The Election

The elections have begun and there are five major parties in the nation of Asyaelom which are contesting for leadership already. The election and campaigning process is simple. Each party gets funds of 300 million Asyae Dollars ($300,000,000) which is to be spent throughout each state or territory to fund the party's campaign there. Generally, the more funds allocated to a state or territory the more senators you will gain and the more chance you will win over the state, however it isn't that simple.

The people in the states have distinct opinions too, and your party will be more effective in states which want similar policies that your party has promised. To put it short, the two most important factors are the alignment of the voters in the area and the amount spent which gains effectiveness (therefore, not as much has to be spent) if the voters in the area have similar opinions to your party. If your party is based in the region, there is also a slight advantage. Major parties also have huge advantages over minor parties and while the House is almost guaranteed to be full of major parties, the Senate can be a little more interesting.

Your party's policies should be made clear before designating funding and speeches would also help.

Libertarian Party

Party Policies

Pro
  • Capitalist Policies (Free market economy)
  • Medical and recreational marijuana
  • Gun Rights
  • Individual Liberty
  • Environmental Protection *

Anti
  • Socialist Policies
  • Gun Control
  • Stricter Alcohol Regulation
  • Death Penalty
  • Foreign Intervention

Amongst members of the party, opinions are divided on certain topics. These topics are:
  • Abortion
  • Borders, Immigration and Citizenship
  • * Environmental Regulation (the main position, and the one adopted officially by the party, is that property rights should be better established in order to prevent individuals or companies from polluting, as doing so would result in a violation of property rights. This way, pollution would be prevented without coercion from the government, and respecting everyone's liberty and rights)

Speech

Ahead of this year's elections, the leader of the Libertarian Party, Juan Bautista Alberdi, has given the party's first official speech. He talks about the proposals the party has to improve the country. Here's a transcription of Alberdi's speech.

Hello everyone!
I am Juan Bautista Alberdi, leader of the Libertarian Party.
With the forthcoming elections, we want to talk to you, who will be voting soon, about the situation of the country and our proposals to improve it.
We, the members of the Libertarian Party, believe that freedom is not only necessary in Asyaelom, but also beneficial for everyone. Therefore, we will work to guarantee your liberty, and defend you from governmental actions that go against it.
This principle, that of liberty, applies to both economic and social issues. We believe that the government does not have the legitimacy, and thus should not have the power, to interfere with your personal life, apart from guaranteeing your natural rights.
With this being said, I want to address the main political program of our party.
  • On economics, we firmly believe that the market, when acting freely, is efficient at providing the goods and services needed by the population. Because of this, we plan on proposing legislation to eliminate existing economic regulations deemed unnecessary.
  • Continuing on this subject, another important issue for us is taxation. Taxation is considered necessary to fund the government, but it is also theft, as the government forcefully takes the citizens' money away from them. While we are not planning on removing every tax existing in the nation, we think it is fundamental for the country that taxes are as low as possible, which would benefit everyone, allowing individuals to keep their hard-earned money.
  • The views of the government's role vary among members, but we all agree that it should be reduced to a reasonable point. In consequence, it is the party's interest to fight for a small government that does not infringe upon, but rather protects, the rights of the citizens.
  • Regarding marijuana, a somewhat controversial topic, we think that it should be legalised, for both medical and recreational purposes. It is not the government's job to protect citizens from themselves. Apart from this, there is no empirical evidence to prove that legalisation of marijuana would negatively affect the country in any way.
  • In terms of gun legislation, we are strictly against prohibition. We think that gun rights should be guaranteed to every law-abiding citizen who is psychologically qualified. We think it's important to give citizens the right to bear arms to defend themselves, whether it is from other citizens or from the government. If stricter gun control legisation was passed, law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns, while criminals would still have the possibility to be armed, and the former would be undefended from any attack from the latter. Our idea of a good policy regarding firearms is to require psychological tests and background checks to prevent mentally unstable people and violent criminals from obtaining firearms.
  • We fervently oppose foreign intervention. The Libertarian Party considers that the only purpose of our military is that of defence, and that we should not deploy our troops overseas in offensive wars without real justification. Therefore, military spending should be only the necessary to ensure the safety of our nation in case of a foreign attack.
  • Related to the last issue, we think that it is important to always find a diplomatic solution to any conflicts our country might have.
  • Following from the last point, we also think that free trade between countries is beneficial and should not be restricted. Tariffs should be reduced, or preferably abolished, focusing on the most distorting ones first.
  • While we agree with everyone who thinks the environment should be protected, we consider the usual proposals (carbon taxes or similar regulations) coercive, and as such we oppose them. Our view of pollution is that it violates property rights, and it should not be allowed. Property rights would have to be better established to protect the environment.
  • The government has proven to be inefficient at directing and revitalising the economy. Monetary policy should not be in the hands of the government, as it distorts the true market values and causes crises that hurt the population.
  • The government should also avoid subsidising the production of any given good, and corporate welfare should end.
  • We deem social welfare unnecessary. It is inefficient and creates a dependent population. The country should instead provide the legal framework (that of free enterprise) to allow the creation of jobs, making workers' life better and giving unemployed people an opportunity.
  • Social welfare should be replaced with private charity. NGOs and religious organisations would provide for the poor through non-coercive means, allowing people to voluntarily donate for the needy.
  • Our policy regarding education would aim to a free market approach. State schools and colleges should not exist. They serve for indoctrination by the government and are not as efficient, in matters of cost and quality of education, as private ones.
  • If our policy can not be implemented completely, we would consider collaboration with opposing parties in order to ensure that, still within a free market approach, every child can receive education. This could be achieved by subsidising the consumption of the service. In other words, students would receive the funds necessary to attend a school they want, making it possible for them to choose, and allowing competition in the market to improve the quality and lower costs.
  • We shall also pursue a similar goal in the area of healthcare. Government-ran healthcare is not a good approach, in terms of the quality of the service. A system similar to that proposed for education would be something we would be willing to collaborate with other parties on.
These issues will be on our party's program for congress, if a candidate is elected.
Our members of congress would be willing to collaborate and share ideas with members of other parties, on areas in which we can find common ground.
We, the members of the Libertarian Party, will work at our best to ensure the well-being of the country, and we hope that others will too. With your vote, you can change the country for good. Vote Libertarian.
Everything said, I want to thank everyone for being here tonight.
Good night!

’People of Asyaelom!
A new day is upon us!
A day where people all over the nation flock to voting stations to put a cross on their ballot.
Now, many of you in the audience will have already chosen parties, but some of you out there may still not know who you shall vote for!
Well, let me show you why you should vote for the ASP!

1) Climate change is ruining our world. We shall impose environmental restrictions on businesses to make sure that we are playing our part in the fight against climate change.

2) We shall legalise marijuana to be used for medical purposes.
Recreational Marijuana may be allowed in the near future, once it’s effects are fully studied and known.

3) New houses will be built all around the nation, for both students and impoverished citizens.

4) We shall join ASEAN, to pursue relations with other Southeast Asian nations.

5) We promise to make this nation a better place for all!

Thank you, and goodnight!’

  • Environmental Regulation
  • Abortion

Anti
  • Stricter Alcohol Regulation
  • Death Penalty
  • Foreign Intervention

Speech:
Fellow Citizens! Despite the outrageous class differences that remain unaddressed in this country, the day when each and every one of us will have as much to say as the richest CEO about the course of our country is approaching. I am speaking, of course, of election day. The Socialist Union Party is the only political entity that will stand up for the working class, support organized labor and push for true equality in Asyaelom. So I urge you to vote for your voice in parliament, that will not back down in defending the rights and freedoms achieved for the people and oppose the bourgeoisie parties' wish to limit the rights of women, our chances to combat climate change and the rights of immigrants that seek a better life in our country in a violent and volatile world. Our political program's foremost priorities include:

1. Higher marginal taxes on higher income brackets. An 80% tax on all income earned above $2 million at the highest.

2. Recreational and medical marijuana legalization. State monopoly on the sale of recreational marijuana and high-percentage alcohol with a legal drinking age of 18.

3. Cutbacks on military forces, trade embargo with rogue states, regulated free immigration and peaceful foreign policy.

4. Greater equality in education through fees on high-income students and free tuition to low-income students.

5. Nationalization of schools, healthcare and rail transport sectors to subsidize services for low-income citizens.

6. Expansive revitalization of energy sector with renewable sources to provide new jobs and drastically reduce carbon emissions.

The Socialist Union Party will deliver on its promises to the best of its ability and I urge you to pledge your vote to it!

The Socialist Union Party Triumphs!

Image

The election results have been called with the new Prime Minister and ultimately head of government of Asyaelom being Caitlyn Taper of the Socialist Union Party! Socialist Union members celebrate in their new victory to gain the most seats in the House. The Leader of the Opposition has been elected with John D.E. Vicksburg of the Conservative Party fell a stunning five seats behind from Prime Minister Taper although still maintaining a large influence in the House.

The Senate remains more interesting as two parties contest the position of the most influential party. The Conservative Party and the Democratic Party both have the most seats in the Senate with an equal number of seats, therefore the President of the Senate has not yet been elected.

The Chief Advisor has not yet been appointed but the most likely result is Peter Baryshnikov of the Socialist Union Party, although this must be voted on after the President of the Senate is to be elected. Renata Parish has been elected as the Budget Minister by the outstanding performance of the Socialist Union Party in the House. Other Ministers, however are yet to be appointed by the Prime Minister.

Post-Election Duties

President of the Senate Voting (all parties)

The Ministers can be of any party (including their own, of course), so the Prime Minister could even appoint other parties as a certain Minister. Names for Ministers preferably should be made if one of your party members are appointed.

The Budget and Economic Minister handles everything about the economy of the nation and how money is spent. This Minister proposes the new budget for the nation and the actions of the Budget and Economic Minister will greatly impact the economic situation of the nation.

The Defence Minister handles everything about the military of the nation and manages conflict with foreign nation. The Defence Minister becomes extremely influential in the rare case of a war. The Defence Minister’s actions greatly impact the ability of the nation to defend itself and the competency of its military.

The Home Security Minister handles the internal security affairs of the nation including the management of crime and law enforcement. The Home Security Minister’s actions will greatly impact the amount and severity of internal disasters and crime.

The Foreign Affairs Minister handles relations with foreign nations and is often seen making diplomatic visits with nearby nations. The Foreign Affairs Minister’s actions will greatly impact the place of Asyaelom in the global stage.

The Home Affairs and Industry Minister works hand in hand with the Budget and Economic Minister in determining which local sectors and industries are to be prioritised by the government. The Home Affairs and Industry Minister also specialises in immigration in and out of the country. The Home Affairs and Industry Minister’s actions will greatly impact the success of local industries and citizens economically and socially.

De facto the government stays the government regardless if it takes over or not. However if the opposition gains more seats it becomes more influential in the House than the other parties although the Prime Minister, Speaker and the President of the Senate will remain the same.

One more thing though, Minister Choices are only for the Prime Minister and are not for a vote. So the Prime Minister appoints them directly.

Well, the system is not set into stone. Powers can be changed to an extent through bills and such but I’d be careful if you plan to introduce something like this in the future. If you get elected next election it will limit your powers yourself as Prime Minister.
