What Your Flag Means

Postby Ostronopolis » Thu Jun 25, 2009 4:51 am

What does your flag mean? Does it have a meaning in your nation or is it just there and no one knows why? I'm curious.

The flag is a square, with all sides of equal length - representing the belief that all people of San Ivanna are equal.
The red and white represent the Hereldic colours of Saint Ivan, the patron saint of San Ivanna
The red represents the blood shed by the St. Ivans followers during the great persecution of his people in 1054
The white represents the peacefulness shown by St. Ivan, and also the idea of peace still shown throughout the nation.

The gold border represents the idea that the nation of San Ivanna is enclosed and protected by personal wealth and dignity.

The flag contains the coat of arms of San ivanna and two Croix d'Ivanna (Cross of Ivan) a military honour given to the nations people by the Prince and Grand Master Fra' James XVII in 1722

The red is for the blood spilled by our soldiers in all the wars that we have fought in.
The black is for the despair that the nation feels every time one of our soldiers fall.
The empty circle in the middle is to remember all those who died for our nation that still have no name.
The silver and evenness of the circle is to show that we believe all citizens to be created equal.
The white borders are to show that even in war Ostronopolis believes in peace.

Grey indicates the even handedness of the Federal government that serves the people. Blue indicates the peace that the Federation hopes to achieve in the world, in spite of the world's problems. The fasces indicates the place that law and order have in this goal, and the gauntlet indicates the committment of the armed forces of the Federation to defend its people, and to strike at those that wish the Federation harm.

Its all very nationalistic, though a flag change may be in order with the transfer to a republic.

The flag of the Most Ancient and Noble House of Lancaster of Wessex dates back centuries, and has remained fairly in-tact save for minor changes.

It can be described thusly:

The ducal standard of the Lancastrians of Wessex is flown wherever the Duke of Wessex resides, where permitted.

1. Top Left Panel: Tri-lion flag of England; ancient pattern representing English royalty.

2. Top Right Panel: The declared flag of Wessex, England.

3. Bottom Left Panel: The three fleur-de-lis representing the French ancestry of the Lancastrians of Wessex.

4. Bottom Right Panel: The coat-of-arms of the Lancastrians of Wessex.
Lancaster.
Duke of the Most Ancient and Noble House of Lancaster of Wessex

The Most High, Potent, and Noble Prince, Lancaster, By the Grace of God, Duke of Wessex, Protector of the Enclaved Pious Estates of The Church of Wessex, Lord of Saint Aldhelm Islands, Prince and Great Steward of Celtic Wessex, Keeper of the Great Seal of the Duchy and House of Lancaster of Wessex, Sovereign of the Most Ancient and Illustrious Order of the Gold Gryphon, etc.

- The dragon is the ancient beast of myth associated with the Black Mountains region which is the heartland of the state.

- The cross is not at this time a religious symbol but represents values of equity, freedom, fairness, and progessivism (OOC - Scandinavian values + Scandinavian flag)

- A blue cross on a gold field was the standard of troops mustered in wars for the Empire of Ristemnen, which is the ancestor state for Maerngau (as well as the Empire of Great Maern and other countries in our region)

- Taken together, Black, Blue, and Gold represent strength, wisdom, and freedom.

Our flag is a visual representation of our religion and our societal values.

The jagged line represents an upward-trending mercantile or stock exchange.

The bulls represent bull markets.

Green and Silver are colors associated with currency.

It's the Political Compass. We adjust it from time to time, based on where on the political spectrum we happen to be at the time. "Inoffensive Centrist Democracy" is, well in the center. Although out personal freedoms are a bit higher than in the middle.

The Fourteen Stripes(7 Red,7 Black) represent the Fourteen original lords who founded the Dominion.

The 4 colors(red, blue, green, black) are the national colors.

Red represents the blood of those who sacrificed(and were sacrificed) to secure the nation.

Black represents the uncertainty of what occurs after death(and the Dictators favorite color)

Green Represents the vast green fields and forests and blue Represents the vast blue unpolluted skies.

the 13 stars(alternating black and red except for the center one which is of course blue)

represent the twelve councilor lords and the center represents The Dictator Lord,The Mistress of The Keep and The Grand Vizier.

There are two flags for The Federation of Allied Governments, one for the military, and one for the proper state.

Military Flag
Image

The CMB stands for Citadel Military Battalions, since the main military installation in The Federation is called The Citadel. The black is meant to be the fear that we strike into the hearts of our foes, especially if they started the war. The Gold is our technological and economic might of our nation.

State Flag
Image

The blue is meant to be our mercy and honor, while the white is meant to represent purity of mind and body. The four stars are actually the four original governments of The Federation which banded together to form The Federation of Allied Governments, giving up their full autonomy for the greater good of their people.

A brown bear's-paw mark for the largest element in our nation's population (although we may have to add elements to symbolise some of the other groups, soon, as well...), and green for the woodlands in which they have traditionally lived.
The white acorn is one of the four symbols from the flag of our home region, the International Democratic Union, as a whole: Nations within the region are encouraged to include one or more of those symbols in their national flags, and we chose this one -- which represents care for the environment -- in preference to any of the others.
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

OoC: It's the flag of the Socialist International and France's Parti Socialiste

IC:

Red symbolizes the labor movement that was the foundation of the Republican revolution. The white hand holding a rose is the Republic's promise of a just future. The coincidence between the symbolism of the flag and social-democratic movements is not coincidental, as the majority of the Revolutionary thrust was of a social-democratic orientation. This has caused some consternation among non-socialist parties, such as the Libertarian Democrats and the Conservative Party for Justice and the Fatherland, but they have accepted the flag as indeed representing important symbols of the Revolutionary era.

"Saint Murray" is a remembrance of the late anarcho-capitalist Austrian economist Murray Rothbard. The international No symbol in the center thus becomes self-explanatory. The colours Columbia blue and white acknowledge Dr. Rothbard's alma mater.
