Canada just got a trade war handed to them

Postby Rio Cana » Sun Feb 10, 2019 11:36 am

The US Pres. signed an executive order on January 31, 2019. Its called “Strengthening Buy-American Preferences for Infrastructure Projects”. It seems a good deal for the US. A bad deal for China. But it seems it hits Canada big time. And according to the following video which explains it, most Canadians know nothing about it. Seems the Canadian government and media have kept it hush in Canada. I would think after giving in to renegotiation NAFTA, that the Canadian government most likely thought that all trade issues with the US were solved. Seems they were wrong.

Unless things are changed it does seem Canada's economy will be deeply affected. Seems they better find customers for there products in other nations in order to fill the gap.

This is so common sense it hurts to start thinking why it wasn't the case before.

I hope that the UK implements identical regulations, especially when it comes to steel and vehicle procurement. We don't need BMW and Audi police cars.

Trump really seems to want to make everybody hate us. First he gets into a trade war with China, and now he gets into a trade war with one of our closet allies.

It is overall a good move economically to hurt foreign nations and strengthen your own. Free trade and a free market only benefit those that are already on top and hurt everyone else.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Common sense for the US. Sucks for Canada, but their current Government prioritized America's FP over their own, so not seeing why America's Taxpayers, (who also don't support US Foreign Policy,) should foot the bill for it. All technologically advanced countries should be doing this. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

British cars?

On the "Sticking it to your friends" point, I somewhat agree and somewhat don't. Ideally the US would have informed Canada of a phasing out of funding over the next 10 years, decreasing it steadily, to prevent a sudden shock to their system.

Or even better the "US+Allies" preference rules would be changed to "US+Actual Friends" so they aren't forking over money to a bunch of quack dictatorships and so on but can still buy shit from Japan, Europe, Canada and stuff.

Before this order the "Made in the US" rules applied to over half of humanity.

Do you remember the 2012 election where Mitt Romney said Russia was the biggest threat to world peace and Obama and the Democratic establishment mocked him, mere years before they began arguing they had allowed US sovereignty to be usurped on their watch by Russia and this is why the other side was unfit to govern?
That's alright, neither do they apparently.

Good luck with justifying the expense of purchasing luxury vehicles for use as police cars.

But Canada, Japan, and Europe are America's enemies! Don't you see that? They're not trading on equal terms with the United States!

Before this order the "Made in the US" rules applied to over half of humanity.

Except nothing is truly ever "Made in the US" anymore. That's the thing.

Considering what 'friends' have done in return over the past 29 years of pussy governments, I think so yeah.

Plenty British-made cars to choose from.

Considering how many BMW X5's, BMW 5 series, Audis A6 and Q7s, Volvo V90s and Mercedes Sprinters/Vitos the British police has in fleet, I don't think they're worried. You're clearly not well versed in UK society if you think the British police is well known for cost-saving. BMWs are by far the most common police cars on the road.

For the most part Jaguars and BMWs are in the same customer bracket. No reason there can't be a full switch.

Nations have friends. Friends can interact and trade with one another and engage in a relationship that's mutually beneficial. Treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.

Plenty British-made cars to choose from.

You mean the Jags, Land Rovers (neither of which are British owned and the latter manufactures a decent chunk of its vehicles outside of the UK) and Nissan?

Considering how many BMW X5's, BMW 5 series, Audis A6 and Q7s, Volvo V90s and Mercedes Sprinters/Vitos the British police has in fleet, I don't think they're worried.

Largely because these are offered with special discounts and have better reliability than British made cars. It's unfortunate for British manufacturers, but there's a reason why there's comparatively few British-made cars compared with those made outside.

Unless of course you want the police force to be equipped with vehicles that are ranked at the bottom of reliability surveys.

You're clearly not well versed in UK society if you think the British police is well known for cost-saving. BMWs are by far the most common police cars on the road.

Just make sure you pass a law that mandates all tow trucks have police sirens on them, that way the rozzers can still arrest criminal scum (such as people without a license for their tire irons) while their land rovers are broken down on the side of the road.

This isn't really something people can resent the US for. Not when their own countries are engaging in protectionism against US goods.

Seems like they will be importing more Chinese and European goods.

Not sure what donnie and the "free market" types think this will do by sticking it to one of our largest importers....
