EXCERPT FROM MINING SUPERVISOR JOURNAL, A.D. 150
We dug too deep. The miners found a strange portal, not an Empire one from the Old Wars, but one of unknown origins, made from a strange metal not of this Earth. That foolish Praetor Maximus ordered it to be powered, and once it was activated using the Trillium Drills, he sent in a Expedition Crew. Only one of them returned, ranting and raving about Demons and warriors in strange armor using magic. We closed off the portal entrance and reported it to the Regional Governor Julius, who ordered a guard battalion to watch it at all times. Two days later, unholy abominations came through the portal and slaughtered the battalion. His magnificence Caesar Kalius sent the Fifth Imperial Army to beat them back, and after three days of fighting they pushed them back through the portal, but their commander, General Augustus, pushed into the portal to squash the last of the creatures. That was our first encounter with the Legion. The army, upon reaching the other side of the portal, found the creatures defeated, and instead were set upon by knights in armor using strange magics. They were the Legion of the Shadow, and were tasked with defending the Mortal Plane from the Demons. Caesar Kalius respected them, but upon his death his son, the idiot Caesar Asinus, ordered the armies back into the Shadow Realms to siphon the Shadow Force as power. We dug too deep.

That was four millennia ago, and the war is still going on. With the New Romanum's technology and fervent worshiper of Asinus for a Caesar, Caloratus, there is no end in sight for the Eternal Wars. Now, more countries wish to exploit the Shadow Realms for infinite power, and the fighting has resulted in entire families living and dying in the war. Will there finally be a victor in this Eternal War, or will the fighting continue on forever?

Hello, and welcome to an RP involving myself and, obviously, The Legion of the Shadow! In this RP you can be your own nation or a person in your nation, and the way to travel to the Shadow Realms is to go through either one-person Exploration Portals or larger Invasion Portals.

I'm worried that these two might count, by some metrics, as "overpowered", but considering other people are bringing in giant space fleets, and that I figured that the whole VCMR would be overkill on an unprecendentedly hilarious scale, I hope this is a reasonable compromise between advanced tech and acceptable scale.

Bio: Eye Of Head is a Shaltrai, a roughly humanoid-shaped creature with a sharp, fractal body and a detached "head" composed of a thin, constantly rotating crystal. He was assembled and taught within the Community, and ultimately chose to become an elite operative, both to secure its interests against the encroachment of entropic civilizations, and to travel the omniverse in search of as many interesting sights as possible. He has been active in this role for well over a thousand years, but as most of his work has been performed in unrelated multiverse clusters totally detached from the Shadow Realms, he has no experience with anything resembling it and first intends to seek out a friendly faction mounting an expedition.

Fault Of Segmentation is a horseshoe-shaped AI-operated drone aircraft about ten feet across that is equipped with enough weaponry and physics-warping tech to outgun the entire armed forces of certain pre-FTL planets. Community members like Eye Of Head who are expected to be entering dangerous environments are "strongly encouraged" to bring a drone; in Eye's case, Fault chose to come along of its own volition, insisting that something as absurdly risky as a Shadow Realms expedition merited a drone with a few centuries of experience and optimized for sheer combat capability.

It should also be stated that these two operatives have been secretly briefed by the VCMR; the younger but far larger multiversal polity has instructed them to transmit any received data on either the Realms or fellow arrivals.
Equipment: Eye Of Head is armed with a Propulsive Nanosuit, an atom-thick barrier that can reflect EM radiation, resist projectiles and explosives with yields up to the kiloton range, and accelerate Eye in any relevant direction in three- or higher-dimensional space - lower-tier sophonts sometimes refer to this functionality as a "jetpack". The nanosuit also allows enhanced scanning and has a rudimentary processor capable of accelerating combat decisions. He wields a handheld particle-accelerator weapon that can toggle between projecting a rapid stream of microscopic iron-metamaterial projectiles and a charged proton ray.

Fault Of Segmentation is packed in its entirety with weapons and industrial equipment, including - among other things - a gluon-reconfiguration ray that can slice through or reassemble hadronic matter, a large-scale magnetic shield generator powered from its antimatter reactors, a set of micromissiles capable of operating independently and spraying atomic flechettes, lasers, or nanotube mesh to entangle opponents, and a mass synthesizer to provide supplies and keep itself repaired and restocked at all times.
