The Greatest Monarch of England

Postby Mardla » Sat Dec 15, 2018 9:43 am

Who do you think was the greatest English monarch? And why?

My nomination goes to Queen Elizabeth I. She presided over England's cultural zenith. She passed the 1563 Act For the Relief of the Poor. She formally abolished serfdom. She ordered all Moors be deported. And she was relatively tolerant of Catholics even though the Pope declared her illegitimate and ordered Catholics not to recognize her authority.

Charles I. His reign went as all monarchs' should.

Queen Elizabeth II for my sheer lack of knowledge of most of England's monarchs.

OK then
I would say Queen Victoria
Under her Reign the UK had reached the zenith of it's power making Britain not only the world's dominant superpower but also the world's workshop. Victorian Britain became the world leader in industry and manufacturing and the British spirit for entrepreneurship and invention was unrivalled.Britain also stayed out of European wars.

Well at that point, PM was really functioning as executive more than the monarch.

Nah, guys. Every monarch after James II was illegitimate. (Note: I'm merely kidding/playing devil's advocate)

I would go with Cnut, or Alfred if he would be acceptable.

Well at that point, PM was really functioning as executive more than the monarch.

But the Queen was supportive of the technological changes and in terms of European wars she advised her ministers not to intervene in 1864 war in Schleswig Holstein and her letter to Wilhelm I did help in preventing a second Franco-German war in 1875.

Doubtless Henry I. If you're a blind nationalist, include Henry II. If you're a troll-level xenophobe, include Henry III. Optional to include Richard I, if you have any tendency to romanticism. If you're an obnoxious heretic, you'll include John because he destroyed absolutism, and exterminated the virus of William, the Conqueror. Then most obligingly you'll add on Henry VIII, because you grudgingly recognize the value of pure domination as worth its own weight in gold when it comes to kings. Then if you're writing a doctoral dissertation, you'll tack on Henry VII too because he's underrated but, without him, none of the mahogany furniture days would have come into existence. And, that will do it for you, unless you're some kind of destructive intellectual anarchist who thinks the 'monarchs of England' continue after the laughable Norman crapout we commonly call 'the Hundred Years' war.

Always the current one as far as my family is concerned, since we have sworn oaths to them for over a thousand years, according to my research into my family tree with its various military and noble roots.

He spoke French, but the French and Anglo-Saxon languages mixed together to make the English language.
