Who can Participate:
- Abydos Citizens:
Because this role play started in the region of Abydos as a regional map, some plots have been previously claimed by active citizens. Those citizens will have an opportunity to reclaim their map plots as they were before the date of October 4, 2018 through grandfathering. After October 6th, 2018, all citizens of Abydos shall apply to this Role Play through the application process below.
Abydos Allies:
Any region who shares an embassy with Abydos is invited to participate. Nations in allied regions should apply below as normal.
Invited Guests:
Occasionally, guests who do not share an embassy with Abydos may wish to participate in this role play. Requests to participate will be granted or rejected on a case by case basis. Generally, a guest player should be an experienced role player as well as tolerant enough to teach and set a great example for new people who may not fully understand how roleplays work on NationStates.
Timeline:
- The River of the Gods RP is set in the Ancient Egyptian Bronze Age and follows an alternate history of development around the Nile River. The year is 3100 BCE. Time progresses slowly and should not be jumped ahead months or years.
Weaponry:
- Bronze Age technology should be employed throughout this Role play, with NO development of new technology from outside the Bronze Age. As such spears, daggers, swords, bows and arrows, and similar weapons may be produced.
Transportation:
- The primary mode of transportation between the settlements shall be the Nile River. Please note that the Nile River flows from South to North, thus those in the South do not need rowers to travel North. Traveling from North to South will require a team of rowers to row canoes and boats South. While it may be practical to travel on land to your nearest neighbor to the North or to the South, it is impractical to travel longer distances by land. For the time period, land travel in the desert was considered dangerous. Traveling to the various oases can be performed by caravan, however these places are not sufficient for long term stays. Roads are permitted to be built, but must be built with stone and take time. It is possible to bridge the river, but the bridge shall not impede river traffic at all, and shall be considered very expensive. Damming the river is obviously not permitted.
Choosing your Plot:
- To start, you must chose one plot and roleplay your caravan getting to that plot and setting it up. You cannot just spring a new city out of nowhere, you must roleplay your development. After 2 weeks, an active player may roleplay the acquisition of an adjacent plot of land, either to your north, south, or across the river. After a month, a player can roleplay the acquisition of a third and final adjacent plot of land.
Nations may not "colonize" plots by making their second or third plot of land far from the original. You are bronze aged tribes, not vast empires.
Nations who had their plots of land chosen from the first iteration of this game, before October 3rd, 2018, may chose to keep their acquisitions, or start fresh. Grandfathered plots may not expand beyond 3 plots in total.
The maps can be found here: Map Room
On Realism:
- War War can happen, nations can fight. Nations can not, however take over the plot of another living nation. The reason for this is due to the fact this is a regional map for Abydos and some simply use it to make their factbooks and such. War is limited to plundering a neighbors plot, destroying buildings, etc. Wars shouldn't happen unprovoked and should be discussed and thoroughly planned in OOC.
Population for every 1 million nations your nation has, in the RP, you have 1,000 people. Basically, drop 3 zeroes to determine your tribes size.
Travel times: You can travel by land up to 5 plots per day, or to the next nearest oasis in a day. River travel can be done in one day both ways. This makes river travel substantially faster.
Communication: Someone needs to float that river to get that message across. There are no carrier pigeons.
Villages & Cities: Cities dont just appear. You have to quarry stone, make mud bricks, dig wells, plant farms etc. These things take time. That being said, feel free to build temples and unique things for your land.
Trade: Its perfectly acceptable to have one or two resources appropriate to the time period in your plot.
No plot has everything and obviously no stumbling upon uranium. Be civil and realistic.
Politics: This is a made up world from 3000 years ago keep your role play politics to something befitting this time period. Modeling your RP after, say, the United States or Communist Russia is a little unrealistic.
Culture: While this RP has a map that is actually the Nile River in Egypt, your tribe doesnt necessarily have to mimic Egyptian culture. In this alternate reality, it's perfectly fine to develop other gods, other cultural trends, traditions, etc. Role play out how your tribe developed culturally.
Time: there is no rush here. Take your sweet time building your tribe up, organizing and providing details.
Dont jump ahead weeks or months at a time in a post.
Fantasy: Sorry, there is no magic, mind reading, Mythic Gods, or scary monsters lurking in the deep. It is okay, however if your people believe in these things.
Unclaimable Spaces: You cant claim the pyramids to the north, The ruins of Abydos, or the Temple of Karnak to the south. These are religious pilgrimage sites open to all but to be left alone. You cant claim the Nile River as it's open to all. You cant claim the desert. You can occupy for a time, but cant claim an oasis.
