Renaming the Capital of Texas?

Postby San Lumen » Sat Jul 28, 2018 9:53 pm

https://www.mystatesman.com/news/local/ ... =statesman

The capital of Texas is named for the founder of the Republic of Texas Stephen F. Austin. It might be shocking for some to know the he was against banning slavery and held views many would very racist today. A recent report by the city Equity Office suggested renaming several parks and streets named for Confederacy and even the name of the city itself.

Removing Confederate monuments put up as a form of intimation is one thing but to start renaming streets and changing the name of a city as large as Austin is a very stupid idea. Its whitewashing history and makes one wonder where this movement will end.

Should a statue of Jefferson or Madison be taken down because he was a slave owner or anyone who held views we consider racist today? Should we rename Jefferson City or Madison both state capital's because their namesake where slave owners? Many counties in the south are named for confederate leaders. Their names should not be changed like the capital of Texas and streets in the city should not be.

There wouldn't be many statues left and there would be many counties and cities to rename.

What's your take NSG?

I personally feel that we should not tear down confederate statues, nor statues of those who supported undesirable things nowadays. It just seems disrespectful to history

Im inclined to agree however many of the statues that have been taken down were put up well after the Civil War during the era of Jim Crow as a form of intimation. They belong in museums.

If Texas is to properly integrate into the US then they must put aside these republican names.

Rename Austin to Obama.

Who knows? The very suggestion to rename the city is absurd.

Historical revisionism to stop the rise of neo-genocide and neo-nazism? Hell yes. I say, go for it.

As a born and bred Texan, while Austin wasn't a great person, he still was instrumental in our founding. Oh, and his name is simple and easy to pronounce. Plus, bonus, shirt space.

If they actually did do it, in a totally hypothetical situation I'd imagine they'd choose a Native name for the region.

Is it though?

Cities have been renamed for various political reasons in other countries. For instance, Saint Petersburg was changed to Leningrad and back.

Nah, just leave it as is. Most people don't even know that Austin was named after Stephen F. Austin.

Stalin saved Europe and the "Free" World from the Nazis. Average Calories in the U.S.S.R have always been higher than the U.S, at least until 1991. Progressive women's rights in the Army, equal social status for minorities.

Stalin's possessions after his death were two suits, and a bookcase.

Nandayo you talkin' about.
