NS Sumo Contest I Signups

Postby Dempsia » Wed Oct 17, 2018 8:45 pm

I am hosting a sumo tournament to crown the best in the world at pushing other pushers out of charcoal-embroidered rings. Anyone that would like to join may apply in this thread.

--RULES--
The winner of a sumo bout is generally either:

The first wrestler to force his opponent to step out of the ring
The first wrestler to force his opponent to touch the ground with any part of his body other than the bottom of his feet
Also, a number of other less common rules can be used to determine the winner. For example, a wrestler using an illegal technique (or kinjite) automatically loses, as does one whose mawashi (or belt) comes completely undone. A wrestler failing to show up for his bout (including through a prior injury) also automatically loses (fusenpai).
1 : Bending back fingers, +1 RivP (RivalryPoint)
2 : Kicking at the opponent’s chest or waist, +2 RivP
3 : Grabbing the opponent’s throat, +3 RivP
4 : Jabbing at the opponent’s eyes or solar plexus, +4 RivP
5 : Pulling of the hair, +5 RivP
6 : Pulling or grabbing opponents groin, +6 RivP, Instant Disqualification (1/3 Rounds)

In some situations, review of the gyōji's decision may be needed. The judges outside the ring, who sit at eye level (the "shimpan") may convene a conference in the middle of the ring, called a "mono-ii". This is done if the judges decide that the decision over who won the bout needs to be reviewed; for example, if both sumotori appear to touch the ground or step out of the ring at the same time. In these cases, sometimes video is reviewed to see what happened. Once a decision is made, the chief judge will announce the decision to the spectators and the wrestlers alike. They may order a bout to be restarted, or leave the decision as given by the gyōji. Occasionally, the shimpan will overrule the gyōji and give the bout to the other wrestler.

After the winner is declared, an off-stage gyōji (or referee) determines the kimarite (or winning technique) used in the bout, which is then announced to the audience.

On rare occasions, the referee or judges may award the win to the wrestler who touched the ground first. This happens if both wrestlers touch the ground at nearly the same time and it is decided that the wrestler who touched the ground second had no chance of winning, his opponent's superior sumo having put him in an irrecoverable position. The losing wrestler is referred to as being shini-tai ("dead body") in this case.

You have to present your nation's leading sumo, their rank, and a description of their capabilities and physique.

The maximum number of participating nations are 24
Arai Narikazu representing Yokotari

Good luck, and sumo on! :)

Whoever gets another sumo wrestler out of the ring for an estimated five minutes will win the bout.
You can have multiple rounds or a draw followed by a BYE for the contestant below you.

Well, at least that's how I scorinate it

If you really want to know, the sumo that is the last one in the ring wins the bout as I'm told

I think maybe something got lost in translation a bit. To 'scorinate' is to generate results for your tournament. Challonge.com merely provides a bracket for your tournament, but doesn't produce the results. Do you have a system of determining who wins each bout? Dice? random.org? A 'scorinator' (which is NS Sport speak for software that generates sports scores)?

Are there any non-downloadables?

The most you could do without a scorinator would be to use dice. Every fighter could use 3 turns and roll dice on a particular site. Problem is, it would be hard for us to roll ourselves without a central place of roll recordkeeping. Dice alone would also be fairly random for what NS Sports users are used to.

I also doubt there is really a sumo scorinator, though maybe you could adjust one from another sport. Those do need downloads though. So it looks like a download and some experience is needed.

I like the idea of a sumo tournament, but you need to have a system to decide the results so that people don't wind up arguing or godmodding. You can't trust people to just sort it out by RPing because you'll get matches where both players want to RP their guy winning. And it's not normal to have the host just pick winners on a whim.

Eureka! I've got it!

So, an average sumo ring is 4.5 meters right?
Translate that to inches and divided by 6, as in a six-sided die and you have your scorinator!
For the person rolling their sumo they push the opponent back by what they roll and for the opponent, they do the same thing but from the force of pushing another back, the opponent also go with the contestant 1 apart as the opponent is pushing from the front

SUMMARY: It's really hard to put into words

You could roll that behind the scenes as the host. The only thing is people often like a way for RP to add a slight bonus. Scorinators have that built in. I personally like the idea though.

Yeah, it's a very technical endeavor to cross for a scorinator. Maybe I'll roll their dice, tell them the score, and they'll rp what they make out of that. I don't have favoritism for anyone either so that seems like the choice to make. You never can trust what people say they roll compared to their actual roll.

I'm with Vangazi in wanting an RP bonus, but I do think you're headed in the right direction with that dice-roll idea. If you can develop your ideas a little further and figure out how to work in an RP bonus, then I might sign up for this.

The fact that you got what people were saying about the need for impartial scorination and responded to it is a positive sign.

Alright, this seems pretty unconventional for a roleplay bonus, but I'm adding in rivalries! Each time a nation's best clashes with each other twice it creates a rivalry!
Rivalries are a simple function, ranging from 2 (Mild) to 50 (Cataclysmic)!

I hope this will be implemented into future scorinators, and I'm doing the best I can to make this feature work!
Sumo on!

I have to say that, although I'm not sure it would fit in with Qusmo ICly, I am watching this thread, & I really like what I'm seeing. It's really nice to see someone be receptive to the advice they're given by the community, & I love the creativity you've shown, including with trying to include rivalries. I'm jumping into this thread to ask, though: I'm not entirely sure how rivalries would work in terms of having an effect on the scorination. I think there's a few ways you could go, whether it involves having an impact on who wins, or just what style they win with, or even just how quickly they win - but what are you thinking?

Cheers, & keep up the good work so far!

A new idea that stimulates dice and rivalries:

If you roll in the lower 3, you make a RESPECT MOVE. This knocks your rivalry meter down by 2- RIVALRY POINTS. And, if you have less than 2 at that time, you are knocked into the negatives in the DIGNITY POINT ZONE
If you roll in the upper 3, you make a DISRESPECT MOVE, which in turn gives you a RIVALRY POINT BONUS of +2
If you so happen to roll on a snake eyes, you embark on the ULTIMATE DISRESPECT POINT RANGE, which grants you +10 rivalry points by showing how easy you are going on your sumo opponent.
Double sixes are ILLEGAL TECHNIQUE, which gets your sumo disqualified for the first round of three, rivalry points are 20 in total.

You know, i see a lot of new OP's get frustrated when changes are suggested to them, but your rolling with it pretty well. I think Sumo is an interesting concept and i'd love to see this develop further. There are no Sumo-Wrestlers in The Frozen Forest, but i'll switch momentarily to my Asian nation, Yokotari.

Expect an app soon.

Name: Arai "Dancing Dragon" Narikazu
Image

Age: 37
Nationality: Yokotari
Rank: Ozeki
Capabilities: Arai is skilled in Uwate-Nage, Hiki-Taoshi, Soto-Gake, Suso-Harai, Harite and Okuri-Dashi. He tends to utilize speed and timing over superior weight and is notably "slippery" as he trains to avoid being gripped or held onto. He usually attempts to either joint-lock an opponents arms to throw them out, or use their own momentum and weight against them.
The Empire of Yokotari is a Alternate Nation of the person who rules over The Frozen Forest, it is purposely mean to not represent my personal views, and is meant to mimic a Japanese Empire-esque state. I have no intention of letting it fade away and i intend to develop it. If you want to interact with it shoot me a telegram either through this nation or The Frozen Forest.
