always a big mistake in any country is reducing options for public transport.
while almost everything else was going in the right direction in the 70s in the u.s.,
undermining local public transit and village to village rail services,
has played a major role in america's decent into current quagmire of public poverty.

"Massive French protests on the horizon" Now there's a headline that's never wrong.
A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. - James Madison.

Hi, french guy here.

As already mentionned, the first "goal" of the movement was to protest against a new taxe on gas. It wasn't a strike. BUT, being in France, workers syndicats (nurses for example) are also protesting, sometimes about the oil, sometimes about something different.
As for the dead one, it wasn't in Paris. As far as I know, it's something like more than 200 injured. Worst case is in the Réunion island, where it's way lore violent than in Metropolitan France.
The left-wing parti Les Insoumis are giving their support to the Gilles Jaunes. There are a lot of student movements. Oh and since the roads are blocked, there are a few gas stations who couldn't get their gas. Yep, gas shortage.

Oh and since I saw some nice "keep the muslims out !!!!" , most of the muslims in our country are not from the current migration wave but the one after the Algeria War and WW2. It doesn't mean that we don't have migrants but most of them are from... Albania. Most of the illegals here are temporary because they were heading to England.

As for the Métro... I don't live in Paris V:
At first, I was aiming for an utopia. Now, it's a reason to write bad-lore, upload pics on Imgur and explain how I became a spy for the USSR.

The 1970s were shit on a whole lot of levels. Most things were going wrong.
(Sky rocketing crime, decline of major cities (New York lost 10% of its population), stagflation, the energy crises, the steel crisis, deindustrialization, etc.)

The economic problems of the 70s were not primarily caused by the collapse of the railways, that was just one of the many things going wrong in the grimdark shitshow that was the 70s, nor is the collapse of the railways the reason for poverty caused by deindustrialization and bad trade trade policies begun in the 70s.

Plus while the US certainly has our problems today, it is not in “a quagmire of public poverty”, that is far to extreme, and our economy is not bad (even though it certainly could be better).

^ no, this protest is blatantly well seen amongst center-right people, perhaps lightly conservatives (center). the precendent was well seen amongst socialists, few center-left

because of analogy, i say about other countries. don t know what it is in real, besides what it is has got scarce importance for speeches and for the web, sadly.

so it seems 'the taste' of the protest, perhaps it will turn on another, perhaps from Usa it has got a different taste.

at the end of the road, government is more even more able to handle whatever, with always worsening protest, the other people loses morale -as protestors are seen ineptitude-

At least it's not Detroit!

Well sure Detroit did even worse than New York in the 70s (Detroit lost 20%) and unlike New York Detroit did not begin to recover in the 80s.
But still New York in the 70s was a disaster even though Detroit was more so. 1970s Detroit is a really low bar.

By now it's population has declined around 70%....

True. Though the 70s were a huge chunk of that total.
Like I said New York turned around in the 80s. Obviously Detroit never did.
But 70s New York still was really bad.

either way, you know there is a true downfall crisis in a country when protests are meaningless and worse than what they denounce (as this case).

Detroit is actually improving now. Downtown is kind of a hip place to be.

It's Cleveland and Milwaukee we should be worried about.
Work ethic. Work ethic.
