Fourth Annual AVBF Sevens Tournament (2018 Edition)

Welcome all to the fourth edition of the AVBF 7s Tournament in the beautiful Confederacy of Neu Engollon! Please, make yourselves at home and prepare for an exciting competition!

THE FESTIVAL

An annual tradition, the Alpen View Brew Festival is on its seventh edition. It is always held in Confederacy Park in Burgunden, in the canton of Zurich. Burgunden is the largest city by far in the Confederacy with a greater metro population of 14 million. The festival, while revolving around beer and other brewed and distilled beverages, also features a main stage of live music and dance music deejayed from a secondary stage modeled especially for DJs. Live music is provided by the likes of popular Neu Engollian bands such as the Podunkers, Groma, Frigid Mares, Servonaris and Alpen Volken Circle, as well as several international sensations like the Chrysalides, Royalists, Pinc Fionnghall, Timeline Tremors, Katarina Klamaja and Velociraptor Rex.
In addition, there are several booths of entertainment, as well as the auxiliary grounds next to the main park where the rugby pitches are located.

SCORINATION, RP & CUTOFFS

As described in the OOC thread, I will be using the rugby union sevens function of xkoranate 0.3.3. Ranks from the previous cycle starting with the URSA 2 7’s have been input: NSRB 7’s 2017-18 Ranking Chart.
This was re-organized using a standard of 3-2-1 points system across the board, regardless of host choice at time of tournament. Players did not earn points for matches played after one or more tournament participants were eliminated. (In two instances, the first match past group stage involved all tournament participants.)

Aside from previous earned rank, RP will be your other main form of gaining skill points for your team. Quality over quantity is preferred, as always, but brief, info lacking RPs will earn poor grades, as will RPs stuffed with a mass volume of meaningless filler. Posting a roster will be rewarded with points as well.
RP that covers possible events on the adjoining Festival grounds may earn additional RP bonus. Message me for clarification if needed.

Cutoffs will be at 21:00 EST (UTC-4), although I will alert you all via the OOC thread should there be a change. Reminder to please keep aware of the OOC schedule as there are some days I will skip scorination, and other days (weekends) I will score in a row.

The standard rugby sevens points system will be in effect for this tournament where: 3 points are awarded for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss.

Tiebreakers will be (in order): 1. Head-to-head result between the tied teams.
2. Difference in points scored and allowed during pool play.
3. Points scored during pool play.
4. Coin toss (higher RP points).

ICly, matches will be officiated using these sanctioned NSRB officials. The matches will be broadcast on the NETV network, as well as partnered international networks.

CONFEDERACY PARK, BURGUNDEN, ZU, NEU ENGOLLON

Confederacy Park
Minutes Before Opening Gates

He stood on the top floor of the Pavilion, in one of the boxes that was reserved for the highest Confederacy government officials. The view wasn't anything majestic or really breathtaking, but it was beautiful all the same. After seven years of festivals on these grounds, it was also extremely familiar.

Event staff and brew booth staff ran around trying to get the last touches complete before gate opening time at 10. Michel, the entertainment director just discernible near the main stage, seemed to be about to burst as he hustled the Podunkers, national punk rock legends, through their sound check, although David knew he had things very much under control. He always did.
Erica was handling other issues among the beverage competitors and in general, the issues that faced a festival that brought in tens of thousands of patrons in a day.

It was also bittersweet to be here after so many years of he and his sister Erica being next to his father, Jan, and their uncle Franz, to witness the opening ceremonies of the AVBF. Both older men had led Burgunden Breueries and Burgunden Diversified Industries into the new millennium. They had made the world sit up and take notice of little Neu Engollon. But their greatest accomplishment that they themselves as well as all of the Confederacy spoke about was not corporate prowess, but opening the cultural doors to the outside world with the brew festivals.

Now Jan was in the ground for well over a year and Franz was frail and failing fast, not able to attend board meetings most weeks and having his sons and partners rule in his stead. He had suffered what the doctors called 'several mini-cardiac episodes.' Whatever that meant. David was at the top of Terembev, the regional beverage conglomerate, but there was serious talk of him taking the helm of the Toft family and BDI, while Erica took over Terembev, consolidating it with her current duties at Burgunden Breueries. So much had changed in just a few short years, but the Toft family was ready to roll with it.

David glanced at his watch. He needed to meet with the Cultural Minister, Rosette Kozic, in just a few minutes to go over what they would say and how things might proceed over the next couple days. He might just get a chance to take in some of the rugby matches once all the opening ceremony duties were over with. Something to look forward to.

Rugby Sevens World Cup: The Quick Guide to Savojarna

Savojarna's rugby culture is relatively young, even though similar games have been played in the nation since the middle ages. Mediaeval football games were very popular in Savojarna and looked probably more like today's rugby, often ending in a vicious brawl. In fact, it was so bad that the authorities had executed a total of 9 men in 1241 for playing a football match carrying swords, which apparently did not remain unused. In later times, Savojar warriors enjoyed a game that is seen by Savojars as the direct predecessor to rugby, and was often also played with blunt weapons as it was seen as a preparation for battle. Many of the traditions from this game carried over to rugby.

Sevens and Union are the two most popular codes in Savojarna, with League almost unheard of. The Savojar league is conducted in Rugby Union, and it consists of 14 teams playing each other twice. Between the seasons, there is a prestigious series of Rugby Sevens tournaments, the so called Triple S (Savojar Sevens Series). The Triple S consists of the eight best teams of the Savojar Rugby Serien ranking, which is conducted over the last three years, referred to as the Triple S Class. They are automatically invited to all four Triple S tournaments, traditionally played in Storevik, Savojagrad, Virkaja and Thorsborg. Each tournament also invites four more teams (not necessarily the same four), and the tournaments are played in groups of 6 followed by a semifinal and a final. After the four tournaments, the six best teams are invited to Sjoedrhavn for the Triple S Final Tournament. There, they play a play-off for the title of Rugby Sevens Champion of Savojarna.

RP injuries to my players: Y (if it is serious, TG me and wait for approval)
Godmod injuries to my players: N

A note about godmodding: Everything that could happen under real world physics and rules, but is unlikely is fair game. So, if you want to RP someone kicked a ball across the whole pitch to score, do it, even if that is possibly a godmod (and probably not "possible" under RL physics and RL humans, but not completely unimaginable if you have exceptionally strong players I guess. If you do stuff that is impossible though - magic etc. - that is not okay.
Second note regarding violence: Feel free to stage a fight between Savojars and your people (be it fans or players) if you want. However, Savojarna has an incredibly strong warrior culture and always honoured fighters, so expect to get a bloody nose or two. Also, along with this culture comes a strong sense of honours and ethics in a fight. In Savojarna, it is regarded as extremely bad form and a strong sign of cowardness to hurt a person who is visibly beaten or does not want to fight. This means that you are free to brawl with Savojars, but please do not have any Savojars attacking innocents or engaging in group violence against people laying on the ground. We do not do that. Also, we don't hit people from behind if we are not in a fight already. Getting behind an opponent is a sign of bad skill on their part and a it's fair move to use in a fight. Getting behind an unsuspecting person and sucker punching them from behind is a move for cowards who don't dare to confront their opponent face to face.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!
I am a student of (European) politics, ice hockey fan, left-wing communist bordering on anarchy, and European federalist. Enjoy!

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
National rugby sevens team

This will be the fourth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in AVBF Rugby Sevens, which also happens to be in its fourth edition right now. Rugby sevens is, quite frankly, a fringe sport in the Democratic Republic, with most of its players being either rugby union or rugby league players in their professional careers. However, the country simply couldn't resist the temptation to go for some sporting silverware, and therefore the rugby sevens national team has been assembled and sent to Burgunden in Neu Engollon yet again for yet another shot at glory.

Demonym: Fleftic
Official history: This will be the fourth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in the AVBF Rugby Sevens.

THE CHIEFDOM OF COPPER CUPRUM
NATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TEAM

This is the second time that Copper Cuprum will be participating in the AVBF Sevens. Rugby is the most popular sport in Copper Cuprum, and although rugby league is the more popular code in the Chiefdom, both rugby union and rugby sevens still have a decent following. Copper Cuprum had been long isolated from the international community since it is a small island archipelago located deep in the middle of the Lazarus Ocean, far from any regular shipping lanes since man first sailed ships. The nation was only discovered by the Fleftic Navy in 1914, when they were searching for the daughter of President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship was wrecked in the general vicinity of the islands. Arriving in the capital of the islands, they discovered that Chief Zed had made the President's daughter his queen, generating a sudden alliance between the two countries. And Copper Cuprum was also rich in copper, so that was a good thing for Abanhfleft too...

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation:
The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum
Demonym: Copperite
Kits: Initially, the Copperite national rugby sevens team was not supposed to wear any kits as ordinary people know them. Instead they would have played wearing only white loincloths and nothing else. However, in the interests of modesty and compliance with the international standard, the Copperite team has elected to wear a new uniform with alternating black and white hoops and white shorts.
Team colors: Black and white
Style modifier: +1.00 (A balanced team with a slight focus on offense)
Head coach: Count Tumale Boweba (48 y/o, Copper Cuprum)
Notes: It is Copperite tradition to slit the throat of a live chicken before a game and then spread the spilled blood on the field. However, after the Valladar authorities advised the Copperite Football Federation against performing this tradition after local audiences were shocked by this tradition, it has been decided that in place of this tradition, Copperite players will now cut off the head of a rubber chicken before a game and then toss the head around like a hot potato. However, Copperite players will now perform the chicken sacrificing ritual whether or not the other team (or the event organizers for that matter) likes it. The Copperites hope to turn this tradition into their version of the haka.

STARTING SEVEN
Key: Number, name (in boldface), position, age

HOME STADIUM: FIRST COPPERITE BANK STADIUM

First Copperite Bank Stadium (capacity 50,000) is the Copperite national rugby union and rugby sevens team's home stadium. Located in Wa Deg, the capital of Copper Cuprum, it is also the home ground of the Wa Deg Giants of the Copperite Rugby League, Wa Deg Carabiners of the Rugby Coalition and Wa Gon Giants A.F.C. of Copperite League Two.

RP PERMISSIONS

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (or soccer; American football is called "gridiron" and is considered a niche sport at best). Rugby union is the most popular form in Elejamie, with rugby league having a small but loyal fanbase. However, it wasn't until 2016 when there finally was an officially sanctioned rugby sevens tournament was announced: The ERC 7s, which begins on the fourth Friday of August and lasts for three days. Simply put, all twelve teams in that season's ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) are divided into two groups of six and play a single round robin tournament to see whether they'll play for the Cup, the Plate or the Bowl. The first group's games are played on the Friday, the second group's games are played on the following Saturday and the semi-finals, 3PPOs and Cup/Plate/Bowl finals are played on Sunday afternoon/evening. The third tournament in Rosetta saw the Coventry Wyverns beat their cross-river rivals Avon Knights 27-20, thanks to a late try from Mical Caerofim breaking the tie and avoiding overtime. The Elejamie City Eagles were surprise Plate winners after beating heavy favourites Auckhampton 17-9, whereas the Coventry Jesters, making their first ERC appearance since 2005, took home the Bowl after shutting out Los Reyes RC 23-0.

At the end of the last Sevens Series, Elejamie finished top of the table thanks to two runner-up spots (AVBF Sevens 3 and Watson's Bay 7s), a tournament win (URSA Sevens) and a quarter-final cup exit in the Savojar People's Trophy stage (Savojar International Sevens) resulted in them getting 58 points, just seven points ahead of main rivals Lisander, as well as a qualifying spot in the revived Rugby Sevens World Cup; indeed, they had essentially won the Minor Premiership overall after their quarter-final win in the Kiaser Colonies, as no matter what would've happened in the semis or the final, they would still finish top of the table. However, the R7WC didn't go so smoothly. After winning their opening two games against Nova Anglicana and the Main Nation Ministry (both by the same score, 26-12), they'd lose 24-21 at the last minute in their match against the Alpine Union to finish in second place. Although they bounced back with another 26-12 win over Nova Anglicana, things seemed to go wrong as they'd lose their semi-final against eventual runners-up Hutanjia 26-19 and would get thumped in the third-placed playoff by Darmen 29-12.

Season of Sevens is about to start, and in the rugby-loving nation of Lisander, a completely new team is being formed. Composed mainly of Under 23 players, the new Lisanderian Sevens will train under the strict regime of Gaetan Morian for both the Sevens Series and the Olympic Qualifiers against Alice Bay and the Imperan Rugby Sevens Selects.

"Since Imperan League unified its Olympic Team, in last Winter Games, we are worried. Unlike Cricket and much like in Ice Hockey, there's no possibility of fielding Lisanderian and foreign players together. Lisander Rugby Union was completely against merge the teams, and we're not that above Alice Bay. Have a look at recent Alicean results. Jonathan Cape, from Southland and Crux, is playing like a charm. Alice Bay professional system, with teams divided by districts, was a great plan and worked much well. And the ABRU is confident. So we'll have a qualifier. Only the best of Imperan Rugby will qualify. So we decided to select a core team for this season. No players joining and no players leaving, except in the case of serious injuries" - Gaetan Morian said in an interview to TheRugbyZone.

The first challenge for this team is defending the AVBF Sevens title. The Lisanderian team won the last edition of the same event, and returns to Burgunden expecting another great result. Most of the selected players already have defended Junior Irises, Like Hugo Pilar and Ricardo Porto. Matias Baudelaire, the Lisanderian Fly-Half playing in Elejamie University League, and the captain Gaetan Latta return from the R7WC roster. And the great surprise of this team is probably the new starter Scrum-Half, Mis Morian. The younger brother of Irises-capped Guilherme Morian already played for the first XV, but was chosen for the Sevens Team and accepted the position.

Another featured fact comes from Valls Rugby. The Official Matchday supplier presented a new set of uniforms for the Sevens Series. The presentation was in last September 26, Founders day. The new shirt is fluorescent green, and at the same time, pays homage to the nation's founders, who arrived in the vessels of the Order of the Cross of Azure, with a texture that blends fleurs-de-lis with a stylized compass rose and the Azure Cross in its centre. Valls Rugby is expected to launch striking uniforms to the other nations on its portfolio, Alice Bay and Hutanjia.

Schedule:

Friday 11:00: Alpine Union (14) vs Alice Bay (18)
Friday 13:20: Greythrone (UR) vs Alpine Union (14)
Friday 15:15: Hutanjia (2) vs Alpine Union (14)

Saturday 13:20: Alpine Union (14) vs Kelssek (UR)
Saturday 15:15: Plate and Bowl Quarterfinals

In the previous cycles, the national 7s team was made with rugby union players rather than proper rugby 7s players, but due to the popularity of Rugby 7s in the Alpine Union, the Alpine Rugby Football Union (ARFU) has decided to use exclusively 7s players for the national 7s team. The coaching staff also changed because it was the same guys and girls coaching the national union and 7s teams. However since this change was decided, the Alpine Union has decided to go isolationist and this may be the last competition the Alpine Union is participating in.

As predicted, facing a more superior team, The Gambits has to admit they still not good enough. Defeat 12-42 to Abanhfleft, Greythrone unfold their regular sevens including Minh Koetje and Carson Sperberg as props, Emory Maltba as a hooker, Eusebio Mucha as Scrum-half, Rusty Destefani in fly-half position, captain Victor Jenkins in the center and Omer Hernadez deployed as a winger.

The Gambit successful have a double try and one success conversion to make it 12 points for them.

When contacted, Head coach Mike Limpoon said he satisfied with his team performance, and this is an important platform for his players to seek more experience in the international arena. Team Assistant Coach, Stuart Amora said the team has been training vigorously for the past few months and he believes they can demonstrate some quality performance in the next game.

“Hello, good evening, Neu Engollon and to our always wonderful International viewers. I'm Magda Wertauer and you're tuned into the NETV 7 Sports Special Update. My regular co-host, Karl Demais, is out there on the grounds of Confederacy Park, recording interviews and enjoying all there is to offer from the various vendor and beverage tents. We hope to connect back up with him later. It's been an exciting morning so far here in Burgunden, with the first matches kicking off soon after the gates opened at the Alpen View Brew Festival. This is the fourth edition of the sevens tournament, but within those four years a lot of history has been made, enough to fill volumes and sports museums.

So, seeing as this is NETV 7 and we're in Burgunden, our home broadcasting city, what many of our viewers want to know is how did the Goats do, first of all? Okay, so that's if one of our regular viewers happened to be trapped in a bank heist, or down in an underground manhole reparing wires or utility pipes, or in a rare valley or mountain without any cell or television reception. Then....then, maybe...I could believe that you didn't watch the opening match of the Goats rugby sevens team at the AVBF, but only then. They played Kyrjasmark, by the way, a nation that we have not seen here, let alone in any rugby tournament so far. The goats came out swinging and dominated the match early on, but that's not a given these days.

This time, it was the truth as Johann Dorff, Captain of the team, led the Goats to victory in their first match of the tournament. You have to keep in mind that they still have a tough match ahead with Lisander, so to lose any ground, even against newcomers is a touchy thing. In addition, there is the feeling that this squad is really shaking things out with so many veterans gone from the previous few years and a new group trying to take on the leadership roles of the team. One of the former players, Jean Semmes, is head coach of the Goats union squad but in this capacity, is serving as assistant for the sevens squad, backing up veteran coach Rolf Mertzen, who is 18 years his senior. They've been quite a team and are working these boys into the ground to become a more solid squad and able to take on the wild variety of styles thrown at them, not just by the predictable greats on the pitch, but those who have never competed on the world stage before.

So was the case today where they didn't know what to expect from the team from Kyrjasmark. They needn't worry as they dominated and continued to run in tries from every player on the backs and quite a few forwards. Yes, Kyrjasmark was having a bad morning, but the Goats were having a really good morning, too, and they capitalized on that. Speed was a factor here as the Borkyrs didn't seem to be able to keep up and throw a lot of tackles in the way to impede Goats progress. Gianni, Felix and Hugo Koernsoff ran a lot of those meters and Felix was particularly great at running down his own punted ball on two occasions to run it through breaks in the Borkyr lines.

We will show highlights of the match after the break coming up from our sponsors. Please stay tuned for more NETV 7s Special update..."

Greythrone 29–21 Alpine Union

The Gambits register their first win after win unconvincingly to Alpine Union 29-21 with five tries and two conversions. Rusty Destefani is a star today with three successful tries and one conversion. Powerful Bandit fly-half makes a Greythrone camp jubilant for this performance. For this game, Mike Limpoon line up some new fresh legs including Michael Taylor, Denver Linhares, and Ruan Delmont.

After two games, The Gambit in fifth place in GROUP B after one loss and one win for four points. Next game, Greythrone will be facing Alice Bay and sure another big team they have to match.

The results are positive after two games. I would write only one story per day, since you can watch all my effusiveness by meep @cat_scott by following the real time of the match for TV5 Sports, which is also streaming all Lisander games. Also all other games on TV5 Sports 2 (it's channels 53 and 54, after TV5 News and TV5 Family, just go zapping on your remote control). However, I was excited about the victory over Neu Engollon.

The new Irises did not start as well, in fact. In the first game, a team still running slow, only managed a lean victory against Retricoal, thanks to the pack of forwards, always a bunch of fighters, winning several scrums and guaranteeing precious meters in a game that was mostly restricted to the midfield. Gaetan Latta stood out, surrounding and taking the opponent's fullback to the corner of the field when the match was 14-14, just over a minute from the end. It was a try, but the inexperienced Fly-half from Retricoal was betrayed by the wind and his kick passed two meters from the posts. The last campaign in opponent's field was safe and quiet, with lots of passing and Matias Belvedere finishing with a safe try and a perfect conversion. 21-19, enough to wake the team, fortunately.

The second match is now over, and I'm positively impressed with the team. I think the food and local beer did well to them (I'm not getting a penny to advertise). Lisander remained calm during the whole game, even before new names that were not so well known. Neu Engollon also took advantage of the offseason to bring new blood to the team that has in Johann Dorff the leading figure that on our side is comparable to that of Latta.

But what surprised me is that the game was more open than the previous one. Lisander v Neu Engollon is always a very frank match, with both teams having many chances. Although it is not as strong rivalry against Elejamie, see the green jerseys (and what a green... I still need to accept it... may take some time...) facing the burgundy jerseys is always the promise of a great game. The great work of Ricardo Porto, converting a Drop Goal early in the game and another try, as well as another good defense performance, were vital to the result. We made more penalties than expected, a signal that the team needs to get their foot on the brake. The other two tries, one of Guilherme Roux and the other of Christian Alte, came out of a great game of passes. If you strengthen the foundation, this team goes far. Alte, by the way, was chosen the name of the game by the team of TRZ, information they just sent me by message.

Confederacy Park, Burgunden, NE

Erica Toft was relatively happy and in a good place these days. Yes, she'd lost her father last year and gone through a rough divorce a couple years previous to that, but through her own determination and the help of friends and family, including her mother and brother David, things were moving along now.

On the positive side, she was CEO of the family business, Burgunden Breueries, and looking to integrate those brands into Terembev when David vacated the beverage conglomerate to take over the helm of BDI, the other massive conglomerate enterprise the Toft family shared with investment partners.

Most of all, as she floated between vendor and beverage competitor booths checking on their welfare, she was thankful that she could count on Hoppy Jensen, the BB Master Brewer, being chained down at the breuerie today.
Literally, he was chained to the floor so that he didn't wander across town to the park to cause trouble. Some might consider it kidnapping, technically, but for those who knew Hoppy, they knew how well such action was justified. Still, it could cause an issue were he, or any of the other staff or managers, to perhaps report his current condition. Perhaps she should discuss this with David further?

Elsewhere on the grounds, the beer tents were doing brisk sales and blowing through kegs. The food tents were really starting to see long lines and the first band, the Chrysalides, four ladies from Gylias, were preparing to start the first live set on the main stage for the festival.

News that the Goats had been handed their first defeat, courtesy of the Lisander Irises, was causing quite a bit of grumbling across the grounds, as several festival attendees were also there to watch the rugby matches inbetween runs to the beer and food tents. Some of the booths had secondary mobile carts moving among the exhibition pitches, so there were some rugby fans that wouldn't make it to the main grounds until later in the evening. Erica was not much for sports, so she didn't really care either way, other than it affected the mood of the patrons at their festival. Were the Goats to lose successive matches, it might make for a bit of unrest among the crowds, many of whom were not foreign, but had traveled from within the Confederacy to enjoy both the festival and the tournament.

Suddenly, Erica felt much more weighted down.

The National team is struggling again to advance to the Cup.Since some events ago,the team has constantly gone through the Plate, sometimes missing by a few, sometimes missing quite ugly.
By the way,the team is hardly going to pass to the Cup,having accumulated two losses and only a victory, against Apox. They've lost again, this time to Elejamie, unfortunately. There's only two matches missing,a game against Blaneu, and a battle against current group leaders Barunia.
