"The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory."
- General Dwight D. Eisenhower, D-Day Speech (1945)

The Second World War has produced perhaps more stories in fiction and fact than any war before or since, with no single war coming even close. Eighty million men fell into the bloodiest meat grinder in history, the last great war of industrialized killing, and many millions of soldiers and civilians walked out - in an age of radio and film, with the television age nipping at its heels, of course there would be countless stories about it. It was a turning point in history, or perhaps the third act of a massive turning point that was sounded by the guns of August - if World War One didn't end European dominion over worldly affairs, World War Two set it in stone that no longer could a single continent shape the course of history. It was truly a war to end any possibility of war like it again - one with twists and turns the likes of which Hollywood could not hope to match, so it settled for copying in perpetuity. And naturally, a story with so many twists and turns would inspire hundreds of "what-if" stories - What if Rommel succeeded in breaking the backs of the Immobile Farce? What if America had joined in earlier? What if Imperial China survived up until the Japanese invasion? And other, more fantastical ones - what if Germany truly had the Wunder Waffens it claimed to? What if men fought in walking-machines instead of tanks? What if super soldiers like Captain America truly did exist?

We travel now to one of the more exotic types of these what-if scenarios: the alternate reality. Whereas an alternate timeline merely changes a few events here and there, alternate reality changes everything from history to physical geography, but typically keeps the more basic themes of the event. The alternate reality we travel to for this RP is that of Valkyria Chronicles - a low fantasy strategy game series from Japan that, instead of focusing on the future or the middle ages, focuses on World War Two - or its world's version of it. The Second Europan War, starting circa February of 1935 CE over a material known as 'ragnite' which powered cities, fueled vehicles, served as an industrial and military explosive, and in the form of ragnaid was a crucial part of medical work. The great world powers of the world - the alliances known as the Atlantic Federation on one side, and the East Europan Imperial Alliance on the other, clash on the continent of Europa and on colonies throughout the world, with everyone caught in between - especially the oppressed Darcsen minorities, which the Imperials seem hellbent on exterminating - suffer for it.

A terminated ceasefire, and new technology - primitive aeroplanes, ragnite implosion engines, and Artificial Valkyria - men and women in suits of ragnite-powered armor that give them the power of the ancient (and seemingly extinct) Valkyria race that some worship as gods - tear open a new and bloody chapter to the war. In the east, the Oda Shogunate, a long ally of the Imperial Alliance, has formally joined the war on the Imperial side. After proceeding to rampage across the east coast of the Scythian continent, taking out first Federation colonies and then invading the Great Tsung, they made the mistake of inviting the wrath of the sole Federation-allied Great Power, up to then, a neutral state - the United States of Vinland.

That is where you all come in. But not as regular soldiers of the USVA, no - Valkyria Chronicles is ultimately about those units either destined for greatness or with greatness already expected of it. You are members of the Vinland Volunteer Army, Vinland's equivalent of our world's French Foreign Legion, where soldiers of any nation - even those Vinland is at war with, though they pass through greater scrutiny - may join. Even if all the officers and many NCOs are still from Vinland, largely due to the simple distance and cost of even getting there. Specifically, you're members of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Division, 5th Regiment, Company L - 'Loon' on paper, 'Lunatics' in words. A largely fresh-made company formed out of a mix of new recruits and older Volunteers from higher-lettered companies smashed against the Imps in the deserts of western Edinburghish Khumat. After coming within a few miles of the colonial capital of Jedsut, your unit (possibly you as well) pushed the Imps back into the dry Sektham Depression. You're here to push them back into their colony - or better yet, take the colony too.

The IA, formerly the EEIA, used a unified military for most of EWII, at least in
Europan and Cartegan theaters.
It is July of CE 1939, and the fires of Europa have at last spread to the entire world. A ceasefire signed in the early days of 1936 after the Federation's Edinburgh Navy drove a literal knife in the form of a cruiser into the thought-of-as-impenetrable citadel of Schwarzgrad, capital the Mascevan Empire, did not last long. A semi-neutral nation known as the Principality of Gallia which had fended off an Imperial invasion in 1935 fell into civil war between the government and a hyper-nationalist faction that had reacted negatively tot he revelation that the regent Princess Cordelia had revealed herself to be a Darcsen.

When it came to light that a Federation ambassador had pulled strings to orchestrate the war in order to mold Gallia into a nation more accepting of Federation control, even his arrest (and execution) could not prevent the Empire from pointing fingers. Pointed fingers progressed to saber rattling, and after it was revealed that the ambassador had plans to have the new Gallian government secretly attack the Empire using the Artificial Valkyria armored suit systems developed there, the war started once again, this time in earnest, with both sides fielding Artificial Valkyria against the hardest targets. Meanwhile, the Imperials proved their hypocrisy by using a combination of agitprop and assassinations to gain control of every nation around the Bay of Zwolle - a crucial step to further ensure the security of Masceva's sole deep water port in Europa that remained ice-free year round - including Zwolle itself, transformed into a fascist puppet state and member of the Imperial Alliance.

To the south, the Hattusans push into the Federation colonies of the Middle East, and threaten to squeeze into the colonies of northern Cartega, already threatened from the west by the EEIA's own colonies. Such a move would sever the eastern supply chain in Cartega, and allow the Imperials to focus their attention on the Federation-member Empire of Mande - and that would cost the Federation all of North Africa, and without access to their ports, the rest of the continent would soon fall into Imperial hands.

To the south-west and the east, the Non Aggression Pact - a union of nations on the continents of South Columbia and Scythia dedicated to staying out of war unless one is attacked, is falling apart. Gallia, a founding and the sole Europan member, left in the middle of May 1938 to fight alongside (but not officially with) the Atlantic Federation, citing excessive threats by the Imperials to its shipping routes. Increasing pressure from the Federation and Imperials is starting to convince politicians in the NAP to either support economically or even martially one side or the other - off the books, of course. Of the two continents, Scythia is arguably under the larger threat.

The Shogunate's armies in the mountains
of the Tai Republic.
January 2nd, 1938 CE. After years of building up its military might, and bases in its 'ally' of the Great Tsung, the Oda Shogunate launches a swift, bloody invasion of the Center of the Universe before turning south towards Lutetian Hindocathay and Edinburghish (and Gallian) Malaya, before pushing west through the Tai Republic and straight towards the Edinburghish Barma and the Edinburgh-controlled lands of the Raj beyond. To the east, they shocked the world by capturing the Edinburgh colony of Sawaikii, deep in the Drakean Ocean. With fertile soils and thousands of square kilometers of farmland to feed a comparatively small population, it was thought that not even a blockade could stop it. So the Shogunate Navy used ragnite-fueled rockets to overshoot the defenses and bombard the food storage facilities, farms, and distribute a fast-acting (but short-lasting) herbicide over much of the island. Sawaikii surrendered within the week. The speed of the Shogunate's assaults were as impressive as the brutal devotion of its soldiers to the Shogun, the ferocity with which they fought, and the terrifying disregard shown to those in the lands they captured.

But the Shogunate made one fatal mistake in the autumn of that year. In the early morn of September 7th, 1938, they attacked Ford Harbor in the Vinland state of Honolulu, destroying half the USVN's battleships, plus two airships and a experimental warship designed to carry heavier-than-air craft several times faster than the fastest airship. The same day, they attacked the port of Tayuman in the territory of Luzon. Three landings and two months later they had conquered the entire territory, and set their sights eastward and southward, towards the Irian Peninsula and the Vinland Ladrones further out in the Drakean. President Delano, within the very day of the initial attack, had sworn that they would gain the inevitable triumph of all free people over the tyranny of the Shogun and the Emperor - and at once gained his declaration of war against both the Shogunate and the Imperials.

Vinland was at war, and unlike the rest of the Federation, said one general to the New Randgriz Times, she would not rest for a mere ceasefire. In the Drakean, the Vinland Marines mobilized to defend the Melanesian islands and the Army to Edinburghish Barma, or at least stem the tide of the Shogunate until a proper counter-attack could be made to turn the tide of war in those regions of the world. In Northwest Cartega, the Army would land first in Mande and then twice in Zwollen Mauretania to lessen the pressure on Edinburghish Kemet - and hopefully help free all of north Cartega from the Empire. Here is where the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Division, 5th Regiment, a foreign legion of mechanized infantry in the Vinlandish style, shall have its first taste of war since the turn of the century.

Here, in the chapparal of eastern Mande, is where your journey begins.

Ragnite ore glows a pale blue when
exposed to light.
Ragnite. Known for centuries as an alternative to wood as fuel (in the form of clay ragnite) and as a medicine used to disinfect and accelerate the healing of wounds, it was not until the early eigtheenth century, with the invention of the steam engine, that ragnite truly became a critical resource. What competitors it had quickly fell to the wayside or to purely household use as industrialization spread - first across Europa, then to Vinland and the rest of the New World. Wood lacked the energy for anything but heating and what heat it provided was anything but certain, whale oil was prohibitively expensive on the industrial scale, and coal produced unpleasant-smelling fumes.

Solid ragnite produces no smell, and almost no waste - the ash of burning one pound of purified ragnite can be stored in a shot glass and is non-toxic, if not as useful as wood ash. When electrified and purified into the form of ragnaid, can rapidly accelerate the wound healing process and disinfect, with all but the largest wounds closing in seconds from the radiation of a few ounces of it - so long as the more dangerous things ragnaid emits is blocked by suitable radiation-proof glass, of course. Such a form is known as ragnoline. Powdered ragnite, preferably mixed with a stabilizer or packed tightly into cakes, is an explosive nearly as strong as nitroglycerin, yet both stabler and less toxic. On the other hand, thioragnite compounds, known as ragnides, are powerful nerve agents - most of which are banned by a variety of treaties, and even the Empire will not resort to using them. But perhaps most important of all forms would be liquid ragnite, known as ragnoline.

The first four-cycle ragnoline engine came about in roughly 1863 and was invented in Gallia. Around the world, the Mascevan Empire was undergoing a series of governmental forms and forging alliances that would become the Imperial Alliance, Vinland was in the final two years of its civil war, and Edinburgh was a decade or so from starting a race with the rest of Europa to colonize nearly every square inch of Cartega. But it was a certain Lutetian by the name of Karolus Deppel who had the idea of putting it on a carriage and seeing if he could get it to move on its own, on June the 3rd of 1886. The rest was history - motorized land vehicles that didn't need rails would change transportation forever. Enormously powerful and enormously efficient, ragnoline engines needed no exhaust pipes - just a pan for the ash, and radiators to let out the tremendous heat that burning ragnoline produced - heat enough to make the radiators, consisting of a ragnite/iron alloy, glow a bright blue. In military terms, it is the greatest flaw of ragnite power, as destroying the radiator will completely disable or even destroy the engine.

Twenty-two years later, almost to the day, the Edinburgh military would build a box of armor, put an engine in it, and treads around it, and the tank was born. And it was impeccable timing - by the turn of the twentieth century, Europa was running low on its own supplies of ragnite, and as the first Europan War showed, it was more than willing to tear itself to shreds to get more. The tiny nation of Gallia - politically neutral and possessing of only four colonies, even if two of which had proven quite profitable, had at the time a little over half the remaining ragnite ore supplly in Europa proper. Now they have a little over half, and even after fighting off the Empire twice, the Empire's greed has led them to invade a third time. This time, however, the Gallian military is backed up in earnest by the Federation (out of necessity), and after a bit of weeding within the upper echelons, has proven more than ready.

Darcsen civilians. Note the traditional clothing pattern.
The Darcsens are the oldest indigenous race on the Europan continent, with evidence of their existence dating back well beyond written language. They are easily identified from other races by their blue-black hair and eyes. Some claim that aquiline noses, with a relatively flat back to the skull, thin lips, narrow eye openings, and high cheekbones (compared to other, later, Europan races) are also signs of Darcsen heritage, but only hair and eye color are sure signs.

Two histories exist for the sorry state of the Darcsen, both revolving around an event known as the Darcsen Calamity. The more commonly accepted in the popular field of historical circles, and by far the most well known, is that the ancient Darcsens went on a rampage across Europa, killing an estimated million humans across the continent and causing untold ecological and economic damage to wild and domesticated beast alike before they were defeated by the godlike Valkyrur, a race of warriors from north of Europa who used Ragnite weaponry beyond even modern technology and abilities best described as magic to put an end to the Darcsen threat. A far less common theory, supported both by the Darcsens themselves and a number of ruins in the Barious Desert in southeastern Gallia, is that the opposite is true - the Valkyrur were raiders who waged war against the Darcsen and other inhabitants of Europa, a war they largely won, causing the very damage they blamed on the Darcsens.It's the latter theory that is the truth, though few outside of the archeological community know it as an absolute fact, and not many more outside of it consider it any more than Darcsen myth.
Not helping matters is religion - the faith of Yggdism, the largest in Europa and the largest by far of several religions that worships the Valkyrur as gods, may be ambivalent on the issue now but as recently as fifty years ago the bishops were quite adamant that the Darcsens were at fault. Non-practitioners find it quite curious that other Europan religions, such as Mos Maiorum, Asatru, and Christianity make no mention at all of who was at fault, and all three are at the least a few centuries older than Yggdism.

Regardless of which is the truth, the result was the same - Darcsens were stripped of their surnames across Europa (and ultimately the world) and driven from their former jobs and property, chased by prejudice wherever they went. Notably in the Mascevan Empire they have been subject to pogroms for the past several decades, as anti-Darcsen sentiment in its allies have been on the rise for at least that long, to the point that there are reports that the Imperials maintain concentration camps for captured Darcsens and prisoners of war alike. Outside of the confirmed camps that existed in the Gallian mining city of Fouzen in 1935 however, these rumors are dismissed as anything from 'hearsay' to the exaggerated claims of the Federation's propaganda machines by those looking to have the Federation commit men to 'strategically irrelevant' areas.

Some of the few jobs Darcsens have been allowed into are engineering, factory work, and mining. In recent years this has led to new stereotypes, as the oily chemicals used in ragnite mining give off a strong pungent smell that sticks aggressively to clothing. Many who work with them would describe their Darcsen colleagues variously as "doomy", "gloomy", "meek" or "not team-minded". While some of it may hold true because of their passive nature ("Darcsen's don't retaliate," after all), the engineering field has proven very good for the both the globe's image of Darcsens and their own self-image. Many veritable geniuses have been Darcsen, in recent years the most notable are perhaps the Gallian Darcsen Theimer, who revolutionized warfare with the development of turreted tanks, sloped armor, and the first assault rifle, and his daughter Isara (who was adopted by close friend Belgen Gunther), who is credited within Gallia for inventing the airplane, though most outside of Gallia credit Leon Schmidt as he was the one to build it after her death.

Artificial Valkyria fielded by the Gallian Revolutionary Army
in that nation's civil war, 1937
While the fate of the Darcsens after the Darcsen Calamity is certain, that of the Valkyrur that came as either liberators or conquerors is less well-understood. The most common theory is that they simply did not have enough of a population to maintain dominance, and interbreeding, early winters, and later migrations by various groups of peoples into Europa slowly eroded Valkyrur dominance over the continent, with the last sign of pureblooded Valkyrurs being from some time in the second century. Without pure blood to freely activate the mythical abilities ragnite and their ragnite weapons granted them, they had no means beyond any other race to control Europa, and by the end of the second century the Valkyrur's empire had collapsed. Little knowledge remains about their culture, beyond their language and the frequent use of spirals in government, martial, and religious imagery. Even their temples and weaponry were spirals - their temples were shaped like dreadnautilus shells, and the shields and lances that were their primary armaments have always been found to bear spiral patterns, and always made of ragnite far purer than modern refining can come close to. Such weapons would change form when held by a Valkyrur, which has only added fuel to their deification in some cultures. Their most devastating weapon, however, was their last - the Final Flame, in which the Valkyrur would set themselves off in a chain reaction of ragnite energy with the explosive force of thousands of tons of TNT.

While the Valkyrur are dead and gone, their ruins and weapons are very much here with us, and it is through these devices we have learned much about them. Enough, in fact, to mimic their abilities. The Artificial Valkyria System (AVS) is a comparatively recent invention - only having been made usable since the end of 1935 near the very end of the Mascevan Empire's invasion of Gallia, and only usable on a wide scale by the end of the Gallian Civil War. Both the concept and technology were developed by one Dr. Clementia Förster throughout the early 1930s in Thule, Masceva, and finally perfected in Gallia during their Civil War. How she managed this is tightly guarded by all three governments, but the results have been used by both Gallia and the major powers in the Second Europan War.

In basic terms, an AVS consists of two parts - the Artificial Valkyria itself (or selves), and a wireless power generator to supply them with more power via antennae on the back of the AV suit, as current technology is not to the point where an AV can operate at full strength without an external energy supply. The AV has prostheses specifically designed for the purpose grafted on them, to ease the strain on the body for being a conduit for massive amounts of ragnite-derived power, which is often still not enough for most humans, and many die in the conversion process or testing. When their powers are active, an AV exhibits the same signs as an active valkyrur - a cyan glow around their body and red eyes, plus bulging veins - believed to be a side effect of the AV process. More recent advances in miniaturization have given Artificial Valkyria a much more limited, though still formidable, range of attack and defense via backpack generators if their primary power source is disrupted or destroyed. The equipment borne by an AV consists of items that mimic the lance-and-shield combo of the ancient Valkyrur. On the right arm is an attached or hand-held particle cannon, and on the left a shield capable of projecting an energy field that can effectively block rounds from conventional firearms, though mortar, anti-tank, artillery, and firearms above 30mm in caliber can still damage them.

As the process to create an AV is dangerous, expensive, and dangerous, they are only used in limited numbers and only against targets regular formations cannot handle alone. The nature of their invention is a well-kept secret by the Gallian military, though the methods of creating them is much less so, as first the Federation then the Empire began fielding them by late 1938, with the Shogunate and Vinland catching up in 1939. The location off their inventor is likewise unknown - Dr. Förster seems to have vanished in the breeze well before the end of the Gallian Civil War, with reports of her existence and experiments all across the steppes of the central IA, and the frigid forests to the west.

There are reports, though most are less than rumors, that the Mascevans and even Vinland have been researching an alternative means of gaining the power of the Valkyrur - genetic experiments on women with the blood of the Valkyrur in their veins, their powers triggered by extreme emotional or physical trauma and set loose on the war in secret. In the Empire as supersoldiers, and in Vinland as living weapons. Such things are mere hearsay, but it is hard to prove one way or another - after all, if the legends are true, there are few who could survive the wrath of a real Valkyrur to say one way or another. They're true. But none here have the clearance to know that.

The concept of foreign soldiers serving in a nation's military for one reason or another - fame, glory, or simply shared ideals - is not an uncommon one in history. The Continental Army that fought as patriots in the Vinlander Revolution fielded of a number of soldiers from the Mascevan, Lutetian, and even the Edinburghish Empires. However, it was not until the formation of the Lutetian Empire's Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère) in the early ninenteenth century that anyone had the idea of making a formal unit of foreign soldiers, and it is this Foreign Legion that all like it are based on.

The Vinland Volunteer Army (though it is by strength a corps), as Vinland's equivalent is called, was formed during the early days of the Vinland Civil War. After a speech in the capital city, President Lincoln was approached by a group of soldiers from Wesel, Gallia, Pictland, and Zwolle, all of whom wished to fight "for this most noble of causes," as the leader of their group said. Touched by their offer, he said he would "see what he could do" for them, and authorized the formation of first a regiment, then a whole division, of "volunteers of All Nations" willing to fight for the cause that men might be free. The Vinland Volunteers were formed, and apart from a four-year period after the Civil War when they were disbanded, they have been in continuous existence ever since. They have likewise served in every campaign since their founding, except the Indian Wars - as it was felt, due to the large number of Native Vinlanders at the time, that the Volunteers would suffer unacceptable levels of desertion. Since 1885 however, Volunteers have had the right to refuse to serve against their fatherland or people, should such a situation arise.

From the date of its foundation to the present day, the overall structure and makeup of the Vinland Volunteers has remained stable. It is the only part of the Vinland military (apart from a handful of segregated units) in which officers may be of any color or even Darcsen, as all that is required to become an officer in the Volunteers is to prove that one was born in or is a civilian of Vinland. Foreign members can also become officers and citizens par le sang versé, that is, any injury that would in a normal unit grant a Purple Heart would also be given the opportunity to become citizens barring all of the normal process except the civics and history tests, and are thus immediately eligible for the officer's courses. As of May 1939, roughly 25% of Volunteers are themselves from Vinland (excluding officers), the remainder come from nearly every country or colony on Earth.

Over the years of its existence, the Volunteers have gathered some odd quirks. They are the only unit in the Vinland Army to still use the sunken-topped kepi that was common in the Vinland Civil War, if not where helmets are used. It was the last unit in the Vinland Army to have horse cavalry in a combat role, retiring its last horses to the training roles in 1937, only bringing them out for parades. And speaking of parades, it is the only corps in the Vinland Army to not have a parade/display team, instead the entire corps is expected (and trained) to perform parades, tattoos, and drills itself - which it is expected to excel in, after all, if you can't twirl a ten pound rifle like a ten-ounce baton for hours in the hot sun, how can you be expected to use it to kill Imps, right? Right.

Brown Automatic Rifle
Length: 1215 mm
Barrel: 610 mm
Caliber: .30-06 Westchester
Magazine: 20 round box, 40 round box
50 round box, 100 round box
Weight: 17.8 lbs

An automatic battle rifle designed by John Moses Brown and built by the Brown Arms Company in Deseret. While it loosely bears resemblance to the Edinburghish Lenfield rifle, the resemblance is only superficial. Designed for trench warfare assaults with the rifle carried by a sling in its initial versions, the First Europan War ended before it could be truly tested in that purpose, though time has shown it would have performed well enough at that. As it is, it is used primarily as something between a light machine gun and a rifle, truly excelling in neither, but being better at the former than the latter due to its high weight. Initially produced without a magazine above 20 rounds, in practice this was found to be completely unacceptable and 50- and 100-round box magazines were developed at the request of the Edinburgh Army, and soon implemented into the Vinland Army's use. This resulted in a heating issue, which led to the implementation of an air-cooled barrel shroud.

Manufacture d'Armes de St. Jeanne 26 Light Machine Gun
Length: 1080 mm
Caliber: .308 Westchester
Magazine: 25 round box, 40 round box
50 round box, 100 round box
Weight: 19.7 lbs

A Lutetian design based on the Brown Automatic Rifle, it entered Vinland service shortly before the start of the war as a stopgap measure until a proper light machine gun can be built. Brown Arms got the license to build the extremely effective and popular Ruhm MG, a Mascevan design, three years before officially entering the war, but rising tensions resulted in the manufacturing equipment never being shipped - so until new manufacturing equipment can be produced from near-scratch, or captured from Masceva and reverse-engineered, the MAS26 and BAR are the primary light machine guns of the Vinland Army. Other, much larger machine guns exist - such as the M2 Brown .50, the Edinburghish Vixim Gun, and the M1909 Browning .30, however these are all both too heavy to be considered single user and, unlike the equally heavy mortars, are not designed to be used by one person.
Mortars

M2E11 Sanders
Length: 1398 mm
Caliber: 81.2 mm
Weight: 30.9 lbs

An infantry support weapon developed in Vinland by the Forus Arms Factory. As the army could not supply an artillery vehicle for every infantry unit, this portable grenade launcher became an invaluable alternative for soldiers on the frontlines. The downscaling, collapsibility, and light weight are all possible due to a ragnite compression firing system developed by Dr. Riley Miller, a Gallian who worked on a number of Vinland weapons products involving ragnite during the early 1930s before she joined the Edinburgh Army as a science officer and grenadier (the term used by Edinburgh and Vinland for users of single-person mortars). Thanks to these developments, a mortar once requiring a full team of operators now requires a single soldier. Preferably one skilled in calculus.

MA2E10 Elias
Length: 1440 mm
Caliber: 81.2 mm
Weight: 32.2 lbs

A modified version of the Sanders mortar, also produced and developed in Vinland by the Forus Arms Factory. The shells are of the same size, but the warheads contain denser Ragnite packing and powder of superior purity for greater firepower. The barrel is rifled, removing the need for fin stabilizers as found in the Sanders. Thanks to these changes, the rounds both look and behave more like mortar rounds. Sadly, the accuracy is lower than any of the three single-person mortars used by the Vinland Army, though the larger blast radius does make up for this. The superior firepower makes it suitable for targeting vehicles.
Image
MS2E7 Hartmann
Length: 1503 mm
Caliber: 81.2 mm
Weight: 44.2 lbs

Produced by the Forus Arms Factory. A modified version of the Sanders, reworked to improve accuracy. The mount is comprised of two legs and a reversible spiked base to increase this parameter. The largest downside of this is that it also tremendously increases the weight, to laborious (and some claim ridiculous) levels. While Forus and the Vinland and Edinburgh Armies all claim it is still a single-person weapon, it is rarely used as such; instead it is most often mounted on trucks and halftracks, the latter most often in pairs. As a result, no other military considers it "man-portable".
Pistols

Brown Hi-Power
Length: 197 mm
Barrel Length: 119 mm
Caliber: 9x19mm Parabellum
.40 S&W
Magazine Capacity: 13 round stick
30 round drum
Weight: 2.2 lbs

Designed to replace the older M1901 which it has mostly failed to do, instead becoming more of a replacement, the Brown Hi-Power is the "official" pistol of the Vinland Army, being the only one it actually supplies anything but rounds and magazines for - any other handgun, soldiers must purchase themselves. Which they do on occasion, some preferring the M1901's larger caliber or the aesthetics of older revolvers - so long as said gun isn't black powder, the Vinland Army largely turns a blind eye to any alternate means of personal defense in handgun size.
Rifles
Image
GSR-25
Length: 1350 mm
Barrel Length: 910 mm
Caliber: 7.92x57mm Theimer
Magazine Capacity: 5 round internal
Weight: 8.8 lbs

An upgraded version of a Gallian rifle initially designed for use by cavalry, this version of the GSR has a further extended barrel than the original GSR-XX models. It has a built-in scope mount and is usually shipped with the scope, which has led to cracked scopes in the past, which is why it is now shipped with two spare scopes. Built in an era of semi-automatic rifles dominating, its bolt action seems obsolete, but snipers swear by it, so the bolt-action stays - a reputation it maintained, as the GSR-XX line were the most accurate rifles in the Second Europan War, and remained in service long after. The GSR-XX's primary other advantage over the GSR-X is the cleaning rod and maintenance kit stored under the barrel and in the stock respectively, ensuring maintenance is never far from reach.
Image
LF-ASR
Length: 1298 mm
Barrel Length: 779 mm
Caliber: 7.62x54mm Mascevan
Magazine Capacity: 6 round internal
Weight: 9.7 lbs

Within the Edinburgh Army at the start of the Second Europa War, there were no true 'sniper rifles'; unlike Gallia the Edinburghers used older, longer versions of battle or cavalry rifles, or selected high-accuracy variants of their Lenfield rifle. The LF-ASR was designed specifically for snipers, and is one of three notable firsts - It is the first rifle built with rails, the first combat rifle with a thumb hole in the stock, and the first sniper rifle with a self-loading mechanism. Some claim it to be the first rifle specifically designed for snipers, but the GSR entered service a full six months earlier, despite being designed later. It is designed for burst-fire, firing off half of its bullets with a single pull of the trigger in quick succession. A downside of this ability is its inferior accuracy to its contemporaries - the Lenfield Wasp it was designed to replace, and the GSR-XX it directly competes with in the international arms trade market. The Vinland and Lutetian Armies uses both - the GSR-XX as a sniper rifle, and the LF-ASR as a marksman's rifle.
Image
M1C Patterson
Length: 1100 mm
Barrel: 610 mm
Caliber: .30-06 Westchester
Magazine: 10 round nondetachable
Weight: 10.9 lbs

A standard-issue rifle designed by John D. Patterson and produced by Westchester. Initially designed to replace the rifle Vinland's Expeditionary Force used in the First Europan War (which was by then almost twenty years old), the selection process for the Patterson was long and arduous, itself taking almost ten years before production finally began in 1928. Thanks to being largely wood, it has managed to save weight, though later versions (such as the M1C) feature metal around much of the barrel for increased durability. However, even now it is starting to show its age - many nations are beginning to switch over to external magazines for their primary rifles, and some, such as Masceva and Gallia, are experimenting with fully automatic rifles as their primary soldier's weapon. It can be used to fire stick-handled grenades with a frequently-supplied mount attached to the end of the barrel, though as stick grenades are not standard issue to the Vinland Army it is rarely used.
Rockets
Image
M2EQ
Length: 2835 mm
Caliber: 60mm
Magazine Capacity: 3 rockets
Weight: 22.7 lbs

An anti-tank lance produced by the United States of Vinland's Federal Alchemic Company. A well-rounded weapon that fires anti-tank projectiles in the form of rockets. It was designed to be fired under the arm while firing for additional stability. A protective cover prevents the user from being burned while firing. Originally designed for a two-man team, the addition of a clip feed system has enabled it to be used by one person. Later models, such as the M2EQ-12 currently being delivered, feature an additional blast shield and a scope to improve aiming. However, it isn't clear if it helps accuracy very much - whether due to the weight or the simple mechanics of a finless rocket-propelled grenade, the cause is unknown for its low accuracy.
Image
SB9
Length: 2965 mm
Caliber: 60mm
Magazine Capacity: 3 rockets
Weight: 34.2 lbs

An extensively modified version of the Federal Alchemic Company's M2EQ anti-tank lance, redesigned with enhanced firing accuracy in mind. Engineers found that different types of rocket fuel performed best in different temperatures. To deal with this, summer and winter variants of the 60mm rockets both the SB9 and the M2EQ use have been produced. An adjustable sight has been built-in (as opposed to mounted on as in the M2EQ-11 and later) to greatly improve accuracy, and the 'barrel' has been lengthened and rifled to further improve accuracy. A protective shield was added to improve protection to the lancer, however this in combination with other modifications have drastically increased weight, to the point that it can hardly be considered a single-person weapon. There are plans to rectify this, though most involve simply increasing accuracy and magazine capacity (and weight) further and declaring it a crew-served weapon.
Submachine Guns
Image
Mags MG
Length: 661 mm without stock, 790 mm with
Barrel: 335 mm
Caliber: 9x19mm Parabellum
Magazine Capacity: 20 round stick, 30 round stick
40 round drum, 80 round saddle
Weight: 7.8 lbs

A submachine gun designed in Gallia by Theimer, and produced under license by the Vulcan Arms Company. Due to Gallia's universal conscription policy, the gun is designed to be as light and user-friendly as possible, so that even civilians who do not undergo military training can use them - indeed, the legality of automatic weapons like this in Gallia is in part to reduce the need to train conscripts. Although it lacks firepower compared to the Robinson and Riesling, it is popular in countries with conscription and/or female soldiers due to its light weight, portability, and impressive accuracy. Curiously, the Edinburgh and Lutetian Armies do not use it, but Vinland does. Later models, such as the ones used by Vinland, come with a longer barrel and detachable wooden stock. Gallia currently uses a model with an even longer water-cooled barrel for increased RoF, but Vinland has not adopted it due to its complexity and added weight.
Image
Riesing SMG
Length: 1115 mm with stock extended
Barrel: 383 mm
Caliber: .45 Riesing
Magazine Capacity: 25 round stick, 35 round stick
50 round drum, 80 round saddle, 100 round drum
Weight 11.3 lbs

A modified version of the Robinson SMG, designed to handle larger magazines with bullets that have more potent gunpowder. In order to save weight, more of it is metal than in the standard Robinson, especially the stock, which is now a folding metal stock instead of the detachable wooden one of the Robinson. Further reworking has also helped dampen recoil during automatic fire, increasing accuracy. However, the stock has two great weaknesses. Firstly, it is fragile and does not hold up to continuous stress for long; complaints have come in about it snapping off. Secondly, even when it doesn't, the end points often end up more pointy than many soldiers are comfortable, leading to its unfortunate nickname of "Shikawa Pitchfork", or just "Pitchfork".
Image
Robinson SMG
Length: 643 mm without stock, 820 mm with
Barrel: 289 mm
Caliber: .45 ACP
Magazine capacity: 20 round stick, 30 round stick
50 round drum
Weight: 10.6 lbs

Produced by the Walt Ordinance Company in the United States of Vinland. Machine guns in the First Europan War were too heavy to be portable. After the war, engineers confronted the idea of giving machine guns to foot soldiers, and so the Robinson was created as the first true submachine gun. Many other models of SMG were produced later, but the Robinson's simplicity to manufacture en masse, light weight, and high caliber made it a lasting staple of issue to the militaries of Vinland and its allies. It's a common issue to soldiers, who refer to it with such names as "Robber", "Robin Hood", "Hood", "Trench Broom", "Trench Sweeper", "Shikawa Typewriter", "Shikawa Piano", and others. The variant currently in production comes with a detachable wooden stock, older variants have a fixed stock, and the earliest variants have none at all. A barrel-mounted flamethrower has been developed for it known as the Flame Whip that sacrifices both range and capacity for speed and ease-of-use. The 'tank' is about the size of a grenade and only has enough fuel for a second at most, however it doubles as a molotov in emergency situations. The Flame Whip's mount clamp has a slide that lets it attach to most other barreled weapons, though it is rarely used by those not using SMGs.
Vehicles
Image
M3 Autotruck
Length: 6.1 m
Width: 1.9 m
Height: 2.26 m
Weight: 9 tons
Top Speed: 80 km/h
Engine power: 300 hp @ 4000 rpm
Weapons: Various
Passengers: 12

The standard halftrack of Vinland, and in its primary form, the most common APC in Vinland service and (eventually) the war on the Allied side. Derived from the earlier M2 Autotruck, itself derived from a Lutetian design, over sixty thousand would eventually be produced in a wide number of variants, many of which were nonstandard. It was designed to use as many commercial, off-the-shelf parts as possible in order to reduce costs of production. Though it was unpopular at first due to its middling armor and (at first) lack of a roof, it had far better passenger capacity than earlier Edinburghish designs that the Atlantic Federation had been using before its introduction. M3 Autotrucks were used on every front, and by every member of the Atlantic Federation and allies, at one point or another in the war. One of its variants is especially notable to historians for being the first allied vehicle to be equipped with an anti-air gun that could be fired without dismounting it from the vehicle.
Image
M4 Minuteman
Length: 5.9 m
Width: 4.5 m
Height: 3.05 m
Weight: 31 tons
Top Speed: 52 km/h
Engine power: 500 hp @ 4500 rpm
Weapons:
Steiner M1935 36/75mm cannon
Brown 7.62mm machine gun
Crew: Commander/gunner/radio operator
Driver
Loader

The standard medium tank of Vinland. Early models of the Minuteman have the main cannon ammunition stored on the left and right sides, which has caused many cases of induced explosions when enemy fire penetrates the armor. As a counter-measure, many soldiers welded supplementary armor plates to the sides, a feature that was standardized with the M4E3 version, as well as a more powerful engine and a faster traverse rate to deter would-be attackers from attempting to flank it. Other modifications include strengthened turret armor and a reinforced radiator, making hits to the radiator less likely to cause an overheat failure. Popular with soldiers, though it still tends to suffer from overheating.

Mercury Mk V - "Man o' War"
Length: 5.9 m
Width: 5.4 m
Height: 2.27 m
Weight: 18 tons
Top Speed: 40 km/h
Engine power: 300 hp @ 4500 rpm
Weapons:
Royal Ordnance QF 75mm cannon
Brown 7.62mm machine gun
Crew: Commander/gunner/radio operator
Driver
Loader

One of several "infantry" tanks produced for Edinburgh, that is, a tank designed to support infantry rather than function on its own. While often believed to be named after the Reman god for its speed, it is in fact named after the Valkyrur Mercurius known as one of several valkyrie-patrons of horsemen. Highly armored for a tank of its size, yet maneuverable for a tank of its weight, the Mercury is designed primarily to operate in situations where larger infantry tanks would not be suitable. It's small size makes it good at hiding, and the Mark V's fast-loading and hard-hitting cannon makes it more than a match for much larger tanks, though it still suffers from the poor armor around the driver's window, which most crews have dealt with by simply welding on more armor. The many flat surfaces however are much less easy to deal with.

As Abigail's tank, Man o' War is her replacement for the tank she had in the Edinburgh Army, another Mark V by the name of "Potoooooooo" or "Potatoes" that was destroyed by a landmine in an ambush in northern Tai. It features its name painted on the barrel, in addition to a camouflage in stripes of greenish-yellow and orange-pink that Abigail herself came up with to handle the mix of scrub and desert in northeastern Mande. Further modifications include sloped spaced armor around the turret and flat skirt armor over most of the tread wheels. It also features eleven kill marks - four trucks, three armored vehicles, four tanks, all from her service as commander of Potatoes.

+++Name: Matthew Douglas "Mad Dog" Ryougi
+++Age: 20
+++Sex/Gender: Male
+++Sexual Orientation: Straight
+++Physical appearance: 6'2", unusually tall for someone of half-Yamato descent, broad-shouldered and square-chested. He has the characteristic nose and eyes of his mother's Yamato heritage, as well as the straight black hair, but the rest of his features are largely his father's Northlander ones - squared (if narrow) chin, high cheekbones, and his parents genes fight on overall face shape resulting it being of average height and width, though on the narrow side. His skin is tanned, more so than one would expect due to the altitude of the Asinwati mountains that he calls home. The scars on his face - one across the nose, one downward from his right eye and one going straight up along the left side of the bridge of his nose, all come from an unfortunate encounter with a small wolverine, though he will often grossly exaggerate both its size and ferocity.
+++Identifying Marks: The scars on his face, most notably. Almost never without his gold-and-red plaid scarf when possible, which is only tolerated because he usually keeps it under his jacket and it's thin enough it can be used as an ascot of sorts.
+++Rank: Captain

+++Nationality: Vinlander
+++Ethnicity: Yamatoan/Nordlander
++++Religion: Episcopalian (Christian)
+++Birthplace: Hellgate, Nehinaw
+++Permanent Residence: Custer, Kammedeka
+++Criminal History: None
+++Skills: Matt has a good eye for shooting and terrain, and is a surprisingly calm thinker when it comes to commanding troops, even if his own actions in combat seem to contradict this. A cautious commanding officer, his plans usually revolve around getting as many of his troops out safely as possible, and unless explicitly ordered otherwise, his plans will involve this. Actually listens to subordinates' suggestions, a rare trait among officers. Good, if blunt, about mediating disputes. A skilled shot, would have been a sniper if it did not suit his fighting style. Tougher than he looks, and he looks pretty tough - has a very high pain tolerance, apparently as a result of training. Stronger than the average soldier, able to easily lift even the Hartmann mortar and carry it as it's technically supposed to be. An expert hunter as well. Speaks fluently native Edinburghish, conversational Yamatoan, passable Sosoni, and Very Bad Lutetian.

+++Psychological analysis: Not unlike a lot of Vinland soldiers of Yamato descent, he seems to be unconsciously seeking the approval of ghosts - those of his ancestors in the Home Islands, and those of the founding fathers of Vinland. It's as if all the propaganda about the Shogunate's brutality and the rhetoric of all Yamato-Vinlanders being double agents gave him something to prove - his loyalty, his determination, his sheer force of will for The Cause, all of which he has in spades. He fights harder, studies harder, and at least tries to lead better because he firmly believes that he must. His force of will appears in other areas too - while he will usually listen to subordinates, he has an incredible ability to be stubborn, and in terms of injuries he simply refuses to go down until the last man is cared for. Talkative normally, and sometimes even in combat (so long as it's not on the radio, where he is often brief nearly to the point of tactlessness towards all but the most high-ranking officers), though tight-lipped about military affairs, frequently downplaying them, unless they involve talking strategy or weapons, which he is good enough at. Has little tolerance for racial prejudice within his ranks, and can be defensive when it's directed at him.
+++Weaknesses: His stubbornness can get the better of him at times, which can lead to make mistakes. He also has a vengeant streak, which can lead to him pressing attacks a little too hard. His choice of weapon is not truly suited to him, and his accuracy suffers somewhat. A bit of a braggart about past, non-military feats.
+++Likes/dislikes: Enjoys hunting, venison, simple meat-and-starch dishes, the occasional seafood preferably cooked in the Yamato style, cool clear nights, the mountains, cold beer and warm whiskey. Dislikes the beach understandably, doesn't much care for hot weather or excessive leafy greens, doesn't much like sweet things - prefers candies to be sour and tends to give his actual chocolate ration away as opposed to the abomination that is "ration chocolate" which he either keeps or tosses. Detests racism and racists. Doesn't much get along with Yggdists, being Christian himself.
+++Fears: Dying pointlessly.

+++Equipment: Robinson SMG, Ragnaid canister, map, binoculars, duck caller, bayonet, pistol, woolen gold and red scarf.

+++Age: "Twenty-two as of February."
+++Sex/Gender: "Couldn't you tell by my glorious visage? I'm a woman, of course."
+++Sexual Orientation: "I like boys."
+++Physical appearance: "Aww look, you have an absolutely lovely picture of me from back when I was stationed in Emden, right before heading off to Tai! I was dressed up as a matador, and quite handsomely if I do say so myself! Now get rid of it. I don't have that face anymore, hell I barely have a face. Damn Shogunate mine blew half my old tank apart, burned most my face off - all my nose, most of my lips, my forehead... only saved my eyebrows and enough lip to close my mouth with some grafts. The rest? Covered in plates of metal. There are better methods, sure, but they felt bloody awkward on my face, and what's worse they made it harder to breathe. This metal face of mine looks like someone cobbled it together out of shrapnel, but it fits what's left of my face well enough, and it feels comfortable - and that's all I give a damn about. I got similar burns on my arms and legs, losing half my right middle and all the ring finger as well as two toes on my left foot, but I don't care about that. Oh, and I'm much more of an hourglass figure than that, and the top end of that hourglass was largely saved, thank you. Can't say the same for my stomach, or my backside. Call it providence, or maybe covering them with my arms."
+++Identifying Marks: "I've got an iron face and half my bloody body's burned to bits."
+++Rank: "I'm a staff sergeant according to you Yanks."

+++Nationality: "Edinburghish to the core."
+++Ethnicity: "Anglian to the very bones."
+++Religion: "I'm what you'd call an Edinburghish Yggdist, that means I don't follow some fool in a blue hat in Reme. Rather like the Edinburghish Church, which doesn't follow some fool in a gold hat in Reme."
+++Birthplace: "Mamucia, Cheshire, Anglia, United Kingdom of Edinburgh."
+++Permanent Residence: "Apartment 212, 223 Little Oxington Road, Mamucia, Edinburgh. That's where my mail goes, at least."
+++Criminal History: "Threw a snowball full of piss at a constable once when I was five, does that count?"
+++Skills: "I fancy myself a good tank commander. I have a good idea of where tanks can go, where tanks should go, and where tanks, at least my tank, will go. As my model of tank requires the commander to also be the gunner (though not the loader), I'm good with the heavy cannon, too. I cook a dead good steak, I can actually hit what I'm aiming at from the gun ports, and I can throw a grenade farther than just about anyone in the unit. My face can also bounce off small arms fire, so I suppose that counts as a skill. I can speak Lutetian drunk and Gallian drunker."

+++Psychological analysis: Subject is clearly suffering from post-traumatic stress but refuses to admit it or even acknowledge she has a problem. Utterly devoted to the war effort and Edinburgh, she has already given much of her body away to it yet feels she still has more to give - possibly a form of survivor's guilt as her tank was the only one to survive the ambush in Tai that burned her face away. Cheerful and friendly, with a casual word choice that lends itself to her status as an enlistee and not an officer. Loyal to a fault to her fellow unit members, frequently defends them if she feels they are being unfairly treated or judged, especially on basis of race, which is ironic as she herself admits she is not as trusting of Darcsens as she is of other members of her units, with the sole exception of her old driver, Mihaly, who died in Tai. Talkative and joking, even in combat, only seems to shut up when ordered to or in combat, when she is clipped and tactful.
+++Weaknesses: "I'm not exactly the best under fire when I'm not surrounded by metal. I am told I get a bit jumpy-like. Sometimes I have nightmares of when, you know..."
+++Likes/dislikes: "I like tanks, I like the thrill of riding, I like a good warm meal and a good Edinburghish beer, not the piss swill they give us out here. I like the low hills of west-central Anglia. I enjoy a good hunt, when I can get around to having one. I bloody love Soccer - Mamucia United is my religion, Old Trafford is my church, and on my knees I worship. Also love horse racing, that's why I name my tanks after horses. Don't much care for Ierans who want independence when there's a war on. I don't like sour food, I don't like fish."
+++Interests: "I've always liked machinery, and I like keeping up-to-date on the news. I was actually planning on becoming a journalist before all this started."
+++Fears: "I don't much fancy the idea of being caught in a burning tank, you know? After what happened, it's a wonder I can stand to look at a burning fireplace."

+++Equipment: "Besides my tank? I've got a Mags MG, one of your Yank pistols, a knife, a ragnaid canister, my microphone, ear protection, some maps, some Zhonguo pens, some tea bags and a kettle in here, too."
+++Biography:
+++RP Sample: :^)
+++Why you fight: "I have connections in the media, friends if you will, that have seen... some horrid things. They were what got me into it. And if you'd seen the things I've seen, what humans can do to each other, you'd know there's no stopping this war without one side laying down their guns for good."
+++Theme Song: "I'm Dreaming of Home's probably my favorite so- what, too sappy?"

At one point one of the wealthiest nations on Earth due to its still-enormous gold deposits, hard times and the spread of Islam across the Mediterranean by the sword have failed to dampen the will of the Mansa that rule the strongest state in Cartega - even if that distinction is made less impressive by it being one of only two independent states in Cartega, and the power of the Mande seeming less impressive after their loss half a century ago of most of their continental landmass and northern coast to Europans. Made up almost entirely of Cartegans of one race or another, Mande is still often considered more a Europan nation with close historical ties especially to Emden - Emden's colony on the east peninsula is, in fact, the only one Mande willingly gave up. An industrial powerhouse in its own right, it is still a few years behind in military technology compared to most of Europa, which has led to the capture of Tumbutu to Mascevan forces.

One of the oldest nations in existence, Bis can trace its lineage back almost as far as the Great Tsung, though it must be pointed out that Bis has never been even close to as relevant as the Middle Kingdom. And that suits Bis just fine, as it is content to be a regional power, and the only independent nation left that is truly on the Cartegan continent. A founding member of the Non-Aggression Pact along with Veracruz, Gallia, and Bod, Bis has tried its damndest to stay out of anyone's way, even as the Scramble for Africa felled its neighbors to Europan swords, even as Zwolle tried not once, but twice, to invade it - the second time with chemical weapons. But Bis has stayed strong and resisted the threat of invasion, as it always has. It is one of a handful of nations with a Christian majority.

One of several states freed from the decline of the Hittusian Empire, Alast has the sore luck of being landlocked and only having two major 'ports' on the mighty Istros that rises in the Republic of Assen (though the author is sure that Alast can take some comfort in that the Istros doesn't become economically useful until it is well outside of Assenian land), which has stunted the former principality's growth. Formed as a union of the principalities of Moldava and Zwolania, Alast is one of the few counties to free itself from Hittusia's slow death mostly bloodlessly. Unfortunately for it, its constitutional monarchy was disposed of by a plane crash, and an extremely pro-Mascevan monarch has been put in its place, who is notorious throughout Europa for being harsh on his citizens and harsher on Darcsens to a level that eclipses that of the Tsar of Masceva.

Located in central Europa, the lands of Assen have been ruled by many a country, though historically their rulership has mostly been alternated between the Lutetians and the Mascevans. At the moment their government is mostly pro-Lutetian, with the remainder being largely in favor of neutrality, a la Gallia - something that would be very difficult considering their lack of coastline or usable major rivers, though they do have one of the largest train depots in central Europa. As a partial result, the Atlantic Federation has put a lot of effort into supporting the legitimate government of Assen against pro-Mascevan (and more importantly for them, pro-neutrality) factions/terrorists/depends-who-you-ask. One of the largest Federation bases in central Europe is located in northeastern Assen, not far from said train depot. As a partial result of such a massive military presence, not one inch of Assen land has fallen to the Imps since the end of the ceasefire.

One of the world's Great Powers, and one of four in Europa, of which it and Masceva are the most powerful, depending on who you ask. First arising as a singular kingdom on the northern half of Alba, the greater of the two Alban Isles, it soon swelled to a regional then a great European power, with its chief rivals being Lutetia and Emden, the former the more important. After crushing the Emden Armada, Edinburgh became a naval power almost without rival, and it spread its colonies across the ocean to the New World. About a century after the success of its first colony and it united with Brython and Anglia to the south, and Ieran to the west. A series of failed wars against Emden in an attempt to take its colonies in South Columbia strained its budget, and another war against Lutetia strained it to the point that its taxes on its own North Columbian colonies became unbearable for the colonists. One war later, and Vinland was born as a separate colony, forcing Edinburgh to turn its attention eastward and southward for colonies. Taking over the Hinduraj, carving a path through Cartega and colonizing much of Oceania left Edinburgh as one of the greatest military, economic, and cultural forces in the world, a position it holds onto for dear life. A great sea separates it from the Imperials, but not its colonies, and only distance, weather, and the Royal Navy protect its shores from the dreaded Hun.

The culture of Ellon is one of the oldest in the world. Located in a central position along the north coast of the Mediterranean with a warm current passing around the peninsula, its location was ripe for the birthplace of democracy, the Orthodox Christian Church, Southern Yggdism, and, according to itself, cultivation of the olive. The cradle of Western civilization, it was in decline for most of its post-Byzantium existence, wars between the Southern Yggdists and Orthodox Christians (which the Christians ultimately won) left it rife for takeover by the Hattusians. But the land that gave birth the idea of democracy would not be ruled by others, and it was the first Europan nation to throw off the chains of bondage, which started a chain reaction that continues to this day. Sadly, it fell to the Imperials during the Battle of Maltaverne in 1938, where the Mascevans and Zwollens captured the third-largest ragnite deposit in southern Europe after four months of siege. Athina held out for another six weeks, but without ragnite to fuel it, the nation surrendered. The government-in-exile currently resides in Edinburgh.

At one point, Emden was the supreme naval power in the world, with the Yggdist Papacy granting it supreme dominion over the New World - partially out of fear of the Emden Armada. At one point, it laid claim to the legacy of the mighty Reman Empire, a claim contested by Zwolle (by geography), Hattusa (by conquest), Erlon (by political descendancy), and Masceva (by the theology of the fallen Western Reman Empire, the empire's last remnant). At one point it might have had the might to claim that. Alas, in the sixteenth century it gambled to claim the Alban Isles for its own, provoking the wrath of all of Yggdistdom and Christendom alike, and ultimately its armies were crushed, and its navy, its pride, broken by the Edinburgh Fleet. Emden's dreams of world domination went down in flames, and with it went their dominance - four centuries of steady, slow, agonizing decline. It had to scrabble for what few colonies in Africa it had, and naming the Canaries and Emdenan Magrheb as part of the Kingdom instead of mere colonies is but a last gasp of a dying empire to many. Ostensibly a member of the Atlantic Federation, this is purely for political reasons - in practice, Emden remains neutral and contributes almost nothing to the war effort besides ports.

Gallia is known throughout Europa as the mouse that roared. Sure, it has quite a sum of money - Gallia sits on the largest network of ragnite deposits in Europa and the fourth largest on Earth, and it rakes in substantial amounts of ducats from its Congo in the form of rubber; Surinam in the form of bauxite, sugar, and gold; and Malaya in the form of spices - its desire to extract as much as possible of those resources has led to criticism of past archdukes as being needlessly cruel. It also produces weapons of quality that attracts nations the world over - Vinland, Edinburgh, Veracruz, and the Great Tsung all use Gallian firearms. Mountains to the east and south ensure that Gallia is also strategically the only point on the North Sea with easy access to the rest of Europa. But nobody expected it to be able to defend that land. Yet it has defended that land, not once but twice, against the wrath of the Imperials. Not even a civil war has stopped this proud, small nation from fighting for its freedom, and against all odds it has actually pushed outward. With assistance from the Federation, of course. Which it is not officially part of, no sir.

The ancient rival of Edinburgh, and for almost its entire existence one of the great powers of Europa and the World, Lutetia's history is arguably the history of continental Europa west of the Krohne that divides it on paper from the southern lands of the Mascevans. It grew from a large collection of petty noble lands to a regional power after a century-long war with Edinburgh in the late Middle Ages, and soon commenced to follow Emden across the Atlantic and form colonies there. The Renaissance spread Lutetian culture and ideas as far and wide as it did those of Zwolle, and even the great religious wars of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries between Yggdists and Christians (and Protestants and Catholics) would not slow its growth down. By the end of the seventeenth century, Lutetia was the dominant power in continental Europa, and therein was birthed the ideas of the Enlightenment that would fan the flames of the ancient concept of democracy on the other side of the Atlantic. Lutetia's king supported this endeavor at the cost of his treasury, and ultimately his kingdom - the Lutetian Revolution, the first of two changes from royalty to republic, was a bloody affair and was swiftly followed by Europa's last madman, Ramolion, led the Lutetians on a rampage as far as within miles of Schwarzgrad before being turned back. One more bloody war followed a few decades later which would cement Lutetia's status as a republic of freedom and equality, a standard it quickly ignored as it competed with Edinburgh to conquer as much of Africa and Southeast Asia as possible, nearly managing to end the line of the kings of Mande in the process. Today, it is the founding and lead member of the Atlantic Federation, and for this reason it has borne the brunt by square mileage of the Imperial assault - nearly one fourth of Lutetia is now under Imperial control.

The great empire of the rowing-men, and alongside its old rival Svea the last kingdom of the old Vikings. A mighty autocratic (and mightily autocratic) empire stretching from the Krohne in the west to the Pacific coast of Scythia in the east, Masceva is the largest contiguous national entity in existence, and one of the largest in history. Continuous contact with the Orthodox Christians of Byzantium resulted in a great blending of orthodox Byzantine with the already present, largely Yggdist, Slavic culture in the medieval state of 'Rus. This state ultimately disintegrated due to the Golden Horde's invasions in the 13th Century, but its successor state would grow to be a major medieval power in its own right, surviving as a regional power right up to the end of the Renaissance, when its war with Svea transformed it to a superpower. The Enlightenment was a golden age of sorts, with a blossoming of literature, music, philosophy, and art equal to that of any other great Europan power. As time passed, it grew more authoritarian, more centralized, and more martial - and less tolerating of dissent, much of which was found within the Darcsen population. By halfway through the nineteenth century it was recognized as a Great Power, and set its sights westward. Decades of buildup and the alliances that would become the EEIA (and later the IA) led to the First Europan War, instigated by the assassination of a Mascevan prince. It was a stalemate, but Mascevan ambition was far from over. It reinvented its military and began some two decades later again an attempt to take over Europa. Time will tell if this is the time it succeeds.

Yet another fragment of the Hattusan's dreams of Europan conquest turned to a nightmare in the wake of revolutions throughout Hattusan Europe following the Lutetian Revolution and Ramolion Wars, Meppel is easily the most prosperous fragment - and the most authoritarian. The Prime Minister is allegedly a Mascevan puppet, but this does not concern King Paul I much, as he sees membership in the Imperial Alliance as a means to an end - domination over southeastern Europa could be his, all he'd really have to do is convince the Tsar that those nations just aren't trying hard enough in the war effort. And from there, Hattusa would be ripe for conquest, ally of the Tsar or no. And as for anyone either legitimately in his way (such as political opponents) or theoretically (such as minorities)? Well, they can work for the glory of Meppel until they drop. It's already started, after all - they've already torn out a chunk of northern Cartega.

Nordland's fate of waging war and being conquered by the Imperials was almost as certain as Gallia's - Nordland has the second-largest amount of ragnite in Europa (only Gallia has more), and the most oil out of any country on the continent, both of which proved too attractive for Svea and its former components to resist helping Masceva chase Olaf X out of Loaros. An ancient kingdom of vikings, unlike Svea it never was beaten up by foreign powers before - but then again, it was only recently that anyone had any reason to, as Nordland's "colonies" have mostly consisted of otherwise-irrelevant iceboxes. That is, until massive amounts of ragnite and oil were discovered in the Longyearbyen Archipelago and out to sea in Northic waters. Then there was a very good reason. While the major population centers besides Tromso are under Imperial rule, the entire country is putting up stiff resistance in the form of guerilla warfare, led primarily by the Order of the Blue Rose.

After long centuries of rule by Zwollen nobility, Roselare was very nearly conquered again after it was sold by the King of Genua to the King of Lutetia to repay a gargantuan debt owed to him. The Roselarians took offense to that idea and quickly rebelled. Not wanting a war so close to important ports (or an enemy so close if he chose to fight), the Lutetian king relented, and Roselare was granted its independence. Since then it has repaid its debts by unleashing Ramolion upon the world and carving out a handful of small colonies for itself. It has also, though this was when it was still property of the Genuan kingdom, produced the current royal family of Zwolle - which is in exile in Roselare, as said nation has been taken over by IA-backed fascists.

Founded: 1901

Inhabited by its people for centuries, the land of Sapmi has long been a chessboard with Masceva and Svea as the players, and only very recently has it had a national identity of its own. Cultural, certainly, though Masceva tried its hardest to stamp out any trace of a unique Sapmi culture. It was the combination of Svea's attempt to fortify the region against attack in the eighteenth century (which failed), and the publishing of its national epic, the Kalevala, in the nineteenth that led to the creation of a nationalist movement within the nation. As soon as the First Europan War broke out, Sapmi declared its independence, and swiftly managed to dislodge an entire army and a small fleet from its shore on the Crystal Sea before winter set in. Having more important fronts to deal with, the Mascevan Empire recognized its independence in 1904. Officially part of the Imperial Alliance, the government has made it very clear that it has no interest in fighting Masceva's war, and the only reason for its membership is to avoid being attacked. In secret, it is collaborating with the Atlantic Federation and merely biding its time - the plan is to first liberate Nordland, knock out the Svean states, then use all four nation's militaries to swing south. Toppest of secrets, of course.

Once one of the most powerful nations in northern Europa and a contender with Masceva for control over the Crystal Sea, Svea is... still one of the most powerful nations in northern Europa with large deposits of high-quality iron, copper, ragnite, and diamonds (in that order) and a sizable military. In the 1640s the king of Svea tried to expand eastward in a war with Masceva and nearly got to the Iron City of Schwartzgrad itself, but was beaten brutally back by a winter too harsh even for them, and broken into three parts as punishment. Ironically, Svea is a staunch ally of Masceva now, though there are many in the government (the king included, allegedly) who would very much like to change that, and possibly get their lands to the south back in the process should anything happen to the ardently pro-Imperial prime minister. Among other things, it is the seat of the Asatru faith, though it has a far higher number of Yggdists, comparable to Gallia in terms of percentage, with a respectable number of Christians.

Destination of the river Von and one of the oldest nations in Europa, Wesel has a long history of being dominated by nearly everyone surrounding them for the vast mineral wealth. Well, 'dominated' is a strong term - almost all of Wesel is mountainous, and it has never once been fully conquered, only put in the sphere of influence of outside forces. For the past two hundred years, that outside force has mostly been Gallia, as a means to fuel its own economy and fend off once-rival naval power Edinburgh. After the First Europan War however, it joined the Atlantic Federation in full and has been a devoted member since, even sending 'advisors' during the Gallian Civil War - to both sides. Boats along the Von have shipped out loads of high-quality wool, mutton, cheese, coal, gold, silver, tin, copper, and iron for centuries, and in more recent years bauxite and ragnite from near the Gallian border have provided a boost to the economy.

The lands contained within Zwolle proper once housed the forge of Western civilization, the heart of the Reman Empire. But such days are past now, and for most of its post-Reman existence, the Zwolle Peninsula has been a network of duchies and city-states squabbling over land and sea routes. The Renaissance started here, resulting in an explosion of art and learning, and the formulation of some of the finest universities in the world. Christianity's spread was cemented here, and it has the highest number of Christians in all of Europa. A united Zwolle is a recent phenomenon, more out of fear of Mascevan influence. Ironically, it has fallen under Mascevan influence through its dictator, Dino Lanzarin - an ardent fascist, even if he doesn't agree with the rest of the IA's policy on Darcsens, nor does his military. It is the fourth and weakest of the four Great Powers within Europa, though it has carved out a few choice colonies for itself in Cartega - most notably Zwollen Lybia.

Initially one of the largest Emden colonies in the New World, Granada has shrunk substantially, in large part due to a civil war that took place simultaneously with the wars of independence throughout Emdenan colonies in the New World at the start of the 19th century. The eastern portion would become Maricha, the southern Iximche, and the western would go to Zapota. For a while it experimented with different governments - first a federation, then a federal republic, and even a monarchy for four years before finally settling on a true republic. Hosting the largest port on the southern Carib coast, Granada is arguably the major naval power of that sea - or it would be, if Vinland were not there and if Emden did not doggedly hold on to the island of Cobana, despite a Communist revolutionary war raging on that island.

One of the offshoots of the Viceroyalty of Granada that became a republic in the 1820s, Maricha's history was dominated by ages of strife for most of that century - civil wars and warlords running amok through its plains in the north and central, and the jungles and mountains in the south of the nation. A series of political strongmen and coups by businessmen and nobles set the stage for a socialist revolution, and the Fourth Marichan Civil War resulted in a red banner flying over Santiago de Leon bearing the hammer and sickle of the international communist party. Since then it has remained remarkably stable, and politically very active, supporting communist parties, movements, and revolutions the world over - most notably in Cobana, where it openly supports the revolutionary's efforts with deliveries of weapons, food, and medicine. In fact, the only reason it has stopped sending soldiers to Cobana at all is so it can instead support revolutionary movements in Masceva, and to send troops to help the Atlantic Federation. But not join, of course - Emden would never allow it, and Maricha is too staunchly Communist to get along with a non-socialist alliance for long.

Chronologically the youngest of the world's Great Powers (although it became one before the Shogunate), Vinland is the world's oldest republic in continuous existence since its founding. Birthed in the fires of the Enlightenment's first true revolution over lack of representation and a tax burden deemed excessive by the original Thirteen Colonies, the government that promised liberty and freedom to all inhabitants soon turned its attention westward, while putting off the question of slavery as long as it could manage. It expanded across the lonely plains of central North Columbia and the mountains and deserts to the west through a series of purchases and wars - with Zapota, Edinburgh, and of course the native inhabitants therein, who simply had to get out of the way of Vinland's destiny made manifest. The question of slavery would wait no longer than the early second half of the nineteenth century, and Vinland was bathed in blood as brother slew brother over whether few men could own many as property. Freedom, and the colored man was freed and equaled - on paper. In practice, the races remain unequal in a number of ways. By centuries' end, Vinland was an industrial powerhouse, which it demonstrated by defeating Emden and taking its Pacific colonies for its own. Remaining neutral in the First Europan War, it nonetheless supplied Edinburgh and Lutetia with nearly a third of all their weapons by war's end, with its convoys heavily guarded. This demonstration of economic might firmly cemented Vinland as a Great Power, both economically and martially. Prior to now in the Second Europan War, it has provided support to the Atlantic Federation it was a founding member of in the form of weapons, technology, and training. Now it provides support in troops. At one point it was a Christian majority, now Christians are about even with Yggdists.

Home to the ruins of several of the most powerful nations in the New World prior to the arrival of Columbus, Zapota has not had very much luck when it comes to government. Most of the past century has been dominated by low-scale to high-scale civil wars, with the most recent growing intense enough to warrant the attention of the Vinland military, whose involvement helped put President Arambula in power. Some believe him to be a power-hungry wild man, and they may have a point, as he lives lavishly like a movie star while the condition of the Zapotan poor improves with a comparatively glacial pace. Ironically, from an economic standpoint it is doing just fine - the land is rich in resources and well-suited for agriculture, and the country itself is wealthy enough for a well-stocked military by Latin Columbian standards. It's not much compared to Veracruz to the south or Vinland to the north, but Zapota does its best in the war effort.

One of only two nations to throw off the yoke of the Edinburghish Empire by the sword, between the two Vinland has probably had the better luck, though not from lack of effort on Arachosia's part. It simply had the foul luck to exist in the same world as a world with ragnite when it had virtually no ragnite, yet literal mountains of coal and literal oceans of oil. Arachosia could arguably have the most in the world, and were it not for ragnite's existence, Edinburgh would have been on it like ugly on an ape and would have responded far more harshly to their Islamic revolution that freed the nation. As it is, Arachosia was left alone to slide downwards as hydrocarbons dropped precipitously in value. But it has other resources, Karchis is still one of the most important ports in south Scythia, and there is still a wealth of knowledge buried among the lonely rocks and sands of Arachosia to study. In recent years it has joined its old masters in the fight against the Oda Shogunate, partly because its current president sees the Shogunate's vicious suppression of non-Odan religions as a clear and present threat to Islam.

Consisting almost entirely of a massive plateau thousands of meters up, Bod is on average the highest nation in the world by altitude - the world's tallest mountain, Sagarmatha, is located near its southern coast along the Ganges Sea. Bod's claim to geopolitical Relevance and fame is twofold. Firstly, one of the more popular forms of Buddhism in the world originated here, and it remains the only true theocracy in the world. Secondly, Bod has the largest deposits of ragnite on Earth, totaling more than all of Europa combined. They are quite safe from invasion, as Bod is almost entirely surrounded by inhospitably tall mountains and equally inhospitable high mountains, and if that should prove insufficient, it has enough gold to afford one of the most well-trained militaries in the world, helped by its strict neutrality allowing it to purchase equipment and training from everyone, which it does with greed. Bod was the first nation to build a military airship, a military airplane, and a military cargo plane, all of which were done because the vast mountain ranges that cover it and the vast plains that separate major settlements have proven a hindrance even to itself, and sometimes even its electric trains are not sufficient. While it remains neutral, it has made many threats to end that situation, should Oda dare to attack it.

The lone and level sands and plains of east-central Asia are home to Urmuk, one of the major hubs of the ancient Silk Road, source of the bulk of the Khanate's old wealth as well as its diversity. These days, however, most of its wealth comes from ragnite and oil, and because it is the only easily accessed gateway from the west by land to the Great Tsung, something the government is well aware of, which is one of the few things they are aware of - Officially part of the Non-Aggression Pact like Bod, its troops have fought on both sides due to the sheer amount of power the clans have over where Dzungar soldiers go.

One of the most ancient civilizations in the world, the Eryan empire has seen the rise and fall of empires on nearly all of its sides, and has borne the brunt of several of them - the Remans and Caliphs to the west,the Great Tsung (and the Bod) from the east, the kings of the Raj to the southeast, and to the north, the mighty empire of the Xiongu. Not to say Eryan hasn't been a great power in its own right, at times its reach stretched from the Indus to the Mediterranean, or merely to one or the other from around its current borders. However it has seen better days - Masceva has stolen and lost formerly Eryan territories in the Caucasus, as has Hattusa, and not even preventing both from taking more has prevented both nations eyeing Eryan's wealth of resources and history with a greedy eye. While it remains neutral, it is not a member of the NAP and there would be no additional consequences, should the Imperial Alliance decide to forcefully add the Kingdom of the Lions to their ranks.

Founded: 1230

Last of the caliphates, the Hatussan Empire formed in response to the Crusades against earlier Caliphates' attempts at conquering all of the Mediterranean before spreading outward, something both they and Hattusa nearly managed - twice. Controlling Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, and for a while Jerusalem before losing it and most of the Levant to Lutetia, Edinburgh, and Roselare in the First Europan War, along with a good few chunks along its northeastern frontiers to Eryan (which it has since reconquered and is in the process of fully annexing). It has other ills - its control over its Europan eyalets is fading fast even with Mascevan (and the rest of the IA's) support in stamping out thoughts of rebellion, and the bedouins of its desert quarters to the south grow more restless by the day, some openly attacking the many oil and ragnite facilities throughout the peninsula. Intrigue in the court does not help - rather like the Tsung, there are those who joke that assassination is the official sport of the nobility. And with the legendary Hashashin all but forced at gunpoint to serve as the Sultan's personal special forces, those assassinations can be quite clean indeed. Hattusa spreads in all directions, its forces controlling the Khanates to the east like puppets, but even the Sultan can see the writing on the wall - the Last Caliphate is raging against fate itself, and it's entirely possible the war will be its undoing.

Capital: Kyoto (5.3 m)
Major Cities:

Founded: 660 BC (Empire)

The youngest of the Great Powers in terms of how long it has been one, in terms of how long it's been around, the Shogunate is truly ancient. With only one Imperial Family with a lineage dating back millennia (much of which can be confirmed), Yamato-Teikoku, as it officially calls itself, can certainly claim to having a lengthy history. However, most of that has been isolationist - for centuries Yamato was little more than a collection of fiefdoms before being united some time in the eighth century. The Emperor waxed and waned in power, with the historical peak being around the time that Yamato fended off the Golden Horde twice in the same decade, both with the help of storms, but fell into a sharp decline thereafter. About two centuries later, the knight and lord controlled fiefdoms became so powerful that they quite literally tore the country back into fiefdoms for a full century before one of them, the Oda clan, managed to unify the nation by pretty much killing everyone in their way. After two centuries of further isolationism, they took it upon themselves to bring as much of Scythia as possible under their heel, a move that inevitably brought them into conflict with the Federation, which secretly wanted to do the same, though not with nearly the brutality the Shogunate has shown.

Culturally Europan but geographically Scythian, Thule is a bit of an enigma. Isolationist for centuries, a feat it managed due to the brutal winters of the Arctic that surrounds (and occasionally covers) it, Thule avoided technological stagnation through a combination of spying and piracy - any ship that drew too close to its shores was forced ashore, anything of use seized, its occupants forced into servitude or citizenship depending on perceived usefulness, and the ship set adrift and ablaze. A close ally to Masceva since the seventeenth century, it is to the Imperial Alliance largely what Gallia now is to the Atlantic Federation - Thule supplies and designs the best weapons, the best Artifical Valkyria equipment, the best tanks, and the hardiest warships. Rumors abound that it is also the final destination of those the Alliance considers "undesirable" as well as how it is here where the alleged human experiments to create Valkyrur supersoldiers take place, though these are unconfirmed - and no spy airship has the range to reach Thule, nor the hardiness to survive the cold - or the ragnite-boosted anti-air guns that surround the island like a ring of fire.

Widely claiming itself to be the oldest civilization on Earth, the Middle Kingdom has fought wars longer than many nations have existed - though many such nations would not often call them "wars" per se. Experiencing both high points and low, the history of Zhonguo (as it is known outside of its own borders, at least in Edinburghish) is dominated by lengthy high periods of strong dynasties, followed by intrigue-induced decay, corruption, and peasant uprisings before a violent end and brief civil war before the Empire can right itself, though sometimes it takes a century or three to reunite. One of the largest centers of Scythian learning and culture alongside the Raj, much like the Shogunate it strictly limited trade and exposure to the West once the West started trying to trade in earnest and with frequency. Unlike the Shogunate, the Great Tsung largely ignored what knowledge the West tried to offer, thinking itself the peak of societal and technological evolution, whereas the Shogunate greedily absorbed every bit of information it could. The Great Tsung has paid dearly for this, with the Bod and Dzungarians calving off as wars both minor and major with the Western powers eroded its control over territory. After the First Europan War and the coronation of the current Emperor however, things seemed to turn around - Zhonguo formed alliances with Vinland, Edinburgh, Lutetia and Gallia in an attempt to finally start engaging in proper bilateral trade. It worked for a while, but it was too late - the worldwide depression didn't hit Zhonguo hard but it dd hit the Shogunate, and the riches of the Center of the Universe made it a prime target for the Shogunate's armies. Brutally beaten due in large part to technological inferiority, the government of the Tsung has retreated to Xianfu in an attempt to maintain control of the inland provinces.

The lands of Hiva and Nazca are home to perhaps the most ancient empires in the New World, alongside the desert kingdoms of Vinland and the Aztecs and Mayans of Zapota - though Hiva would very much like to point out that its ruins are both older and more recent, and the Hivans were far more powerful than any other native nation at the time of their conquest. It was here that the Emden-Colombian Wars of Independence were effectively brought to their end - though Emden, perhaps out of spite did not recognize Hiva as a separate entity for over fifty years. For most of the 19th century, Hiva has been a stable nation, with large supplies of gold, copper, and ragnite - and plenty of high-quality alpaca wool, without parallel in the world. It was a site of research archaeological and astronomical, with its many ruins and the clear skies of the Andes. Its stability came to an end during the Salpeter war, when its alliance with Polivar fell apart and both nations lost the desired mining fields. Polivar lost its coastline, and Hiva gained a guerilla war with socialists and fascists alike in the eastern jungles, which roar dully on to this day.

Of all nations to have success in fate to come from South Columbia, perhaps none have had more pure nor as glorious as a successful existence as Mendoza. Blessed with fertile plains, wide grasslands, and the lion's share of the mighty Andes (and the many resources within), Mendoza would have been the most prosperous of Emden's colonies from the beginning were the bulk of its resources on the Atlantic side. But it was not until the Emden-Columbian Wars that it was able to truly take advantage of them. It soon added military might to its success - fearing potential repercussions (or invasion), the young Mendozan government had its army trained by the Mascevans and its navy trained by Edinburgh. The results are plain - Mendoza captured nearly all of Polivar's former coast in the Saltpeter war and tore a chunk out of Tehuel large enough to leave their southern neighbors with almost no coal reserves. In recent years, it has been one of the biggest contenders in South Columbia's naval arms race, along with Hiva, Tehuel, and Veracruz. All of South Columbia seems wary of invasion from the Shogunate, but with the second largest ragnite deposits on Earth, Mendoza has the most to lose.

Consisting of Andean mountain vistas that spread down into tropical highlands and then on to semi-arid brush, scrub, and mountains, the Kingdom of Parana could easily be mistaken for a largely agricultural society - and indeed, Paranan cattle are some of the finest in the world. However, Parana is located at the southern end of the Great Mendozan Ragnite Vein and gets quite a sum of money from that stretch of near-solid ragnite ore, putting it in at a respectable twelfth for the most ragnite deposits worldwide. It is unique among the South Colombian nations for its large Mascevan and Zwollen immigrant population; these arrived shortly before the turn of the century when slavery was banned and the coffee barons needed workers. Coffee is the second largest agricultural export, after all, and many Paranans would like to think the world economy would grind to a halt without their coffee to grease the gears.

A latecomer to the Emden-Colombian wars of independence, Polivia was named after the Marichan leader for most of those wars, Simon Polivar, when its regional leader turned down the offer of Hiva of becoming a unified nation. History would show that perhaps he should have taken up that offer, as the rest of Polivia's history has been dominated by territory losses, the most damning of which has been its entire coastline to Hiva and Mendoza, which has cost it virtually all of its saltpeter and ragnite supply. Polivar makes do however, and stays Relevant due to its rare woods and large supplies of other minerals in the high plateaus that dominate its western third - iron, bauxite, gold, and copper most notably, and in these dry highlands there are plenty of places to raise hardy cattle and hardier alpaca for meat, hide, cheese, and fur.

Soriano is arguably the only nation in all of South Columbia that doesn't have a scrap of mineral resources to call its own - the closest they have is sea asphalt, and that hardly counts as worthless. What they do have is miles upon countless miles of farmland, and if Paranas cattle isn't to your liking, perhaps Soriano cattle will do, they have plenty of it. Soriano is also heavily industrialized, as a large amount of resources from the interior get processed and manufactured in Soriano, since it's still cheaper in some areas than going over the Andes. While officially part of the Non-Aggression Pact, it sends troops to the Federation war effort at a disproportionate rate to its population; only Gallia sends more per capita.

Despite everything - an economy that swings like a pendulum, rampant organized crime in the south (especially in Piratiniga), and a cycle of attempted rebellions and uprisings, the simple fact remains that Veracruz is the undisputed economic and military power in South Columbia, in part due to its sheer size and wealth of resources - coal and ragnite especially in the southern highlands, and cotton, coffee, cattle and rubber along the coasts and in the mighty Amazon. An attempted coup in the 1870s after its monarch banned slavery, and three more in recent years - one sparked by the Federation and two by the Empire, have only solidified its position as the premiere power of the Non-Aggression Pact; at least now that Gallia has formally left the organization. It has the largest army and navy both in all of South Columbia, and has mostly used it to deter or fend off probing by the Empire - as well as to escort cargo ships bearing its lozenged banner across the Atlantic. Due simply to its size and might, it may not remain neutral for much longer - and if it does join the effort, the entire Non-Aggression Pact will follow.

Capital: Neuquén (172k)
Major Cities:
Bariloche (31k)
Currency:Tehuelian
Founded: 1808 (declared)
1828 (Recognized)

The southernmost nation of the New World, Tehuel controls access around Cape Magellan and through the Devil's Crown, a network of thousands of small, rocky islands that jut anywhere from inches to hundreds of feet up out of the ocean and provide as great a hazard today as they did to the first Europan explorers to these lands - but even these are safer than the violently stormy Sea of Hoces to the south. A land of pampas, desert, and trees to the south, Tehuel is home to more cattle than people and more sheep than cattle, and it competes with much of the rest of the southern half of the continent in claiming it has the best. For cattle that is debatable, for sheep that is far more likely. It also has a bustling mining industry and a stable whaling one, one of the few countries in the world to still engage in whaling. It is notable for having more battleships than any country on the continent besides Veracruz. The first nation to declare independence from Emden, it managed to escape from the war nearly unscathed, as the country was simply too flat and empty for Emden to effectively control, which inspired the other nations of the New World, and most importantly Simon Polivar.

I will try to put together an app here, but I'll have to read up a lot on the setting first. I assume that Captain Ryougi is the CO. I'll go ahead and reserve, for now, the XO position. In order to ensure as little WoF overlap as possible, I'm thinking of a brilliant but reserved and uncompromising young Darcsen officer: someone who intuitively grasps the tactical and strategic questions that Matthew Beecher works hard to master, but who lacks Matt's intuitive ability to lead and inspire.

To whit, a few questions: do Darcsens in Vinland have surnames, or is their lack of them a universal matter? For that matter, what kinds of names do Darcsens have? Is the parallel so close that I should be basing this on Yiddish, or not? What religion(s) do Darcsens follow: do they have their own, or do they adhere to the non-Yggdist traditions in their areas? I'll have more questions as I get to work, but there's a start.

EDIT: one more: would the Volunteers be the only part of the Vinland military where a Darcsen can serve/become an officer, or is the rest of the armed forces open to them as well?

For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Shame Foreigners can't be officers, but I guess my character can just end up as an NCO. A bit of a seasoned Mercenary, man without borders who ended up in the VFL one way or another. A bit of an old man, though he's not quite there in age, who looks at his comrades like sons and brothers and has been around the block more than a few times. Or maybe I'll find some way for him to be an officer...

But first, I should read up on the lore and setting a bit more

That's fine by me.

Reverend Norv wrote:To whit, a few questions: do Darcsens in Vinland have surnames, or is their lack of them a universal matter? For that matter, what kinds of names do Darcsens have? The first one is a good question. I'll be going off my guesses - part of the issue is that the original Japanese name of this series is, well, "Battlefield Valkyria - Gallian Chronicles", and it focuses largely on Gallian exploits in war (or in 4's case, the exploits of Gallian soldiers serving in Edinburgh's army), so there isn't much information about the outside world. For the most part, I would assume yes, Darcsens do not have surnames unless they are adopted by non-Darcsens, as in the case of Isara Gunther.

As for the second, I'd go with tweaked Yiddish names, since the names for canon Darcsens tends to be a bit... eclectic. Examples in the spoiler below, for all the help it'll provide.
Isara (female name)
Zaka
Wavy
Nadine (Female name)
Zeri
Jugin
Magari (Female name)
Mischlitt (Female name)
Ramal
Imca (Female name)
Gusurg
Dahau
Raz
Zaiga
Louffe/Ruch (Japanese is Ruch, possibly a corruption of Ruth, English TL uses Louffe because God forbid the Japanese mean an R when they use an R, oh and female name)

For religion that's another good question, Valkyria Chronicles suffers from the typical Japanese game worldbuilding strategy of only telling you what you need to know, and religion only really comes up as important in the second game, which covers the Gallian Civil War. And even that only serves to introduce Yggdism - which I'm portraying here as Catholicism but with valkyrur-patrons being worshipped instead of any particular gods; Christianity's presence is merely implied due to some dialogue in the fourth game. I would say the religion is probably either something along the lines of Ancient Mesopotamian (as chronologically the arrival of the Valkyrur aligns roughly with the arrival of the Proto Indo-Europeans in our timeline), or possibly the Jewish equivalent of what you did with Christianity in On This Island (since the Darcsens are a blatant allegory for the Jews; ironically the devs had to make blatant Japanese characters in 3 and 4 because Japanese fans thought they were supposed to be Asians). There would probably also be those who adhere to local non-Yggdist beliefs as well.

Reverend Norv wrote:EDIT: one more: would the Volunteers be the only part of the Vinland military where a Darcsen can serve/become an officer, or is the rest of the armed forces open to them as well?

Yes. More may form later as the war hammers away at bigotry in the army, but for now the Volunteers are the only one.

An interesting idea, i've never seen a Valkyria Chronicles RP actually, which is surprising

Though the lack of effective combat aircraft always put me off a bit, it does allow for some stupidly amazing mega weapons, doesn't it?

So do locations and stuff have to be within the lore of Valkyria Chronicles?

Literally everything outside of a few nations in Europa (And even then mostly just Gallia and to a lesser extent Edinburgh and Nordland) plus Vinland I made up myself, go nuts.

She soon made a name for herself as "Cunning Connie" when she would swindle other kids out of their allowances with betting games. A lot of kids stopped hanging out with her after a while and she felt very alone. It wasn't until her late teens that she met a man and fell into a relationship. By this time she had developed a bit of a skill of cheating. The thing about it was her boyfriend was a made member of the local mafia, and was always out looking for trouble. When trouble found him, she found herself caught up in everything, and she couldn't have been happier. The rush and excitement of her newfound life spurred her to become a mobster, much to the chagrin of her significant other. Even when he was iced by a rival family, Connie never seemed to entirely fall out of the life. She learned how to use and hone her talents to target other rival mobs, even using her feminine wiles if it meant getting what she wanted out of them.

But Constance was not one to just play nice, and her spree of crimes gave her the nickname "Carbine Connie" instead. But soon enough, the whole ordeal of it all began to grow stale. There wasn't much progress being made on either side and it seemed less and less exciting as the years went on. Connie's newfound adventure came when she heard of the war on the Europan continent. Well, she couldn't let them have all the fun without her, especially after she missed the first one. In a bold and somewhat confusing move, she made an enlistment at a continental Vinland state recruiter station. She got halfway through training before the MPs came for her, but she expected this in every sense. With the knowledge she had gained, she knew just who's ass to kiss and who's palm to grease. Not to mention, she made a great case for herself. If she was able to get through training, why shouldn't she be let in? Afterall, it wasn't like she was here to commit grand larceny (even though the idea was not off the table). A long discussion with higher-ups and such and it was agreed that the service would help eliminate her criminal record if she "volunteered" for a frontline unit. Of course, she loved the looks on her faces when she so enthusiastically agreed. But even though she was a felon and a mobster, she never told anyone else she was teamed with. What they didn't know wouldn't hurt them.

Tagging for curiosity. A hell of a lot of work went into this, and I do like the franchise, but I'll probably just read through this since I don't really have the time to participate in it.

In a strange world not so different from ours, a young empire stands in the heart of Europa. Born and forged in the fires of war, it is headed by an embittered Kaiserin and a camarilla of aging, scheming generals. Stretched to a breaking point and groaning under the stress and hubris of its past victories, the Fatherland stands on guard. But on the forefront of a new world, fighting a new war from without and within, will it survive?

Gallia only has child soldiers because it's small and desperate. Vinland has dozens of times the population, hundreds of times the area, and three massive oceans between the continental USV and any enemies. Youngest you'll get is 16 year olds.

Thinking of working on an app. Heavily conflicted between an officer and a squad leader and dealing with a bit of writer's block. I had this officer type character I really liked, but I don't think his personality and background really fits in with this setting and time period. So I think I'll probably end up with a Squad Leader. Bit of a Soldier of Fortune, but is in it less for the money than the adventure and camaraderie that comes from it.

So a reservation of a Squad Leader would be nice

AVIDAN

Image
+++Name: Avidan. Like all Darcsens, he has no surname.
+++Age: 23
+++Sex/Gender: Male
+++Sexual Orientation: Bisexual

+++Physical appearance: A fairly small young man of middling-average height, more wiry than muscular, but with calloused hands and corded forearms that suggest he is no stranger to hard work. He has the very dark hair and eyes of his people, and is usually recognizable as a Darcsen. Unlike most Volunteers, he is scrupulous about the standard of his uniform: his trousers are always properly bloused, his officer's Sam Browne buffed, and he wears his necktie for everything except the filthiest of fatigue duties. Avidan's vision is good enough to qualify for combat service, but far from perfect, and so he prefers to wear sturdy steel-rimmed glasses at almost all times. He has an odd bearing, stiff and performative and aggressive, like an actor forced to play a role that he finds unnatural.

+++Identifying Marks: Very old scarring on his back and the backs of his thighs, a dozen or so faded lateral lines. A more recent small, circular burn scar on the left side of his neck.

+++Rank: First Lieutenant

+++Nationality: Naturalized Vinland citizen

+++Ethnicity: Darcsen

+++Religion: Enlism, the traditional faith of the Darcsen people, which is based on the worship of a single God, Enli, the Great Orderer of all things, who separates day from night, sea from land, sin from virtue, and death from life. Enlism's cosmology is highly dualistic, but not at all Manichaean; it values distinction, but usually sees value in both sides of a dichotomy, for Enli is more architect than judge. And so the job of His faithful is to grasp the essential underlying order of creation, to increase their understanding of creation's structure and their role within it, and to live harmoniously within that divine system. This has led Enlists to place a key value on literacy, inquiry, and debate, because these are the ways for Enli's faithful to discern the grand structure at work in His creation. It has also led to a complex set of religious rules and behavioral precepts intended to ensure that Darcsens fulfill their specific role within that grand system, as understood by the great Enlist scholars. These precepts are followed only erratically by most Darcsens, and very sparingly by Lt. Avidan.

+++Birthplace: Wildhusen, Empire of Masceva

+++Permanent Residence: Apt. 715, 5867 N. Halsted St, Shikawa, United States of Vinland.

+++Criminal History: Arrested and charged with a breach of the peace at age 16. Initially pleaded innocent on grounds of self-defense. Case was eventually settled by plea bargain: 40 hours community service in exchange for expungment of criminal record.

+++Skills: An exceptionally intelligent man - three different professors submitted letters of recommendation describing him as a genius - Lt. Avidan's foremost skill is his capacity to rapidly absorb, synthesize, and creatively apply new information. In layman's terms, he is extremely good at learning how to do things. He speaks native Mascevan, unaccented Anglish, fluent Lutetian and Ellonian, and the Zwollen of the Shikawa streets. During his military training, Lt. Avidan excelled at tactics: meticulous and rational, neither reckless with his men's lives nor so attached to them as to lose sight of the larger picture, with a decent eye for terrain and a geometrically perfect understanding of fields of fire, he proved himself - at least in theory - a model battlefield commander. He is highly educated, trained in engineering and mathematics and psychology, and is well-equipped for tasks ranging from logistical accounting to advanced field repairs to impromptu psychoanalysis of his comrades' strengths and weaknesses. He has, for the same reason, a fairly clear awareness of his own faults; and while he cannot truly escape them, he is at least capable of factoring them into his decision-making. While neither particularly strong nor particularly tough, Lt. Avidan never failed a single PT exercise or exposed a glimmer of fear in training, a fact that his instructors attributed either to raw courage or to iron self-control or both. An unexceptional marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, Lt. Avidan compensates in combat with self-discipline, decisiveness, and ingenuity; a leader with little warmth or obvious charisma, he makes up for it with psychological acuity, force of personality, and an occasional willingness to listen.

+++Psychological analysis: Lt. Avidan carries profound psychic scars. He is a survivor of a pogrom that killed his mother when he was six, an immigrant who struggled to find a place in a nation that often held him in contempt, and a reluctant patriot whose own army forced him to serve among foreigners. Accordingly, Avidan is driven by the paradox of trauma. He desperately wants to feel safe, yet sees every chance at safety as a potential trap; he desperately wants to be accepted and loved, but assumes every community to be hostile and closed to him; he desperately wants to believe in ideals and leaders, but has learned firsthand the injustice and brutality of institutionalized power. He fears the very things that he most craves. This double consciousness pervades Avidan's psyche. It shapes his view of himself: he knows that he is a brilliant mind, knows that he is capable of great things, and yet his every achievement becomes a source of terrible anxiety to him, because he senses that the world will punish him for shining brighter than a Darcsen ought. The same double consciousness shapes his view of his community: he loves his family and draws strength from the ancient culture and traditions of the Darcsen people, and yet he feels with every heartbeat the humiliation that his membership in this people imposes - his lack even of a name. Avidan's struggle to live with these contradictions, with the impulse both to embrace life as a gift and to reject it as a threat, has left its mark. It has made him reserved and intense, suspicious of authority and reluctant to confide in others, inclined to excuse his cynicism as realism and his cutting, sardonic humor as arch irony. He works twice as hard as his peers in an attempt to prove himself, and yet instinctively dismisses any recognition as a condescending sham. And yet, beneath that protective self-control, Avidan yearns to touch and to be touched, to believe and to be believed in, to follow and to lead. It is that depth of feeling, sublimated and redirected, that produces his phenomenal work ethic and that yields the intensity of character that fascinates his few friends. And at the deepest level of all, Avidan is defined by decency. He has seen a great deal of cruelty, both terrible and casual, and yet has refused to become cruel. That single, secret achievement, however deeply buried beneath layers of emotional reserve and suspicion and sardonic wit, is the source of Avidan's self-worth and the taproot of his identity.

+++Weaknesses: While Avidan has no difficulty assessing his comrades' strengths and weaknesses, he is cold and reserved enough that it is rare for him to form close attachments or to inspire much loyalty, especially in a short timeframe. His ruthless clarity of vision and limited reserves of patience and sympathy combine to produce a cutting sense of humor and an abrasive assertiveness that tend to grate on his superiors and subordinates alike. He tends to assume the worst of others and to fear the worst of situations, traits that occasionally distort his judgment to make him risk-averse. Conversely, Avidan's impulse to prove himself can sometimes make him rash and overly aggressive - despite the fact that he himself recognizes this impulse as quixotic and humiliating. As an individual combatant, he is an unexceptional soldier, neither notably strong nor very fast nor a particularly good shot nor gifted at stealth; his brain is by far his most effective weapon. He is an atrocious cook, a tuneless singer, and unable to sketch anything more complex than a field map. He writes, however, with remarkable clarity and poetic force.

+++Likes/dislikes: He likes alcohol; Avidan's dependence on alcohol is more psychological than physical, and he can go without it if the need arises, but when he gets the opportunity he is a heavy and habitual drinker. Similarly, he drinks a great deal of coffee when it is available, and he doesn't care much about its quality. He has a nostalgic appreciation for Mascevan food, especially smoked fish, though he keeps this a personal secret. Similarly, he loves good books, including novels, though he refuses to admit to most people that he appreciates fiction. Avidan enjoys games: chess, checkers, even card games. He particularly likes winning, and he is skilled enough at most games that this rarely poses a problem for him. Banter and dry humor come easily to him, and though he is thick-skinned enough to take a well-intentioned ribbing, he has a clear-eyed recognition of mean-spirited or hateful jokes. To say that Avidan dislikes bigotry both understates and overstates the situation: though he is resigned to prejudice as an inevitable part of life that must be accepted and endured, he also feels each new act of hatred as a fresh blow upon a bruise raw from a lifetime's humiliation. Hypercompetent, he admires intellect and despises incompetence; utterly diligent, he holds laziness in contempt but respects hard work; endowed with iron self-control, he is perturbed by extravagant displays of emotion. Avidan quietly craves intimacy, yet has a strong sense of personal and professional boundaries, and he responds acidly to overfamiliar behavior. He is allergic to any hint of manipulation, and so regards with detached suspicion all posturing at inspirational "leadership." His moral radar regarding sadism is infallible: he can sense its presence regardless of dissimulation and denial, and true cruelty provokes an unflinching righteous anger that is otherwise mostly absent from his character.

+++Interests: Avidan is a well-educated man of catholic tastes: he keeps abreast of scholarship in psychology, mathematics, physics, and engineering, and possesses clearly formed views on literature, religion, history, and politics. Mostly, he is consumingly interested in learning; on the rare occasions when he encounters a truly new idea or field, he regards it both as a delight and as a challenge. The one topic in which he is fairly uninterested is the arts: unlike literature, music and painting engage his emotions but not his intellect, and he lacks any critical instinct with regard to them. He also has an intense, if somewhat bitter, appreciation for the game of baseball.

+++Fears: Certain of Avidan's fears are deeply rooted in childhood trauma. Proximity to large fires causes him anxiety; the experience of being pinned down or restrained tends to produce full-on panic. He has a similarly intense, irrational fear of the criminal justice system: arrest, internment, and deportation haunt his nightmares. Fundamentally, most of Avidan's fears stem from an underlying dread of helplessness, a dread rooted in a painful awareness of his own vulnerability to brutalization by powerful institutions and people. To fend off fear, he clings to any scrap of agency, however partial or illusory. When that last resort is lost, and he finds himself entirely unable to affect his own fate in any way, a deep and gnawing terror sets in.

+++Equipment: Officer's field uniform, including necktie and Sam Browne; M1C Patterson rifle with bayonet and 8 stripper clips; Brown Hi-Power with 4 magazines; ragnaid canister; 2 fragmentation grenades; 1 smoke grenade; entrenching tool; binoculars; map; canteen; protractor, notebook, journal, and pens.

+++Biography:
  • Born 2/25/1916, Wildhusen, Empire of Masceva. Family were members of the shrinking Darcsen middle class; father was a brilliant engineer who worked as chief of development at a local factory and held an associate professorship in the Wildhusen University School of Engineering. He lost both jobs under Darcsen exclusion laws in 1921.
  • 4/12/1922, a pogrom incited by Imperial propaganda swept through Wildhusen. The family's home was set ablaze with them still inside. Lt. Avidan's mother died of smoke inhalation. He and his father escaped the fire and were badly beaten with a bullwhip, the cause of the old scars on Avidan's back and legs. They survived and emigrated to the United States of Vinland, where they claimed refugee status, 10/5/1922.
  • Settled in a working-class immigrant neighborhood of Shikawa, where his father worked on the line in a ragnite engine factory: a humiliating fall from his position in Masceva. Limited Anglish skills and anti-Darcsen prejudice effectively prevented promotion and kept the family on the bare edge of financial security. Father eventually remarried a second-generation Darcsen immigrant woman.
  • Learned English extremely rapidly and excelled in school. Repeatedly applied for school and neighborhood baseball teams, only to be rejected every time, his first encounter with anti-Darcsen sentiment in Vinland. Benefited from the mentoring of several broad-minded teachers who grasped his enormous potential. Strongly supported by the local Enlist temple, with which he always maintained a somewhat ambivalent relationship. A quiet, intense boy, he had few friends; of the two that he did have, one was non-Darcsen, and both were intensely loyal to him.
  • As an adolescent, increasingly relied on sharp wit as a defense mechanism against bullying. After humiliating a bigoted classmate at a disciplinary hearing, he was attacked on his way home from school, pinioned by several young men, and tortured with a lit cigarette, 10/20/1931: the cause of the scar upon his neck. Upon escaping and injuring one assailant, he was arrested and charged with a breach of the peace. Initially pleaded innocent on grounds of self-defense; when it became clear that he could not afford the court costs of letting the case go to trial, instead accepted a plea bargain that traded 40 hours of community service for expungment of his criminal record.
  • With the help of supportive teachers and the local Enlist temple, applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was accepted. Once again, excelled academically and found a community in the small group of Darcsen students. Experienced a brief but significant mental breakdown, 4/12/1936, provoked by a sense of despair that, no matter how hard he worked, he would ever be allowed to contribute meaningfully to the future of his country. Completed a dual major in physics and psychology, with a minor in engineering; won two academic prizes for original research and graduated magna cum laude, 5/9/1938.
  • Upon graduation, attempted to enlist in Vinland Army but was rejected due to being a Darcsen, 5/20/1938. Decision to pursue military service appears to have been motivated by a conviction that war with the Imperial Alliance was inevitable, a desire for vengeance, and a desire to prove his patriotism, though interviews suggest that Avidan regarded his own motivations as essentially quixotic even at the time.
  • Reapplied to Vinland Volunteer Army Officer Candidate School, 6/2/1938, and was accepted. Underwent training at Fort Lockridge, where his difficulty in connecting to comrades was noted, but his classroom performance was flawless and he was cited as the most gifted tactician in his class of more than 400 officer candidates. Commissioned 11/10/1938, and assigned to headquarters, 5th Regiment, 1st Volunteer Cavalry Division.
  • Served in logistical and operations-planning roles at regimental headquarters before and during the 1st Volunteer Cavalry's deployment to Khumat. Regarded as an exceptionally efficient and hardworking junior officer. Although rear-deployed, experienced repeated shelling by enemy artillery and one bombing run by enemy airships. Promoted to 1st lieutenant, 6/18/1939, and reassigned as executive officer, L Company, 5th Regiment, 1st Volunteer Cavalry Div., due to a desperate need for frontline officers after heavy Federation losses near Jedsut. Now preparing to lead troops in active combat for the first time.

+++Why You Fight: "Because I know what will happen if they win. To me, my family, my people, my country. I've seen it before, up close. So I fight. There's nothing else to do."

+++Theme Song: "Call it aspirational. How I'd like to feel more than how I do, most days. But it's something to hold on to, at least."
