A Cousin's War

The year was 2105.

Earth, then mired in the first of its unification wars, was in many places a smoking slag of blood and war. Those who wished to unify the creaking, decrepit polities of old into something stronger were pitted against those who saw their identity - nationality, religion, slipping away. There was no good, and no evil; merely conflict. There was innovation, to be sure, like medical miracle boom of the 2070s, or the invention of the space hyperdrive in 2095 by Hitoshi Sugiyama. But with Earth engulfed in bloodshed these inventions were squandered or salvaged for whatever military applications they provided.

And then the gate opened.

No one could explain the device. None of the most qualified scientific minds in the human race could hope to understand it. One moment it had been empty space next to the Moon. The next moment, it simply was. A wonder, no doubt. Of God, or of science, it seemed not to matter. All that was certain was that the object was alien.

A number of probes were sent through; what they discovered stunned the war-weary masses of Earth. It was a new galaxy, virgin space. Never before seen, never touched. Astronomers called the new galaxy Hesperia, after the Greek word for 'western land,' but most referred to it colloquially as NewSpace. For the vast majority, it was a nearly unreachable mystery. For a few, however, it provided a new home.

The first to theorize colonizing NewSpace was the Heartlander Federation, composed of embattled rural rebels in the United States and the rest of the Anglosphere. But they were soon joined by other losing factions in Earth's grinding struggles; the Shanghai Cooperative, Chinese ultra-capitalists, and the Visegrad Group, ultranationalists of Eastern Europe. All were losing their respective wars. All sensed an opportunity that would never come again.

In 2108, sixteen colony ships carrying nearly twelve million people departed Earth. An instant after they passed through, the gate closed. Again, no one could explain it. But the fact remains that it happened; and it changed the human race forever.

That could have been the end of things. But God -or science- possesses an infinite sense of humor. On August 2nd, 2388, the gate reopened. By then, some three hundred years later, mankind had long since unified and spread amongst the stars. The strange events of the early 22nd century were not totally forgotten, but they merely existed at the back of our consciousness, nearly irrelevant compared to the great wars and movements and triumphs and sorrows of the day. We had spread among the stars, yes, but they were our stars. Our galaxy. It came as no less of a shock when that other one reappeared in exactly the same spot, orbiting the moon.

And this time, we did go through. What we found was far more incredible than the first discovery. We found people, nations, whole civilizations stemming from the twelve million who had divorced themselves from us. The Slavic Union, in all its autocratic and militaristic splendor and repression. The Han Commonwealth, the perfect profit-driven corporate state. And the Clarion Confederation, a loose and chaotic amalgam of spacer clans and warrior houses from Earth's old Anglosphere. It was this last nation that gave us trouble. They didn't much care when the United Nations occupied Providence in 2392, the sparsely populated spaceport planet at the foot of the gate.

But then Clan Harmon invited the UN to take control of the planet Hollis - that was four years ago now. They probably desired UN hegemony for all the right economic reasons, not to mention their blood feud with the decidedly-anti UN Clan Everett, which also essentially ran the Confederation. We thought it was a popular move on Hollis. We thought the Harmons' vassals would approve. We tried to bring them democracy, a constitution, free commerce.

We were wrong. Today is May 7th, 2433, the third year of a brutal civil war. We've put 22 million combat troops on the planet to support the fledgling Republic of Hollis and fight its pro-Confederation enemies, who sometimes seem to be every motherfucking bastard on this planet.

Who knows, though. We've been winning handily of late. The fighting has died down somewhat. A lot of the rebellious clans have been forced to the negotiating table. General Trueba says we can finally see light at the end of the tunnel, and I find more reasons to agree than not. My year-long deployment on Hollis with the 153rd Infantry Division started two weeks ago, so hopefully the guys and I will get through this without too much hubbub and I can come back home. I find a lot of frustration here in Camp Darmawan, in the middle of nowhere. These aren't our people we're fighting for, not really. More like cousins. They left us, remember? They fled Earth. It's their war. A cousin's war.

-Lt. Col. Mustafa Razdan
71st Infantry Regiment
3rd Brigade
153rd Infantry Division

Hello and welcome to A Cousin's War. Our plot arc will follow soldiers of B Company, 1st Battalion, 71st Infantry Regiment, 153rd Infantry Division as they attempt to pacify the rural province of Cordelia, purging it of clan rebels hostile to the UN and its ally, the Republic of Hollis. You will take control of a United Nations Army soldier in one of B Company's platoons as the unit navigates the challenges of what is essentially an occupational war.

As a military science fiction RP, this setting takes some inspiration from Star Wars, Star Trek, Freelancer and the Halo universe. Real historical influences are primarily the Vietnam and Iraq Wars - as you may have surmised, what I described above is not dissimilar from a Vietnam in space. That's sort of the situation the UN finds itself in on Hollis.

Please review at least some of the lore and timeline information before you apply. You needn't know all of it; just have a passing familiarity.

-I am OP, my word is law
-Don't be an asshole. Take vigorous arguments to telegrams.
-Don't godmod your character. We're infantry grunts here, not cybernetic super soldiers
-Limit to one character at a time
-Don't even think about posting one liners. That said, this being a character RP, I understand if posts are not altogether that long. You should be able to crank out at least a solid paragraph, though. Decent, high-school level writing is expected.
-Do your best to stay active. If you don't make an appearance (OOC or IC or telegram) for 72 hours, I may consider booting you. I don't mind absences as long as you let me know in some way or other.

-July 2428- The McNair Incident. As anti-UN sentiment runs amok in the Clarion Confederation, CIS agents uncover rings of UN operatives and spies in the Hollis and Brewster systems. Before Clan Everett can get a handle on the situation, the CIS hunt down and kill or imprison 92 members of the UN's Intelligence and Security Directorate. War between the two powers is narrowly avoided. Diplomatic relations are closed.

-November 2429- Clan Harmon opens up backdoor negotiations with UN authorities on Providence, with the intention of joining the UN in the near feature, against its own publicly stated wishes and against the sentiments of the other major Confederate clans.

-May 2430- Clan Harmon issues the Rossburn Declaration, asserting "the right of its own people to determine their course independently of the Confederation," and effectively inviting the UN to take control of the Hollis system. Having badly misjudged the attitudes of their vassal clans, the Harmons are immediately confronted with a rebellion of the Clans Stephenson, Maynard, Wallace, Avery and Cooper. Only the Dunnes and Morrises stand by their lords, and even these houses begin to fracture from differences of opinion.

-May 10th- First attempt at UN landing is blocked by the Confederate Navy

-May 16th- Battle of Grandview. The UN, with the overwhelming force of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 10th Fleets, wins a decisive battle over the Confederate Navy in orbit of Hollis' largest moon. Having lost nearly all of their carriers and a third of their total strength, the ruined Confederate Navy withdraws to deep Anglo space to lick its wounds. Special forces are deposited on Hollis before their departure.

-May 19th- After a 60-hour preliminary orbital bombardment of rebel defenses, UN Marines and Army Special Forces make landings at 11 different points on Hollis proper, with widely varying receptions. In the capital city and Harmon stronghold of Canora, the locals greet them with a muted enthusiasm, while the landing force at the equatorial settlement of Langdon is all but wiped out by furious armed resistance mounted by Clan Stephenson.

-June 2430- The UN continues to deposit forces onto Hollis, primarily large formations of Army regulars. In Bampton, the planet's most populous city, a fierce urban battle for control erupts.
Across the Confederation, the Everetts and their allies apprehend every member of the Harmon family they possibly can. Some are put through show trials - a few are executed publicly within weeks, to general satisfaction.

-July 2430- The Slavic Union issues a strong condemnation of the intervention on Hollis without committing to a belligerent position against the UN. The Han Commonwealth, rival of the Union, is even coyer, calling for "restraint from all parties." The Battle of Bampton continues to rage with no clear advantage to either side. Casualties are steep. UN forces continue to fan out and deploy from their landing points, commencing a number of operations against the clans of Hollis.

-August 2430- Operation Yellowknife sees mass employment of airpower and orbital bombardment, allowing UN forces to occupy and mostly pacify the northwestern cities of Marianna and Camden. After weeks of house-to-house fighting, the Wallace defenders of Bampton are being ground down, with the upper hand now firmly with attacking UN forces.

-September 2430- Last conventional Confederate ground formations are destroyed. Operations Bookmark and Gateway deploy large numbers of UN ground forces into the countryside of the Eastern continent, marking the first time the expeditionary force is asked to pacify rural areas. Rebel defenders in Bampton are reduced to just a few dozen blocks of the Old City.

-October 2430- With most of them having fought to the death, less than two hundred insurgents finally surrender in Bampton’s Old City on October 9th, marking the end of the battle. Some 150,000 people have died, with nearly half that figure being civilian deaths. Official UN death count stands at 20,000 with insurgent losses marked at three or four times that. In Canora, the military leadership of the expeditionary force helps to inaugurate the Republic of Hollis (RoH) with Kenneth Harmon as de facto head. Parliamentary elections are held, although they run in less than half of Hollis’ 83 provinces, most of which are considered too dangerous and militant for pro-Earth officials to show their faces.

-November 2430- Insurgent sleeper cells in Marianna assassinate some one hundred UN officers, RoH officials, and Clan Harmon representatives. The revolt is quickly put down, but not without some psychological repercussions reverberating among the pro-Earth leadership. With the conventional warfare stage of the intervention drawing to a close, Earth discontinues the United Nations Hollis Expeditionary Force and establishes a more permanent institution – United Nations Military Administration – Hollis; UNMAH. UNMAH would be tasked with setting up the Republic of Hollis as a viable state, sharing power with the Harmon clan with concentrated authority on military matters. General Emilio Trueba, accomplished Army commander late of the Jovian War and Droid Uprising, is named overall commander.

-December 2430- Battle of Tuesday Creek some 100 miles south of Monterrey. A Marine regiment sent to destroy a reported insurgent group led by clan scion Nathaniel Avery falls into an ambush while ascending the Glover Mountains. Although they fight off the assault with airstrikes and kill nearly a thousand of the enemy, the Marines suffer three hundred fatalities of their own. Avery is not found. It is the last battle of the first year of the war. Some 600,000 people have already perished since the intervention began in May, mostly civilians. UNMAH records 53,000 combat deaths among its troops for the year.

-January 2431- UNMAH and RoH authorities create the Federal Police, and the former initiates an aggressive recruitment and training effort in order to create an effective indigenous fighting force. Results are very mixed; recruitment stalls in rural areas, and defections to rebel groups along with double-dealing of information are common.
-February 2431- A commando team from UNSOF succeeds in apprehending Raymond Cooper; a prominent leader of the rebellious clan, while killing his younger brothers Ethan and Phillip. It is a major intelligence coup for Earth’s forces, as well as a PR victory. Supply networks and spy rings in and around Langdon are exposed and eliminated. However on the last day of the month, a concerted IED and sniper attack kills the UN commander and a dozen other officers at Camp Dyachkov. This is considered vengeance for the earlier raid on the Coopers.
-March 2431- Ground spotters misidentify rebel positions and call in airstrikes on the farming hamlet of West Polk, killing upwards of two hundred civilians. The 8th Regiment of the 231st Infantry Division is all but wiped out at the Battle of Gainsborough near Camden. Meanwhile other Army units are having success rooting out insurgents of Clan Wallace in provinces adjoining Bampton.
-April 2431- First known ‘insider attack’ as rebels posing as federal police gun down a Marine colonel and others in the far north. UNMAH requests more troops for the ongoing pacification effort; Earth obliges. UN combat strength reaches 11,000,000 at the end of the month.
-May 2441- Civilian contractors begin to arrive in droves to help improve the infrastructure and bureaucracy of the RoH. By the end of the month, two dozen are killed by rebel reprisals.
-June 2431- Operation Virgo in the far south of the Eastern continent is a rousing tactical success for the UN, with tens of thousands of rebels killed over a five-week effort. Meanwhile the Clarion Confederation makes the first attempt to run the naval blockade of Hollis; all four Confederate vessels are caught and destroyed.
-July 2431- Marine barracks in the western town of Richfield come under furious rebel assault. Over 200 are killed in various stages of sleep or wakening by fewer than thirty attackers, who are also killed to a man. Operation Tungsten fails to capture any of the senior leadership of Clan Stephenson and results in heavy losses among UNSOF personnel.
-August 2431- Concealed orbital defenses close to the north polar region manage to bring down the UNNS destroyer Strider, which is lost with all hands. Reprisal operations exorcise insurgents from Dudley and Cobalt provinces, but five thousand civilian deaths are inflicted.
-September 2431- General Trueba offers to halt heavy bombing tactics on Hollis if Confederate authorities begin steps towards a “mutually negotiated transfer of authority to the UN” on Hollis. The Confederation refuses.
-October 2431- A fourth blockade-running attempt finally gets Confederate vessels through to Hollis; two of five ships succeed in delivering special forces troops and biological agents to rebel forces. Captain James Afton, the highest-ranking survivor of the effort, is promoted to Rear Admiral and placed in charge of all Confederate blockade-running operations.
-November 2431- An Army division based outside the town of Blue Dome is devastated by a biological weapon, later identified as the Slavic Union-bred agent Světového Jedlíčka, or “world eater.” Nearly ten thousand soldiers and civilians are killed before the outbreak is properly contained.
-December 2431- An assault on Vestler Prison in Bampton breaks out over a hundred insurgents and other political prisoners. Among the freed is Elijah Maynard, third in line to that house. Only a score of the prisoners are ever apprehended again. UNMAH puts fatalities for the year at 85,017.

-January 2432- As the year opens, the UN commands sixteen million combat troops on the planet.
-February 2432- After pursuing a sizable rebel force north of Gravenhurst for a week, the 18th Marine Division finally corners them in the mountain town of Argenta, home to about 100,000 people. A fierce battle to capture it commences.
-March 2432- Last rebel resistance in Argenta eliminated on the 22nd. To their great consternation, the Marines discover that the greater part of the rebel force fled into mountain tunnels. After fruitlessly pursuing them and then bombing the cave complex into oblivion, they are left with no enemy to fight. Close to two thousand Marines have died. The 18th takes their frustration out on the town of Argenta, with some companies engaging in looting, beatings, murders and rape. It takes 48 hours for commanders to get the division fully under control. An estimated 700 civilians perish before they depart.
-April 2432- A record 11,400 UN personnel lose their lives this month.
-May 2432- Battle of Moultrie. The 107th Mechanized Division, with help from Special Forces and airstrikes, decisively defeat a conventionally fielded force of 40,000 loyal to Clan Stephenson. Fatalities are 1,600 KIA for the UN vs. close to 10,000 for the Stephensons.
-June 2432- The United Nations’ Intelligence and Security Directorate initiates Operation Buckler, which authorizes bribes, extrajudicial imprisonment and torture on Hollis, even in those provinces not designated war zones. The intent is to remove as much of the rebel intelligence network as possible.
-July 2432- Mutiny of the carrier UNS Baldr in the Epsilon Eridani system delays UNMAH requests for a tighter blockade; in fact some ships of the 6th fleet are diverted to the Milky Way to help with the crisis. As a result, Confederate blockade runners are able to achieve a 60% success rate in the summer of 2510. Men, materiel, and intelligence trickle in to various rebel strongholds on Hollis.
-August 2432- A botched special operations raid against the Averys in Erath province results in a rescue attempt mounted by the army. However, the Averys used the downed transports as bait to lure more and more Army units into an ambush, which commences the Battle of Heath Springs on the 19th. Only after liberal usage of airpower can the commandos and rescuers alike be evacuated; not before eight hundred soldiers have been killed. The dead include seven officers at or above the rank of colonel.
-September 2432- Back on Mars, the Families of Slain Veterans of Hollis form on the 3rd. Their first antiwar protests are held that week in Nueva Santiago. These are relatively small affairs with a few hundred participants, but they receive considerable press coverage. A few demonstrations are held in solidarity on Earth, in Stockholm, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Mumbai.
-October 2432- The UN Security Council conducts an internal, unpublished study on the war in Hollis. This is the Mahama Report, which analyzes the political attitudes of inhabitants on the planet. It concludes that short of massive troop number escalations on Hollis, the war could drag on for years. “Despite Earth’s military advantages,” it stated, “and despite a kill ratio of more than 5:1 in the military’s favor, the republican government lacks the popular support and legitimacy it needs from Hollis’ population. There are still hundreds of millions of people convinced that the UN intervention threatens their independence and way of life, and hundreds of millions more who are so apathetic towards either side that they simply wish for the fighting to end. Without a firm commitment of many more years from the UN, this report can only conclude that a defeat of Confederate forces is not yet in sight.” Secretary-General Julius Van der Plaas buries the report.
-November 2432- Instructed directly from Adrian’s Rest, the capital world of the Confederation, rebel forces launch a coordinated offensive which they have been planning since that spring. Heavy fighting erupts in 59 of 83 provinces. There are some initial rebel successes, including the brief capture of the city of Monterrey, but an influx of reinforcements along with ever-present UN airpower blunts the most furious assaults.
-December 2432- General Trueba announces the greater Monterrey area ‘purged of the enemy’ on the 8th. UN forces reverse all of the clans’ progress from the previous month. UNMAH records an enemy body count of nearly a hundred thousand by the time the fighting has wound down around Christmas. Lost among the military successes, however, is the fact that not one of the rebellious houses has been brought to the negotiating table by their seemingly crushing defeat. UN fatalities are recorded at 92,371 for the year.

-January 2433- The year opens with a new high of 22 million UN troops on Hollis. Operations Drake and Jackal begin in the far west around Camden, with the main target being Clan Maynard.
-February 2433- UN forces achieve perhaps their best result of the war so far, defeating the Maynards’ forces handily at every turn with comparatively low casualties. Operation Drake captures family head Jamieson Maynard, while his sons Hunter and Tyler, and his daughter Amelia are all killed in battle, severely weakening the house. Elijah Maynard of Vestler Prison fame is now considered the de facto chief of the family. He brings the Maynards to the table and opens negotiations with UN forces.
-March 2433- At a family gathering in Marianna, 12 members of Clan Dunne, loyal to the UN-backed republican government, are killed by a bomb attack. In retribution, UNMAH launches Operation Copperhead, which succeeds in killing or capturing many of the Confederate special forces sent to help support the rebellion. It is a major intelligence coup for the UN, which exposes a number of insurgent cells in every major city. By the end of the month, the renegade members of the Morris clan have switched their allegiance to the republican government. The Wallaces join the Maynards at the negotiating table.
-April 2433- UNMAH discovers from its captives that the Slavic Union is responsible for smuggling a great deal of supplies and some foreign volunteers to the rebels on Hollis. Not wishing to start a war with a major power, Secretary-General Van der Plaas can only tighten the blockade around Hollis and enact an embargo on the Union. Operation Nazareth marks another military victory for UNMAH, this time in the northeast. Clan Cooper’s forces suffer a grievous blow and they too join the negotiating process. A publicly penitent Helena Wallace, matriarch of that family, convinces the Confederate government and Clan Everett to join the peace process. Talks convene on the Han Commonwealth world of XX on the 27th.
-May 2433- With the fighting all across Hollis in a lull, General Trueba aims for one further attempt at a decisive victory. The target he selects is Somervell Province, one of the most hostile and ardently pro-Confederate subdivisions of the entire planet. Trueba concentrates seven divisions, two Marine and five Army, on the province, which lies halfway between Langdon and Monterrey. However this does draw manpower away from field operations elsewhere on Hollis . . .
-May 7th- The 153rd Infantry Division, recently arrived on Hollis as part of the most recent troop surge, takes up its deployment at Camp Darmawan in Cordelia province, about 300 kilometers west of Marianna. The “Flyin’ 153rd” will take over the security assignment of the 91st Infantry Division, which is transferring out after the completion of their year-long tour.

Clan Harmon- The rulers of Hollis for 150 years, the Harmons were once a powerful family claiming descent from English nobles. However, their century-old blood feud with the ruling Clan Everett has finally caught up to them. After the Harmons threw their lot in with the United Nations of Earth, the Everetts retaliated by imprisoning or executing all the Harmons they could catch beyond Hollis. This has weakened the house even as they maintain most of their power as the leaders of the new, UN-backed Republic of Hollis. The Everett retribution has made the family more pro-Earth than ever. Patriarch Kenneth Harmon currently serves as the 1st President of the new state.

Clan Dunne- Based on the long, narrow northern peninsula known as the Knife Blade, the Dunnes have always been steadfast supporters of their liege lords the Harmons, and nothing has changed in latter years. They remain firmly behind the Republic and the UN.

Clan Morris- Although Samuel Morris has consistently backed the Harmons and UNMAH, his house is internally divided over the war. Some cadet branches have peeled off and sided with the rebels. Even the old man himself has some misgivings about the ultimate intentions of the UN.

Clan Wallace- Family matriarch Helena Wallace has decisively cast her lot with the rebellion and against the UN. But the war has been hardest on the Wallaces most of all, and their grievous battlefield losses have finally compelled the family to the negotiating table.

Clan Maynard- Jamieson Maynard, once a fire-and-brimstone rebel leader, has been compelled into peace negotiations, having lost all his children but one to the war. That child, his youngest son Elijah, continues to lead his own guerrilla army in the family's name, which has certainly complicated peace talks with the Harmons and their UN allies.

Clan Cooper- Patriarch Raymond Cooper has been imprisoned by UN forces since the early days of the war, but his relatives carried on the struggle regardless. Now Raymond is slowly pushing his feisty but war-weary family towards the peace process.

Clan Stephenson- A vehemently anti-Harmon, anti-UN family based around Langdon, the Stephensons continue to fight on and don't look to be quitting anytime soon.

Clan Avery-Of all the great families of Hollis, the UN's Intelligence and Security Directorate has branded just one as "totally beyond all negotiation or reconciliation." These are the Averys, who are so viciously opposed to the UN occupation that Corbin Avery notoriously killed his own brother Graham when the latter threatened to defect to the Republic. From their rural, mountainous heartland between the cities of Camden and Marianna, the Averys continue to wage an insurgency that they swear will run to the last Avery baby.

Life on Hollis, and in the Clarion Confederation at large, revolves very closely around a complex clan system in which blood ties and feats of martial prowess are supremely important. It is similar in some respects to the ancient clan societies of Scotland and Ireland. Most citizens of the Confederation, and of Hollis, identify ethnically as 'Anglos,' which means that they are white English-speakers from Earth's old Anglosphere countries of Britain, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Of course to a politically unified Earth these distinctions are much less important, but the Anglos departed Earth in 2108 and so of course they consider this to be their defining identity. They are also devoutly Christian, with a large majority belonging to Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal or Mormon sects. A common stereotype is that they are a greedy, deceitful, deeply discriminatory and unduly violent people, while they would probably describe themselves as immensely brave 'citizen-spacers' who are loyal to their friends.

Whatever one's opinion, the war has led to a consensus that they value their way of life very much, and do not appreciate interference. 230,000 United Nations dead have proven that much.

All Anglos belong to relatively large families, which are considered 'septs' or sects, of a larger clan. Most clans are in turn vassals to the Big Four: The Harmons, the Wainwrights, the Mendenhalls, and the Everetts. The formermost and lattermost were mentioned above: the Harmons rule Hollis but have been cast out of the Confederation for their pro-Earth views, while the Everetts are the most powerful single clan and rule the Clarion Confederation as a whole.

An Anglo clan is not just a 'family' in the traditional, blood-related sense of the word, although this is typically true as well. A clan functions as a trade organization, political party, paramilitary, and state all in one, with blood relations most important in regards to who actually runs the clan.

Interests and Fears: -Having been raised by a mechanic father, Joachim is fascinated with various feats of engineering, especially space ships.
-Being relatively inexperienced, he can sometimes succumb to a creeping dread that he is going to let down his men.

Biography: Joachim was born on a wheat farm cooperative not far outside the town of Nouveau Toulouse, Mars. His family belonged to a group of French settlers who had colonized the terraformed Red Planet around Olympus Mons, who referred to themselves as the Marcheurs Rouge. The Rouge, being a rural people, devoted their sons and daughters either to farming or to the military.

As he had never taken much interest in agriculture, as his older siblings did, Joachim began preparing for life in one of the few institutions that could take him off-planet: the United Nations Military. He studied hard, and got grades just adequate enough to gain admittance into Villeneuve-de-Duras Army College. While there, Joachim began the difficult, strange transition from farm boy to soldier, learning everything from squad-level tactics to airborne operations to the grand strategy of legendary conflicts like the Great Droid Uprising or the Jovian Wars.

During his time at the College, Joachim met Teresa Loiseau, whose father was a professor of history there. They initially became good friends, but as the months passed their relationship became something more serious.

Joachim graduated near the middle of his class in 2430, receiving his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and concurrent orders to deploy with the newly minted 319th Mechanized Division in Tau Ceti. Although he anticipated an exciting deployment, Tau Ceti consisted of little more than sitting on base for long stretches with a few pirate or secessionist-hunting missions interspersed. Leave opportunities were spent back on Mars with Teresa.

After a year, Joachim received transfer orders that sent him to the 71st Infantry Regiment, 153rd Infantry Regiment, based on Luna. It meant new commanders, a new platoon. However, the 153rd would only be on Luna for three months before the call came down to deploy to Hollis, the UN’s bloodiest front. All soldiers were given three weeks of leave. Joachim rushed back to Mars to say goodbye to Teresa and his family, before preparing to enter a warzone.

On April 27th, the division passed through the Gates of Hermes and entered the strange Hesperia Galaxy that lay beyond. After a brief stop-over on the port planet of Providence, the 153rd touched down on Hollis and deployed to Camp Darmawan in Cordelia Province, taking over from the 91st Infantry. Since peace negotiations are in progress and the fighting is in a lull compared to past years, Joachim just hopes to get his platoon out intact and go home to Mars and Teresa.

Name: Raül Campanal
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Rank: Corporal
Appearance: https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/b/hunting ... 942543.jpg
Ethnicity: Caucasian, llanxador (Catalan settlers of New Florida)
Origin: New Florida, Gliese System
Specialization: Rifleman
Personality: Raül is a very hands-on person. He likes to be busy, he likes to work, and he likes to keep his mind of things. He is gregarious and seemingly unbothered by their current situation, always eager to strike some kind of conversation. He has trouble separating fun and games from work, however, and some might get the idea that he doesn’t take their work very seriously. He does work, however, which generally makes the point about seriousness moot. He likes the attitude of the lieutenant, but thinks he might be a bit too serious at times.
Equipment:
[list]
[*] MTCA
[*] IMS-8 'Orator' Shotgun
[*] Gleeson 10mm Semi-Auto
[*] 2x Smoke grenades
[*] 1x Muzzle-mounted emergency flare
[*] Whistle
[*] Machete https://cdn.insteading.com/wp-content/u ... eath-0.jpg
[*] Necklace of teeth
Interests and Fears:
Interests: Nature, animal life, agriculture, marksmanship, hunting.
Fears: Nature, the Unseen Enemy, being led into an ambush by some big-city hot shot who thinks he knows all there is to know about terrain.
Biography: The planet of New Florida was first settled by Catalan settlers seeking independence from Spain. The Spanish Republic was not willing to depart from their claims of sovereignty over Cataluña, and the UN did little to protect the Catalonians. So, instead of staying with the status quo, many simply packed their things and left, especially the poorer strata of society. A deal struck between a palm oil company and the government of Cataluña meant that these Catalonians could settle on one of their planets in exchange for their services. The company had procured the rights of the swamp planet on the cheap, and was willing to make quite a profit off it by using cheap labour.

Thus, the swamp planet was settled in pockets, with small villages sprouting up in relative close proximity to one another. The early stages of colonisation were mostly dependent on outside help, both from the UN and from the Company, but after clearing the first fields palm oil production began in earnest. This meant the people of New Florida could actually start producing stuff, and the company began to make money. More and more Catalonians flocked to the planet, leading to more and more villages popping up. Still, these were all frontier towns, very closely connected with the nature surrounding them.

It was after three years that the first colonists started vanishing. Of course, colonists had vanished before, walking drunkenly into the forest never to be seen again. This was worse, however. Whole hunting parties would go into the swamplands, never to return. Afraid, the colonists armed themselves, forming civil militias to protect their homes. These men and women would scour the countryside, patrolling the waters until they found what they were looking for. After a few more of these parties disappeared, the first catch was made. Biologists called it Parairritator Floridianis, although the colonists quickly took to calling it the Maw. Apparently, the humans coming to the planet had begun displacing the former top of the food chain with their agricultural work, and it wasn’t happy with that status quo. As such, various specimens of the species had begun protecting their habitat. This Spinosaur-like waterborne hunter would have no trouble flipping boats, and was quicker than one would expect of a creature its size, being just larger than a large cow. It was a stealth hunter, having no problem sneaking up though the water or over land to ambush its prey. Prey than now included humans. The civil militias, now knowing what to hunt for, began perfecting methods to hunt the creatures, and a hundred year long war for dominance over the planet began.

A war Raül was born into. The boy was born in Ciudad Puigdemont, a very small frontier town at the outskirts of an area of palm oil cultivation. His life was threefold: partially, he was a kid going to school two days of the week. Three days of the week were spent helping his parents on the farm, as all other kids did as well. The other two days were for relaxing, which he spent hunting with his mother. The life of a child on New Florida was hard and fraught with danger, but also accentuated by a close community of people who would do everything to keep one another safe. Growing up hunting, Raül naturally became a part of the Guardia Civil, hunting the Maws with vigour. He lost his mother that way, and his father never quite got over it. He would live, but fall into such a depressed state as to be rendered unfit for labour. Working on the palm oil plantations didn’t earn Raül enough money, so when the army drafters came for young, strong lads with an eye for firearms, Raül was happy to sign up. That experience with firearms was apparently enough to land him as a corporal.

Origin: Centuaris (Alpha Centauri Spaceport Alpha, or ACSA)
Specialization: Machine Gunner

Interests and Fears:
-Being born and raised on a Space Station, Ymir is fascinated with Planetary Topography and has a love for Cartography.
-He is highly superstitious, and is not only susceptible to trickery that way but fears some actions may cause him spiritual punishment.
Biography: Ymir Rollosson was born on the Alpha Centauri Spaceport-City of Centauris in 2405 to two Scandinavian Cultural Preservationists.

After the unification of Earth, sects of people from all national and ethnic groups set out to preserve the historical culture and uniqueness of they're respective regions. While the majority of these groups were more moderates simply wishing to preserve their history, others became more nationalistic, fully embracing some ancient traditions and modernizing their old culture. The Scandinavian Movement was referred too as Sögulegir Forráðamenn, or The Historical Guardians. A far more radical sect of The Guardians began slowly reviving Old Norse traditions as the Earths population became mkre tolerant, eventually creating a Neo-Pagan movement and establishing colonial strongholds.

Ymir was raised in such a family, brought up to respect and fear the reimagined versions of the Norse Pantheon, reading the ancient Sagas, and hoping to oneday enter Valhalla.

Growing up on the Station, Ymir always longed to travel the cosmos and explore like his forefathers. Doing decent in his studies, he always trained with close friends of his, frequently boxing in matches in the lower levels of the station to raise money for him to leave after coming of age.

Instead of pursuing higher education, Ymir used his savings to get passage to the Sol System. Once on Earth he lived in Europe, where he met a UN Recruiter at their base in Stockholm. From here Ymir would enlist, graduation Higher-Mid teir of his class in 2430, where he was assigned to the 95th Heavy Artillery Company. He stayed with the company for only a year before being reassigned to the 153rd, only 3 weeks before they were scheduled to pass through the Gates.

Going through the Gate, Ymir likened it to traveling the Bifrost, feeling like a great warrior entering a new land. He is now ready to fight for the safety of the RoH, and to bring himself honor.

My only request would be to change the firearms to something from the standard-issue list. Everything else looks great. Also heads-up: his picture doesn't load.

App for an MG Gunner is on the way, but I do have a question: have advanced is the MTCA anyway? Does it have access to GPS? A Compass? Clock? What kind of info does the HUD show normally? etc.

Biography: Frederik comes from a lonely little mining operation close to Earth. His family managed to avoid a lot of the killing that had gone on since the conflicts had begun, instead mining away their days in one of the many small mines that dotted Carroway's Rest. But being the child of miners was boring, with the only school over fifty miles away and parents too busy for homeschooling he and his friends managed to go from ruffians to actual criminals, with thefts becoming endemic across the company town. It would take some time for the gang to be caught, with only one police officer and a whole slew of other problems to deal with the gang became a backburner problem. That is, until he couldn't ignore them any longer. One of Evans' friends killed a woman during a home invasion, the towns first murder and the sole police officer wasn't about to let it go unsolved, it was his luck they were just dumb twenty-somethings who were too panicked to do any cleanup. The crew was brought in and they consequently flipped on each other. Evan's was the youngest and was offered a choice: the military or a whole lot of jail time. He joined up.

17 years old and in the Army, he was put into the infantry and served his mandatory four-year sentence as a rifleman on the Cadius Occupation Zone fighting against UN Secessionists. On the completion of his four-year stint, he was offered the chance to muster out, but Evan's had finally found a place to belong, going home to Carroway's Rest was no longer an option, the Army was a family and a home. He reenlisted and was given the option to change his specialty, and Evans chose to go through Specialty School again and become a medic, which is the position he's been in for six years.

Valentin has also managed to earn the respect of his men in the past by leading by example, working right alongside those he commands when he can, and always brightening the mood with jokes and snarky comments.

- Gleeson 10mm Semi Auto

- x3 Smoke Grenades
- Flashlight
- x5 Pairs of BDU's
- Mess Kit
- One Weeks Rations
- Duck Tape
- Scissors
- Phillips Head
- Waterproof pen and paper
- Weapon Maintenance Kit
- Baby wipes
- x2 Porno Mags (And he is always willing to share.)
- x2 Pairs of extra socks
- x1 roll of toilet paper (in case he loses his baby wipes)
- Foot powder
- A pressed rose, given to Valentin by Hamna when they first started seeing each other, kept in a little plastic bag and slipped inside his paper pad, tucked safely into his chest pocket where he can always access it for its good luck. Because at heart, Valentin is a very sentimental man.

Interests and Fears: INTERESTS: Valentin has an interest in writing and literature, and on the rare times that he isnt babbling loudly about any subject under the sun, he can be found reading a book. Any book will do really, he has even been caught reading brochures and pamphlets just for the process of it.

Valentin's second love is music, and though the only instrument he has with him during deployment is his guitar, he also plays the drums bass, mandolin and banjo. His voice is only OK, but he has enough heart to make up for it.

FEARS: Valentin deeply fears needles, bugs and heights, though he can handle flying alright.

His greatest fear however, though he has thankfully managed to avoid it so far, is that a soldier will die due to a command that he gave.
Biography:Valentin Popov was born in the small town of Killjoy on Kepler 452b. However, despite the negative name, his opinion of the town growing up was that it was a wonderful place, and in fact had the opposite effect rather than killing his vibe.
Valentin’s father died from cancer when he was young, and he was raised predominantly by his mother, who worked as a school teacher. From the moment he learned how to read, she taught him to read non stop, forcing him to love literature weather he wanted to or not. Though he hated it when he was little, preferring to cause trouble around town with his friends than stay inside and read, his mother still always made him choose one book to read every summer vacation. When he reached middle school however, this attitude started to change. Though he was clearly bright, and was told so on many occasions by his teachers, Valentin still began to struggle in school, with his hyperactive goofball personality clashing with the suddenly more structured school setting. As well as this, he was still more of a kid at heart than some of his other classmates, and suddenly Valentin found himself alone and with only a few friends.
With little else going for him at the time, Valentin began to escape to other worlds through reading. Whenever he had a bad day, (which was frequently, especially as puberty started to come along and it seemed like every boy but him could talk to girls,) Valentin always had books to keep him sane. He developed a love for classic American literature, where he found the rugged yet still honorable hero’s, american dream, and mixture of folk tales, puritan fears and struggles between man and nature spoke to him considering that he lived in a small town on a frontier world.
In either grade however, his loneliness began to end as he began hanging out with a new kid in town named Kyle. Kyle had been from Earth, and had grown up in what had once been the United States. With his love of american literature, Valentin couldn't help but be interested in getting to know the real deal, and soon his constant badgering of Kyle for facts about American morphed into them being friends. As they got to know one another, both began to share music that they liked, and eventually Kyle suggested that they start a band.
“I don't play any instruments though,” said Valentin.
“Thats OK,” said Kyle, “I know a bunch, I can teach you. And besides, we can just start a punk rock band. You don't need to be good to start a punk rock band.”
And so they did, Valentin and Kyle, along with another boy from their school named Patel, (his first name was Peter. He never told anyone because he thought it was lame,) started a punk rock band called Twisted Carrier, and they were truly awful. But, Jimmy had discovered his second love, and though Twisted Carrier did not last through sophomore year in highschool, Valentin branched out and began writing his own songs.

But best of all, his new musical talent, and quest to learn every instrument under the sun, helped him move up the social ladder and get the attention of the girls (and even a few guys) who had spurned him in middle school. Though he was never popular in the grand scheme of things, his friendly and goofy attitude mixed with his heartfelt music made him an intriguing figure to many of the girls. One in particular, a girl named Hamna, caught Valentins eye when he was a Junior. She was a much better student academically than Valentin was, being able to concentrate much better than him. She was popular and made him laugh, and soon after she showed a similar interest in him they started dating. Valentin quickly fell in love with her, experiencing all of the beautiful and painful feelings that first love brings, and proudly told everyone he knew about her.

When he graduated, Valentin and Hamna promised to stay together. He had managed to get into a mediocre college by what felt to him like sheer luck considering his grades, and he quickly found himself on the other side of the planet going to school. Still, him and Hamna talked every day for three and a half months, until one day Hamna called and said that she was leaving Valentin. She told him how she didnt like the long distance, and how she had already met and slept with another guy. Valentin was distraught. In his mind, he had planned to marry Hamna, work to support them, and have children of their own. He had gone to college to prepare himself for that, and without Hamna in his life he didn't know what else there was for him to do.

So he joined the Army.

Valentin quickly found, after his entire life of feeling just slightly out of place, that he fit quite well into the military. He was hardworking and industrious, and his friendly personality made him popular amongst his peers. Over time he rose through the ranks, reaching the rank of Corporal soon after joining. When his initial four years were up, he reenlisted, and after another two months he was promoted to Sergeant and deployed to the NewSpace on his first tour of duty in an active combat zone. Though he was stressed and afraid at first, he quickly fit into his groove, and proved to be as capable an NCO in the field as he was out of it. During his tour he successfully lead his squad through three firefights and more patrols and probing missions than he could count.

When his tour ended, he requested to be sent into the field again, and soon enough his request was granted. However, he was not deployed with the same company as he had been his first deployment. Valentin was instead transferred to B Company, 1st Battalion, 71st Infantry Regiment, 153rd Infantry Division.

Thats weird, the link works for me... Ill get on that. Also, ill chsnge those guns soon

It seems we may already have a machine gunner so you may want to change your character's specialty.

As to your question - the functional if not aesthetic inspiration for the combat armor comes from the UNSC Marines of the Halo universe. So yes, it'll come prepackaged with all the things above you've mentioned, as well as probably a map to display specific locations if those are relevant to an objective. Reading orders and other communiques is certainly well within the armor's capabilities as well. Commissioned officers will also be outfitted with certain command modules to help coordinate troops, but that isn't as relevant to our characters.

There are a lot of possibilities considering the 25th century setting, and to be honest I haven't given too much thought to the sheer functionality of the suit, but considering that we are regular infantry and not any kind of special forces, I think it's safe to assume that aside from the actual body armor itself and the HUD capabilities, it doesn't do too much to enhance the user's athleticism or physical ability.

Two things here. First is that every character in the platoon, indeed the whole regiment, is a first-timer to the Hollis war zone/NewSpace/Hesperia Galaxy. That's something I definitely should have specified in the OP so that's on me.

Second thing is that, while there's nothing wrong with Valentin being a Sergeant, he would need to be a little older. NCOs would have to gain their rank through experience, and it's a bit of a stretch to have a guy go private-to-sergeant by age 22. Being closer to thirty than twenty would make more sense. And of course prior combat experience is perfectly alright; but as I said none of us have been through the Gate before so any previous combat deployments would be in the Milky Way. Plenty of people to smoke there as well: pirates, secessionists, etc. Up to you.

Edited app, now with older Sergeant Valentin and a little extra story.

Of course, he is kitted out with the MTCA rather than the MOPP.

Ethnicity: Caucasian, of Russian decent.
Origin: Born and raised in a little town called Killjoy on Kepler 452b.
Specialization: Rifleman (Grenadier)
Personality: Valentin is a goofy, fun loving and friendly, and has earned a reputation as an NCO who is at the top of his game when it comes to "Hearts and Minds." Valentin has also managed to earn the respect of his men in the past by leading by example, working right alongside those he commands when he can, and always brightening the mood with jokes and snarky comments.
Equipment: - AS-12 Assault Rifle, with 40mm Grenade Launcher attachment and red dot sight.
- Gleeson 10mm Semi Auto
- MTCA ("Blood type O - Positive" written on left side of helmet. "God asked me if I wanted peace, I told him he was a dirty hippie" written on right side of helmet.)
- Bandoleer (x12 40mm Grenades)

He had managed to get into a mediocre college by what felt to him like sheer luck considering his grades, and he quickly found himself on the other side of the planet going to school. Still, him and Hamna talked every day for three and a half months, until one day Hamna called and said that she was leaving Valentin. He was hardworking and industrious, and his friendly personality made him popular among his peers. Over time he rose through the ranks, reaching the rank of Corporal soon after joining. When his initial four years were up, he reenlisted, and soon was given the rank of corporal before being deployed for the first time fighting pirates. He found himself and the other soldiers of his platoon working closely with Marines in pirate clearing operations in outer colonies. Valentin was frightened and unsure of himself at first, but soon found that he was an equally good leader under pressure as he had been in the Core Worlds. During his tour he managed to lead his fire team through three firefights, and countless patrols, snatch and grab missions, and ship/building clearing's.

When his first deployment ended, Valentin returned to the core worlds, and continued to work well. He earned a few commendations here and there, before picking up one more deployment protecting fresh settlements on frontier worlds, continuing to fight pirates mostly, but now in a defensive sense rather than an offensive one. Valentin continued like this for the next few years, going on a tour about once a year, until during a deployment securing a recently assaulted series of Pirate Hamlets, Valentin and his squad were hit with an IED. Though Valentin wasn't hurt, two of the men in his fire team were, and in the ensuing firefight that followed the bomb, Valentin spent much of his time trying to rescue his two injured men. His actions during the fight earned him the rank of Sergeant and a commendation medal, but it still didn't stop one of his men from dying due to his wounds.

When his tour ended, he requested to be sent into the field again, and soon enough his request was granted. However, he was not deployed with the same company as he had been his first deployment. Valentin was instead transferred to B Company, 1st Battalion, 71st Infantry Regiment, 153rd Infantry Division, and sent into NewSpace.

So, accepted peepz, since our characters will most likely know each other already, shall we establish what our characters feel about one another?
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Well, Valentin is a new member of the platoon, even though he is a career soldier, so he actually would be completely new.

The division has spent about two weeks in NewSpace along with a month-long wind-up period on Luna, so even the most recent transfers would have at a minimum three weeks to acclimate. The platoon may be at a point where the men are approaching familiarity with one another but aren't quite there yet. So we've all become more or less acquainted, but we probably don't know one another all that well.

Updated the app to be the team medic, still not done but I'm wondering if is his medic kit ok? I got most of it from a real-world kit list but inflated a few of the numbers a bit. I figured some items, mostly medicine, might be either smaller or more potent requiring less in the future so I could pack a bit more.

Vaguely a pessimist, certainly an absurdist, unironically an antinatalist.
