Songs that reign you in.

Postby Nanatsu no Tsuki » Thu Jun 25, 2009 9:37 am

Or, better yet, which songs out there calm you enough that your mind seems to clear and you can decide? Which songs out there craddle you in their arms and set you straight again? Which songs comfort you?

Karen Matheson's voice, no matter what she sings, always comforts me. Especially this song: Mi Le M'Uilinn (With My Elbow Upon My Knee).

At least the calm riff.

"Light of A Thousand Stars" and "The Wizard" by Uriah Heep, "Terraplane Blues" (Foghat), and, to an extent, Bon Jovi's "Lost Highway," just because it reminds me of New Mexico, which calms me for no apparent reason.

Although, almost any song without a fast tempo or particular loudness will do.

"Free Bird" (you suck if you don't know who did it) and "Fool for the City" (Foghat) just make me feel good, but then again, a good number of Saxon songs do that (particularly "Denim & Leather"), and NONE of them could be called calming.

Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman or A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

"101 North" - Tomahawk (the first 25 seconds or so of the video (before the band fades into view) aren't part of the song, that's just some stupid spoken introduction for the terrible fan-made video. Unfortunately, that's the only album version of the song on youtube, so you just gotta live with it).
This song not only calms me down, but it pretty much blanks out any emotions I might be feeling, leaving me calm and in control.

A lot of Nu Metal (especially Slipknot, Mudvayne and Nonpoint) has a more generally calming effect. When it isn't making me feel filled with glee, that is.

Edit: forgot to include the link, even after apologizing for it.

There are a few ...

Just about anything on João Gilberto's album with Stan Getz.

Caetano Veloso's Terra

Oh, and everything of Tom Jobim's but his Stone Flower album will do it every time.

And, I don't know, there are others, Jo Stafford's voice, Tom Waits "Jersey Girl" ...

I really don't have any music to calm me down. The closest thing I have is concentration music, which really doesn't count.
