GAMA: Back in Black [Interest Thread]

Postby Monfrox » Mon Jan 14, 2019 4:01 pm

Image
The quintessential mechs versus zombies role-play is back ...again

But not in it's entirety yet. Working behind the scenes since the last threads, and having realized how we've made our name on the board before, we have decided to not go full-on head first into the new thread. Instead, we're starting slow and making a thread to gauge interest and ideas. Swing by with your two cents so we can help make this into a reality again.

So what is GAMA?

GAMA started way back in 2013. A user named Quavv started an Anime RP interest thread where a lot of players weighed in on what they had wanted to see done in a sort of Anime style. The unanimous story idea was a "
Global infestation and United Nations genetically engineered teenagers in mechs", so that's what we got. Augmented teens in mechs fighting in a zombie apocalypse scenario. Since it's inception, GAMA has gone through a lot of changes. Quavv himself had to dip out to attend to life, and I stepped up to head the RP for another two years or so. After the first thread had died out, I tried to reboot in a different setting but was unsuccessful at getting it off the ground. So, with this all in mind, we're going to take a look into it more in-depth. Don't worry, this won't be on the test.

So what's the story?

The story of the universe of GAMA is two pronged: The story of the invention of mecha and of the zombie apocalypse. I will give you the cliff notes version since most of the canon is given in old thread OPs. A Russian researcher invents the mecha and brings his idea to the Russian government, hoping this technology would be given out. Instead, Russia keeps it and said researcher defects to spread the technology to the West in retaliation, all the while improving on it. The UN steps in and then heavily regulates the use of these mechs down to a single international PMC-type organization. It was at this point that (for plot reasons) it was discovered that the mechs didn't suit human control well unless given an extra source of stress mitigation. So this new organization, GAMA, recruited (and made) teenagers and souped them up with nanomachines (son) to be able to pilot the mechs without any real detriment.

Then the zombie virus breaks out in 2050. Like usual, it starts slow but snowballs before anyone can really organize a decent military response. Turns out some religious cult whackjobs, known collectively as Proteus, are responsible for the outbreak and facilitating its spread across the globe. So, naturally, they have to be stopped. Well in the present day of the canon, in the year 2077, most of Earth has succumbed to the virus. But GAMA is still going strong and is hellbent on bringing humanity back from the brink of extinction.

So what's the plan?

The plan for this is to get GAMA back into it's former glory with new ideas and new blood. The story I have just given out can be subject to change along with much of the rest of the RP. We're still keeping the anime-style mechs vs. zombies though. That's what GAMA was built on and I don't see any need to change the original premise. That said, I'd like to gauge what people would like to see, what kind of ideas we can toss around, and what we can work in to make this better. One thing we're doing is downsizing. The original mechs were usually Gundam sized (about an average of 20 meters in height) and that made fighting tiny human-sized zombies kind of dull. We're going to cut it down to a fourth or fifth, give or take, to create more of a tension when fighting through zombie hordes. This way I don't have to make huge zombie amalgamations to create an actual tense fight. Back to the story, we're toying around with ideas of our own for the story, but we want to hear from you on what you think.

So where do you come in?

Well if you made it this far and nothing has bored you yet, I must have done something right. At this point, we'll give out the old threads for you to read in-depth or skim over at your leisure, just to get an idea of what has been done in the past already and the feel we're going for. Take your time to put in your two cents, and we'll see where we can go. I'm not expecting to get the reboot up within a week, not unless we're ready for it.

So to get the conversation going beyond Mon's original post, one of the big differences that we have been considering is the idea of the mechs only being something like 10-15 feet (3-4 meters) tall as opposed to the 15-20 meters (50-60 feet) that we originally went with. Overall Mon and I thought it would be a good way to keep missions interesting by leveling the playing field between the VALKs and their enemies. I feel like the problem we ran into last time was that the VALKs felt so much larger than life that the only things that were fun to fight were more VALKs or some giant abomination we cooked up. Now it can actually be interesting for a single mech to take on a street full of infected without it just having to step on all of them. The other challenge would be that smaller mechs could also be combated in a wider variety of ways. Regular tanks and gun emplacements, anti-tank rifles, and even a large horde of infected could actually be problematic for a smaller mech.

To start off with though, we aren't sure if we should keep the same names for things, and if we do we want to rework the acronyms a bit so any ideas are welcome. What we have from the old threads is:

The organization being Gama (doesn't really have an acronym of any kind that I remember)
Pilots were called Valkyries
Mechs were aptly named VALKs to coincide with this (it also stood for Vehicular Armored Legged Killer, which I personally am by no means attached to)

Hey Rup, feel free to throw out ideas or invite people.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for their characters, I’d love to hear them now. Being the official OP now, I’ll be regulating my own characters to supporting roles.

I’d also love to hear what mechs you guys are thinking of using.

As a co-op I'm gonna try to just act as the negotiator during OOC discussions, and a story consultant to Mon. I planned on having characters, so I don't want to fully control a story that I have my own characters and agendas with.

As far as those character(s) go I'm still trying to figure it out. I don't feel like it would be right to just dust off the old characters so I'm passing around ideas. I had the thought of some hybrid between Gilbert and Charlotte, but I'd have to figure it out. Maybe a pilot that hasn't had a chance to experience failure, and is a bit too enthusiastic about violence because of it. The other idea was potentially a gritty southern belle character.

The VIKING system would have a lot more prevalence if you choose to bring it back due to the general downsizing of the mechs. It’d be more viable in combat.

Aye, RAGNAROK is the name of the armored exosuit used by the VIKING operators who've gone through the physical and mental surgeries. It's all experimental procedures and could be seen as a shady darker side of GAMA and the UN's increasing desperation. Since the surgeries long term effects are not known. Last IC I had only two individuals go through the procedure and one deployed in the field.

It being experimental might also mesh better with what we are going for this time around too. With the mechs being less monolithic on the battlefield, Mon and I also figured making GAMA and the Valkyries more gritty would be more appropriate. Last time I feel that we painted the Valkyries more like they were these glorious soldier of hope, and while I don't want to entirely take that away, I do feel like allowing for more moral gray area could lead to more opportunities for world and character building.

Aye, I agree. Basically from digging up my old notes was that VIKING was conceptualized as a radical alternative to the VALKYRIE program. While VIKING program used more invasive, extreme, physically and psychologically demanding surgeries with a hypothesized fatality rate of at least 25%. A figure deemed to steep and it was shelved. However, with the increasing desperation to preserve humanity the VIKING program was green lit for a trial run. CV and one other character I made who I forget were drafted into the program. Subjected to the painful surgeries and paired with the RAGNAROK powered armor to increase their survival chances in the field or in case they had to abandon their mech.
