Janus is a relatively new nationstates region, founded on November 21st 2018. We focus on accomplishing Issue-Based Roleplaying (IBRP), which is a form of roleplaying that relies on Nationstates Issues and World Census Statistics and rankings. We see it as the best way to create intricate and interesting nations that have to make hard sacrifices to distinguish themselves.

Janus is the accomplishment of a hypothesis every single issue answerer must have formulated once: what if my issue decisions had effect? What if my decision to invade my neighbor actually had significance on an international stage? What if I could actually issue play not on my own but with others? Janus answers these questions by offering a chance for nations to make their issues come true and affect the way their nation behaves on a world diplomatic level.

We understand that issues do not provide for absolutely everything, and do not dogmatically restrict ourselves from roleplaying what we like because we don't have the right issue. We just respect and enact issue outcomes when we do get them, and strive not to contradict them in our text roleplaying.

Janus distinguishes itself because it does not fall inside a determined category of roleplaying. We've seen Nation RP of course, but also Character arcs, faction Roleplays and International Alliance roleplays. Roleplay level can be as large as world spanning and as limited as a conversation between two characters. Roleplay structure, post appearance and storytelling is also diverse, ranging from news articles to descriptive posts to opinion speeches. Similarly, we prefer to refer to NS Stats to determine tech level rather than creating rigid PT/MT/PMT barriers. Nevertheless, to ensure a fair roleplaying environment we act MT by default (meaning this is where you are unelss your scientific advancement stats are extreme), with no far fetched future tech.

Our only hard requirements is that you should be a human-only community and roleplay respecting some basic rules. Apart from that, Janus is a region of great freedom of roleplaying styles and opinions in which anyone is welcome!

Our map simulates a real world map without being an earth map, but rather an imaginary panet map. All other characteristics, such as distances, equator, polar circle etc... are the same as on earth.

Land not occupied by nations are considered unknown to Janusite society until a nation claims it, in which case it is "discovered".

Why do I have to use NS Stats?
We engage a lot in international relations in the region, and We find stats to be the best way to translate policies and leader wishes into usable indicators of a nation's strength in a variety of domains. After all, if war breaks out, but throughout your issues you've constantly defunded the military, well tough luck. You can't get a big army because you want to. You get a big army because you make the policies that go this way and accept the consequences of those.
It makes the creation of a marysuestan impossible
Issues are also the best way to trigger international events and crisis.

Can I roleplay stuff I didn't get an issue about?
Of course! If we had to get an issue about a state visit every time we organised one we'd be a sad place. You may expand on the consequences of a given issue or make events up. You aren't supposed to roleplay against your issues though.

Why do I need to post secret messages on the RMB?
So everyone as a player can be entertained. Thanks to our metagamaing rule though you can be ensured that no character will have knowledge of your secrets.
More importantly it allows for transparency and trust between players.

A short summary of all events in Janus

A conference was held in Stukvik, Havenborg between the nations of Argoni, Chainbreakers, Havenborg, Pan-Bolivarn alliance, and Quilaco. They have debated and agreed upon setting up a supranational entity named the Commonwealth of Independant States (CIS for short) that would combine military, economic and civilian advancements for all members. They have voted on the following charter.

In Havenborg elections were called but suspended as Janus entered in a region-wide war opposing CIS forces and Staleland over an alliance between Shajaea and Barnbouth. The latter were easily beat and were convened to New Thimpu, Staleland, to sign a treaty of peace.
One of the more notable aftermaths of the war is the seizure of a canal formerly controlled by Barnbouth by the CIS, which set up the CIS Canal Authority there. After much instability it was able to root itself as a temporary administrator of the canal region.

The world discovered the nations of Unpredictiton and Iqaltut.

In Argoni, a more capitalist-friendly government took power and participated with other CIS Nations in talks to implement a common trading policy. Meanwhile, Iqaltut visited Quilaco, affirmed friendship and announced their intention to apply for membership at the CIS.

The nations of Breizh Ivel, Karnten, and Wanoo were chartered

The Sultan of Shajaea, bitter over his defeat against the CIS, contacted Breizh Ivel and proposed the creation of a counter-power to the CIS named the AXIS (Alliance of Xerophytic Incredible Soldiers). Breizh Ivel admitted interest for the project.

In Barnbouth, the death of the King has left siblings in a war of succession that has turned into a Civil War. The CIS met and chose not to intervene in the war, but admitted Iqaltut to their membership.

In the meantime, the Sultan of Shajaea visited a new nation, SPQUA, and recruited them to the AXIS.

A new theocracy, Banu Asfour, announced their existence. The announcement received mixed reactions from the international community. Banu Asfour announced their intentions to further diplomatic relations with Shajaea and possibly join the AXIS.

A short summary of all events in Janus

Banu Asfour joined the AXIS and it appeared the AXIS was gaining power.

Nevertheless, it elected not to intervene as, upon the end of the Barnbouthian Civil War, it was Unpredictiton's turn to enter domestic strife. Following a controversial dice roll the country was divided between Administratifs, who wanted to invalidate the result, and the Loyalists, who reaffirmed faith in the dice god. The latter faction committed numerous war crimes against Unpredictiton's citizens, and the CIS chose to step in and promptly invade Unpredictiton. The Loyalist cheif, Dicey McSlicey, was tried in Nordheim, Havenborg, and sentenced to a lifetime in prison with parole by CIS judges after a landmark first trial for the International Court of Justice.

Meanwhile, nations like San Pera, New Camelot of Avalon, Amordoth and Clarkstan, all with populations in the billions and surreal statistics, were detected by various Janusite countries. The Entry of these superpowers in the Janusite world was very apprehended and somewhat feared by traditional alliances.

Great controversy rose when the Clarkstan government held inconsistent discourse about their military might, and soon entered in a propaganda war with Argoni, that nature ended by a rock shaking earthquake that made the entire nation disappear. Meanwhile, the countries of Wanoo and Intelligentstan were unchartered as it became apparent the existence of these people was a myth and could not be proven.

Amordoth entered in sympathetic relations with the AXIS, whilst Argoni built decent relations with San Pera and sent their chief unionist Michael Gorb to Kobernhavn, New Camelot of Avalonia. Amidst rumours that Argoni may join the Avalonian-led Epicurian Federation, and the highly mediatised announcements by the Avalonian government that it would remain mostly neutral in Janusite affairs, a disastrous supervolcano led to the total annihilation of New Camelot of Avalonia.

Quilaco announced the creation of the Macuilxochitl, including the Summer Popocat Games, a Janus-wide sports events that should unite all nations under the proud banner of sports. No nation has yet to formally reject the invitation to compete.

Many thanks! There is no very fixed rule for frequency of these updates yet, but I am striving to make them more frequent and detailled!
Anyway, feel free to pop in and have fun! Our RMB is quite reserved for roleplaying, but our Discord server is full of non roleplaying people just here for the enjoyable OOC experience of Janus. We are proud to be very inclusive of roleplayers of all levels of experience and non roleplayers alike

The land in black is both unclaimed and to all nations IC absolutely unknown of. Nations may spawn in those black lands, and suddenly such lands become known and that discovery is intended to involve entering nations in the regional lore.

Land in white is just like land in black, albeit icy and mostly inhospitable, though this did not stop at least one nation from settling there.

A short summary of all events in Janus

The Popocat games have started in Quilaco, with results soon to be published! In total 14 nations have sent athletes to compete in 49 different sports. The opening ceremony of the games was marked by a superhero fight between a local vigilante, Llama Man, and their evil counterpart El Banderiante. The footage has gone viral in Janus with many different reactions.

The Commonwealth of Independent States has passed a trade deal that seals the members’ economies even closer to one another. The environmental regulations were novel and powerful. More especially, the DEAL allows for the spreading of Unions and Employers’ Organisations throughout Janus, much to the excitement and fear of many.

The Cores of Zandovia were chartered and a state visit in Iqaltut lead to the signing of a Treaty and heavy dilemmas for the CIS’ northernmost nation. Zandovia applied to the CIS, their application is still being considered.
Lunar Industries was also chartered and their leader, CEO Sam Bell, has engaged in a personal visit with the Empress of Barnbouth in Spinetto Castle, Southern Barnbouth.

The Sultan of Shajaea ordered his troops to be deployed next to the Republic of Karnten following a border dispute with Breizh Ivel and allegations of a communist takeover master-plan. In response, Karnten announced the opening of an international conference between all nations of the Inner Sea; All have actively accepted to attend and are flying and/or landing in Karnten.

Rezameriah was chartered and has engaged in relationship with Shajaea.

A short summary of all events in Janus

Summits treaties and visits have been frequent as of late

The Inner Sea summit started, and all nations sent representatives to the conference where they had a chance to meet each other. Nevertheless, due to lack of proper leadership little progress was made and ambassadors returned to their nations disappointed, feeling a little more could have happened.
A CIS summit was held in Belem, Pan-Bolivarn Alliance. The nations were to discuss the admittance of Zandovia to the Commonwealth of Independent States. After some dissent the members struck an agreement to allow Zandovia in as an observer member until they reached appropriate conditions to be accepted as a full member.
This backfired when Zandovia secretly joined the AXIS, in contradiction with their previous treaties with Iqaltut and the CIS.

Not everyone appreciates assertive Argoni propaganda!

The Corsair Confederation of Morlond was chartered, and made themselves known to the world thanks to a series of raids and attacks on ships and servers Janus-wide. Their southern neighbour, San Pera, chose to join rather than fight the pirates, and after hosting a productive state visit in their capital of Daikushiro, the Perrans signed a treaty with the Morlondian corsairs. The Treaty stipulated amongst many clauses that Perrans and Morlondians were to work together on a space program, a particle accelerator, and on intelligence regionwide. They applied this promptly.
SPQUA’s servers were breached into releasing a doping scandal SPQUA had supported during the Popocat Games. Pan Bolivarn and Zandovian servers were also successfully attacked. However, apart from some maritime operations, target nations did not violently react.
In Argoni, anti-Zandovian propaganda was printed, prompting Zandovian leaders to shut down all communications and trade with Argoni, and threaten the Union Leadership. This let to Argonis suing Zandovia before the International Court of Justice, though none of the proceedings took place as the representative for Zandovia, and indeed the entire country, seemed to have shut down all communications as they became unheard of.
The Holy Empire of Germany WWII was chartered and sent representatives to visit Stambol, the Capital of Shajaea. The BenKassem federation separately took the same course of action, knotting the potential for a widening of the AXIS.
The United Kingdoms of New Avalonian Union contacted Janusite nations from an unknown location proposing international relations, which has been met with some responses.
Shajaea, SPQUA and Banu Asfour conducted joint operation on unclaimed territories, possibly to establish AXIS domination over these lands.
The Staleland Department of Cartography announced the discovery of a new continent, though it is unknown if there are any nations on it.

A representation of the Three Sail Partners by Argoni

New Camelot of Avalonia applied for membership in the Commonwealth of International States. The application went very well and the new member was unanimously accepted. However, the CIS Canal Authority also took this opportunity to slip in a line about its independence. With Avalon's entry, the Canal became an independent nation and a full member of the CIS.
This upset Avalon as the Canal had chosen to piggyback on their strong application. For some time Avalon declined to recognise the Canal, until the signature of the Treaty of Pirijanesborg with Banu Asfour.

Germany WW2 decided to ban pirates from its waters, causing Morlondian anger. They also started a diplomatic tension with San Pera over islands and colonisation that was peacefully resolved. However, distrust of Germany WW2 brought Morlond, San Pera and the Pan Bolivarn Alliance together in the Treaty of the Three Sails, creating a new powerful regional block.

Meanwhile, Banu Asfour hired Morlondian pirates in a bid to tranpsort new extremely efficient secret weaponry. The transfer happened correctly. However, some strange firest started happening in Banu Asfour.

Barnbouth chose to establish colonial outposts on two islands near the less and less dark continent. Thaerlantis became a new Barnbouthian port. Barnbouth also attempted to change its statistics and is known to have abolished the death penalty. The Barnbouthian Empress has also hired a host of foreign advisors to her Court to upgrade some of Barnbouth's institutions.

Morlondian admirals have started signing independent commercial pacts. The first to do so was Hizir, who signed pacts with Karnten, Shajaea and Banu Asfour. However, the Black Emperor has also visited Copep and the Pirate Queen is known to jave begun negotiations with Germany WW2 in her ambitious city project of Tamao.

A new nation known as Tulivag has been chartered. Quilaco won the race to attract the nation and sent a representative there for a state visit that ended up being much longer than forecasted and featuring the beauty of Tulivagian culture.

The nations of Clarkstan and Republica srpska and Herezeg-Bosnia were chartered. Clarkstan started a new foreign policy of creating friendships with many nations, visiting Barnbouth and Republica Srpska and Herzeg-Bosnia. clarkstan has not ligned and does not intend to align with either the CIS or the AXIS? hoping to reconcile them instead.

SPQUA decided to expand into the continent and started a campaign with the help of fellow Shajaean and Asfouri AXIS allies. The campaign was strenuous due to the harsh climate of the area, but SPQUA managed to conquer land. Aeternians also invited a German advisor to the Urbs Aeternam .

Meanwhile, Argoni hosted an international conference known as Intercomme, where the socialist nations of the world could discuss. Argoni, Avalon and Germany WW2 participated. However the conference never came to a satisfactory outcome.

San Pera and Germany WW2 have cooperated in order to open a common base on the southern ice cap, becoming the first nations to do so. the journey and building of the base allowed for informal friendships between the two nations. Perran Celestial Emperor Fuyuhito has also embarked on a State Visit to New Camelot of Avalonia.

Puntacareta was chartered and started relations with the Pan Bolivarn Alliance. However, the assasination of a high dignitary of Puntacareta made the nation plundge into silence.

Morlondian Pirates illegaly entered Aeternian waters and deployed drones for testing. In response, SPQUA deployed parts of its Air Force. After exchange of fire the Morlondians were forced to leave Aeternian waters, though not without inflicting painful losses to the Aeternian Air Force.

Staleland Airlines Flight 52 was hijacked by Christian terrorists is Shajaea. Suliman VI refused to help Staleland recover victims, but his son managed to reason him. A subsequent mission led Suliman VII, the son of the Shajaean Sultan and heir to the Shajaean Throne, to expose himself as a more reasonable world leader. All hostages were safely recovered.

San Pera and Morlond have developped a laser propelled launcher and becmae the furst space organisation to send objects to earth's orbit.

Havenborg and Chainbreakers decided to merge and form the Kritocratic Repubic of Picland, a progressive nation led by judges and courts. They succesfully convinced the CIS to allow them to conserve the two votes as each former nation had one. Picland has started cordial relations with New Camelot of Avalonia.

The CIS held a General Membership meeting in Chainbreakers. Tulivag applied and was accepted as a member of the Commonwealth. The CUS gave its blessing to the Picland merge and discussed Foreign Policy;

Chrond, Kapithal, Tysoania, The Cansa and Kaumera were chartered. Chrond started scientific projects with San Pera and sent representatives to their neighbour SPQUA. Meanwhile Clarkstan has been expanding Southwards.
In Cansa, the Cansan civil war between The Cansa and Velkerr Cansa has concerned international powers, but no intervention was carried out.

The Republica Srpska and Herzeg-Bosnia held a military parade and honours ceremony where the Chrondian and Clarkstanian leaders were invited.

Copep was chartered and opened relations with Morlond.

Germany WW2 invaded the Marijenes Isles, prompting strong international response as many leaders make their way to Belem, in the Pan Bolivarn Alliance, to discuss a possible joint response.
