at a distance, surrounded the long feasting table.

She plucked at Amalric's sleeve and whispered, "Please, Sire. We are guests here. Be aware that our hosts are very well protected and in all probability will not be amused at foreigners being...over-friendly...with their nobility."

The Emperor, with mock-seriousness, said, "Why Jhane! You know me better than that."

She threw him an icy stare. "Yes, I do. And that's what worries me!"

Grand Duchess Sybele returned to the table, grinning miscieviously. Nodding to the Emperor and the Ambassador, she sat across from him.

He bent over and in a whisper asked, "Where have you been? How the hell long does it take to powder your nose?"

Before she could answer, her Imp, perched on her shoulder, tossed a purple poker chip onto the table. Sybele scooped it up, hoping no one saw it. "I needed a drink, Sire. So I went to this very interesting tavern run by a woman named Jessi. Colorful clientel. I'll fill you in later."

Pax International Airport
Pax Gothica, Gholgoth

Another passenger jet touched down at Pax International Airport. It was truly an international flight, its occupants came from across the region and outside it. Four men aboard this flight were not Goths, but Kolechians. The odds that they were the first Kolechians to see Pax Gothica were high. Kolechians, as tourists, were usually known to travel to a rather enclosed area around them within Greater Dienstad. These countries had no conflicts, crime (if any) was not at high levels, and they were affordable. However, it was not impossible that Kolechians if they truly wished, could end up even father from home. It merely depended on their plans, finances, and the political situation of an area. There were certain countries that had to be avoided farther out, but this was an easily fixable problem.

The four men, even with their first destination, had been on a journey many citizens could only dream of. The sheer distances were boggling to most. They had already been traveling for some time, going to different nations and staying in hotels, paid for by the government. Kolechians were generally not actively observed by anyone if they left the country, outside of the rare embassy getting their name on a list to show they had arrived, were expected, or leaving. If not an embassy then the airlines had their information. Regardless, most people went on trips and returned without incident or notice. These men, were noticed though. The weary travelers sat next to each other in pairs, in two rows. The man sitting in the outside seat in the front row was thirty-eight year old Abukhan Sheripov. He was the leader of the group, a diplomatic employee it was his job to ensure that the two men behind him (and himself) meet with people and both establish contacts and possibly make deals. He was also, to a lesser degree trusted with security, but that, was the main job of the man next to him. Abukhan was an experienced veteran of his job, his government had only a couple of embassies in his country, and around the same number outside it. This didn't mean Kolechia was cut off from the world, merely that it was in official channels. His countrymen still travelled as tourists, students, and for business. He was not an ambassador, he was a "mid-level" member, but could unofficially act in ways that resembled one. To explain for this, there is a certain strange mixture of both established protocol and improvisation that occurs in the government.

His background was rather humble, he was born in Argun, outside the capital. His uncle was a politician and in a rather distanced amount saw politics at work first hand. He attended college and was able to meet foreign peoples which sparked a greater interest in them and their relationship to his country. With work, academic accomplishments and personal connections he got his career started in Kashgar. He was of average height, had rather curly brown hair, had green eyes, a straight nose, and olive complexion. He wore a blue suit, white shirt and green tie that matched his eyes. He was married, he and his wife Arusa shared several older children together.

Next to him was thirty-two year old Vakha Sultygov, a member of the DGB (State Security Department) who had a string of operational credits to his name. He was a rising member in the ranks and his being on this mission was a sign that trust and faith in his capabilities from his superiors was rising. He was slightly shorter than all the others, he had dark black hair combed back, blue eyes, sharp nose and a fair complexion. He was clean shaven, wore a black suit, white shirt and red tie. His mission was to keep everyone out of trouble, observe and report any meetings between anyone in the group and their foreign contact. He was also to keep an eye out for anyone possibly from Dienstad. He had traveled (and stayed) separately at every location, and kept separately from the others inside the airport. Everywhere they went he followed, eventually. He and Abukhan had met in Kashgar at the DGB headquarters. Both men had been polite and cooperative to each other, privately though, Abukhan couldn't help but feel the DGB was being rather nosy sending an agent, but this wasn't anything against Vakha personally, In fact, the two got along. It appeared that Vakhas superiors felt that it required him to tag along, they were concerned if such a trip were known, how other nations would respond. Quite frankly there were nations who would prefer nobody from Kolechia reached Gholgoth or met anyone who resided there. There was fighting between nations of these regions, but regardless, Kolechia was not involved, and this produced the sentiment that Kolechia could conduct dialogue with anyone. He had been married for a few years, he shared a daughter with his wife Kesira.

In the back row sat Durgali Dratchev, a forty-five year old economic minister from outside Grestin. He had like Abukhan, worked his way up and had distinguished himself in college (in different subjects) and got into the government. He was normally busy working like dozens and even hundreds of others in trying to bring re-vitalization to the country, and to see it more on par with other nations. He left a small trail of achievements wherever he worked, locally or in the government. He normally sat on a council that met with politicians, business leaders, and locals etc. But he received an important message, one that had dragged him all the way out here. He had a family of his own, his children being the oldest of all the groups families. He always seemed to have a calm and flatline emotion. To Vakha he was even more "official" than Abukhan. He had a dark complexion, dark eyes under thick grey eyebrows and greyed hair combed back. He had a slightly short but thick nose and grey moustache. He wore a brown suit with black tie and white shirt.

Next to him was Murad Musliyevich, a forty-two year old business man who worked for Emir Auto, a powerful vehicle company headquartered in Misab. He was going to not only represent his company but also if welcomed, connect both leading and smaller but competitive Kolechian companies. It was decided in a separate meeting that took place at the Capital that it would be easier to send a few rather than many. Personally some of these companies he had little experience with but in his briefcase he carried a collection of contact information for them. He had served in Emir Auto for about five years now as a domestic representative and dealer. He met with dealerships all the way to well known racers. He was of average height and weight, and had an olive complexion. His hair was dark and short and combed forward. He had dark brown eyes a straight nose and light facial hair. He was married but when not on work was known (well known in his industry and outside it) as a partier. When he was working or having fun he was taking care of his Mother alongside his siblings. He wore a brown suit with black shirt and shoes, and a thin gold necklace. He was born outside Misab to rather rough beginnings. His father was not always present, but illegal substances were sometimes present with his mother. With so many reasons that could limit someone he instead succeeded and got to where he was.

The four men had spent the hours as best they could. Vakha usually looked out the window while Abukhan read books, or domestic magazines for amusement, trying to decipher what the subject was etc. Durgali slept and Murad was usually the least concerned it seemed, playing on his phone. As they landed only Vakha spoke, giving a soft "Wow", as he saw the flower petal shaped islands lit up by the buildings and life going on within. The plane taxied for a short time and finally stopped, giving way to a din of foreign voices and sounds of people shifting and getting their things ready to enter Pax Gothica.

The Skyan Embassy

As the Xeraphian dined and wined, several Skyan and other Gothic trade officials entered the room to greet the delegation. The Skyans had a great interest in establishing additional trade routes and Pax Gothica itself needed the trade routes to be sustainable. While there would always be a lot of activity with all the diplomatic offices here the island needed to become a trade hub to really be sustainable. The island chain’s port district featured a deep water port with massive warehouse facilities… facilities that at this point weren't anywhere near full.

Ezekiel Cross, head of the Skyan Trade Office, walked across the room to the greet the Emperor and the rest of delegation. He was a tall man with broad shoulders and a well trimmed beard that had a hint of red. Like most of the Skyan Diplomatic Corps, he wore a sky blue blazer with a gold tie.

“Greetings your majesty, my name is Ezekiel Cross. It’s an honor to meet you. Welcome to Pax.”

Pax International Airport

The Skyan Lord Ambassador to the Gothic Council Yukari Alagon had snuck away from the reception to greet the new arrivals. This was the first time that Havensky had come into contact with the Kolechians in an official capacity so Yukari didn’t mind doing double-duty.

Because the Kolechians had travelled commercial, as they departed the plane they were greeted by two aides from the Diplomatic Corps. They led the delegation to a receiving room where the Lord Ambassador was waiting.

The Skyans had rolled out the (gothic) red carpet as the flags from the region were stationed on the edge of the room. An aide presented a small basket of bread and a pint of ale for each member.

“Gentleman, my name is Lord Ambassador Yukari Alagon. On behalf of the Gothic Council, welcome to Pax Gothica.”

The Emperor, none too pleased with Princess Sybele, stood and greeted Cross. "Mr. Cross, a pleasure." Tossing the fancy embossed napkin on the table, he said, "Walk with me. I think we have mutual interests as far as trade is concerned. Although I do not normally involve myself in affairs of state at this level, I am most curious about the Goth-Skyan overall operations. What your parameters are, what the availability of your goods would be on an on-going basis, and so on. Just the basics at this point. The Empire's trade concerns are handled by my nephew, Earl Ricard de Veurey, who is more than capable of hammering out a simple, yet productive, agreement. The Empire has vast holdings in all of the energy sectors both on Terra and out in the Galaxy. And of course, Xeraphian curiosities and delicacies are abundant." Amalric stood, once again admiring the view of the magnicent city. "Mr. Cross, I am impressed. I do not often admit when I am, and I do not say it lightly. Despite the large number of nations in our region, just a handful of them are really notable. We in Xeraph have been aware of the Gholgothans for centuries, but never had much in the way of contact. If it is amenable to you and your leaders, I would like to begin to change that."

Pax Gothica

"Into the belly of the beast."

It was a phrase that keep running through Iwan Oakenfist's mind as the jetliner made its final approach to land at the airport. Clansmen occupied the seats around him, some for security and some for clerical work, all eagerly awaiting to have their feet back on terra firma after such a long journey.

Gholgoth.

It occupied a curious position within the psyche of Greater Dienstad, the long feared aggressor from across the distant ocean and yet no actual conflict had actually occurred between the two regions. If anything there was an ever increasing involvement in the affairs of one region by the other. The Scandinvan War being the biggest example and being waged by the Macabeeans and Scandinvans, a war that the Commonwealth had sent some troops to serve alongside the Macabean army. Though with Morrdh laying effectively on the entry point to Greater Dienstad to anyone travelling from the Gothic lands, the Commonwealth decided it was time that it had a presence in Gholgoth.

So here was the scion of Clan Oakenfist and a band of his clansmen.

Iwan was a heavily built man with a spiral of tattoos that seemed to cover the left side of his face and extend down to his left hand. There was a mess of ginger hair on top that was tied back into a braid, plus a short but shaggy ginger beard. The clansmen were similarly attired to their lord, though Iwan wore a finer suit that befitted his status. Pinned to his jacket was a raven's feather, a physical representation of his title of 'Lord Ravener' and effective ambassador of Her Morridane Majesty's Government to the Region of Gholgoth.

Pax International Airport
Pax Gothica

The job of any Confederate Military Policeman who was assigned outside of the Unity District was simply custodial. Typically, they were armed, and acting in collaboration with airport security Senior Trooper John Pastwell was not an exception. His assignment today had been at the request of the rotational officers in control of security around the airport, some few security officers were on vacation and since in-house security was low the higher-ups wanted to go for the cheaper solution; free. In the terms of payment, it was free for Pax Gothica and their resident council, but not free for Anagonia - all expenses were accounted for anyhow. John was stationed at the security gate for new arrivals, worn in full MP attire which included bucket helmet adorned with the letters "CMP" in white coloration with blue background and with matching flak vest, along with his holstered K100. It was the full intention of the Anagonians to ensure their Military Policeman were very visible, and very clearly designated, so as to not promote confusion. John was also almost inescapable to miss due to his height of around six-and-a-half feet. Native Anagonian, his tan features and native appearance made him look very much like a stereotypical Native American chieftain from some cowboys and indians comic. His eyes, a deep blue, were the only contrast to his appearance.

When the latest aircraft to land had successfully completed its berthing procedures and began to unload, John would have been one of the first figures the new arrivals would see. Across from him, equally so attired, was his partner CMP who had accompanied him on this position fill assignment. Behind the two were the traditional greeters assigned to this station, those that would hand out pamphlets for the new arrivals, greet important individuals, guide them through the rest of the security checkpoints, et cetera. The first obstacle for these new arrivals, however, was passing through the metal detector unmolested. For the majority, this process was streamlined due to their belongings currently being unloaded from the airliner being pre screened down below, and thereafter sorted for baggage return. For those who brought with them belongings on their person, belongings that typically set off metal detectors, Johns job would come into play.

The Senior Trooper was polite and professional, as he was trained to do when undertaking his typical civil protection duties at home and in the Unity District. "Please empty your pockets", he would request, and when they would his partner would move the wand over them. The next screening would be the X-RAY machine, subsequently alerting the in-house security to any further concerns, so this part of the job was essentially a pre-screening. Handing over and then back plastic bins where folks belongings would be placed and grabbed, this process would repeat with each and every arrival. Patient, quick, smooth process. That was when John noted the distinctly different arrivals, the ones that he knew were not native to Gholgoth. A distance off his eyesight was good enough to make out the foreign features, the reddish hair and clan tattoos, the distinctive gait and walk, the distinctive difference he had been trained to notice. He eyed his partner silently, and as he handed the belongings back to another successful entry, he keyed the radio mic for the in-house.

"Code Foxtrot," he said, silently. The code for foreign - truly foreign - arrivals. This was the signal to up the standards down the chain, to give a good impression. John had been placed here for this very specific purpose, and trusted to alert the in-house crew of this very important type of arrival. He went back to his normal procedure, trying and hopefully succeeding in not breaking his stoic yet polite and professional demeanor.

When the arrivals came, he made sure to greet them with a curt, "Pax Gothica welcomes you," before going about the standard security procedure. His job was done, and further down would be the delegates to greet them. Of course they could request his presence, since they were clearly visiting dignitaries of some sort, but that was likely unknown to them and therefore best taken care of by other individuals.

Greeting the Clansmen

Pax International Airport,
Pax Gothica

"I sure hope that Trooper isn't giving them any trouble." Was the first thought that ran through the mind of Luísa Fabiona Luciana, a Junior Legatus of the Imperium Antiquum Embassy to the Gothic Council, as she waited patiently to receive the Morridane delegation. Standing a few inches below the Kylarnatian average for women at six feet and two inches, Luísa was of mixed heritage, having been born to a Kylarnatian mother and Latino father. She was olive-skinned with a cool undertone, and her eyes were a deep brown, as was her hair which was styled with an undercut on the left-side and back, her length falling on the right. Dressed in a well-kept navy-blue pinstripe suit with spotless black boots, she wore her diplomatic pin - a golden Kylarnatian imperial eagle - on the right lapel of her double-breasted jacket. On the left was a service medal, recognising the two-year mandatory service she had served in the Caesar's Imperial Armed Forces. Just behind her in a cordoned-off, red-carpeted section of the airport where she stood there was a small honour guard of the Pax Custodes, carrying the flags of Kylarnatia, the Gothic Alliance, Pax Gothica, and of Morrdh. To the left there were priestly attendants of the Sacerdotium, and behind the cordons, eager journalists and photographers as well as curious passers-by had gathered to watch the official greeting.

The agreement that had been reached between the Golden Throne and the Gothic Council at the Summit in Citadel City had caught the interest and imagination of many of Gholgoth's intelligentsia. It was unprecedented, and while the Macabean and allied forces were working within a strictly set perimeter that the eagle-eyed Gothic states worked to maintain, it never the less opened the way for further cooperation between the Gothic Alliance and extra-regional states on matters of security and even just general diplomacy, whereas before the Alliance had very much kept itself to itself barring a few episodes of violent outings which had once been its creed (and still was for some). Such was the hybrid nature of the region's new order, which sought to maintain the "old ways" of mutual regional defence and cooperation and the ideas of Gothic brotherhood, while at the same time recognising the changes and impact of world and regional events - such as the global financial crisis some years back, caused in part by an attempted blockade on Gholgoth - that required the Alliance to adapt and take on a more multi-faceted role. It was all new, and would continue to be shaped over the coming months and years, with places like Pax Gothica serving as the stage.

Enter the Morridane delegation. The Commonwealth was a respectable power of the region of Greater Dienstad, an ally of the Golden Throne who was also active in the war against the Scandinvans, a war which had caused the universes of each respective region to bleed into one another. Relations were undoubtedly mixed, but there was clear intent on both sides to build bridges. So it was the case that multiple Dienstadi states had been extended an invitation to Pax Gothica, in the hopes that they would establish embassies and create channels of communication. The Skyans and the Ghantish had led the way in diplomatic efforts with the region of Greater Dienstad via the Golden Throne, something which the Imperium Antiquum hoped to eventually emulate with the expected visit of the Macabean Emperor to Krytopia, and the reason why Luísa was here to greet the Morridane now. The Kylarnatians were both curious and eager to meet them, and as a long-established Gothic power, intent on making a grand impression.

As soon as Iwan Oakenfist and his retinue of clansmen were past security and made it into the terminal, they were escorted to the cordoned area where the Kylarnatian diplomat awaited them. As they approached, the cameras started to flash and a murmur of curiosity and mild excitement arose from the crowd as Luísa stepped forward and greeted Iwan with a firm handshake, clasping his forearm as was custom in Kylarnatia.

"Ambassador Oakenfist, I'm Legatus Luísa Fabiona Luciana of the Ancient Empire of Kylarnatia. Please allow me to be the first to welcome you and your clansmen here to Pax Gothica!" She gave him a confident smile as she clasped his forearm for a second or two more before eventually disengaging. Gesturing to the priestly attendants to their left, the six young women who were dressed in plain white robes stood forward, two of them holding gold libation bowls, two with both serviettes and towels, while another two carried trays of freshly baked brioche bread, a staple in Kylarnatia and used primarily in this very simple yet highly traditional ceremony.

"I'd like for us to wash our hands and break bread together, so that we may foster the start of good relations between our two peoples." Luísa then proceeded to unbutton and roll up her sleeves as she guided Iwan to place his hands in one of the bowls with hers, which they would proceed to wash for a few seconds before then drying them with the towels provided. Then, picking up one of the rolls of brioche, the Kylarnatian broke it in half and shared it with Iwan. It was a simple sweet treat, but one that was meant to symbolise good intentions and kindness. The bowl they had used was symbolically reserved for them, as the acolyte who held it placed it on a ceremonial plinth that had been arranged before then proceeding to aid Iwan's clansmen in having their hands washed in the second bowl, also breaking the rolls of brioche and serving it to them. More pictures were taken and the crowd remained curious, though the Kylarnatians among them smiled and uttered brief prayers of joy to the Mother for this occasion.

"If it pleases you, I would like to invite you and your clansmen to Urba Gothica - the Imperium's district here in Pax - to be our guests. I am told that the Pro Consul would be happy to receive you for a meeting. Alternatively however, I can help in arranging any other visit or business you'd like to make during your time here." Luísa smiled warmly as she awaited the man's response.

"So far, so good."

Pax Gothica
Torch Building

"All passengers: We are on approach to our docking station and will be docked shortly. Please prepare to disembark in an orderly fashion. Your luggage will be transported to Area B-7. The crew wishes you a safe and happy stay in Pax Gothica, and thanks you for flying on the Altostratus.", the loudspeakers broadcasted the captain's voice as the airship prepared to unload its passengers and cargo at Torch Building. Special Representative Gerhartsen and the other approximately 50 people from the Outpost on the airship grabbed their hand luggage and waited for the docking to be completed.

After disembarking, they discreetly bypassed the security checkpoint. Some Skyan representatives had already been waiting for them and with their authority, led the Peninsularians in small groups to the baggage area where they picked up the rest of their luggage. "The crates have already been moved to your offices.", one of them remarked to Gerhartsen. "The company vehicles, as planned, arrived yesterday via airship and are parked in the underground parking."

Down the elevator, they finally arrived at the office space the Peninsularians had rented (under a false identity, of course). The nameplate in front read "S. Scheppert & K. Racht Mining Support Co.", the name of a small, newly founded firm active in the mining sector. The company had specially been founded to serve as a front and keep the Peninsularian presence in Pax unknown to the public. After a short talk with the Skyan representatives and fixing some appointments (for instance with the chief of the Skyan HQ security), the group dispersed. While some of the support technicians as well as some of the non-military staff began to familiarize themselves with the computer operating systems, the diplomatic and guard staff made their way to the back end of the office area. A hidden access panel in the CEO's office revealed direct access to another office area, which housed several offices for the Peninsularian diplomatic staff. Soon, technicians already got to work installing the computers and uploading the regular Peninsularian operating system.

The guards on the other hand, about the strength of two and a half squads, dispersed to inspect the area and take up their positions. They were provided uniforms similar to those of the Skyan heavy security, though augmented with some Peninsularian technology to be highly resistant to small arms fire. As for their weapons, the containers the Peninsularians had shipped with them contained several racks of weapons - mostly P90s and MP7s to not seem out of place in comparison to the Skyan guards, though the guards posted in the diplomatic offices and the apartments also received assault rifles. All in all, the force wasn't particularly large - only about 25 men. However, each and every one of them was a trained soldier.

After about an hour, Gerhartsen way approached by the commanding officer of the guard teams, Lieutenant Gionson. "Special Representative, the area has been secured. We have our guards posted and I will be meeting with the Skyan security chief in about half an hour. The windows are, as planned, bulletproof. The scanner in the doorframe is working perfectly." Gerhartsen looked up from his own phone, displaying his schedule for the following week. "Very good, Lieutenant. I'll be meeting with the Skyans as well shortly, to talk about hiring staff for the company. Then our real work can begin."

Pax International Airport, Pax Gothica
Gholgoth.

The plane touched down at Pax International Airport following several hours of flight time to go from essentially one region to another. It had come to be that Gholgoth as a region was changing from it's decades of solitude and warfare. Hannibal Reichhold didn't much care for what progressive measures the region was taking as of late and arrived in Pax Gothica for diplomatic duties and putting the Ordenite Reich forward as it already was in the neighboring region of Varathron. Ordenite Dietsland was definitely a major factor in the reasoning for having Reichhold a Obergruppenfuhrer in the Ordenite SS and Reich Leader of the National Socialist Party arrive in the middle of Gholgoth. Relations with other notable Gothic powers would need to be addressed and made for the Ordenite Reich to gauge what the region would think of them. Reichhold of course did not come by himself as several of his closest aides also came to accompany him and assist him with whatever he needed during his time in Pax Gothica. As he walked into the main terminal in his formal military like attire with his aides close behind, he wondered in the back of his mind if this was worth the time.

The House of the Castellan

Evelyn let out a deep long sigh.

“You’re doing it again sweetie.”, called her husband from the other room.

Evelyn Burnham, Castellan of Pax Gothica, let out another deep long sigh for effect.

“I know, I know… I just really really rather not today you know?”

“Yeah, I mean… wasn't it technically your call to meet with the Ordenites?”

Evelyn attached her chatelaine to her belt as she took a deep breath and left her bedroom. The chatelaine was a brooch adorned with the Tree of Pax Gothica held by the teeth of the Gothic snake. Attached to the brooch was were several short chains on it that carried the keys to the House of the Castellan, Executor’s Mansion, Gothic Hall, Hall of Heroes, and Praetor Hall along with the seal of her office. The keys jingled against each other as Evelyn walked over to the kitchen.

She was wearing a high collared jet black modern pantsuit with a dark gothic red blouse. Normally, like most of the Skyan delegates she would have accented their gear with some blue or gold or winged lion accents. However, this was not the occasion for it. It was not in the least bit. Her hair was tied up in a tight bun instead of letter her dark curls float down in a ponytail. The only personal jewelry she had on was her wedding ring.

She kissed her husband on the cheek as she grabbed a bagel before sitting down at the breakfast bar.

“It’s technically my call but I report to the Lords and the Gothic Reforms clearly state that not only is this a truce zone - but that all are welcome to visit unless they had previously broke the peace in Pax. And this is the first time those those…verfickte Ordenite-Hurensöhne have come to call.”

“Oh, look at you pulling out the fun curses. No Lion’s paw brooch?”

“No, If I have to greet them then I’m doing it as the Castellan and not as a Skyan. None of the other nations wanted to do it given the Ordenite Reich’s reputation.”

“Won’t this cause protests in Citadel?”

“Probably, but less than if the Lord Ambassador greeted them. I’m only greeting them in the name of Pax Gothic and the Council and not Havensky so there won’t be a lot to protest officially. My understanding is that no nation is sending out a representative so we’ll have no flags of any nation. It'll just be Pax and Gholgoth. I not even taking a Skyan aide; It’ll just be the Custodians.”

“I can see the logic in that.”

“Bah!”, shouted Evelyn as she chomped down on her bagel. “I’m not cut out for all this diplomacy crap. I’m used to buildings and sidewalks and things that don't have motives and aren't completely duplicitous!”

“Sweetheart, you are good at this. You seemed to handle all the international building crews just fine. Building this city with crews from a dozen different nations. Give yourself some credit.”

“Come on, those were my people. There’s only so many ways to swing a hammer and what language you speak while doing it doesn’t amount to a whole lot.”

She gave another deep sigh as she finished her breakfast, kissed her husband goodbye, picked up her crimson oak ceremonial mace and headed out the door.

Pax International Airport
To the tune of “The Old Ways”

It was appropriately overcast on the day that the Ordenite Reich arrived to Pax Gothica with the sky dark and threatening to rain. The Castellan and her company of Custodians would meet with Reichhold on the tarmac of Pax International Airport as to prevent protests from interrupting the ceremony.

The Castellan was flanked by five Custodians. Two to her right carried the flags of Pax Gothica and Gholgoth. The two on her left carried a tray of bread in small bite-sized rolls and mugs of Kölsch beer. The fifth one stood just ahead of the Castellan. Behind them, was a company of one hundred Custodians each wearing the highly visible blue and bright yellow uniforms.

“En nombre de los Lores Góticos, bienvenidos a la ciudad de Pax Gothica.”, began the Castellan in Spanish. As she finished, the fifth Custodian began to translate the Spanish back into the Ordenite language. It was an odd step for Evelyn, who knew that both she and Reichhold spoke the same languages - but in this way she didn’t have to utter the words in her mother tongue.

“A gift of bread and drink.”, Evelyn said through the translator as the two Custodians with the trays stepped forward. The origin of the guests rights tradition had been lost to time, but an important one that must be observed no matter who the guest was. The arriving party wouldn’t be harmed here in Pax Gothica no matter how offensive Evelyn found their politics.

Hannibal Reichhold looked upon Evelyn with a indifferent stare as she at first spoke in Spanish similarly to Mokan Spanish from Dienstad. The aides behind him looked between each other and talked amongst themselves in hushed tones. When she spoke again and her translator translated it back into Ordenite, he grew a smile that has in the past been the last thing his victims would see. The Custodians with the trays bearing bread and alcohol were thanked by the aides as bread was broken and passed around, along with the mugs too.

Hannibal and his aides ate and drank for a short time with his Gothic hosts. Despite getting little to no real chatter out of Evelyn or the other Custodians present, he had enjoyed it.

“Herr Castellan, I and my Helfer’s are honored to be here in Pax Gothica.” Reichhold quickly saluted Evelyn with a stiff raised right arm. The aides also followed suite behind their superior as all of them said in near unison.

“Sieg Heil!”

It was at that point Evelyn realized that this was going to end badly. It was like watching a bad first date or seeing a sideways crack in the foundation. The moment she saw that particular fascist salute. A gesture that dripped with so much hatred and xenophobia that she felt like she needed to bleach the tarmac. Her people were comprised of so many different races and faiths that she might as well have been staring at the antithesis of her nation. Only the Laws of Pax, many of which had ironically been written largely by her people, mandated a degree of civility and politeness that she would not have dared give them if she didn’t wear the Castellen’s Badge.

“Reichslieter Reichhold, we have arranged transportation for you to your accommodations and to the Pax District.”, Evelyn said as she gestured to the row of private cars parked on the tarmac. The escorting Custodians opened the doors of the armored sedans indicating that it was time to go. Evelyn finished by saying, “If there is anything you need please let us know. Hasta luego.”

Evelyn held the mace in her hands as she watched as the visiting party get into their vehicles and embark towards the Promenade District. As they drove away, Evelyn pulled aside two Custodians. Evelyn guessed that one had to be a Kylarnatian by his impossible height. Evelyn could see the national flag of Ghant on the other officer’s shoulder before they both turned to face her. She checked the name tape of the Ghantish officer before speaking.

“Sargeant Carranza, I want twenty-four hour surveillance on their entire delegation. I want to know who they talked to, where they went, and I want to know how many shits that Ordenshit took. Do you understand?”

“Yes My Lady.”, he responded and this time with a proper salute which Evelyn appreciated even as she still wasn’t used to the whole saluting thing. She returned the salute and made her way to her own car.

She considered the Ordenites to be uninvited guests in Pax Gothica, but she wasn’t about to let them wander around unsupervised. However, her role was to keep the peace and the doors open. That meant that she couldn’t formerly tell the Council what she thought of Reichhold as not to taint the neutrality of her office. However, personally giving the order for surveillance in plain view of a Ghantish and Kylarnatian officer meant that the odds were good their governments would learn of it and start to look into why.

Maybe her husband was right, maybe she was getting good at this.

"Sieg Heil!"

The salute of the Ordenites was heard across the region. In the Confederate States, one person in particular took note of the salute and words used to symbolize dedication to their cause. Sitting behind his desk of office, President Franklin Johnson felt a sudden weakness overtake him. He leaned forward, hand slipping up to press his index finger and thumb between the ridge of his eyes as they closed. An series of emotions played across his expression, subtle yet hiding the intense struggle that his will fought within him. The words of his grandfather, and his great grandfather, and the images from that terrible period in Anagonia's history. At the time of him hearing it, it had been a child's tale of warning. For all the years of his life he considered these events the precious sharings of memories between father and sons, and so on and so on. Now, something clicked, all at once making sense of what was once thought to be understood.

On the television screen, the proceedings played out on the news broadcast, but the words of the anchor following the clip were lost to Franklins hearing. The Greatest War, the War on Fascism, had been an ultimate display of egotistical narcissism, all for the purpose of furthering the Arms Manufacturing industry within the old, waning United Republic of Anagonia. Franklins father had told it best; corporate bigwigs had lobbied the President to get involved in a looming world war, promising fortunes and the rise of Anagonian military supremacy. The way it had played out, however, had been far different.

Under the guise of patriotic defense against fascism, the citizens within the United Republic had been tricked into being motivated to serve the best interests of freedom and democracy throughout the known world. The first Great War had involved the very people that Franklin had seen saluting the TV, or at least descendants thereof. The United Republic had fought a bitter war to drown down the military might of those people, wrongfully infringing their sovereign rights in more ways than one. The war progressed into another great war, then another, with various parties involved, until finally Anagonia had dared to take on the entirety of Gholgoth deeming, in its delusional fantasy of patriotism, that fascism had to be purged.

Franklins father had told him the stories from the inside, how folks had begun to wake up the Corporate Dictatorship they were facing. By the time anyone had the nerve to stand up, it was too late. The fleets of the Gothic forces surrounded Anagonia, forcing a costly surrender that eventually would lead to the toppling of the United Republic, to the rise of Tiberius Samsus, to the Confederacy as it was today.

Everything that had happened during that time, every single thing, had directly influenced the timeline of events that lead to the birth and creation of a more perfect nation, one less influenced by corporations and moreso by its citizens. In that very war against the descendants of those Ordenites had then-Colonel Tiberius Samsus served, waking up to the atrocities, to the horrible waste and aftermath. The uselessness of that war. The pointless loss of life. Had it not been for those events, Anagonia as it stood today would not have existed.

Looking to the screen through what felt like foggy eyes, Franklin understood what his father had taught him. The mistakes of the past must never be repeated, and this was a chance to start anew on a good step towards diplomacy. Slowly, he moved for his Presidential phone.

Unity District
District Governors Office

There was an odd assortment of confused emotions that played across the District Governors face as he set the red phone receiver down. Rarely did anyone from the central government contact him, for that matter rarely did anyone interfere in the affairs of local ruling or autonomy. The Confederacy was structured in such a way as to extend the responsibilities of governance among its states, and so on and so forth down the line until it would end with the very votes from its citizens. Only in matters of national defense and diplomacy did the central government attempt to enforce its purpose on those that chose to abide by it. Typically, no one argued, and very rarely was there ever a dispute that the Constitution could not solve. So it was that District Governor Robert Kane was faced with one such issue.

The 16th President of the Confederate States, duly elected, had just requested of him that he, Robert Kane, personally invite the representatives of the Ordenite Reich into talks to accommodate long overdue war reparations. War reparations that, when calculated, would possibly total in the billions. Billions that the District Governor did not have authority over.

Robert was no fool of history. He knew the significance of the presence of the Ordenites here in Pax Ghothica, not only for Anagonia but the region as a whole. It was a symbol of moving on, of celebrating a new future, and quite possibly establishing new trade relations. The only reason Robert had not spearheaded some sort of Anagonian delegation was the very fact that Anagonia had, in decades long past, been responsible for some very questionable war crimes on their soil. How they would take that or how they would interact with that knowledge was unknown, they probably very well had forgotten it, but the sins of past generations would always somehow cross over into the next. It was with that knowledge that he remained silent, as with the others, and duly surprised by the central council getting involved in the absence of any particular national involvement. He had just come out of a meeting with his advisory staff on how to move forward and possibly participate when he had received the call from the President.

Something in the back of Roberts mind told him that there was something suspicious going on. He had never particularly liked Franklin Johnson, nor his Vice-President, Edmond Goff - a notorious Fascist himself. Franklin was no better, hailing from the ranks of the Confederate National Party. Nothing had particularly set off any deep alarm bells in the District Governor in the years Franklin had reigned, although he had taken note of a more serious push for further militarization and space funding. This, however? Requesting that the process to hand over countless billions to a known practical Nazi state? That was a big red alarm bell.

Instead of picking back up the red phone and dialing the appropriate individuals, as was protocol, Robert instead dialed the Head Judge of the Unity District using a local line. The courts would be better to determine the necessity of war reparations, especially during such an auspicious - perhaps correctly stated as suspicious - occasion.
