Thread for Gamers IX: God Howard Starfield Edition

Postby The Huskar Social Union » Sat Aug 18, 2018 2:29 am

Hey Im Huskar, i decided to OP again as no one else put up another thread when we hit 500 on the last one, so deal with it.

This is the thread where you talk about the vidya gaems, be it games you are currently playing, games you like, games you hate. Business practices you like or dont like etc etc, what platform you play on, who you enjoy watching play games etc it all fits in here, just try not to be dicks to one another about which fancy plastic box you play them on, or because someone likes a game you dont etc as thats frankly fucking childish and immature, so pay attention to the image below:

Previous Iteration's of the thread:
-Thread for Gamers the First
-Thread for Gamers the Second
-Thread for Gamers the Third Second
-Thread for Gamers the Fourth
-Thread for Gamers the Fifth
-Thread for Gamers the Sixth
-Thread for Gamers the Seventh
-Thread for Gamers the Eighth

Links to Franchise/Series/Publisher specific gaming threads in Arts and Fiction (Updated list July 2020):
-Paradox Games
-Elder Scrolls
-Star Wars (Not gaming specific)
-League of Legends
-Roblox
-Star Trek (Not gaming specific)
-Warhammer
-Total War

So yeah, talk about games ya plebs! That unexplained death circle is closing in! Dont forget to use frying pans so some petty fucks can sue you!

So I'm replaying Deus Ex Human Revolution. This time with the Director's Cut. Its a good game but I don't remember everything being this orange. The cutscenes are hard to watch sometimes.

I'm also going for a no kill no alarms run, and there are a lot of glitches involved. For example, sometimes stunned enemies randomly die, and you have to reload two checkpoints if an enemy sees you and triggers the alarm to get the no alarm achievement. These glitches. I didn't ask for this.

Poor Adam Jensen.

I loved Human Revolution, its a solid game, i never finished mankind divided though, just got distracted with other stuff. Might reinstall it on the PS4 at one point and go back to it.

Now to actually discuss something, I've been messing around with Observer because I got it for free.

I could really do without the random stealth and quick time events dealing with the Cookie Monster looking... monster, I've been getting into the grove of just mindlessly walking around and picking things up, why ruin it with actual gameplay?

i'm currently playing Star Trader : Frontiers.
It's a small, 2-D, indie space sim that's actually closer to Crusader Kings 2 in the way it handles your relationship with factions, crewmembers and contacts all across the galaxy. This game has rather low production values (great sci-fi art though) but it's pretty good in what it tries to do, i;e a space sim centered around politics and personal contacts rather than your ship.

Yep, it's one of those games with a """cinematic""" color filter.

Had a good round at Overwatch yesterday night (there's a thread for that, which I am active there. :D)

I used to play on a XBox, but as time went on, my gaming is usually restricted to my laptop now because of time constraints and portability (travelling back and forth from uni to home, repeat ad infinitum).

Transitioning back to the PC for FPS was definitely a toll for me. Not that I am bashing the consoles, but I just can't aim on Halo to save myself. Driving ad other genres are fantastic on them, but FPS and consoles just doesn't work for me. :/

Yep, it's one of those games with a """cinematic""" color filter.

For what's worth I loved the filter when playing the game for the first time. At least it added some colors, in a time (late 2000s, early 2010s) where pretty much all AAA games had this grey-ish "realistic" color palette thanks to the success of Modern Warfare and company (heck, even Mass Effect 3 and TW2 were washed-out compared to their predecessors).

Because somewhere, sometime, elitist bands of gamers started saying that walking simulators were not REAL MANLY GAMES, and since then every game that would perfectly work as a walking sim / 3D point and click game feels obliged to add some superflous gameplay sequences.

All of this. I really love games where I could just explore around with my character, doing random stuff. Even for games like GTA or Saints Row, I would just go and fool around and finish the mission an hour later into the gameplay. :P

The elitist view is just bad, I thinks. Why berate someone for doing something they like in a game?

Someone will always call something NOT REAL [Insert catagory here]. Usually only the bad examples though, but that’s something else. Point being, quality or entertainment levels are partially subjective (I can tell you why the Wii’s graphics engine is better than the Virtual Boy’s, but I can’t tell you why Ōkami looks better than Call of Duty without using subjective arguments.), but if someone says something that fulfills all the requisites to be something is disqualified because someone tacked on a new rule afterwards, you should ask yourself who made the rule, and why?

The argument about how Candy Crush players are Gamers...I’m not touching that with a 10 ft pole.

Well, in the case of walking simulators, that's mostly the result of the insane gatekeeping that exists in some parts of the Internet when it comes to video games, especially video games that are susceptible to attract the attention of people who weren't really into video game in the first place. The main problem concerning walking simulators is that publishers and studios seem to have internalized this rule, and always fear that they might be called "not a true game" if they don't add totally meaningless gameplay sequences, as if they were convinced a good story and a good setting/ambience isn't enough to carry a game. It's like all those games that could be neat exploration games but add half-assed survival elements (looking at you NMS) because otherwise they fear they might fall under the dreaded (and often nonsensical) accusation of "not enough content".

The game’s only saving graces are that it’s Rutger Hauer and it looks nice. Also the aesthetics of cyberpunk Poland and the lore are honestly pretty interesting. But the stupid stealth gameplay was just that, stupid. I don’t know how far you’ve gotten, so spoilers, but
I think it’s funny how when you have to fave off against the first actual outside of the digital world enemy, there’s literally only ONE time where it can actually kill you, and you don’t need to stealth from it, while in the digital world you constantly having to stealth from monsters.
Also there’s a big stealth section near the end that’s really awful so get ready for that.

Occasionally. Though most of the games i have that i have literally never touched were from bundles to get some games i did want. A couple i did buy on sale then said eh why did i even bother and they have sat there with like 20 minutes played for years.
