That’s because in the event of alien contact, xenophobia would fucking skyrocket.

Not hard to see why considering for years in movies, comics and video games we've been led to believe that aliens will abduct and probe us, destroy our civilizations and use our bodies as living power generators.

If aliens are as bad as we are and reach us first it’s safe to say we’re looking at a mass genocide against humanity. That is, unless they ignore us or think we aren’t important enough to kill.

I really don't get why people are so fond of shitting on their own species.

Seems depressing.

Missions like Opportunity are far superior to human space missions in every way. We should continue to send probes into space and declare a permanent moratorium on sending humans into space. It's far more expensive, much less cost effective and sacrifices our best and brightest to the ridiculous notion of human colonization of other planets.

We're not going to control the pandemic!

It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.

Sacrifice is an inevitability of human exploration, and it is a sacrifice we must be willing to make.

Everyone is praising Oppy for what it was able to accomplish which is amazing... But don't forget those magnificent bastards over at N.A.S.A. and the other companies that put Oppy together. They deserve a major pat on the back for assembling such a rugged little bot!

You may want to do a rereading of Farewell to Arms in your future.

The arguments for staying on earth and keeping humanity on earth be it to protect people or to say there is no good reason to leave is only an argument in favour of a collective long drawn out suicide.

as opposed to, what, a quick suicide of a few chosen victims?

what would you call sending humans on a monthslong trip beyond the Van Allen belts where either 1) radiation will fry their brains, 2) their capsule will be turned into Swiss cheese and they will suffocate, 3) their heart muscles will atrophy, 4) all the O2 they create from plants (as if) will make the atmosphere so flammable they can't drop a fork without starting a fire, 5) venting the O2 with nothing to replace it; suffocation again, 6) the part they need to fix the machine that makes their air/water/food is on the resupply ship that takes off six months from now...if not

a collective long drawn out suicide

Curiosity's farewell to Oppy did it for me, the xkcd one just piled it on even more. :(

The dust storms and the fact that there is evidence that water once existed on mars, are some of my favorite parts of the planet. As for the Rover, this was bound to happen, especially when it significantly outlasts the time it was designed to operate.

It's a paraphrasing of the last bid of information the opportunity rover sent.
