HISTORY
Philippine Airlines was founded in 1941 as Philippine Air Lines, February 15th by Andrés Soriano; operations would start in March. The first flight would take place using a Beechcraft Model 18 from Nielson Field in Manila to Baguio. The company would be nationalised that year's September and John R. Schutz would be elected as the Treasurer for the airline. During World War II, operations stopped and the two small aircraft and their pilots were put into military service upon the breakout of the Pacific War against the Japanese. One was shot down over Mindanao and the other was destroyed in a airfield raid in Surabaya. After that 5-year hiatus, Philippine Airlines entered service again with five Douglas DC-3s and returned back to Nielson Field. Nielson Field has been seriously damaged by the Japanese during the war and re-construction started costing over a million pesos and the airport became the official gateway to the Philippines by airplane. In 1946, the first flight from Asia to the Americas happened when a chartered DC-4 carrying 40 American citizens to Oakland via Guam, Wake Island, Johnson Atoll and Honolulu. The title flag carrier would be officially designated to the airline aswell. By 1947 flights to Europe had started following the acquisition of more DC-4s. Due to the government making the decision to convert Nichols Field in Pasay City into an airport for Manila, PAL had to move operations and a move commenced and 600,000 pesos would be used to upgrade the airport. In 1954, the government desided to suspend all flights to the USA and Europe but flights would.be operations once again later, the airline would also start using CV-340s which would be replaced by the Vickers Viscount 784.
PAL would enter the new jet age with a Boeing 707 which would in turn be replaced by the Douglas DC-8 leased from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and would be used for long haul international flights to Europe and the United States. The DC-3 would still be operated for domestic flights
but the BAC One Eleven would later start flights to Cebu, Bacolod and Davao. At the start of Ferdinand Marcos' presidency he declared that Philippine Airlines would be the sole airline of the PH and would have monopoly in the industry, it's two subsidiaries PAL Budget and PAL Express would be exempt from this declaration. The company continued expanding with the introduction of the DC-10 in 1974. In 1979, the 747-200B otherwise known as the Jumbo Jet would enter service with the 727 and A300 and the fleet of DC-8s would be retired aswell. PAL would start constructing new buildings all across Manila including the current PAL Building HQ, PAL Technical Centre, PAL Inflight Centre, PAL Data Centre and PAL Aviation Centre. The airline would also achieve great heights after earning the Les Chaines de Rotisseurs. In 1980 the 747 would cross the Pacific for the first time in a flight operated by PAL. In 1982 the first flight from the new NAIA Terminal 1 would fly to San Francisco. PAL would also strengthen their cargo capacity after constructing a dedicated cargo terminal near the MIA Passenger terminal. Dante G. Santos would become the next chairman and would modernize the domestic fleet and introduce the Short 360, 737-300 and Fokker 50. The terminal which is now Terminal 4 outgrew it's full capacity and had to rent out the Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation hangar and Terminal 2 opened and would start flights to General Santos and Puerto Princesa using the A300. The 1997 Asian financial crisis hurt the airline and flights had to be suspended but due to Goverment funding and subsidies the airline stayed afloat and all flights would commence once again.
