The Independent Living movement

Postby All are Equal » Thu Feb 21, 2019 12:32 am

I'm physically disabled and my home state (MA) is having its annual rally at the state capital to celebrate the Independent Living movement. I'm curious if anyone here is familiar with it, and if it exists outside the USA.

The Independent Living movement was/is a movement to allow people with physical disabilities to live in their own homes and not need to live in an institutional environment. It only dates to the early '70s, so it's relatively new, but a vibrant, important, issue.

Op could use some links or something but I digress

Never heard of it but hey supporting the ability for the disabled to live freely rather than as the ass end of society is a net good I guess

Sadly, some disabled folk will never be able to be completely independent or even autonomous.

However, the notion that a disability shouldn’t spell an end to one’s independence should very much be encouraged.
