Yes, yes. "Who could be worse than Nazis?" Fair question. I don't know. But that's kind of the issue. We don't know.

Messing with the past, however well intentioned, is superbly dangerous.

How would there be a power vacuum in the absence of the Nazis?

Hitler didn't take over terra nullius. Weimar Germany had a democratic government.

"Made" them into Nazis? That implies that they didn't have a choice in the matter...

My oldest grandfather was twelve when the war started. None of them really had a choice.

Not if you're too far away from the time machine or just get snuck up on.

More to the point, since we have the ability to time travel and kill Hitler, killing subsequent Hitlers shouldn't be that difficult. The only real complication is getting in a careless hurry, and killing Eleanor Roosevelt by mistake.

And even then due to the implicit rules set out you can just go back and trap yourself until the thing that would of happened pasted.

Just ran across a new solution, which calls for sorting all babies by murderable-ness, so as to determine median killability. It has unexpected consequences.

No.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

Dietrich Bonhoeffer tried to, and he was a great Christian.
He was also willing to pay the penalty for his crime (and they did execute him), and he confessed it as a sin.

Hitler might make an ideal target because he was so central to the regime. Inoer situations it might be pointless to kill a dictator because there would be so many others lining up to replace him.
