Mertopa is holding its Parliament elections. All of the Parliament, which is Mertopa’s sole legislative chamber, is to be elected for a 4 year term. The candidating parties are:

Nationalist party
Right-Wing, Authoritarian
Platform: Nationalism
A relatively new party led by a charismatic leader, hoping to gain seats in the Mertopan Parliament.
Election promises:
Increase trade tariffs;
Increase the power of the central government;
Decrease crime rate, boost spending on law enforcement.

Moderate party
Center
Platform: Centrism
Currently one of the 2 parties in the coalition government, the moderates wish to maintain and strengthen their position in the Parliament.
Election promises:
Promote net neutrality;
Prevent any radical reforms;
Decrease tariffs and promote free trade.

Communist party
Left-wing, Authoritarian
Platform: Communism
Not currently in the Parliament, the communists’ ultimate goal is to establish a strict communist regime in Mertopa.
Election promises:
Increase the power of the central government;
Nationalize private property and establish a planned economy;
Boost military spending.

Christian party
Center, Authoritarian
Platform: Fundamentalism
The Christian party’s main goal is to establish their presence in the Mertopan Parliament, in which they currently do not have any seats.
Election promises:
Criminalize abortion;
Decrease the size of the military;
Strengthen religious education in schools.

Liberal party
Right-wing, Libertarian
Platform: Liberalism
Currently the largest party in the opposition, the liberals are the main contenders to the present coalition government.
Election promises:
Privatize the healthcare system;
Legalize LGBT marriage;
Decrease tariffs and promote free trade.

Anarchist party
Center, Libertarian
Platform: Anarchism
The smallest party in the Parliament, the anarchists wish to increase their numbers and consolidate their position.
Election promises:
Decentralize the government;
Legalize all drugs;
Abolish copyright law.

Progressive party
Left-Wing, Libertarian
Platform: Progressivism
Having recently chosen a new leader, the progressives are vying for the votes of the left-wing voters.
Election promises:
Boost spending for research and development;
Decrease the size of the military;
Promote net neutrality.

Socialist party
Left-wing
Platform: Socialism
The largest party in the Parliament and coalition government, the socialists have recently been involved in a corruption scandal and face decreasing popularity among voters. Their primary concern is preserving their position in the Mertopan Parliament.
Election promises:
Enact affirmative action policies;
Increase taxes and boost spending on social welfare;
Increase government intervention in the economy.

President Keßler and the ruling coalition government has endorsed the Moderate Party, donating a sum equivalent of 10,000 USD. President Keßler has been quoted as saying “the victory of the moderates and centrists over radicals is paramount and must be sought.”

The United Democratic Republics of Viksberg endorses the Moderate Party.

With the first election results coming in, the Moderate and Progressive parties begin talks about a possible coalition government. The President of Mertopa, who is a member of the Socialist party, insists that the Socialists be included in any coalition agreement.

The Foreign Affairs Committee informs that the Provisional Assembly of Experts gives it's support to the Socialist Party, and hopes for a peaceful election cycle.

The Covenant of Man, endorses the Progressive party, despite its libertarian leanings.
