Smoker's Money

Postby Infected Mushroom » Sat Jan 12, 2019 8:31 pm

Please consider the following very simple hypothetical:

Someone offers to pay you 2 million dollars. But only if you smoke a certain number of standard nicotine content cigarettes.

If you are a non-smoker you must smoke 1 cigarette every single day for a whole month.

If you are already a smoker, you must smoke 10 cigarettes every single day for a whole month (if you already do that, then smoke 20 cigarettes every single day for a whole month if you actually already smoke 20 cigarettes every day then... I don't believe you).

Assume that you can legally purchase cigarettes in this scenario regardless of age.

The money will only be paid to you if at the final completion of the task at the end of the month.

Please discuss whether or not you would accept the challenge (as a current non-smoker or smoker) and whether or not you believe you will be able to quit afterwards.

^

Very obviously, by smoking, it means that you have to inhale the cigarettes like a regular smoker

As a non smoker, I would accept the challenge but at the cost of my health for the rest of my life. Quitting and shows of will are not my strength. But I guess that's the price for 2 mil.

As a non-smoker... Just no. Why would I do that, even for $2 mil?

I’d do the challenge in February, and hopefully I get my $2m without getting addicted. I’ll just abandon the look of cigarettes by March.

Firstly this is a startlingly short OP from you.

I've smoked cigarettes once or twice before, not my jam but if smoking 29 cigarettes over 29 days (since I can just wait till February) gets me 2 million dollars fucking sold.

As a non-smoker, absolutely. That’s about thirty cigarettes, hardly enough to do any real damage. Taking in the possibility of addiction, if it’s simply one a day over a thirty day period, then I don’t see any substantial risk or any attachment that can’t be resolved.

I would never. First of all, I'm too young anyways. Second of all, multiple people in my family have died as a result of smoking. Not to mention the fact that I don't know what I'd do with that money.

Edit: And Amin has a point.

As a non-smoker, definitely. The benefits of two million dollars are immense in contrast to 30 cigarettes (I've gone through an addiction before, this would be no sweat).

You could use it to live a modestly comfortable life and then will the rest of it away to various charities when you die.

It's not really a loyalty or a principle being bought, it's asking you to do something unhealthy and not beneficial in any way for money. Similar concept, but... I still don't get why anyone would do it.

EDIT: Also, my nan really did smoke around 20 cigarettes a day. At least, if she didn't, it wouldn't have taken much for her to have reached that number.

Thirty cigarettes over a thirty day period for 2 million dollars. The risk is minimal and the reward is great, especially if you don’t have an interest in an expensive lifestyle. That kind of money could mean you never have to work again as long as you don’t go crazy.

Your needs are as valid as anyone elses. And yeah, it’s unhealthy, but so are a lot of things we do every day. Thirty cigarettes spread out like that are as damaging as you think.

I wouldn't need that money, other people would. Music programs in schools need 2 million dollars. And I think it's best to avoid doing something that you've seen killed people.

I have enough unhealthy lifestyles already. I probably wouldn't become addicted, but I don't really want to risk it. Plus, I'm not too bothered about having $2 million. Sure, it'd be nice, but so would a lot of things that I wouldn't smoke cigarettes for.

Well, I quit about 3 years ago, so I qualify for the 1 a day? Childs play, gimme my 2 million.

Given that I was a pack and a half a day smoker, I'm probably screwed anyway, might as well enjoy the few years remaining.

Everyone in this thread has 0 nutsack.

I'm a none smoker, and sure as hell would I smoke every day for 2 million dollars. Easily, with those 2 million, I'd cure myself of cancer if I had it, be a millionaire, and retire like Hugh Hefner surrounded by Kayne West-esqe Gold Diggers. Y'all need to live a little.

While 2 million dollars is a hell of a lot of money, you're really overestimating how much that is.

Two Million is more than enough to get by if you don't blow it all on garbage. Investing in stocks with two million dollars given to you basically for free means that you're not losing money as that two million was never really "yours" in the first place. Someone just gave it to you

While I wouldn't do it, IM, I also can't click your poll because I don't "hope the person offering the money burns".
