Just as a note, anyone is allowed to join the discord, even if they haven't made an app yet. Might even be good for working on your app with others.

Observers are fine too, assuming they want to join at a later date while keeping track of the RP.

I mean, ironically, since Ecuador still allows opposition parties to run, the Union is probably fairly friendly toward it. As far as a lot of Yankee diplomats are concerned, this is a slightly eccentric South American democracy that needs protection against the integralist tide.

Now that you mention it, yeah, Ecuador stands in a very singular position in the world that might be interesting to explore. Though I have a feel Che would rather go Marxist one-party State and only goes along with the current system for pragmatic reasons.

Ecuador is clearly going to lead a Pacific empire. Bend to it before it breaks you.

For the next post I want to continue with Cimarro's investigation, and I'll reveal he's a foreign agent. Is whoever is playing the German Reich up for having one of their private cargo ships raided by Cuban special forces?

I'd say that the current Kingdom of Afghanistan might be similar to OTL China in terms of infrastructure and social development. Most urban areas being highly developed metropolises while more rural areas are dominated by the few illiterate tribes that have hold onto their old cultures.

NationStates Name - The Felan Federation

Nation Name - Kingdom of Afghanistan

Roleplay Example Link - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=459107 , viewtopic.php?f=31&t=459705

Capital - Kabul

Type of Government - Constitutional Monarchy

Head of State(s) - Azar Minu Khan

Image of Leader - Image

Party in Power - Solidarity Party of Afghanistan (Social Democrat)

Executive Title - King/Queen -- Malik/Melike ("Father/Mother of the Nation")

Demographics - ~18 million people

Flag - Image

National Anthem - "Our Brave And Noble King/Queen"

Public Goals - Continue modernizing the country, reduce tribalism, improve public and private sector.
Private Goals - Maintain sovereignty, reduce Soviet influence, reduce Islamic influence.

Total military size - 180,000 active, 200,000 reservist.
Breakdown of ground sector - Royal Afghan Armed Forces (150,000 active; 180,000 reservist), Royal Guard (20,000 active; 5000 reservist)
Breakdown of naval sector - N/A
Breakdown of airforce sector - Royal Afghan Air Force (100 planes; 10,000 personnel, 15,000 reservist)
Major foreign military suppliers - China, Soviet Union.
Extra military information - The Royal Guards act as a section of the military solely responsible for policing the civilian population and protecting the King.

Currency - Afghani
Major import/export partners - China, India, Soviet Union.
Major Domestic Issues - tribalism, underdeveloped rural regions of the country.
Major Foreign Issues - Radical-Leftist/Communist influence, Soviet Union expansion.

History - Afghanistan had remained a graveyard for Empires, a battlefield for the Great Game until they managed to achieve their independence from the British in 1919. Under Emir-then-Malik/King Amanullah Khan he begun to initiate reforms to bring Afghan into the modern age. Transforming social and educational reforms included: adopting the solar calendar, requiring Western dress in parts of Kabul and elsewhere, discouraging the veiling and seclusion of women, abolishing slavery and forced labor, introducing secular education (for girls as well as boys); adult education classes and educating nomads. His economic reforms included restructuring, reorganizing, and rationalizing the entire tax structure, antismuggling and anticorruption campaigns, a livestock census for taxation purposes, the first budget (in 1922), implementing the metric system, establishing the Bank-i-Melli (National Bank) in 1928, and introducing the afghani as the new unit of currency in 1923. The political and judicial reforms were equally radical for the time and included the creation of Afghanistan's first constitution (in 1923), the guarantee of civil rights (first by decree and later constitutionally), national registration and identity cards for the citizenry, the establishment of a legislative assembly, a court system to enforce new secular penal, civil, and commercial codes, prohibition of blood money, and abolition of subsidies and privileges for tribal chiefs and the royal family.

While achieving success within urban dwellers, most rural tribes resisted and opposed the reforms of King Amanullah. An attempt had been made against the King' policies during the Shinwari revolt by a Tajik leader, Habibullah Kalakani - although being killed in the Siege of Jabal al-Siraj - without his leadership, the biggest threat to the King' reforms had been destroyed and the tribal forces were soon dispersed. Thus allowing King Amanullah to continue his efforts to reform the country of Afghanistan into a modern state.

To prevent further attempts, King Amanullah had to pass concessions in exchange for limiting his reforms to urban areas - this would hamper the reforms from being wide-reaching, although in private, he would make every attempt to spread reform by persuasion or scheme whenever possible. This helped in reforming Afghanistan while reducing any further attempts from the tribes to further destabilize the country. He would abdicate rule to his son Crown Prince Rahmatullah in 1950 whom would continue the reforms set out by his father. Under King Rahmatullah, Afghanistan initiated even more modernization efforts in the rise of the Soviet Union as a world superpower and China regaining its stance as a regional power. Private companies were allowed to do business in the country, although under contracts that favored the government.

By 1985, when reign was passed over to the first Queen - King Rahmatullah' eldest, Azar Minu Khan - an example of the success the country has achieved. The reforms having managed to turn Afghanistan into a modern state, with most urban areas having achieved relative success in reaching Western levels of lifestyle and quality. Although there still remains several tribes in rural areas - that still live the old nomadic lifestyle and follow the old religious customs - even if the years had reduced their size. While the Soviet Union has increased it's attempts to spread communist and radical leftist propaganda through the country.

  • Due to Canada's French Heritage, it would love to see the French Union in the Commonwealth.

Total Military Size - 633,812 (Active), 2,082,535 (Reserve)
Breakdown of Ground Sector - 202,965 (Active), 710,829 (Reserve)

Extra Military Information -
  • Given that Canada is surrounded by nations larger than itself, the whole of Canada's Military focuses mainly on defensive, guerrilla, and survival tactics.
  • Canada doesn't have the opportunity to let any of the branches fall behind, and because of that all of the branches have roughly the same strength. The Navy would likely be ranked first, but given British Navy Tradition and the fact that Canada is a peninsula with several islands, that makes sense. After that, the Army and the Air Force are somewhat tied.
  • It should also be noted that nearly every Canadian over 18 has undergone military training, which is why the official numbers could be somewhat misleading.
  • Canada does run a Nuclear Weapons Program, although the locations of the missiles are not publically known.
  • Canada also runs three Antarctica Research/Military Bases and claims a piece of the Antarctic pie.

Major Domestic Issues
  • The upcoming General Election is sure to be one for the History Books.
  • Canada is quickly becoming a Majority-Minority Nation.
  • Quebec Nationalist, despite starting to die off, are still ever present.
Major Foreign Issues
  • Canada has a unique position geo-political. It's a member of the Commonwealth that borders a Comintern Nation, two Goldern Circle Nations, a Mitteleuropa Nation, a fellow Commonwealth Nation, and a Non-Aligned Nation Canada has Sphered. In short, Canada is at the center of a massive web, and every nation wants to pull Canada in their direction. It only becomes more complex when you consider the number of resources that Canada holds inside its borders.

The Dominion of Canada was born at a time of change. Inside the nation, people were demanding a better government and to the south, a country was at war with itself. Canada's first leader didn't bring these ideas to life. The British-appointed Governor General chose the leader of the Conservatives to lead the nation, John A. Macdonald. And with help from the non-population based voting system, he was allowed to be PM for the nation's first five years.

With help from the voters of British Columbia and Oregon, the Conservatives were forced out of power and replaced by the Liberals. Their leader, George Brown, was a man with two core beliefs, Reform and Anti-Quebec. His time as PM would have massive effects for the nation, he reformed the Westminister System into something more modern, he created many offices including the Supreme Court, and it hurt the French-Canadian identity anyway he could.

He was voted out of office thanks to Quebec voting for the Conservatives. After the failed assassination turned fatal infection of George Brown, the Conservatives were all but legally given one-party rule over Canada as the Liberals were in disarray for years. Many would say the Conservatives squandered this opportunity. They tried to increase the economy and failed due to their need for tariffs. They decided to build the Pacific Railway, and they did after putting down a rebellion and showed the government to be very corrupt. And they failed at getting Canadians to move to Western Canada. Come the 1892 and that all changed.

The Liberals had finally found their new leader, a seventh generation Quebecois, Wilfred Laurier. In Western and South Western Canada a new left-wing party, the Populists, headed by an American-Immigrant, William Jennings Bryan, were on the rise. Together they were able to get the Conservatives out of power. Laurier, who held the plurality in the House invited Bryan to form a Coalition with him. This Coalition would rule Canada til 1910.

They wanted to make Canada the preeminent world power. They needed the people for it, so they allowed immigration from pretty much every corner of the world. They needed the economy for it, so they worked to get a free trade deal with the UAS and/or the USA. They expanded the nation, buying Russian Alaska before the gold could be discovered and getting the British to give control of Newfoundland to Canada. They were more or less successful in those three goals, which lead them to add a fourth goal, build up Western Canada. By the time the government came to an end the Canadian population had nearly doubled, the economy had finally taken off after the near constant stagnation under a Conservative government, and the population was much more evenly spread out.

However, despite this success, over the years Laurier continued to get more and more unpopular in French and English Canada. By 1910 he was seen as a traitor in Quebec as he had let German immigrants settle in Quebec and the English Canadians started associating the more radical nature of the Quebecois with Laurier. Laurier's time as PM came to an end shortly after the start of the Great War, he had joined Canada in the war on the side of Britain, so a band of Quebec Nationalist broke into his home, hung him, and burnt it to the ground.

As Deputy PM, Bryan became PM as soon as the news had reached the Governor General. There was just this small problem. Pm Bryan was very much anti-war. The Governor General called for a snap election on the advice of the British Government. Although Bryan was less controversial than Laurier, he was unable to win reelection. He was elected to lead the Liberal Party, forming the Liberal-Populist Party, but shortly after he was elected a group split off, establishing what was known as, the Anglo-Liberal Party.

The Government that would lead Canada during the Great War was lead by the Conservatives in Coalition with the Anglo-Liberals. They put down a revolution before it could be called a revolution in Quebec and help win the war. Canada took Saint Pierre and Miquelon from France. After the war a snap election, the Conservatives and Anglo-Liberals joined into one party, the National Party and won a majority in Commons. The Government was somewhat mad at Britain for giving its Carribean possessions to the USA as Canada wanted that land.

The Election of 1919 saw the Liberal-Populists come back to power, this time led by William Lyon Mackenzie King. His Government is remembered for two things, starting the movement that would lead to complete independence from the UK and the Great Depression. Having been elected to his third term a few months before the economic crash, his handling of the crisis was a complete failure.

He was voted out of confidence in 1933, triggering a general election. The Conservatives won a plurality but were unable to form a coalition to govern the majority, so a second general election took place n 1933. This lead to a Coalition of the CCF, Reconstruction, and Social Credit governing. That Coalition was no longer needed after 1938 when the newly created Socialist Party was given the majority in Commons. The Socialist Party then held the office of Prime Minister from 1938 to 1963.

This proved to be a massive time of change in Canada. Under J.S. Woodsworth a gigantic "New Deal and Then Whole Lot More" welfare state was established. Along with that, he focused on connecting Canada in any way possible, rail, road, radio, air, etc. In the fall of 1940, he had a stroke, as his health continued to fail, the party elected its new leader, Ruth Bryan, daughter of PM Bryan.

Her focus was on the Canadian Identity and its Independence from the UK. Shortly into her tenure, she decided that Canada would not take part in the War with Japan. As there was an election soon after the war began and it looked like she wouldn't be elected, but shockingly the public agreed with her. She made it mandatory for children to learn both French and English from the beginning of schooling, and later ushered in official bilingualism. She allowed the ushered in universal suffrage for anyone above 18. She created Canadian Citizenship and became the First Canadian Citizen. After the announcement of the Heligoland Proclamation, she was able to negotiate with the British Government to free Canada completely. On July 1, 1952, the Dominion of Canada became the Confederation of Canada. She started the Canadian Nuclear Program. She would suffer a Heart Attack in 1954 and during her few days of living afterward the Socialist Party named M.J. Coldwell it's new leader.

He's remembered for one thing, introducing the National Conscription Act into law. Every Canadian who turns 18 before Septemeber of any given year is conscripted into the military and spends a year in the force, and is then given a choice if they want to stay or not. Designed to act as a binding force to create a more cohesive Canadian Identity, it has mostly worked out as intended. As a side note, it was during his time a PM Bermuda joined the nation. On to elections, Coldwell was never a good campaigner, and in 1963 he was going against the National Party's firebrand speaker. After 49 years, the National Party was back in charge.

One thing, Quebec Nationalism dominated Canadian Politics of the 1960s and '70s. In the aftermath of the Socialist Party making Canada officially bilingual, conservative elements of Quebec's society did not like that their children were forced to learn English. They saw the Socialist's attempt to make an actual Canadian Culture as an effort to kill the Quebecois Culture. They would form the party, Quebec libre (Free Quebec). Interestingly enough it has been part of every government besides the Socialist lead government in 1980-1985 since it's creation. Quebec libre used it's power as members of the governing coalition for years to give Quebec more and more power.

PM John Pietsch was a hardcore Conservative, and as such as not to most popular figure, he only lasted a single term. Interestingly enough, as a side effect of tax cuts enacted during his time as PM, the Vancouver and Seattle Flim Industries were able to take off massively, to the point where the Greater Vancouver-Seattle Area is the film capital of the world in the modern day. As of now, the area is becoming more and more silicon valley-like.

The next PM, George Franklin, was a great campaigner and ran one of the best campaigns in Canadian History to get into office. But, once there was a bit of a wet mop. Not to mention that his Coalition was nearly always on the brink of collapse as it was full of minor parties and he had already wrapped up in some personal scandals by the time he was up for reelection, and it becomes no surprise that he wasn't reelected.

In 1973, Dorothy Durand became PM for the first time. She has always been more of a Red Tory, which has both helped and hurt her popularity over the years. She was able to win reelection in 1978, however, in 1980, Quebec libre left her Coalition as she refused to let a bill that would of let Quebec be an autonomy area come to a vote. In the resulting General Election the Socialist Party, headed by a Quebecois, promised to allow Quebec to hold a referendum on if it wanted to be a nation.

Jacques Bouchard's time as the status of Quebec utterly dominated the PM. In Late 1980 the people of Quebec gave their government, by a very slim majority, the mandate to negotiate with the Government of Canada. Throughout five years, the two governments debated and debated and debated. In the end, they asked the people of Quebec to vote on the deal, which they gave a resounding no to, with nearly 60% voting No. Meanwhile, the rest of Canada was not so happy about Bouchard's Government even giving Quebec to option, and he was voted out in 1985.

Dorothy Durand was back in the PM's Office, becoming the second Canadian PM ever to hold the office non-consecutively. Due to her Red Toryism, the more conservative elements of her party started battling her just as much as she fought the opposition. Then, in 1987, the People's Party and Blue Tory Party were founded. As more and more members of her party joined, she had no other option, so she called for a Leadership Election in the National Party. The National Leadership Election is to occur in February, and the General Election is scheduled for June.

And so, the Canadian Experiment continues...

Spain is reserved and Canada is accepted. Not quite sure if you'd have so many Asians, though I understand the large percentage.

Also, both Australia and Canada are republics, meaning that only the U.K. and at best a few small countries are Commonwealth Realms F.

I mean, what did the UK expect exactly when they annexed American land?

As for the Asians, the majority of them have had family in Canada since before the 1920s. My general thinking was that the USA would probably still have passed the Chinese Exclusion Act and thus for a long period of time the only nation Asians could come to in North America would've been Canada.

I should note that the USA's initial integralist regime was anti-racist and anti-capitalist, ending slavery and killing or causing most of their oligarchs to flee. Until the more recent coup that brought on the second integralist regime, the government discouraged racism and had no oligarch presence unless you consider party politics.

Now, as has been alluded to, racism is creeping back in, and as are the nastier parts of capitalism, as a mostly white, conservative military is influencing the government. And of course, an Italian catholic would be discriminated against. All things considered, I wouldn't say segregation or oligarchy are as bad as the PM's cousin is describing yet. then again he's Italian, so he might have had too much pasta

Yeah, he might have probably eaten too much pasta, but he is not the King's cousin, he is the Prime Minister's cousin.
