Stakum Military Base, Stakum
Van Noort Islands, New Drenthe
Early morning, 12-1-2018
In the early morning, soldiers stood in the fortifications of the Stakum Military Base, awaiting an attack from enemy forces in the city. Lieutenant Colonel Hamink is the commander of the battalion stationed in the base. It is early morning and dark, but Hamink is wide awake, fearing an attack. He has been at the base for several years, and many years before when he was a soldier, before becoming a battalion commander. But this is the first time the base is under threat of an attack. The base was quickly fortified. Defenses set up around the land border. Soldiers ready to fight back in case of an attack. Many were nervous in anticipation of the attack, but mere weeks earlier soldiers would be foolish to think there was an attack. It all happened too quickly.
The Van Noort Islands are a small but spread out island chain in the southwest of New Drenthe. They are known as Epoñama by the native inhabitants, who are an ethnic minority in New Drenthe, making up about a sixth of the population. New Drenthe is a one party state ruled with an iron first under a capitalist dictatorship. It is rich in oil. The oil reserves are in the Van Noort Islands, but most of the drilling is done by citizens from the northeast of New Drenthe, or foreign nationals. The Epoñama people are not happy with the arrangement, and many support an underground communist party, Ekato Epoñama. Most of the time the party engages in quiet acts of subversion, but recently, the leadership declared independence from New Drenthe, which the Epoñama supported. Oil fields, military bases, weapons factories, and other government assets were quickly seized. The Epoñama even landed in the south of the island of Arnegein, and putting a base there under siege. This all caught New Drenthe off guard, and most of the targets were quickly taken. The Stakum Military Base is the only location on the island not taken over by the Ekato Epoñama, but it is under siege.
Hamink was told reinforcements would arrive soon, and was told to hold out, for the Stakum Military Base was a strategically important location. It also contained large amounts of weapons, which may be another reason the Epoñama want to launch an attack. Hamink was awake, but most of his battalion was still asleep in the early morning. Hamink hoped the attack would come later rather than sooner, when his soldiers are awake, or maybe if reinforcements arrived.
As the morning sun began to rise, the base seemed deserted. The rest of the battalion would now be waking up, and man the defenses. Suddenly, Hamink heard the sound of an artillery piece firing, followed by many more. Hamink's worst fears have become a reality. He orders his guns to fire back, and soldiers to move quickly to the fortifications. However, it seemed to be exchanges of artillery shells now. No attempts to overrun the defensive line. But Hamink made a mistake in setting up defenses. While carefully protecting the land border, he has completely neglected the sea. He realized this only when it was too late.
Several minutes after the barrage began, Hamink saw a landing craft moving to the shore. He then realized his mistake. He orders most of his soldiers to abandon his defensive line, and guard the coast from a landing operation. Soldiers lined the coast, carrying any weapon that can be moved. The artillery opened fire on the landing craft, but it seemed to ignore them and advance forward. The landing craft made landfall, and lowered its ramp for all soldiers to see. It was completely empty. Hamink realized what has happened, and was furious. It was a decoy, meant to move soldiers away from the defensive line. He ordered his soldiers to march back to the line, but it was too late.
In his absence, the defensive line was breached. The Epoñama opened fire on Hamink's battalion, using their own weapons, along with captured machine guns and artillery. Most of the battalion was killed or wounded in the fight, and were forced to retreat. Over the sound of heavy gunfire, Hamink orders a last stand in the barracks. But many soldiers, including Hamink himself, would be killed before they could make it. The Epoñama moved in, cleared every possible location soldiers could hide in, and surrounded the barracks. The soldiers inside soon surrendered, knowing they could not win the fight. They were forced to notify the New Drenthe government about the loss, then were all shot. The base, the last New Drenthe stronghold in the Van Noort Islands, was completely taken over.
South Arnegein Military Base
560 kilometers away
General Kemper received a call from the military base in Stakum. He picked up, thinking it was Lieutenant Colonel Hamink, but he was wrong. He heard the terrified and hushed voice of a soldier.
Soldier: "Sir, Stakum base is completely overrun. Most soldiers, including Hamink are dead. I am forced to relay this at gunpoint by the Ekato Epoñama. Long live Ne-!"
Before he could complete his sentence, there was a sound of gunfire. Kemper then heard a much different voice speak.
"Let this be a warning for what is to come. Ekato Epoñama is destined to win."
The warning seemed to be too late however. As Kemper listened to the call, soldiers were defending the South Arnegein base against an attack by the Ekato Epoñama. After seceding and capturing many government assets, they landed in the island completely unopposed, then secured large gains before New Drenthe forces stopped the unopposed advance. But the military base is completely surrounded. At dawn, the same trap that caught Hamink off guard happened at South Arnegein, but the main push was held up for a while. But soldiers managed to secure a secondary defensive line farther back, holding off the advance. But Kemper finished the call and walked out just in time to see all hell break loose.
As Kemper saw the line, the single landing craft returned back to the shore, but full of soldiers. The soldiers opened fire on the defensive line. This threw many of the defenders into chaos, as they scrambled to fight back and hold off the advance. Amidst the chaos, the Epoñama broke through the defensive line. Kemper managed to hide just in time. Most defenders were killed as they tried to fight back or run away from the sudden rush of enemy soldiers. The base was soon completely overrun, while several soldiers, along with Kemper, hid in a bunker. But they were soon discovered, and just as the soldiers in Stakum, notified the government at gunpoint, and were shot.
Rules
- I am the OP and my word is law.
- Keep proper RP etiquette, and avoid godmodding(deciding actions over others) and metagaming(using OOC knowledge to your IC advantage).
- Keep deployments realistic. This is simply a rebellion in a small island nation.
- NS rules apply.
- You most choose one of the two sides, not both, and not a third side.
- No weapons of mass destruction, not even "in case of emergency". The conflict will not escalate far enough to involve using them.
- Play realistically.
- No one line posts. They should be at least a good paragraph or two.
