MT Open: Socialist Party Holds Anti-Government Demonstration

Postby Peoples Cities » Tue Feb 12, 2019 5:49 pm

It was a sunny day in the Republic of Rinpek, the little city state had over 1.3 million inhabitants densely packed into the middle strip of land in the Rinpek Valley, surrounded by forested hills. Todays was special in that the opposition Socialist Party had gathered thousands in protest at the state of the government of the Democratic Centrist party which had ruled since the first multi-party elections in 1990, there was a mood for change. The Elections since 1990 were marked with irregularities so one could not call the process fair or free and it was this fact that was able to mobilize enough people for the largest demonstration since the demonstrations of 1989 that toppled 39 years of dictatorship.

Parliament Square

Thousands thronged the Rinpek CBD, making their way down Parliament Avenue towards the cities main Square. Chants of "Human need not corporate greed!" and "The Peoples have the power!" could be heard in nearby buildings. Curious bystanders also found themselves following the mob as they made their way towards Parliament Square. Many were waving red flags and banners that read "DOWN WITH CAPITALISM"

Before long the mob had arrived at parliament square, a few thousand made their way into the center of the square, some picketed before the government complex while more made their way towards the steps of the round parliament building. There was little in the way of a police presence, the demonstration was legal after all and there had so far been no orders to disperse the mob, while things were still peaceful.

At the steps of the parliament building, leader of the opposition and the socialist party, Peter Movek held up the loudspeaker to address the crowd

"Thank you to all those here today who could join us for this demonstration to say to the government of Prime Minister Harold Mursk that enough is enough! We are sick of the rigged elections, of the exploitation of the workers of Rinpek and sick of all the wealth of the city being funneled to fewer hands while the rest of us miss out on the prosperity!" with that the crowd cheered with some in the front chanting "Capitalism is crisis!" and "Socialism! Socialism! Socialism!"

Peter Movek continued on "Elections are later this year, we need to work tirelessly till then to ensure a change of government! Make sure you are all registered to vote and we will have our revolution at the ballot box!"

.......................................................................

Government Complex

Prime Minister Harold Mursk looked out the window at the crowd below who were chanting and waving red flags, he then turned back to face his cabinet ministers, looking at Justice Minister George Morgan "If there is any trouble down there I want the police ready to disperse them, put them on alert"

"Yes Prime Minister"

"There is starting to become a groundswell for change, I'm worried about the outcome of the election later this year" The Prime Minister paced across the conference room and took a seat at the sound table with the rest of the Cabinet ministers "This is the largest demonstration in a generation, what will the media coverage be like?" said Harold facing his culture minister James Monk

"We will dedicate a short segment to it in tonight's news, but I'm confident news of the event will go no further"

"And what about the Confederation of Labour's threats for a city wide strike?" asked Harold

One of the ministers spoke up "We are sure it was a threat and nothing more, the opposition does not have the coordination of unity to mobilize over 800,000 workers in a strike. Honestly Prime Minister, my advice is to continue as you are, this small groundswell of unrest will blow over and I'm confident we will win another term in office come the election"

"Is that so" Harold thought for a moment, hoping that nothing more would come of the opposition led anti-government demonstration

MON OF MAKI KOJIRO, SHOGUN OF THE EMPIRE OF GREATER NIFON

Honorable Authorities of the Republic of Pinpek;,

I am writing excellency, Kojiro-sama, the Shogun of the Empire of Greater Nifon who executes the Mandate of Heavenly Father on behalf of Her Augustness. Kojiro - sama is extremely concerned about the recent rise of socialism in Republic of Rinpek, fully aware that the prospect of rise of socialism threatens the well-being of the Nifonese economical interests.

On behalf of Kojiro-sama I would like to request from your excellencies an assertion of level of threat posed by those socialists, and their capability to actually take power - an outcome which would harm Nifonese interests greatly. Currently, the Army Security Corps is conducting it's own, independent investigation of the issue.

While the Shogunate firmly believes in the domestic capability of the Rinpek government to handle the issue on it's own, should the need arise, or Rinpekian government feels itself unable to rely on the local security measures, it is always welcome to contact Bushido Solutions LTD, which will eagerly provide qualified contractors to ensure proper security within the city.

At last, the Nifonese government would urge the Rinpekian government to handle the matter in accordance with the universally accepted laws of ethics, knowing that not adhering to such laws will most likely only generate more support to the dishonorable aka and boost the power of the Archenemy of Nifon.

Honor guide you,

To: Tokugawa Asuka Minister of External Affairs from the Empire of Nifon
From: Prime Minister Harold Mursk of the Republic of Rinpek

Thank you for your message of concern. The Republic of Rinpek is scheduled to hold multi-party elections in the second half of this year 2019 in which the Socialist Party among others are able to contest. Since the ruling Democratic Centrist party has been in power since 1990, and elections have not always been the freest, this has created a mood for change. While we still rank our chances of winning the election as high, there is still the chance that the Socialists could be elected and rule in coalition with the Green party and perhaps some other leftwing parties that form between now and the election. We will certainly keep our eye on the situation. May 1st may see some larger demonstrations typical for international May Day, but other then that the demonstration passed peacefully with no further disruptions.

Thank you once again for your concern
Kind regards
Prime Minister Harold Mursk

Central Rinpek

As the last of the demonstrators dispersed and dusk fell over the city, soon turning to night, the leader of the opposition socialist party, Peter Movek returned to his apartment in the city center. Media reporting on the demonstration was severely lacking, with what seemed like a few minutes footage and a sound bite before moving onto a report of a brown bear that was sighted in Ocean View neighborhood.

"This is bloody pathetic!" Spat Peter, he turned to one of his fellow socialist party parliamentarian "This is the Prime Minister's doing, he would rather the media report on a bloody bear then the largest demonstration in three decades, I shouldn't be surprised"

"His Cabinet are probably worried about giving us too much coverage, they don't want to accept things are worse then they seem" said Lena, a women of 29 and one of the youngest parliamentarians in Rinpek.

Peter brushed back his black hair with his finger and walked over to the window, looking down on the streets below. It was almost 11pm yet the city was still busy with activity with people out walking, jogging and visiting pubs and bars

"The next opportunity for a large demonstration won't be till May day, that will give us at least another two months of preparation" he said

"I contacted John Jones, he's certain the Industrial Workers Union will strike but is not confident the Commercial Workers Union will"

"It's time Prime Minister Mursk saw a true display of people power, we could try and push for early elections..... But with the Democratic Centrists holding a majority in parliament its unlikely that will happen. That is unless we can get people to turn out in the streets. In any case we should start preparing for the election later this year"

Lena nodded though she had a look of uncertainty about her

"Lena is something on your mind?"

"The Democratic Centrists have been in power for 29 years, I'm not confident their going to hold free and fair elections, they will resort to their usual tactics of stuffing ballots and enrolling the dead, after all this is not a real democracy, not to mention the meddling of foreign governments that are hostile to the prospect of a socialist win"

"We will have to jump those hurdles when we come to them, until then we should focus on the May day demonstration in a few months time and do everything we can to get our message out there"

Prime Minister Harold Mursk put the letter down on his desk. He was surprised that the demonstrations had gained some international attention from an anti-socialist state as well as from a socialist/communist state, he wondered who else may have taken notice of the demonstrations. Harold stood up and paced over to the window and looked down across Parliament Square. To his right he could see the gleaming white columns and round dome roof of the parliament building and to his left on the other side of the square was the gleaming white columns of the Henry Smitt mausoleum. He turned back to his desk to formulate a reply

TO: Commissariat of Foreign Affairs Spiridon Ignatyev
From: Prime Minister Harold Mursk

Thank you for the message, but the future of Rinpek will take place at the ballot box in elections scheduled later this year. While the demonstration was large, it was peaceful and there has been no follow up unrest with the situation returning to calm. As for the Opposition Socialist Party, they are currently congregated in the Convention Center holding a party congress to elect their party central committee
https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=459727

Once again we reaffirm that the future of the country will be decided democratically at the ballot box, and as for early elections we can consider it only if the circumstances change drastically.

Regards
Prime Minister
Harold Mursk

Meanwhile at the Rinpek Convention Center

Peter Movek the current leader of the Socialist Party was presiding over the hall of delegates giving a speech about yesterday's demonstrations

"As usual the government did not listen, I'm glad for the turnout at the demonstration, it was the biggest demonstration since 1989 but I am not surprised the media swept the whole thing under the rug, they are clearly worried we might cause them an upset at the election later this year. In Anycase we must now focus on our own election for a party central committee that will determine the path the party is set on for the next five year plan"

With that the hall burst into applause

Harold Mursk sat at his desk pouring through documents showing various folders and documents to do with the state of the economy. Just then a phone on his desk began to ring. Harold picked it up

"Hello Harold here"

'Yes Prime Minister, your Finance Minister Liam Armstrong and Chairman of the Central Bank Lionel Red are here to see you with updates on the economy'

"Ah good, send them in"

Within a few moments the double doors to his office opened and two men entered. Lionel Red was 59 years old, was bald with a few wisps of white hair and sagging jowls while the 48 yearold Liam Armstrong looked quite youthful in comparison with his hair dyed dark brown. The two sat before Prime Minister Harold Mursk and handed over documents each

"So you have the latest figures for the state of the economy?" he asked

Finance Minister Liam Armstrong spoke first "Yes, in short it's doing very well. We are currently operating with a $1.14 Billion surplus, unemployment out of the entire population is at 6.67%"

"That's a bit high, what about the real rate of unemployment?" asked Harold

"It's more like 9.19%"

"Hmmm, its no wonder the Socialists are gaining traction, how many people are on welfare?"

"A little under 89,000"

"Well alright then, back to this budget surplus I take it the surplus is now sitting in the Central Bank?" Harold said, turning to Lionel

"Yes Prime Minister, the surplus has been deposited into the government accounts and as per our 50% reserve banking system, half of that can be re-invested in the economy in the form of loan-able funds"

"Ok well that's good news" Harold turned back to Liam "And our biggest expenses?"

"We still have a considerable trade deficit, imports are our largest expense followed by pension payments"

"Ah yes, well there is nothing much we can do about the trade deficit as pretty much all of our food is imported, the other way around that would be to open up some of the national park in the surrounding mountains to farming but the land is not arable and is too mountainous, not to mention the uproar from the Green Party and environmentalists, as for Pensions that is another expense that we can do nothing about, with life expectancy sitting at 90 our people are living longer the ever before but we are still a decade or so away from the demographic time bomb of becoming a super aged nation"

Liam spoke up "Mr Prime Minister, budget cut's are not what is needed at this time, like I said we are operating with over one billion in surplus, but there are some things we can do to optimize economic performance"

"Oh?"

"The State Electrical Company is highly profitable, but we could get a sizable paycheck from privatization and our train and subway network is under performing, perhaps privatizing those too"

"Hmmm, its a risky move, it could anger the socialists and drive them to further action" said Lionel

Liam spoke up once again "It's an option, perhaps the electrical company is a step too far but the Train and Subway system for sure could certainly use a shake up"

"Well lets just focus on the good news about the budget surplus, once we get that information out there the people wont be able to question our good financial stewardship of the city" said Harold

Liam and Lionel both nodded

"Any news on how the Socialist Party congress is going?" asked Harold

"Not a clue, I kind of hope they end up swinging further to the left, that way it will be much easier to influence people in the election not to vote for loony radicals" said Lionel

Prime Minister Harold Mursk made his way into the Cabinet room which was a round room of wood paneling wall's and in the center was a round table which sat all the ministers of cabinet. Harold was the last to arrive where he took his seat sitting next to his Finance and and Foreign minister.

"Right, shall we begin?" he said, getting comfortable in the black leather swivel chair, he placed some manila folders on the table before him and opened it up to the economic statistics that had been presented to him by his Finance minister and central bank chairman the day before "Just a brief update that the economic system is improving and we are working with a $1.1 Billion surplus, however unemployment is still much higher then we would like. As for the large demonstration a few days ago, things have returned to business as usual and at present the opposition Socialist Party is holding their party congress as we speak. The event did attract some international attention from a communist country which called on us to hold early elections, there was also some attention from an anti-communist country that offered some security help should things turn ugly" at this there was some chatter among the cabinet ministers

The Minister of foreign affairs Mark Bursted spoke up "There is no need for any concern, nothing serious has come of the socialist demonstration, but we should expect some large demonstrations and possible strikes on May Day"

Prime Minister Harold then spoke "Yes, we have it on good authority that the socialists will plan more larger demonstrations on or around May 1st, but the elections will go as usual. We are thinking of possibly holding the elections on November 1st. Anyway moving on to the next topic, I was in discussions with Liam Armstrong and Lionel Red yesterday discussing our options for the economy, one option we discussed was possible privatization of the subway and train network due to their poor performance and failure to attract the level of usage needed to be profitable"

Warren Greenhill the Trasport Minister then spoke up "Is privatization really a wise move in an election year and while the Socialists are as popular as they have ever been?"

"Mmm that's a good point" spoke up another Cabinet minister

"Yes point taken. Its a move we don't have to do this year but some privatization should be part of our agenda after the election should we win" replied Harold

Justice Minister George Morgan then spoke up "A large crackdown on crime and more police stations will be the Conservative Party platform, from surveys many citizens rank the city as not very safe, there have been over 7 violent murders last year and theft, drugs and prostitution were the highest ranking crimes as well as vandalism"

"From what I gather the Socialist Party want to decriminalize prostitution" replied Harold

"Bloody disgusting, even more reason to keep them out of power" spat George

"The corner of Castle Avenue and Drifter Street is particularly seedy, its pretty much an established red light district, so what are the police doing about it?" asked Harold

George began his reply, a look of disgust on his face "There are four police stations but they are not big enough for the number of police we have, we need to build at least another four more stations to close the gaps in police coverage of the city"

The Cabinet meeting continued as the ministers discussed how each of their departments went

We must politely decline the campaign funding due to some conflict of interest and the possibility it could lead to a foreign meddling scandal, but we would greatly accept opening up relations between our two parties. Thank you for your message of support. We have elections scheduled for November of this year and are confident we will win. We have let the socialists scream into the wind and have deemed no further action necessary as they are the largest opposition party in the Rinpek Republic. Parliament opens up on Monday and it will be business as usual for our democracy. At present the Socialists are currently holding their party congress for elections for their central committee. If we were to take any action such as banning them we are almost certain their would be widespread revolt and unrest, for this reason we have allowed their existence for the time being

Richard had left the demonstration early. The spy regretted it, he wasn't sure if he had won the trust of those young demonstrators, but it was necessary. The young socialists could be his contact to the more radical and militant activists, however his meeting with the union representative couldn't be missed, and he had to pick up his suitcase first.

Not only was the contents of his suitcase to valuable to bring into the crowd, it would hardly inspire trust. A smile went over his face as Richard thought of the irony. The very means with which he planned to help them would have marked him as an enemy.

The suitcase only carried a small amount of cash, relatively speaking. In the scheme of things, the whole amount he was to deliver rather small. About 2 million NSD, 7/8s of which was to be wired to various accounts. Hardly enough to fund a general strike for more than a few days. Cynic he was Richard doubted most of it would reach the striking workers. Hey, it wasn't like it was his money anyway.

Central Rinpek
Rinpek University

Leader of the Socialist Party Peter Movek made his way through the old brick buildings of the Rinpek University Campus. He had scheduled a meeting with leadership of the Professors Union which was made up of 646 professors that taught at the University and city colleges and were seen as the intellectuals of the city. It was not long before he entered the central main building of the campus and up a flight of stairs to a small waiting room. A few students who recognized Peter stopped to talk and express their support for the Socialist party and their voting intentions for the election later this year. It was true that the Socialist Party enjoyed strong support among students.

after ten minutes of waiting in the small waiting room Peter was let into an office of the university chancellor.

"Greetings Mr Movek how can I help?" said the large round man, Peter stepped into the office and made his way to a chair while the university chancellor made his way to his desk

"Well Chancellor I was hoping to see if the Professors Union would be interested in a public show of support for the Socialist Party or a public critique of the ruling Democratic Centrists"

"What sort of public support? A few of our members did attend the demonstration"

"Perhaps some sort of declaration condemning the inequality, high unemployment rate and rigged elections? The people respect the professors and intellectuals and it is clearly time for change in government" replied Peter

"Hmm I have a few colleagues that are already working on a few articles critical of current government policy, perhaps there are a handful of other colleagues that would be interested in collaborating on some sort of public declaration of support for the Socialist party" said the Chancellor

"That sounds great, the Democratic Centrists have been in power for 29 years and are a legacy of the Henry Smitt era, it is certainly time for a change, a change that is more people centered rather then the right wing profit driven society we live in currently" Finished Peter, at this the Chancellor nodded

As usual Prime Minister Harold Mursk was the last to arrive to the cabinet office which contained the wood panels walls and the round table which sat the various cabinet ministers. On the way to his seat he gave his trade minister a pat on the back "So I believe Mr Damis has some good news"

"Yes, we have just secured our main trade partner for the year 2019, a yearlong contract to replace the existing trade arrangements that were set to expire" replied Ryan Damis the trade minister, Prime Minister Mursk then sat in his chair

"So continue" he said

"New Edom has agreed to export to us $10 Billion worth of agriculture, fuel and industrial goods for the year 2019 which will fulfill our needs as well as allow us to export our goods worth $3.5 Billion, that will keep us going for the rest of the year, the contract can also be renewed once it expires in early 2020"

"New Edom?" spoke up Mark Bursted the foreign minister "Can they be relied upon? Aren't they in the midst of a crisis, and how will the press handle us doing business with a state with fewer human rights then us?"

Prime Minister Mursk was quick to respond "They are a large country not without their fair share of problems but I'm confident we can rely on them for trade"

"But Making them our sole trading partner, isn't that putting all our eggs in one basket?"

"It is only for one year, should things go awry we can always negotiate new trade deals, but I'm confident with their current troubles the deal is beneficial for us even if it still leaves us with a $6.5 Billion dollar trade deficit" replied Ryan Damis

"But the press, and the Socialist Party?"

"Parliament opens back up tomorrow and I'm sure the opposition will continue to criticize us for everything wrong under the sun like they usually do, but nothing with change" said Prime Minister Mursk

"Promoting LGBTQI rights is part of the Socialist Party agenda, they won't like us doing business with a state that has and is actively suppressing the rights of sexual minorities, it could generate more sympathy for the Socialist cause" spoke up Rina Imesk the Education minister

"This isn't cause for worry, we have just secured an important trade deal and our position is one of neutrality and non-interference in the domestic politics of another sovereign state, now lets move onto the next order of business" abruptly ended Harold Mursk before making himself more comfortable in his chair and moving on "How is the subway expansion going?" He said turning to his transport minister Warren Greenhill

"We have expanded the line to the Ocean View neighborhood as well as have plans to begin expanding more lines in central and north district, this should help increase passenger usage but it will cost a few hundred million" Replied Warren

"Well there is over $1.1 Billion in the government accounts from the budget surplus, from what I understand $600 Million has been made available on the market as state loans from the Central Bank, the other $500 million can be put towards transport infrastructure in the form of a subway expansion" said the Harold, The finance minister Liam Armstrong looked uncomfortable at this "Is there a problem Liam?"

"What does this mean for the plan to privatize the subway system?" Said Liam

"I got the latest poll figures and privatization is not a popular idea, perhaps it will work for the railway lines which I am still committed to do, but most respondents believe that the subway system needs greater investment and expansion to be truly effective"

The Cabinet meeting went on like this for another hour before the ministers went back to their offices to administer each of their departments. Prime Minister Harold Mursk went back to his office that overlooked Parliament Square. Before he had time to settle into his chair the phone on his desk rang, he picked it up almost immediately

'Mr Prime Minister your wife is here to see you'

"I'll be right out" Harold put the phone down and headed out of his office into the small waiting room outside where his secretary was busy behind a desk. Harold's wife was in her lat 40's, dyed brown hair done up in a perm.

"Maggie, what brings you here, is everything alright?" Holding her close and giving her a peck on the lips, she looked slightly shaken

"Some bloody protestors were picketing outside the house, I felt uncomfortable being there so I left and one of them threw a tomato or something at the car, isn't their anything you can do about them?"

Harold smiled "I'll get the police onto it and have them issued with trespass notices"

"They were on the sidewalk"

"In any case I'll have them removed and increase security"

"Thank you dear"

"While we do not hold the hatred or animostiy towards Socialism or even Communism for that matter that some nations do, we find it to be a dangerous trend and we find the path that is promoted by these movements are dangerous and usually illogical, we find these demonstrations as laughable, the struggle between socialism and capitalism is a problem that God has graced out country with never facing, but we condemn the Socialist Movement of Rinpek and the government to a lesser extent, we will hold off from further stances for now and will watch the situation unfold."

Parliament

A session of the 100 seat parliament was underway with the leader of the opposition Socialist Party launching into a scathing attack of Prime Minister Mursk and his Democratic Centrist party.

"We have the figures with real unemployment at 9.19%, with 88,988 stuck on a measly benefit which see's them live on $5,200 a year. Now I ask have any of you ever tried to live on $5,200 for a year? With the rising cost of living this is not possible! More people are considered 'low wealth' with more in poverty, meanwhile a little over 7% of the population enjoy the opulence of being 'high wealth'.
All the while the government of Prime Minister Mursk considers introducing neoliberal economics in privatizations and the long discredited idea of trickle down economics! We know from experiences around the world that neoliberalism widens the wealth gap with new records set in inequality among the people. Various studies from around the world also show that the more unequal a society is, the more social ill's the society has to contend with. Well thank god for an election later this year because this is the year the people see through the disaster that is this government, if the election is genuinely free and fair, then the Democratic Centrists will be out of office!" Peter Movek was fired up slamming his hand on the desk before him before taking his seat. The Opposition MP's cheered and applauded.

The government benches looked unconvinced with some even rolling their eyes at Peter Movek. Prime Minister Mursk then stood up "Well after that animated monologue from the opposition, lets have a closer look at the facts which show our government has brought a decent and high standard of living for all of our people. The Democratic Centrist party is the bearer of the legacy of Henry Smitt our late leader and founder of our great city. It was him who steered Rinpek into an era of prosperity and it is us who inherited this great city after his death, which we have continued to deliver prosperity year after year! Meanwhile the socialists march in the streets like a bunch of lunatics that threaten to bring to a swift end the prosperity that has been delivered by us...." At this the opposition benches broke out into some jeering with calls of "Liar!"

Prime Minister Mursk was silent as he waited for the opposition to calm down before continuing on "I think you will find that come the election, the people will continue to place their trust in us, as for the opposition I think you will find the people will see through the disaster that is the Socialist Party!" Prime Minister Mursk then sat down as the opposition jeered and Booed while the government benches applauded Prime Minister Mursk

Night time had fallen over the city, its buildings and street lights lit up across Rinpek. It was quarter to 11 at night and the city was still busy, humming with activity as people frequented pubs and clubs, though being in the middle of the week it was not as busy as the weekend. However the city was densely populated and 1.3 million people crammed into the small land area which made up the city state always made the streets quite busy no matter the time or day.

Prime Minister Mursk leaned back in his leather swivel chair and sighed. He had just finished reading a report compiled by his Justice Minister of the large scale protests and strikes planned and organized by the opposition on May 1st. In private polling the ruling Democratic Centrist party was beginning to lag behind the opposition Socialist Party.

'Not good' he thought as he slid the report away from him. The Socialists had been able to galvanize more support then he realized, he would have to be careful of what issues his government was going to pursue in an election year, one wrong move could see more support flock to the Socialists. Privatizations would have to wait as they were deeply unpopular with the populace.

May 1st was still over a month away, and the election was not scheduled until November at the latest, perhaps if things got worse he could move the date forward, get the election over the done with and make sure there were special arrangements to assure a victory for the Democratic Centrists, or at the least, pressure the media to begin a campaign against the Socialist Party. Harold Mursk grabbed out his planner book and began flicking through it to see what date he could hold early elections should he decide to move the election date forward. 'Hmmm perhaps June or July?'

Peter Movek exited his apartment building where the media were snapping pictures and his supporters cheered and clapped. The results had been counted up in the VII Party Congress Elections

and had seen Peter Movek's socialist faction gain the largest share of seats within the Socialist Party Central Committee at 41%, followed by the Social Democrats 36% and lastly the Communists with 23%

Peter was all smiles as his assistants conveyed the results and his political allies within the Socialist Party announced that they would support him for another term as Party General Secretary, which Peter Expected.

"I'd like to thank all my supporters and for all of the 112,000 party members who cast their vote in the party congress election. Now we can focus on contesting the general election later this year where we take down the government!" at this Peter's supporters cheered once again as the media continued to snap pictures

Prime Minister Mursk was watching the wall mounted TV in his office which was showing live footage of Peter Movek leaving his apartment. Finance Minister Liam Armstrong was sitting in the office with PM Mursk

"Well it's confirmed then, Peter Movek will be the Socialist Party challenger in the general election" said Liam

Harold Mursk had a look of concern on his face "He's young, handsome and gaining in popularity, this is not good for us"

Liam shrugged "The Socialists won't win, we have plans for the election to ensure that"

Harold flicked the TV off with a remote and turned to Liam "These elections will be heavily scrutinized, the people are aware of past irregularities we have employed to ensure victory for the Democratic Centrist party, and with the Socialist Party gaining traction in the polls it will be dangerous for us to rig the result, I'm afraid I do not feel comfortable rigging the elections this time around"

"Then you will hand Rinpek to the Socialists"

"You don't think we can win against them in a fair and free election?" asked Harold

"Incumbency is a hindrance in our case, the people want change and so far the Socialist Party is the only alternative to us"

Prime Minister Harold Mursk gulped back a glass of whisky, he had a slight buzz on from the amount he had been drinking this afternoon, mulling his options when the phone on his desk began to ring. Harold picked it up.

"Hello"

'Mr Prime Minister, President John Serak is here'

"Send him in" replied Harold before hanging up the phone, within moments the 69 yearold President walked in and sat opposite the Prime Minister

"Would you care for some whisky?" asked Harold pouring some more into his glass

"No thank you" replied the president. The man was known for his clean living after all "You summoned me?"

Harold took a gulp from his glass "I've been mulling over the option of holding a snap election to finally nip this socialist problem in the bud"

The president was taken aback "But, Harold be realistic! That wouldn't give us much time to prepare"

"It wouldn't give the socialists much time to prepare either" said Harold, his words sounded slightly slurred

"Well don't make any decisions while your drunk"

"I'm not drunk, I've only had a few glasses and anyway, things arn't looking so good for us in the polls"

"Even more reason not to hold snap elections" the president was firm

"Things will only get worse, come May 1st the streets will be thronged with their supporters, we have been losing in the polls and each new poll is coming with a worse result. Peter Movek is now a few points from beating me as the preferred Prime Minister" Harold took another gulp of whisky

"I urge you Harold to hold off on such a drastic course of action. Perhaps what we need is an aggressive campaign to attack the socialists in the media while promoting the achievements of the administration" the president had a calming tone which made Harold feel at ease

"hmmm maybe...." Harold finished his glass of whisky before pouring himself another "Are you sure you didn't want any?"

"Positive. How's Maggie?" replied the President changing the subject

"My wife is not having a good time, she feel's harassed by protestors, its taking a toll on her and on our marriage"

"I see"

The two men sat across from one another before the president spoke up once more "Do not call early elections, we have everything under control"

"If you say so, but just be prepared to dissolve parliament at a moments notice. If our support continues to decline I will have no choice but to call for early elections"

"Harold there is always a choice...."

Central Rinpek
Parliament Building

The session of parliament was particularly fiery as opposition from the Socialist MP's took turns attacking the government from the high rate of unemployment, the pitiful pension and benefit rates and the legitimacy of the last election in 2015.

Peter Movek stood up "This government has been a disaster for our democracy and we now have concrete evidence of voting irregularities in the 2015 election!" The government benches jeered and booed as Peter Movek continued to on "Four polling stations had double enrollment of government supporters and I have seen cellphone footage of ballot stuffing to give the Democratic Centrists an edge in the election!"

"Objection! There is no such proof! the opposition is making this up!" stood up the Finance Minister Liam Armstrong

"The election was stolen! Admit it! The only correct course of action is to hold fresh elections immediately!" continued Peter

The parliament chamber erupted into calls from both sides of the chamber before the speaker called for order allowing Peter to continue

"The crimes of the Democratic Centrists is not new, its common knowledge the elections have not been entirely fair and free since the first multi-party elections in 1990! The people are becoming more and more aware of how criminal this government is and its time for real change!"

The Prime Minister Harold Mursk then stood up to address the comments coming from the opposition "The paranoid ravings of the opposition are not new either....." At that the opposition MP's began booing and jeering before the speaker once again called for order allowing the Prime Minister to continue "The people have full faith in our administration and in the Democratic Centrist party which is why we have won the elections. As for the so called proof of voter irregularities well these are all just lies. I can say for certainty should the Socialists win then elections would all but be abolished which is all the more reason why people have trust in us"

Peter Movek stood back up "The people's trust in you is something you have taken for granted leading to a state of affairs that see the gap between the rich and poor widen, and more corruption and moneyed interests gain their tentacles into the organs of power! I re-affirm my call for fresh early elections as soon as possible"

The session of parliament went on as the opposition became more scathing in their attacks forcing the government MP's on the defensive. Parliament was often filmed and broadcast on the news channel when the chamber was on session allowing the citizens to watch what happened in parliament. The result was that many citizens would see the Democratic Centrist party under constant attack.

A few hardcore activist types continued to protest and picket outside the houses and offices of senior government officials and the media had already caught wind of the truth about the last election. Despite government pressure the media was already beginning to report on the voting irregularities and it seemed even the media was starting to turn against the government....

Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Orion Islands

The Government of the Republic of the Orion Islands hereby condemns the foreign assistance offered to the Socialist Party of Rinpek. Although we are aware of certain irregularities in the last election, we believe that the election was mostly free and fair and that the Government ruling Rinpek now is legitimate. We have experienced many armed struggles with socialism in the past, and our citizens have endured the crimes of socialist occupation armies. Our citizens have been killed by socialist sponsored attacks across the Islands. We must not outwardly intervene, but to ensure that democracy is respected and that Rinpek does not fall to socialism, we will offer the ruling government the presence of a team of election observers from the Orionite Electoral Commission to protect the votes integrity and ensure that dirty tricks by either side do not occur. We are also offering a 100 man team of Orionite Bureau of Investigation guards to ensure that if protests become violent, they will be handled. We fear for the very existence of democracy in Rinpek, and we will do our utmost best to protect it.

TO: Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Orion Islands
FROM: Mark Bursted Foreign Minister for the Republic of Rinpek

Thank you for your message of support for our government. We will happily accept Orionite election observers to monitor the elections and make sure they are free and fair. However we will decline the offer of foreign security forces in the borders of Rinpek at this time. The Demonstrations and protests have been peaceful this far and should things turn violent we have police and military forces at our disposal which we will not hesitate to use should the demonstrations become violent.

As for the existence of democracy in Rinpek, we are quite confident that Democracy will be preserved, the leader of the opposition Socialist Party Peter Movek has been a champion of 'Democratic Socialism' since he became party general secretary and as far as we are aware the Socialist Party is committed to our system of parliamentary democracy. For the time being we will continue to have faith in our democracy and hope that the people vote the right way come election day

Kind Regards

Prime Minister Harold Mursk called for an emergency session of Cabinet to discuss the revelations in the media of vote rigging in the last election as well as the deteriorating support for the government.

"Well, the time has come I will be meeting with President Serak later today for an important announcement.... It's time..." he started before the Education Minister Rina Imesk shook her head

"No.... You can't be serious" she said, other ministers looked concerned or confused

"Yes, I will be calling on the president to dissolve parliament and that snap elections will be held...." continued the Prime Minister

"But Prime Minister! I urge you to reconsider" started George Morgan the Justice Minister

"No! I've had it with the constant attacks from the opposition, if they are as popular as they think they are then the issues we face will be sorted one way or another"

"But Harold, surely there is no need for this, the situation is..."

"It's serious, we could face criminal charges and an open rebellion by the populace because someone leaked about our election practices" replied Harold

The Finance Minister Liam Armstrong then spoke up "Have you lost your wits? An early election at this time could see us defeated, then we really will face criminal charges over the last election!"

"Get the president on the phone and call a press conference immediately!" said Prime Minister Harold, annoyed at his cabinet ministers

"But Prime Minister!"

"No buts! I'm going ahead with it and no one will change my mind"

Two hours later

A press conference was quickly called. As the Prime Minister and President walked up to the podium the media all shouted over each other to get a question in before Prime Minister Mursk hushed them down

"I have summoned the president to dissolve parliament and hold snap elections...." Before he could continue the room of journalists jostled and yelled for some answers before President John Serak stepped forward

"As President of the Republic of Rinpek, I officially announce the dissolution of parliament and for multi-party elections to take place 60 days from now...." Again the room erupted into calls by the journalists, the Prime Minister then stepped forward

"I will take questions now, ah yes you in the blue over there"

"Jim Irons from the Republic Dispatch, do these snap elections have anything to do with allegations of vote rigging during the last election?"

"The allegations of vote rigging are entirely false, a fabrication from the Socialist Party to discredit us and no early elections have nothing to do with it......" More calling ensued by the room of journalists before the Prime Minister pointed out another "You there"

"Elena Purma here from the Morning Advocate. The media is said to have received evidence from the vote rigging by insiders in your own government can you respond to that?"

"We have no leakers here and once again the vote rigging allegations are a fabrication of the Socialist Party, next question" He said pointing to another journalist

"Jeff Moriss from the Rinpek Daily, Is the government worried about its chances in the election considering the decline of poll ratings and the rise of Peter Movek as preferred Prime Minister?"

"I am not aware of such poll and my government is not worried in the slightest, we are confident the people will choose wisely come election day... That's all the questions for today"

"Mr Prime Minister one more question!" yelled a journalist before both the President and Prime Minister left the press room. In the hallway the President John Serak stopped the Prime Minister

"Harold, I hope you know what you are doing, this stunt of yours could cost us all dearly"

"We will win the election I assure you of that" said Harold confidently before continuing back to his office
