I'm new, my question is does it even make a difference what you type? Or does simply a bunch of letters give you extra credit for ranking and stuff...?

Not beyond our forum "titles". I am ranked as "Senator" because I have between 2,500 and 5,000 posts to my name, for instance (these are just fun political-related titles that [violet], our administrator, saw fit to give us). Forum posts have no bearing on your in-game statistics. ;)
