Green Free Market

Postby Pria Valdera » Mon Feb 11, 2019 2:53 pm

I saw the Green New Deal as proposed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and wanted to try my hand at a free market based response. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list of what it will take to save the environment. It will probably take more than this. This is merely a proposal that seeks to cut emissions and preserve personal and economic freedom.
A global carbon tax on carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere set at $15 per ton of CO2 more than 150,000 tons. Carbon that is captured and sequestered will not be taxed. The cap will be reduced by 15,000 per year until it hits zero. Only goes into effect when China, India, and Russia agree to do the same.
-Create a carbon farming tax credit for those who use carbon farming techniques to reduce carbon emissions.
-Create a livestock feed additive tax credit to reduce methane emissions.
-Reduce farm subsidies by 50% starting in 2021 for those who do not carbon farm and use feed additives for cattle that they have.
-Create a tax credit for nuclear and renewable energy at $10 million per 1,000 MW, cost about $1.5 billion a year.
-Increase US spending on nuclear fusion research from $120 million per year to $240 million per year.
-Privatize social security to give the US more financial flexibility to address climate change. Limit US involvement in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, modernize medicare cost sharing, reduce prescription drug costs and allow private plans to compete with medicare. Reduce federal worker retirement benefits especially politician pensions. Impose a 3% excise tax on marijuana in states where it is legal.
-Raise the cap on the electric vehicle tax credit to the first 250,000 cars sold.
-Open electric markets to competition.

Global? I don't see why the EU should do what China, India and Russia agree to do, especially since they and the US always have benefitted of lax environmental regulation, or just avoided signing any binding agreement on carbon emission.
Also, good luck having China and India accept to be taxed exactly the same amount as economies who have three to five times their GDP/capita.

-Privatize social security to give the US more financial flexibility to address climate change.

Yay, more inequality and poverty for the US!

Seriously. I don't know why you hate Americans that much.

What I mean by global is that the tax would only go into effect if other countries adopted it as well. This thread is not meant to be a debate on the merits of privatizing social security, so in the interest of closing debate on this topic before it begins I reaffirm my statement that it would lessen the future financial burden on the us government and will leave it at that.

This subsidy cut wouldn't affect anyone who starts carbon farming and/or feed additives. Oh, and also there are tax credits to help them cover the cost of switching. Reducing pension sizes for career politicians that make over 150k a year doesn't exactly seem like an idea that will break the country. First time I've been called a socialist for wanting to cut spending in some areas.

That's the problem you want to cut subsidies to people who won't do it therefore your putting them out of business because they won't reduce carbon emissions which is wrong. Plus if I were a career politician why should I have my pension deliberately reduced to help fund a "green" policy that won't work? If you want it like this how about you lead by example and have your pension or retirement income cut and see how it "won't" affect you.

Global nationalisation of the meat industry and rationing.
Ban fishing
Seizure of the auto industry, sell off and investment into clean public transport
Global ban on all throwaway consumer items, especially anything plastic - mandatory 'built to last' requirements for all industries, no planned obsolescence.

Other than that the free market can have its way, unless something annoys me, I'm sure its efficiency will adapt and recover to the circumstances in no time.
