Is there anything glorious about war?

Postby Andsed » Wed Feb 20, 2019 7:41 am

So over in TET there was a discussion about dying for your country and glory during war time. And I figured I would make a thread about it. So NSG do y,all think there is any glory to be found in war?

Me I think think that is a ridiculous question. The only thing that could be considered ¨glorious¨ in war is the bravery of the soldiers. But we should not delude ourselves with ideals of glorious and honorable death for your country. It is not glorious to die for your country it is tragic and should be considered as such.

But that is just what I think so I ask you NSG. Do you think there is anything glorious about war?

War is nothing more than a disgusting act rooted in our animalistic nature and shouldn't happen in the first place.

But, sometimes it is necessary. When facing death, defending yourself and your home is a necessary evil.

is it tragic that tens of thousands died to free African Americans from slavery? yes it is tragic but it was necessary
is it tragic that hundreds if not thousands of African Americans and Native Americans and Asian Americans died during the many battles of WW2? yes but it was necessary
deaths in war are tragic but they are necessary in order to create a better future. plus no one said war is glorious its gritty and disturbing why do you think the phrase "War is Hell" is still thrown around.

The whole thing just seems pretty glorious to me

The uniforms, the sounds of all the weapons (tanks, firearms, aircraft, helicopters, mobile artillery), the camaraderie, the shouting of commands through radios, the killing etc

sure you could end up with the short end of the stick and die as soon as you enter the combat zone but that's what makes the whole thing unpredictable

serving on one of those massively powerful destroyers must be a fantastic experience (one of those things has enough firepower onboard to destroy an entire army probably if given the chance to fire first)...

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori

we never summon the devil

I don't think war is glorious. I think that it's sometimes it's unfortunately preferable to doing nothing, but "glorious"? Never.

When necessary, it's the tragic cutting short of lives. When unnecessary, it's shoving young people into a meat-grinder for no good reason.

That said, I have the greatest respect for soldiers. I think that, upon returning, they should be given all the support possible.

But diplomacy should always be the goal.

Two poems (those who've been in TET will have seen the second):

Who's for the Game?

Who's for the game, the biggest that's played,
The red crashing game of a fight?
Who'll grip and tackle the job unafraid?
And who thinks he’d rather sit tight?

Who'll toe the line for the signal to 'Go!'?
Who'll give his country a hand?
Who wants a turn to himself in the show?
And who wants a seat in the stand?

Who knows it won't be a picnic, not much,
Yet eagerly shoulders a gun?
Who would much rather come back with a crutch
Than lie low and be out of the fun?

Come along, lads—but you'll come on all right—
For there's only one course to pursue,
Your country is up to her neck in a fight,
And she's looking and calling for you.

DULCE ET DECORUM EST

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Only one had been to war. One guess as to which...

War is a cruel act of two politicians deciding it's time for territorial gains ( by the way i think all borders should be opened forever and all countries should share their economies but that's just me), it is dehumanizing, sadistic and brutal it does nothing but destroys a healthy person inside and outside, just look at soldiers that went back from wars, traumatized for rest of life at best, for me it is pointless and results in nothing.

The answer is no. Most wars entail mostly pointless deaths, and yes while many wars are justified, I wouldn't say that anything is glorious.
