Current US-Canadian border disputes

Did not think Canada and the US had any modern border disputes but found out they do. The dispute that seems to be making the news these days is the Machias Seal Island dispute. That island is located between the US state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. None of the prior treaties between the US and UK. and later US and Canada actually mentioned Machias Seal Island. The Canadians in the 20 century built a lighthouse and a home for the lighthouse keeper but the US does not officially recognize Canadian ownership of the island.

This dispute has been kind of heating up since Maine lobster fishermen complain that the Canadians are invading there lobster fishing areas. Some towns in Maine rely heavily on lobster fishing for there economic survival. That is why this is sometimes called the Lobster war.

Some think this border issue which has not been paid much attention for decades should be solved before something of value (oil) is possibly discovered. If oil is discovered chances are this or any of the other US-Canadian disputes could drag on for years and possibly get out of hand.

I am not that sure about the other disputes but when it comes to Machias Seal Island, I think the Canadians should keep the island while US should get more of the waters around the island. The specific waters the Maine fishermen are directly claiming. That should keep everyone happy.

From looking at the map, my interpretation is that it depends on if someone thinks latitude should take precedence over longitude or vice versa. Horizontally, the island looks as if it is solidly on the US side, but vertically; the island looks as if it should go to Canada.

Threaten Canada with "fire and fury" via Tweet, go the the UN and threaten to anihillate Canada with weapons of mass destruction, call the Canadian Premier "Juvenile Justin," brag about how much bigger American Bacon is compared to Canadian Bacon, horn in on a meeting between White House staff and Icelandic diplomats bringing a proposal for a face-to-face meeting, get bored after 45 minutes of trying to pay attention to people talking about subjects other than yourself, order your staff to make the meeting happen, strike a commemorative coin/Nobel Prize participation medal, get angry when Canada insists on replacing your KFC mashed potatoes with poutine, call the meeting off, fire or force out all the Canada experts in your administration up to and including the Secretary of State who privately called you a "f**king moron," call the meeting back on, go to the meeting with no plans, call Trudeau "honorable" and "tough" and claim to have "a great relationship" with him, agree to call off joint exersizes with Iceland to please Canada without consulting anyone in your own government, not to mention any allies and wind up ceding everything north of the Missouri and Ohio Rivers to Canada.

So pretty much the way the US Administration handled North Korea.

Just calculate the economic value of all the disputed areas and divide the areas into two economically valuable halves.

I voted for 50/50, but in reality, I don't agree with that, because all of a sudden there's a clear advantage for the USA. Canada has no clear advantage, however, it should be considered that there could be one. Instead, an international park - a place where no single nation exists, but belongs to both nations - should be declared there. Many birds and different species live there, and it could serve as an example of the Canada-USA alliance. It would be considered part of the Bay of Fundy and belong to both Maine and New Brunswick, and the water around the island (in the grey zone) would be international waters.

The majority of the presence there are birds; and Grand Manan is basically a massive bird (and tick) sanctuary. So why fight over it when it could be literally for the birds?
