NRA Might Be Going Bust

Postby Petrasylvania » Fri Aug 03, 2018 11:05 pm

NRA Claims 'Deep Financial Trouble' May Soon Put It Out of Business

The National Rifle Association says that it’s in “deep financial trouble” — so deep in fact that it may be “unable to exist.”

The group says it is under such financial distress because New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has convinced a number of financial service providers, banks, and insurance providers against doing business with the gun-advocacy group. As a result, the NRA claims that it will be forced to end its magazine publishing and television services, and will be forced to curtail rallies and potentially shutter some of its offices.

In April, Gov. Cuomo encouraged New York-based businesses to cut ties with the NRA. “New York may have the strongest gun laws in the country, but we must push further to ensure that gun safety is a top priority for every individual, company, and organization that does business across the state,” he said in a statement. “I am directing the Department of Financial Services to urge insurers and bankers statewide to determine whether any relationship they may have with the NRA or similar organizations sends the wrong message to their clients and their communities who often look to them for guidance and support. This is not just a matter of reputation, it is a matter of public safety, and working together, we can put an end to gun violence in New York once and for all.”

In response, the NRA sued, claiming that the governor was attempting to deny the group the ability to speak freely about gun-related issues. This week, it filed an additional claim, obtained by Rolling Stone, suggesting that the move has impacted its cash flow to the point that it may soon be forced out of existence.

Some optimistic news for once. They helped clamped down on even the smallest regulations when they weren't scared of minorities arming up and then we learned they served as a Russian campaign finance pipeline. Not to mention making a convicted criminal their new President.

Good riddance.

What impact will this have on the gun debate? I think it will make it possible for reasonable measures to be passed if the NRA does go belly up.

As much as my mixed views on the 2nd amendment, some very positive, some cautionary, some negative, good riddance, they committed conspiracy against the USA, which is almost as bad as treason.

I'd guess it's a legal manoeuvre and/or fundraiser.. someone or other will bail them out - it's Trump tweet fodder. Anyway there's others, the one WRA likes because the NRA is just too liberal.

Though if NRA TV was shuttered that would be great thanks.

The NRA has some good points, but I don't think they are necessary for maintaining gun rights.

But I think "making a convicted criminal their new President" is quite a stretch considering the fact that the Mueller investigation has* been going on for over a year and hasn't found anything on President Trump...
It's overhyped in the media by anchors that privately admit its mostly fake news, and then people take it as a fact that Trump is somehow guilty because they don't agree with his political opinions- they're using the good 'ol Joseph Goebbels playbook.

I hope it is not that.
I'd be pissed off. I have zero respect for them. They are a disgrace to even gun rights activists.

I have a book signed by the coot. Maybe him being the last president of the NRA will make it worth more down the line.

This is likely a pity party campaign on their part. Or trying to play victim after the Russia scandal.

Honestly, given the amount of mission creep the NRA has had away from the gun rights debate towards generally being a bunch of alt-right hatchetmen bitching about the free press, I can't say this is a bad thing.

Which is likely what's going to happen, they're going to get a bunch of money donated from their people, claim "Everything's good now" and go back to business as usual.
From what I heard quite a few Rightwingers are kind of annoyed with the NRA lately from mission creep and caving on certain things, this is also likely designed to generate sympathy for them.

Really I'm kind of surprised that so far gun rights and gun control are minor issue this midterms, and I'm glad for it.
It seems most of the Democratic party is playing it safer, and besides Hogg (Who at this point doesn't realize his 15 minutes of fame are up) most of the people are mostly staying off gun issues this election.... well besides the handful of idiots screaming that the sky is falling over the 3D gun thing.

Really though the best solution would be a US that doesn't need a NRA.

Actually, no. He was tried and convicted. But the convictions were vacated after some complications related to witnesses and his limited immunity from prosecution. Charges weren't dismissed.

I suspect it's an attempt to increase donations in order to counteract the financial harm they anticipate from Cuomo, as well as trying to add ammo to their lawsuit. I'm not sure we'll really know just how much trouble they are actually going to be in.

Maybe stepping back from the edge of crazy town and asking the american gun owners that make up the majority of their membership where the group's priorities should be will help get states like NY to back off. If you want to find an acceptable middle ground between having strong 2nd amendment rights and safety it seems to me like most gun owners actually have the right idea. Greedily trying to move their rank and file membership to the fringes in order to pursue as many sales for gun retailers as humanly possible instead of listening to their concerns is what got them into this situation.

Yeah, I'm a little suspicious that they're blowing things out of proportion as a way to get their supporters fired up.

I wouldn't miss them, though. I think people should be allowed to own guns, but the NRA has just gone off the deep end lately.
